Coded Aperture Snapshot Spectral Imaging (CASSI) systems capture the 3-dimensional (3D) spatio-spectral information of a scene using a set of 2-dimensional (2D) random coded Focal Plane Array (FPA) measurements. A compressed sensing reconstruction algorithm is then used to recover the underlying spatio-spectral 3D data cube. The quality of the reconstructed spectral images depends exclusively on the CASSI sensing matrix, which is determined by the statistical structure of the coded apertures. The Restricted Isometry Property (RIP) of the CASSI sensing matrix is used to determine the probability of correct image reconstruction and provides guidelines for the minimum number of FPA measurement shots needed for image reconstruction. Further, the RIP can be used to determine the optimal structure of the coded projections in CASSI. This article describes the CASSI optical architecture and develops the RIP for the sensing matrix in this system. Simulations show the higher quality of spectral image reconstructions when the RIP property is satisfied. Simulations also illustrate the higher performance of the optimal structured projections in CASSI.

Innovative techniques provide a teaching strategy to improve education in biomedical sciences for nursing students [1]. With augmented reality (AR) technology, elements in the physical environment can be enriched or supplemented by computer-generated sensory inputs such as text, images, 3-dimensional (3D) graphics, and audio. AR has been paradigmatically applied worldwide to education of different disciplines, making some contributions to teaching and learning [2]. However, AR products on the market mainly focus on primary or secondary education where the pleasurable aspects of AR are promoted [3]. Although acceptance of using AR in healthcare education was reported [4], the actual impacts of AR applications in the training of healthcare professionals have not been well-studied [5]. In view of the potential advantages of integrating AR into nursing education, such as a better visualization of body structures [6], a survey was conducted to specifically assess the effectiveness of AR in improving the quality of biomedical education as perceived by nursing students.

In protein electron crystallography, both low dose electron diffraction patterns and images are needed to provide accurate amplitudes and phases respectively for a 3-dimensional reconstruction. We have demonstrated that the Gatan 1024x1024 model 679 slow-scan CCD camera is useful to record electron diffraction intensities of glucose-embedded crotoxin complex crystal to 3 Å resolution. The quality of the electron diffraction intensities is high on the basis of the measured intensity equivalence ofthe Friedel-related reflections. Moreover, the number of patterns recorded from a single crystal can be as high as 120 under the constraints of radiation damage and electron statistics for the reflections in each pattern.A limitation of the slow-scan CCD camera for recording electron images of protein crystal arises from the relatively large pixel size, i.e. 24 μm (provided by Gatan). The modulation transfer function of our camera with a P43 scintillator has been determined for 400 keV electrons and shows an amplitude fall-off to 0.25 at 1/60 μm−1.
