OBJECTIVE: to identify the presence of stress and depression among final year students of two nursing courses, and the association between these variables. METHOD: an exploratory-descriptive study, undertaken with final-year students from the Bachelor's degree and Licenciate's degree courses at the Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing, of the University of São Paulo. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were applied. RESULTS: of the total of 88 participants in the study, 69.8% have no depression, 18.2% presented dysphoria, 6.8% moderate depression, and 5.7% severe depression, which is a low rate compared to the general population. Medium stress levels were the most frequent (76.9%). There was no significant statistical difference in the stress score between the two groups of students (Student's t-test: p=0.295>0.05). The data showed a relation between the stress and the presence of indicative signs of depression, especially severe depression (Pearson: r-0.755 and p<0.01). Discussion: The majority did not show signs of depression. The depressive states found among the students on the two courses accompanied proportionately those who obtained high stress scores, as recorded by other studies on this issue. CONCLUSION: Students with higher levels of stress are more prone to present depression, deserving educators' attention.

The student’s academic performance is an essential factor indicator. There are several factors that could influence on such performance, so the objective of this work was to analyze the relationship between the academic performance and different factors such as physical activity, alcohol and tobacco consumption in students of the University Center of Biological and Agricultural Sciences (CUCBA) of the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG). To this aim, 200 both genders students were asked to consent to apply an inquiry: The academic performance was classified into three levels: Excellent / Very Good (90-100), Good (80-89) and Regular / Bad (<80). The academic status was determined and grouped into four categories: graduates, not graduates, active and irregular. The results were analyzed by Mean Test, Standard deviation, Student's t-test and Chi-squared test. 41% of the enrolled subjects were women and 59% men. The results showed that smoking students had a lower academic performance (p <0.05) than non-smokers, however, in the present study it was not found a significant relationship between alcohol consumption or physical activity and academic performance. It is intended to contribute with proposals tending to strengthen healthy lifestyles and to improve the educacional indicators of this university community.

Objective Our objective was to compare persistence of neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP) at 1 and 2 years in children of nulliparous versus parous women. Study Design We conducted a retrospective cohort study of children diagnosed with NBPP followed at the University of Michigan, Interdisciplinary Brachial Plexus Program (UM-BPP). Self-reported demographics, delivery history, including birth weight (BW) < versus ≥ 9 lbs, and presence of shoulder dystocia (SD) were recorded. Student's t-test and Chi-square test with odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for comparisons of maternal, neonatal, and peripartum characteristics. Results Of 337 children with NBPP, 43% (146) were of nulliparas and 57% (191) of multiparas. At 1 year, children with persistent NBPP were similar in both groups (87% vs. 88%, aOR 1.357, 95% CI: 0.297–6.208). Persistent NBPP was not significantly different among nulliparous and multiparous women at 2 years (97% vs. 92% respectively, aOR 0.079, 95% CI: 0.006–1.050). Conclusion In one of the largest cohorts of NBPP, maternal parity did not influence the likelihood of NBPP persistence at 1 and 2 years.

To detect the change during coral–dinoflagellate endosymbiosis establishment, we compared transcriptome data derived from free-living and symbiotic Durusdinium, a coral symbiont genus. We detected differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using two statistical methods (edgeR using raw read data and the Student’s t-test using bootstrap resampling read data) and detected 1214 DEGs between the symbiotic and free-living states, which we subjected to gene ontology (GO) analysis. Based on the representative GO terms and 50 DEGs with low false discovery rates, changes in Durusdinium during endosymbiosis were predicted. The expression of genes related to heat-shock proteins and microtubule-related proteins tended to decrease, and those of photosynthesis genes tended to increase. In addition, a phylogenetic analysis of dapdiamide A (antibiotics) synthase, which was upregulated among the 50 DEGs, confirmed that two genera in the Symbiodiniaceae family, Durusdinium and Symbiodinium, retain dapdiamide A synthase. This antibiotic synthase-related gene may contribute to the high stress tolerance documented in Durusdinium species, and its increased expression during endosymbiosis suggests increased antibacterial activity within the symbiotic complex.

<p>The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the depression of university students and to investigate statistically predictive factors of depression types. In Greece, the University is the beginning of a new life for all young people who enter adulthood from adolescence and when it is one of life's greatest goals, it often produces symptoms of stress and depression. Students have difficulty organizing and managing their work, setting goals and identifying priorities, working in groups, stressing public speaking, and experiencing emotional disturbances. So, we administered the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scale to 101 students at the University of Patras in Greece. The BDI measures the cognitive, behavioural, and physical manifestations of one's depression (and severity of depression) over the last week and includes 21 questions, ranging from 0-3, and depending on the overall score, 1) the depression is interpreted as normal 2) as a mild mood disorder, 3) as marginal clinical depression, 4) as moderate depression, 5) as severe depression and 6) as extreme depression. In this study, we separated our dataset into the above six depression categories and applied linear regression to predict the category Depression from the rest of the questionnaire variables. According to the results, we achieved a total prediction of 98% of the dataset that calculates the Regression equation.</p>

This study featured types and components of tolerance in students that majored in social science, natural science, and humanities. The paper focuses on various definitions of this term and its regional specifics. The obtained data underwent a correlation analysis, Student's t-test for independent samples, and a content analysis. The sample consisted of 91 people aged 18–21 (33 % male). The methods of primary data collection included the Index of Tolerance questionnaire developed by G. U. Soldatova, O. A. Kravtsova, O. E. Khukhlaeva, and L. A. Shaigerova; the Questionnaire of Communicative Tolerance by V. V. Boyko; the Homophobia Index Questionnaire by V. V. Hudson and V. A. Rickets; the Types and Components of Tolerance vs. Intolerance by G. L. Bardier; and a sentence competition test. The interpersonal component of tolerance had the highest mean score among other components, regardless of the major. The article highlights the way humanities degree students see tolerance. The results can be used in training programs that adapt students to the multicultural environment of the university.

