The present paper analyses the women characters Urvashi, Sreelakhmi, Brinda and Najma in the novel Eating Wasps. The protagonist is the ghost of Sreelakshmi and she takes the readers through the lives of other women in the novel. Anita Nair portrays the confined lives of women even in the modern society. She portrays a society that considers women’s desires as a sin. Gender roles are deeply engrained in the minds of both men and women in a patriarchal society. The family and society consider women’s desires as unnatural. They are silenced and are forced to live a life they despise. The paper discusses the shame and guilt faced by the women in the novel and the gender discrepancies in the society.

ABSTRACTUniversidad de Las Américas (UDLA) -Quito, initiated the "Gender roles in the family environment of the El Topo Commune" project, which aims to promote equitable relationships between men and women, and prevent gender-based violence. In addition, the project seeks to expose and act on inequities and social problems of violence. The study focused on evidencing the learning and changes generated in the students as a result of training, sensitization, and interaction with the El Topo indigenous community.  In this context gender, intersectionality, and community outreach and interculturality are combined in the challenge of promoting meaningful learning (action research).RESUMENLa Universidad de las Américas (UDLA)–Quito, inició el proyecto “Roles de género en el entorno familiar de la Comuna El Topo”, cuyo objetivo es promover relaciones equitativas entre hombres y mujeres, y prevenir violencia de género.  Además, se pretende visibilizar y actuar frente a inequidades y problemáticas sociales de violencia. El estudio se enfocó en evidenciar los aprendizajes y cambios generados en las y los estudiantes a partir de la capacitación, sensibilización e interacción con la comunidad indígena El Topo. En este contexto se conjugan género, interseccionalidad, y vinculación comunitaria e interculturalidad bajo el reto de promover aprendizajes significativos (investigación-acción).

Men and women are the two best creation of nature. She has provided both equal rights but it is man who is too clever and has full control over woman. From a very long time he has limited her freedom and rights. That is why, they have been victims of inequality and exploitation for a very long time. The society which is of traditional mindset believes that a woman should live in boundary wall, give birth to children and to look after them. Most of the religions of the world emphasize that women should be subordinate to and dependent on men. In childhood they should be in take care of father, in youth by her husband and in old age by her sons. The Hindu philosophy, the religious books of Hindu as the Vedas, the Bhagavad-Gita, the Muslims the Christians and others also have same views about the position of women in the society. All of them impose on women strict rules of discipline and prohibit them from the rights equal to men. The women’s position in the family has been that of a servile creature, a playing thing an object of lust and pleasures. The unfair gender roles under patriarchal system are constructed to preserve gender inequality between men and women. Gender role practices extend gradually to maintain the male hegemony to make women powerless because female traditional gender roles (femininities) create dependency to men. Men are assigned to masculinities equipped with power, whereas women are ascribed to femininities to set boundaries that limit their movement. Yet, the increase of female awareness of gender equality has changed this situation. Gender roles are gradually shifting from traditional to modern as the opportunities to receive education and job open widely to develop women's roles that enable them to give financial contribution to the family. This study was purposed to analyze the shift in gender roles in 'The Joy Luck Club' and 'The Kite Runner'. This study used qualitative design in which Chinese traditional gender roles were described using Confucian perspective, whereas Afghan traditional gender roles were exposed in Islamic perspective. Moreover, Karl Marx's conflict theory was used to analyze the shift in gender roles in both novels. The results of study found that the construction of traditional gender roles in both China and Afghanistan was influenced mostly by patriarchy which perceives men as more superior than women. However, the dynamic changes of gender roles, especially femininities, supported by the increase of female education and occupation provide women with more power to achieve development. Further studies are encouraged to analyze other gender roles which have not discussed in this study.

