Prague Nostitz Library hides among its 14 000 books 60 volumes from the library fragment once belonging to Matthias Stoius Jr (1526–1583), the personal physician of the first Duke of Prussia Albert of Hohenzollern. The most interesting volume from the Stoius’s heritage is a copy of an astronomical calendar Almanach novum by Pietro Pitati used by Stoius as a diary containing his handwritten notes and comments about weather, income, his activity at the Königsberg University and, the most importantly, his medical records concerning the health condition and problems of his noble patient Albert of Hohenzollern. Stoius also took detailed notes about medicaments he delivered to the ill Duke as well as about treatments he applied especially in November 1559 and December 1560 when the physical condition of the duke of Prussia apparently worsened. In 1572, Stoius published in print his report about the last days of Duke Albert and although the handwritten sources on which the report is based are missing they were presumably recorded in the similar diaries.

The aim of the study– to evaluate the quality of life of patients after liver transplantation.Patients and methods. The quality of life of patients after liver transplantation was studied with the help of «SF-36 Health Status Survey» questionnaire and correlation analysis of all scales of the questionnaire with the MELD indices, Child-Pugh before transplantation, SCORE before and after transplantation, body mass index, immunosuppressants, presence of tumor, encephalopathy, hepatitis transplant was performed. The results. In the surveyed group, the average indicators on the scales «physical functioning» were reduced by 31.3%, «role functioning due to physical condition» - by 60.8%, «pain intensity» - by 13.2%, «general health condition» - by 33.4%, «Life activity» by 19.9%, «social functioning» by 19.8%, «emotional role functioning» by 52.9%, «mental health» by 11.7%, «physical component of health» by 24.5% and «psychological component of health» by 15.6%. Between hepatitis grafts and psychological health, as well as between the presence of tumors and pain intensity, the correlation coefficient is greater than 0.25, and the significance levels of both chi-square criteria are less than 0.05.Conclusions. Liver recipients have the lowest quality of life on the role-playing scale due to their physical condition compared to healthy liver recipients. A moderate statistically significant relationship between hepatitis grafts and psychological health, as well as the presence of tumors and pain intensity, has been revealed. There are no gender differences in all components of QL in the group of liver recipients.

Purpose: substantiation of purposefulness of fitness yoga application for strengthening of special health groups’ girl students’ psycho-physical condition and psycho-social health at physical culture training and recreation classes. Material: trainings were practiced twice a week in 2 groups with 20 girl students in every group. Each training session lasted 60 minutes. The following indicators were registered: pressing ups in lying position; torso bending during 30 sec. from lying on back position; rising legs up to 90 degrees angle in hanging position; long jump from the spot; forward torso bending; test for coordination. Health condition was determined by express assessment of physical health. Results: in both groups girl students’ backbone mobility increased (р-0-05). First group’s girl students demonstrated higher results in pressing ups in lying position during 30 sec. (by 7.34+1.2 times) and in long jump from the spot (14.2+0.4 cm). It was noticed that fitness yoga exercises render positive influence on girl students’ psycho-emotional state, general physical self-feeling and physical condition. Conclusions: targeted fitness yoga exercises’ influences on girl-students’ organism are recommended for support and correction of their health.

Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and COPD are chronic conditions, for which patients need lifelong healthcare. The aim of the study is to examine in which healthcare setting patients with T2DM and COPD receive care, and if they are allocated to the correct setting.Method T2DM and COPD patients from five primary care centres were included. Data concerning treatment setting, patient- and clinical characteristics were extracted from electronic medical records. The profile of patients treated in primary care was compared with that of those treated in secondary care. For patients treated in secondary care we evaluated whether treatment allocation was according to guidelines and if back-referral to primary care could take place. Results Of the T2DM and COPD patients 7.6% and 29.6% were treated in secondary care of which 72.7% and 31.4% according to the guideline. T2DM patients treated in primary care were older (63 versus 57 years, p = 0.001), had a shorter diabetes duration (8 versus 11 years, p < 0.001) and lower HbA1c (53.0 versus 63.5 mmmol/l, p < 0.001) than those treated in secondary care. Those with COPD treated in primary care used less inhalation medication (75.2 versus 90.1%, p < 0.001) and had better spirometry results (67.39 versus 57.53 FEV1%pred, p < 0.001).Conclusion The majority of the patients with T2DM and COPD were treated in primary care correctly. Patients treated in primary care on average had a better health condition compared to those in secondary care. The majority of the T2DM patients and the minority of COPD patients were treated correctly in secondary care.