Objective: To analyze the empathic profile and the empathy scores of freshmen of the nursing course. Design and participants: Descriptive study involving 399 freshmen students of two modalities of nursing courses: Bachelor and Bachelor and Teaching Diploma, in the period from 2012 to 2015. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the Empathy Inventory were applied. Ethical considerations: The research received approval from the Research Ethics Committee of the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing. The students registered their acceptance to participate in the research by signing the Free and Informed Consent Form and anonymity was guaranteed. Findings: The mean age of the participants was 19 years, being 85.5% female. The students were grouped by course modality and all groups presented high empathy scores. A significant difference (p < 0.001) was found, which indicates that students of the Bachelor and Teaching Diploma program presented a higher degree of empathy for the General Score, Domain 2 (Interpersonal Flexibility), and Domain 3 (Altruism) in relation to students in the Bachelor program. Conclusion: Results show that nursing undergraduate freshmen are emphatic, with minimum differences between the two courses. This profile is relevant for the development of future professionals capable to demonstrate a balance between instrumental and expressive competences.

The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of seven factors causing academic stress on students of University of Economics and Business - Vietnam National University: Lack of leisure time, Academic performance, Fear of failure, Academic overload, Finances, Competition between students, Relationships with university faculty. Based on the results of a practical survey of 185 students who are attending any courses at the University of Economics and Business - Vietnam National University, the study assesses the impact of stress factors on students. The thesis focuses on clarifying the concept of "stress" and the stress level of students, while pointing out its negative effects on students. This study includes two cross-sectional questionnaire surveys. The first survey uses a set of 16 questions to assess students’ perceptions and attitudes based on an instrument to measure academic stress - Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents (ESSA). The second survey aims to test internal consistency, the robustness of the previously established 7-factor structure. Henceforth, the model was brought back and used qualitatively, combined with Cronbach’s Alpha measurement test and EFA discovery factor analysis. This study was conducted from October 2019 to December 2019. From these practical analyzes, several proposals were made for the society, the school and the students themselves.

The aims of this study were to 1) investigate gastric myoelectrical activity in patients with gastroparesis, 2) validate the cutaneous electrogastrogram (EGG) in tracking the frequency change of the gastric slow wave, and 3) investigate the effect of electrical stimulation on gastric myoelectrical activity. Gastric myoelectrical activity was recorded in 12 patients with documented gastroparesis using serosal electrodes for > 200 min in each subject. All recordings were made at least 4 days after surgery. Each session consisted of a 30-min recording in the fasting state and a 30-min recording after a test meal. The test meal (liquid or mixed) was selected according to patient's tolerance. Electrical stimulation was performed in three subjects via the serosal electrodes at a frequency of 3 cycles/min. Gastric myoelectrical activity was recorded using serosal electrodes in each session. The serosal recording showed slow waves of 2.5 to 4.0 cycles/min in all 12 subjects. Absence of spikes was noted in 11 of the 12 subjects. The simultaneous serosal and cutaneous recording of gastric myoelectrical activity showed that the frequency of the EGG was exactly the same as that of the serosal recording. Liquid meals resulted in a significant decrease in slow-wave frequency (Student's t test, P = 0.006), and the EGG accurately reflected this change. Electrical stimulation had no effect on the frequency of the gastric slow wave and did not induce spikes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Objectives To determine the effect of changing dialysate volume on urea and glucoseequilibration curves and to determine, if dialysate volume is prescribed on the basis of body surface area, whether equilibration curves will be consistent in patients of different sizes and ages. Design A prospective study wherein children with acute or chronic renal failure had peritoneal equilibration studies done with dwell volumes of 30 mL/kg, 40 mL/kg, and 1200 mL/m2. Patient Population Twenty-two children: 7 under 3 years of age; 8 between 3 and 10 years of age; 7 older than 10 years of age. Statistics Student's t-test. Results Urea and glucose equilibrated rapidly at dwell volumes of 30 mL/kg, slower at dwell volumes of 40 mL/kg, and slowest at dwell volumes of 1200 mL/m2. Equilibration curves were similar in children of different ages when dialysate volumes of 1200 mL/m2 were infused. Conclusion Dialysate volumes of 1200 mL/m2 should be used when equilibration studies are being done to compare individuals of different ages and sizes.

The authors developed a 1H qNMR test procedure for identification and quantification of impurity A present in gabapentin active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and gabapentin products. The validation studies helped to determine the limit of quantitation and assess linearity, accuracy, repeatability, intermediate precision, specificity, and robustness of the procedure. Spike-and-recovery assays were used to calculate standard deviations, coefficients of variation, confidence intervals, bias, Fisher’s F test, and Student’s t-test for assay results. The obtained statistical values satisfy the acceptance criteria for the validation parameters. The authors compared the results of impurity A quantification in gabapentin APIs and capsules by using the 1H qNMR and HPLC test methods.
