This paper attempts to address the possibility of real change after a hundred years of exam-based assessments that produce a single mark or grade as feedback on students’ progress and abilities. It uses design thinking and a reframing of the assessment space to foreground an attribute-based approach that retains the diversity of aspects of a student’s performance across subject boundaries. There are a number of rationales and concepts built into this approach that aim to divert staff and student focus from marks, content delivery, and retention, towards the development of knowledge literacies, conceptual frameworks, and a broad range of personal qualities and skills. Web-based software (REVIEW) developed and refined for more than a decade to facilitate this approach retains categorised student progress data through the day-to-day criterion-referenced marking of assignments and exams. Education research cited proposes that institutions should engage students as a partner in their personal and professional development rather than as a customer buying a degree. It is suggested and illustrated in this paper that the use of self-assessment and visual feedback on different categories of progress is part of the key to forming such a partnership.

Abstract Self-assessment is an important tool enabling learners at the level of higher education to control and construct their learning processes. To allow for further study, we modified a web-based self-assessment system to provide individuals with the opportunity to test and retest their own learning and receive feedback. This study included 59 students. Following completion of the test, feedback was structured based on a comparison of the student’s performance to the standard performance, their position in the group and their previous performances. Each test deadline had to be waited for determining the positions in the group of students and the delayed feedback were sent to the learners by e-mail. Through this external feedback, learners were able to intervene in their own learning process, thus achieving better future learning prospects and to observe the effectiveness of these intervention though feedback from the next assessment. We defined this process as the self-intervention perception process due to the active participation of the learner. The determination of the structures that affect the meaning and using of the feedback received by the learners were at the forefront. This study aimed to examine the relation between learners’ metacognitive awareness and their self-intervention perceptions and create a learner profile based on this information. Participants also completed Perceived Self-Intervention Scale and the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory. Learners with high levels of metacognitive skills awareness were found to have high levels of perceived self-intervention. Furthermore, knowledge of cognition had indirect effects on the perception of self-intervention, and that the regulation of cognition was the mediator variable.

Introductions: Self-assessment enables medical students to self-evaluate their knowledge and seek timely assistance for effective learning from their peers and faculties. Self-assessment is an integral part of the student assessment system of School of Medicine, Patan Academy of Health Sciences. Methods: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Structured Integrated Short Answer Questions (SISAQs) links were sent to the personal e-mail of medical students at the start of Principle of Human Biology I Block. These items were created and selected from various disciplines as per their curricular weightage in this block. Students’ scores and feedback were analysed once this 11-week long block was over. Results: The MCQ surveys had ideal difficulty levels and acceptable discrimination indices but they had poor internal consistencies. The criterion-referenced cut-scores of MCQs and SISAQ were higher than the conventionally used 50% pass-mark in Nepal. Students’ suggested to increase the MCQs and SISAQ numbers and match them in terms of their difficulty levels with the end-block and end-year summative assessments. Item analysis helped to identify the items to be retained, revised and discarded for the future use. Conclusions: Web-based self-assessment of knowledge was found to be an extremely useful tool to inculcate self-directed and life-long learning habits among medical students.Journal of Patan Academy of Health Sciences. 2014 Dec;1(2):58-63

The article examines the legal and moral and ethical aspects of a misdemeanor that discredits the honor of an employee of the criminal Executive system. The considered reason for dismissal has the main feature associated with the integration of legal and moral norms, which often raises a lot of questions about the attribution of a particular offense to this basis. Using the analysis of normative legal acts, the authors attempt to identify the signs that contribute to the separation of the studied grounds for dismissal from all their diversity. The classification of offenses that discredit the honor of an employee of the criminal Executive system is presented, which allows to systematize and organize the knowledge obtained about the considered grounds for dismissal. The analysis of a misdemeanor that defames the honor of an employee of the penal system from a moral and ethical position gives an understanding, first of all, that it does not have a clear regulation from the point of view of the law, but the consequences of committing such a misdemeanor are clearly legal. The concepts of “honor” and “dignity” are considered as ethical categories and are analyzed as personal qualities that are manifested in an employee of the penal correction system during the period of service. These categories in the behavior of a person or employee are manifested both externally (assessment from the outside) and internally (self-assessment). The article describes the value orientation of an employee of the criminal Executive system to ethical standards in professional activity, which is an integral part of the moral and ethical side of a misdemeanor that discredits the honor of an employee.

