The essay is dedicated to the problems of teaching drawing and painting at Design faculties of high schools and universities. Understanding of form elicitation patterns or image creation principles contributes to a more precise choice of figurative instruments and allows developing students’ creative abilities as required by the specifics of their professional education. The emphasis is made on the methods of space presentation and its picturesque and figurative organization. When teaching drawing and painting it is necessary to carry out an analysis of decorativeness expressed via a set of figurative tools. Spaces, volumes, planes, colours, lines and a texture are artistic means which are also formal components of a composition. The syllabus for teaching drawing and painting should include a set of educational tasks allowing combining the academic method of spatial image presentation with decorativeness, i.e. a student’s ability to see decorative properties of the nature should facilitate solving their creative tasks of a designer.

AbstractDrawing on the work of Lee Shulman, this article reviews literature exploring the concept of signature pedagogies, which are described as having have surface, deep and implicit structures. These structures are complex and changing; concerned with habits of head, hand and heart. Emerging from professional education and now being explored in STEM and Humanities education, they are characteristic forms of teaching and learning that are common across a sector. Common themes emerge from within a range of disciplines including art, built environment, design, music, religious, social work and teacher education. These include the roles of the curriculum, the teacher, the learning environment, as well as capability, uncertainty and the challenges associated with signature pedagogies. Focusing on literature from design education, the paper explores the nature of signature pedagogy in design and technology, as a tool for professional discourse. The conclusions propose a discursive framework for design and technology education in which the structures are tied together by the three fundamental activities of ideating, realising and critiquing; more commonly thought of as designing, making and evaluating. The deep structure being project-based learning, undergirded by the implicit values and attitudes associated with design thinking; including collaboration, creativity, empathy, iteration and problem solving. Design and technology education has something unique to offer the broad and balanced curriculum through its signature pedagogies and the way that knowledge is experienced by learners.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand how teachers, nurses and engineers view the use of scholarly skills, such as research and critical thinking, in occupational practice and what implications this understanding may have for (especially) teacher education. Design/methodology/approach – Engineers, nurses and teachers who had worked for at least one year after their education was interviewed (telephone interviews). Four interviews from each category were made in this exploratory study. Findings – Few of the interviewees spontaneously connect their research methods training or other elements of scientific thinking in their education to everyday work practice, but all give examples of systematic, reflective and critical elements as features present in the occupational context. Almost all also view the final thesis work done in their respective programmes as a gratifying experience. Further, they describe the freedom and independence they have in their choice of research question and form of work as appealing and encouraging. Research limitations/implications – The study is exploratory and the results should be used to develop ideas about how to improve scholarly/scientific training in profession-oriented higher education programmes. Practical implications – This paper explore ways to understand and further develop the teaching of scholarly/scientific attitudes and ways of thinking in profession-oriented university programmes. Social implications – Scholarly skills such as critical thinking, analytical skills and awareness of different perspectives are important in all professions. How to design education to optimize such skills is important for people and society. Originality/value – The value of the study is that it is a try to use experiences from different fields to improve the generic scholarly aspects of professional education (especially teacher education).

The main task of professional education today is not to master a set of knowledge, but to develop the creative thinking of future qualified workers, their skills and abilities in performing independent search, analysis and evaluation of information. Self-actualization, self-affirmation and realization of creative abilities are also of great importance. Developing creative abilities is a way to motivate students in their learning. We live in the age of the scientific and technological revolution, and our life in all its manifestations becomes more diverse and more difficult at the same time, it does not require outdated or usual actions, on the contrary, it demands the mobility of thinking, rapid orientation, and a creative approach for solving big and small tasks. Nowadays, taking into account the dynamic development of industry and services, the competitiveness of future qualified workers in the service sector depends not only on their acquisition of a high level of knowledge of the technological process and manufacturing tasks, but also on their ability to solve communication and compositional problems. The purpose of the article is to determine the essence and structure of creative abilities of the future qualified workers representing the service sector. On the basis of the theoretical analysis of psychological and pedagogical literature, we offer our own interpretation of the creative abilities demonstrated by the future qualified workers of the services sector; creative abilities are associated with person’s integrated, dynamic qualities and properties which manifest themselves in developing essentially new ideas, in creating something qualitatively new in the services sector. Disclosing the structure of the creative abilities demonstrated by the future qualified workers of the services sector, we defined the following basic concepts for our research like: “services sector”, “a qualified worker”, “interactive technologies”. Having processed the regulatory-legal documents of professional (vocational) education, we have identified the component structure of the creative abilities demonstrated by the future qualified workers of the services sphere by means of interactive technologies: the stimulating-motivating, intellectual-heuristic, personality-targeted and constructive components. Different scientists’ approaches to the defining of the concept “abilities” and “creative abilities”, as well as the essence and structure of the creative abilities demonstrated by the future qualified workers in the services sphere by means of interactive technologies are considered in this article. Keywords: abilities, creative abilities, creativity, sphere of services, a qualified worker.

The prerequisite for the present study is the lack of instruments ensuring timely identification and development of school students’ giftedness in natural science disciplines in the arsenal of a modern teacher. A system of creative tasks integrated into the process of studying chemistry and biology can largely contribute to the development of subject-related knowledge and creative thinking. However, the integration of creative tasks in the educational process should be preceded by purposeful formation and monitoring of the development of a set of reproductive intellectual skills. The main goal of the study is to develop a method for the identification and development of students’ abilities including giftedness in chemistry and biology, as well as to study the opportunities for creating individual learning trajectories in natural science disciplines. The study is based on the hypothesis that the development of an individual trajectory in studying chemistry and biology will contribute to the development of individuality and the creative abilities of students. The main method used in the study is determining the speed of completion of logical operations in the process of solving cognitive tasks. Assessment of the speed of completion of logical operations allows determining, among other things, the ability for mastering natural science disciplines and a child’s giftedness in this educational sphere. A system of tasks and exercises in chemistry and biology providing for the study of the speed of development of reproductive and creative thinking and allowing real-time monitoring of the effectiveness of the educational process for its timely correction is developed for the first time. The results of the study of the speed of completion of logical operations by a student in the process of solving cognitive tasks presented graphically form the basis for the development of an individual program of development of intellectual and creative abilities of a child.
