OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of reagent serology for suspected acute toxoplasmosis in pregnant women and to describe clinical, laboratory and therapeutic profiles of mothers and their children. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted with IgM-anti-Toxoplasma gondii-reagent pregnant women and their children who attended the public health system in the state of Paraná, Southern Brazil, from January 2001 to December 2003. Information were obtained from clinical, laboratory (ELISA IgM/IgG) and ultrasonographic data and from interviews with the mothers. To test the homogeneity of the IgM indices in relation to the treatment used, the Pearson's Chi-square test was applied. Comparisons were considered significant at a 5% level. RESULTS: Two hundred and ninety (1.0%) cases of suspected IgM-reagent infection were documented, with a prevalence of 10.7 IgM-reagent women per 1,000 births. Prenatal care started within the first 12 weeks for 214/290; 146/204 were asymptomatic. Frequent complaints included headaches, visual disturbance and myalgia. Ultrasonography revealed abnormalities in 13 of 204 pregnancies. Chemoprophylaxis was administered to 112/227; a single ELISA test supported most decisions to begin treatment. Pregnant women with IgM indices =2.000 tended to be treated more often. Among exposed children, 44/208 were serologically followed up and all were IgG-reagent, and three IgM-reagent cases showed clinical symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: The existence of pregnant women with laboratorially suspected acute toxoplasmosis who were not properly followed up, and of fetuses that were not adequately monitored, shows that basic aspects of the prenatal care are not being systematically observed. There is need of implementing a surveillance system of pregnant women and their children exposed to T. gondii.

KEK (Chronic Energy Deficiency) is a condition caused by an imbalance in nutritional intake, which lasts (chronic) while the anemia in pregnant women is closely related to the nutritional status of pregnant women because anemia is one sign that the mother suffers from malnutrition. This study aims to determine the relationship between chronic energy deficiency and anemia in pregnant women at the Public healthcanter Mangasa, Makassar City. The type of research used is an analytic survey with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique was purposive sampling with 78 respondents.  The results of the statistical test with the chi-square test are known as the significance value of p (0.005) <α (0.05), meaning that the p value is smaller than the value of α at 95% confidence level with 1 degree of freedom, it can be concluded that the null hypothesis is rejected and this accepted hypothesis means that there is a chronic lack of energy relationship with the incidence of anemia in pregnant women at the Public healthcenter Mangasa, Makassar City. Therefore, health workers are expected to be able to carry out continuous strengthening of KIE (communication, information, and education) in pregnant women with KEK risk and anemia to pay more attention to their health status from all factors in readiness to face pregnancy with a cross-sectoral approach.

Introduction: Neglect with oral health and hygiene will be reflected in the accumulation of biofilm and possible formation of supra and / or subgingival calculus, one of the etiological factors of Piogenic granuloma (PG). Objective: To investigate the prevalence and etiological factors of pyogenic granuloma in pregnant women. Method: The study was carried out on 102 pregnant women attending prenatal care in Family Health Strategies. The oral examination of the gingival tissue of the maxilla and the mandible was performed to evaluate the presence of PG, according to Neville et al classification, gingival bleeding, poorly adapted restorations, supra gingival calculus and residual roots. The chi-square test (χ2) was used to investigate the degree of association between variables. Results: Prevalence of PG was 1.96% (n = 2) in the third semester of pregnancy. No pregnant woman had received information about the condition during prenatal care. Regarding the quality of bucaL hygiene, in 63 pregnant women it was considered unsatisfactory, with plaque visible and supragingival tartar in both arches and satisfactory in 39, with supragingival tartar in the lingual of the antero-inferiors and in the vestibular face of the upper molars associated to plaque visible on all teeth. The chi-square test demonstrated a greater need for scaling and corono-root straightening and removal of residual roots when associated with the pregnancy condition. Conclusions: The prevalence of pyogenic granuloma was 1.9% during the third trimester of gestation. As an etiological factor, the presence of too much dental calculus and visible plaque in both arches was found in 61.7% of the pregnant women.

Abstract Background Eclampsia, considered as serious complication of preeclampsia, remains a life-threatening condition among pregnant women. It accounts for 12% of maternal deaths and 16–31% of perinatal deaths worldwide. Most deaths from eclampsia occurred in resource-limited settings of sub-Saharan Africa. This study was performed to determine the optimum mode of delivery, as well as factors associated with the mode of delivery, in women admitted with eclampsia at Riley Mother and Baby Hospital. Methods This was a hospital-based longitudinal case-series study conducted at the largest and busiest obstetric unit of the tertiary hospital of western Kenya. Maternal and perinatal variables, such as age, parity, medications, initiation of labour, mode of delivery, admission to the intensive care unit, admission to the newborn care unit, organ injuries, and mortality, were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software version 20.0. Quantitative data were described using frequencies and percentages. The significance of the obtained results was judged at the 5% level. The chi-square test was used for categorical variables, and Fisher’s exact test or the Monte Carlo correction was used for correction of the chi-square test when more than 20% of the cells had an expected count of less than 5. Results During the study period, 53 patients diagnosed with eclampsia were treated and followed up to 6 weeks postpartum. There was zero maternal mortality; however, perinatal mortality was reported in 9.4%. Parity was statistically associated with an increased odds of adverse perinatal outcomes (p = 0.004, OR = 9.1, 95% CI = 2.0–40.8) and caesarean delivery (p = 0.020, OR = 4.7, 95% CI = 1.3–17.1). In addition, the induction of labour decreased the risk of adverse outcomes (p = 0.232, OR = 0.3, 95% CI = 0.1–2.0). Conclusion There is no benefit of emergency caesarean section for women with eclampsia. This study showed that induction of labour and vaginal delivery can be successfully achieved in pregnant women with eclampsia. Maternal and perinatal mortality from eclampsia can be prevented through prompt and effective care.