The relationship between the physical activity and the health condition is very complex since the physical activity brings benefits to health whereas the movement is essential for the human body to work properly. The physical activity, the physical condition and the health condition are influenced by the genetic factors, environmental conditions and lifestyle of each individual. Objectives. The trial aimed at pointing out the cardiorespiratory functional status of students correlated to their lifestyle and physical activity level. Material and method. The cardio-respiratory capacity was tested on the students in the 1st year at the Department of Health and Human Development, precisely 30 students. The inclusion criteria were: their age of 18–40, their consent to take part in the trial, their compliance during the trial, their lack of acute conditions or chronic ones. The Ruffier test was used, a test that assesses the functional capacity of the respiratory and cardiovascular apparatus. Results. The interpretation of the Ruffier test and Ruffier-Dickson test enables an overall view about the ability to adapt the body to effort for the students taken into consideration for the trial. Conclusions. The results of the trial show us that the participants have a good physical condition as they do a series of physical exercises on a daily basis according to the study curriculum. These results are similar to the ones in the specialty literature where the pyramid of physical activities plays an important role

MF59®-adjuvanted trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (aIIV3) and high-dose trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (HD-IIV3) elicit an enhanced immune response in older adults compared to standard, quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccines (IIV4). We sought to determine the relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) of aIIV3 versus IIV4 and HD-IIV3 in preventing influenza-related medical encounters in this retrospective cohort study involving adults ≥65 years with ≥1 health condition during the 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 influenza seasons. Data were obtained from primary and specialty care electronic medical records linked with pharmacy and medical claims. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) were derived from an inverse probability of treatment-weighted sample adjusted for age, sex, race, ethnicity, geographic region, vaccination week, and health status. rVE was determined using the formula (% rVE = 1 − ORadjusted) × 100. Analysis sets included 1,755,420 individuals for the 2017–2018 season and 2,055,012 for the 2018–2019 season. Compared to IIV4, aIIV3 was 7.1% (95% confidence interval 3.3–10.8) and 20.4% (16.2–24.4) more effective at preventing influenza-related medical encounters in the 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 seasons, respectively. Comparable effectiveness was observed with HD-IIV3 across both seasons. Our results support improved effectiveness of aIIV3 vs IIV4 in a vulnerable population of older adults at high risk of influenza and its complications.

Abstract Evaluators must understand the complex overall process that makes up an independent medical evaluation (IME), whether the purpose of the evaluation is to assess impairment or other care issues. Part 1 of this article provides an overview of the process, and Part 2 [in this issue] reviews the pre-evaluation process in detail. The IME process comprises three phases: pre-evaluation, evaluation, and postevaluation. Pre-evaluation begins when a client requests an IME and provides the physician with medical records and other information. The following steps occur at the time of an evaluation: 1) patient is greeted; arrival time is noted; 2) identity of the examinee is verified; 3) the evaluation process is explained and written informed consent is obtained; 4) questions or inventories are completed; 5) physician reviews radiographs or diagnostic studies; 6) physician records start time and interviews examinee; 7) physician may dictate the history in the presence of the examinee; 8) physician examines examinee with staff member in attendance, documenting negative, physical, and nonphysiologic findings; 9) physician concludes evaluation, records end time, and provides a satisfaction survey to examinee; 10) examinee returns satisfaction survey before departure. Postevaluation work includes preparing the IME report, which is best done immediately after the evaluation. To perfect the IME process, examiners can assess their current approach to IMEs, identify strengths and weaknesses, and consider what can be done to improve efficiency and quality.