The purpose of the article is to consider the competence capabilities of MFC specialists that require structuring in a professional standard, aimed at increasing satisfaction with the implemented policy of providing public services to the population. The article focuses on the results of a survey of MFC employees, aimed at determining the factors that, according to respondents, form the professional standard of a specialist in a multifunctional center. The authors believe that structuring of a professional standard can act as an innovative mechanism for shaping public opinion in politics. Public opinion, aimed at assessing the quality of interaction with the authorities and the provision of services to the population, can not only reflect the massive satisfaction of the needs of the population, but also take into account the point of view of the current employees of multifunctional centers. Using the self-assessment methodology in the context of an “inside look”, MFC specialists objectively assess their own competence capabilities; identify professional problems, gaps, weaknesses, which should be addressed by additional professional education. In the first part of the article, the authors analyze various mechanisms for shaping public opinion that are often used in modern political science. The second part of the article presents the results of a survey of current MFC employees. Based on the analysis of the survey results, the criteria for the professional standard of an MFC specialist were formed, which include: 1) awareness, that is, understanding the need to implement a professional standard; 2) the range of the most significant competencies of an MFC specialist; 3) a system of individual and personal qualities that form the professional efficiency of employees.

Self-assessment is one of alternative ways to evaluate students’ speaking talent in English. Through this evaluation, students are allowed to discover, know, and develop their speaking skill. Nonetheless, this sort of project was probably not common in Indonesia. Thus, this study was aimed to know students’ perception of using self-assessment for assessing their oral performance at Link and Match vocational high school. The information of this study was gathered by means of questionnaire which consists of 5 questions about the use of self-assessment. In this qualitative study, the data had been analyzed descriptively. There have been 30 vocational high school students who stand in Multimedia Major as the participant of this study. The results of this study indicated that most of the students thought that self-assessment very helpful for them because it allowed them to know their functionality and develop it to achieve the course goal specifically the speaking course objective. However, some students though that self-assessment was considerably useful since the teacher not often use this assignment and the students not take pleasure in whereas attempting to assess themselves. Self-assessment is very useful in exploring and assessing students speaking skill.

The research analyses the contribution of personality to the exercise of the management function within the hospitality industry, and demonstrates that the profiles of incumbents can be measured more objectively by the use of self-assessment instruments. On the basis of pilot studies in Hungary and the Czech Republic a the profiles of final year hospitality students were identified and were compared with current job incumbents. Analysis of the findings indicate a mis-match between student and management traits. The conclusions suggest that educational programmes should be modified if the student experience is to be made more realistic and relevant to the needs o f industry. Implementation of the research should result in improved satisfaction of students' career aspirations and on a wider level, it could contribute significantly to management performance across the industry.

BACKGROUND Australian women from migrant and refugee communities report less sexual and reproductive health (SRH) awareness. They experience reduced access to SRH-specific care as well as culturally-relevant support that could assist them to make evidence-based decisions about their own health and service utilisation. Addressing public health problems through human-centred design (HCD) is an ethical and effective approach to developing solutions with underserved populations that are more likely to experience significant disadvantage or social marginalisation. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the HCD approach that Shifra, a small Australian-based not-for-profit focused on improving access to healthcare for refugees and new migrants, undertook in developing a web-based application to deliver local, evidence-based and culturally relevant SRH information to its users. The evaluation focused on the following three questions: 1. To what extent did Shifra complete all the steps of the design thinking process shown? 2. To what extent did the final Shifra app incorporate the contributions of all co-designers? 3. To what extent were the co-designers satisfied with the process? METHODS The primary data for the first question involved a thorough review of all of Shifra’s organisational documents. Since there is a notable lack of validated tools evaluate HCD projects a maturity rubric was designed to synthesise the findings from the document review. This rubric was developed through consultation and several iterations of feedback from the expert panel were used to improve the usability, completeness and level of detail of the rubric. RESULTS A co-design process was successfully applied to the development of a web-based app for refugee and migrant women in reproductive health. This evaluation also yielded several important recommendations for improving Shifra’s HCD approach moving forward, findings that can be applied to other projects seeking to undertake an authentic community co-design process. First, with so many people of diverse backgrounds contributing to the project, clear communication about roles and expectations is critical. Second, it is important to set realistic expectations and role clarifications with co-designers. Third, it is important not to view all end users as interchangeable. Finally, by setting aside adequate time to develop collaborative relationships amongst all co-design groups the HCD process is an opportunity to give power and control back to the end user population for whom one is designing the health intervention. CONCLUSIONS Improving refugees’ access to SRH is complex and multidimensional and requires innovative and thoughtful problem solving. HCD is one way to address complex problems in an ethical and effective way and it is how Shifra chose to approach the development of its solution to this problem. This evaluation of Shifra’s HCD approach provides a helpful and rigorous guide in reporting that may encourage other organisations undertaking HCD work to evaluate their own implementation.