ABSTRACT             Being males and females is biologically constructed since human beings were born. Meanwhile, there is also strict distinction done by society to divide people into men and women or usually called as doing gender stereotype. It effects on different assumptions that are attached to them. As the result, people are categorized based on their own gender roles in society. Java, as the symbol of patriarchal society, is the ethnic which agrees with this social phenomenon. Its beliefs symbolize how men and women have different social status. It also results in different gender roles. SITI is the film which deals with this phenomenon. It shows that being “obedient” Javanese women will give effect on social status towards different genders. The theories of sex and gender and also patriarchal society were used to get the reliable data. Keywords: SITI, Sex and Gender, Inequality, Javanese’s beliefs ABSTRAK                 Menjadi pria dan wanita secara biologis dibangun sejak manusia dilahirkan. Sementara itu, ada juga perbedaan mendalam yang masyarakat lakukan untuk membagi manusia menjadi pria dan wanita atau biasa disebut sebagai stereotip di gender. Hal ini berpengaruh pada perbedaan asumsi yang melekat padanya. Sebagai akibat, manusia dikategorikan berdasarkan peran gender mereka sendiri di masyarakat. Jawa, sebagai simbol masyarakat patriarkal, adalah etnis yang setuju dengan fenomena sosial ini. Kepercayaan yang ada pada masyarakat Jawa melambangkan bagaimana pria dan wanita memiliki status sosial yang berbeda. Hal ini juga menghasilkan peran gender yang berbeda. SITI adalah film yang merepresentasikan fenomena ini. Film ini menunjukkan bahwa sebagai perempuan Jawa yang “taat” akan memberikan efek pada status sosial dari gender yang berbeda. In the 21st century, we try to understand how the roles of men and women have been changed in Vietnam that has firm beliefs of Confucianism in the society. Confucianism in Vietnam instills the concept of male superiority over women. Although the laws in the country establish women’s rights, the norms and practices of society still engender male domination. Vietnam family norms promote the unity of the family while placing women in a subservient position, the traditional culture requires obedience to a father and then to a husband and sons. As per family norms, the power of family decisions also remains with husbands. Men keep contact politically and socially at village meetings and exchange the use of resources and production. With the increase of women taking greater productive roles and earn income, their involvement in decision-making also increases. Due to increased women’s education, female power within the family has also increased. Over that last three decades (Starting in 1986, Vietnam carried out the renovation of the country), these traditional views on gender roles influenced by Confucianism have changed drastically, although it is still looked down upon for women to work outside the house, it is slowly being accepted and almost 71.1% of the female population in Vietnam is actively participating the workforce (General Statistics Office of Vietnam, 2019). On the other hand, the male domination over the woman on the family has eased out, and many men do help out with household chores and looking after children while the woman works. Although this population is much lesser than the expectations, it is still a change from the Confucianism principles where the male remains dominant and authoritative. Although there are instances to prove that Vietnam is coming out of its traditional views on gender roles, it is still far behind concerning gender equality compared to globally desirable standards. It is expected that modernization will bring about the empowerment of women and a balance between men and women in both family and society.

The article presents the data of the Phd research of teenagers family identity. Hypothesis of teenagers’ sex and age specifics of family identity is verified with a help of authorial questionnaire and described. The sample includes 337 12–17 years old teenagers, living in Ramenskoye, Moscow region. Highly verified results were received about the groups of young (12–14 years old) and older (15–17 years old) teenagers. It was established that in the young teen years teenagers feel more acceptance from their families, value it more and are ready to take part in the families’ deals. These results help to understand teenager’s family identity dynamics. There were not verified distinguishes between boys and girls in such parameters as acceptance from the family, it’s value and readiness to take part in the families’ deals, researching with a help of authorial questionnaire. According to the data research authors believe that the boys’ and girls’ results can be correlated with the smoothing of gender roles in modern society, including family roles. Also it can me related to the specifics of authorial questionnaire, that is researching not a family idea but another subjective reality concerning to the family, that has its specifics connected to the age of teenagers, but not to his sex.

Men and women are the two driving wheels of society; both depend on each other. In the ancient, medieval and pre-modern periods the societies remained patriarchal in nature. Modern and post-modern society has brought sea changes in the perception of men towards women. Now women hold a better position, respect and dignity. Women have proved, through various examples that they can work rubbing shoulders with men in all walks of life. This progression has created the demand for equal educational opportunities to men and women. As women carry a dual role of homemakers as well as professionals, they are placed in a more important position to be the center of gravity of the family. Due to this remarkable significance, education of girls has become more important. Reaching out to each and every girl child is central to the efforts of universalizing elementary education. SarvaShikshaAbhiyan (SSA) or ‘Education for All’ (EFA) Programme recognizes that ensuring girl’s education requires changes, not only in the education system of the state, but also in societal attitudes. The Present paper discusses the status and prospects of girls’ education in the four districts of Uttar Pradesh (India) in the light of schemes launched under SarvaShikshaAbhiyan (SSA), implemented in the entire country in 2001.

Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang kekerasan simbolik yang dialami oleh para tokoh perempuan dalam novel berjudul A Thousand Splendid Suns karya Khaled Hosseini. Bentuk-bentuk kekerasan simbolik diidentifikasi dan dianalisis oleh perspektif sosiologis Pierre Bourdieu. Bourdieu mengusulkan bahwa bahasa adalah sarana untuk melestarikan dan mentransformasikan kekuatan simbolik. Pelaku memiliki kewenangan untuk menetapkan nilai, norma, dan standar, mendikte, dan mengontrol paradigma pelaku lainnya sehingga pelanggaran yang diterima sebagai tindakan yang wajar dan sah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kekerasan simbolik teridentifikasi dalam keluarga. Tokoh perempuan bernama Mariam ini mengalami pelecehan verbal dari ibunya terkait status dan konsepsi tradisional tentang posisi perempuan dalam budaya. Sementara itu tokoh utama ini juga dipaksa menikah dini. Selain itu, karakter wanita lain, Laila juga menerima secara pasif segala bentuk kekerasan. Kedua perempuan tersebut diperlakukan secara diskriminatif dalam masyarakat dan keluarga. Kata kunci: kekerasan simbolik, Pierre Bourdieu, agen, arena   This research studies about the symbolic violence experienced by the women characters in the novel entitled A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. The forms of symbolic violences are identified and analyzed by the sociological perspective of Pierre Bourdieu. Bourdieu proposes that language is the means to perpetuate and to transform the symbolic power. The doer has an authority to establish value, norms, and standards, to dictate, and to control the other agents’paradigm making the violences received as the normal and legitimate actions. The result of this research shows that the symbolic violence is identified in the family. The woman character named Mariam experiencing verbal abuse from her mother regarding the status and the traditional conception of woman’s position in the culture. Meanwhile this lead character is also forced to early marriage. In addition, another woman character, Laila is also passively accepted all forms of violences. “…[T]he category “woman” as well as the category “man” are political and economic categories not eternal ones” as commented by Monique Wittig. However, in any patriarchal society these categories are treated to be eternal through repeated naturalisation determining ‘ideal’ gender roles for both the genders. In Kandasamy’s novel When I Hit You the ‘young wife’ started to imbibe and epitomise the role of an ‘ideal wife’ as determined by the patriarchal society. The novel emphasises on the performativity of the pre-assigned gender roles of the protagonist and the authoritative agencies of patriarchy determining her as “evil spirit” when faced with performative resistance. In this dialectics of performance and resistance the writer’s words become the tool of resistance for the marginalised ‘young wife’ of Kandasamy’s novel. Her criticism is not only against the construction of these gendered roles but also against their naturalisation and appropriation. The primary focus of this paper is thus to discuss the politics behind the gendered roles and the agenda of interpellation working behind the project of their naturalisation with a focus on the necessity of subversion of these roles for the protection of the individual self.

Mary Gavell’s The swing is about an aging mother who suffers from ‘empty nest syndrome’. This paper analyzes the novel from the perspective of feminism, argues that the direct causes of her ‘empty nest syndrome’ are her estranged relationship with her husband, son and friends. And the underlying cause of her ‘empty nest syndrome’ is that she is oppressed in the patriarchal society which restricts her to the role of mother and wife. In the patriarchal society, women rely too much on the relationship with their husband and son for their happiness, and thus lose their real ‘self’, and become invisible. In order to cure the ‘empty nest syndrome’, old women should pull themselves out of the sole role of mother and wife in the family, build their own ‘selves’ and set up connections with friends outside the family.
