ABSTRACTBackground : The prevalence of obesity in adolescents is increasing and causes metabolic syndrome at a young age. Metabolic syndrome results from the interaction of environmental, genetic, and dietary factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the diet profile of obese adolescents suffering from metabolic syndrome.Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study of obese adolescents who visited the Pediatric Nutrition and Metabolic Disease in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya. The anthropometry examination (weight, height and waist circumference), blood pressure, and blood tests (HDL cholesterol, triglycerides and blood glucose levels) were measured. The diagnosis of metabolic syndrome was based on the International Diabetes Federation. Food consumption data was obtained through direct interviews using data collection sheets. Analysis of dietary differences in obese adolescents suffering from metabolic syndrome was performed by chi square using SPSS.Results and Discussions: A total of 59 obese adolescents aged 13-16 years were involved in this study. A total of 27 subjects (45.8%) suffered from metabolic syndrome and 32 subjects (54.2%) did not suffer from metabolic syndrome. The level of the consumption of fish, vegetables, and fruit in obese adolescents were still low. There was no significant difference in the diet profile between obese adolescents who suffer from metabolic syndrome or not.Conclusion: Prevention strategies through food consumption patterns are needed in obese adolescents to control metabolic stress processes and prevent metabolic syndrome in the future. Diet knowledge in obese adolescents needs to be given early to prevent further complications. Increasing foods that contain anti-oxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, is one of the strategies to prevent metabolic syndrome in obese adolescents.ABSTRAKLatar Belakang : Prevalensi obesitas pada remaja semakin meningkat dan menyebabkan sindrom metabolik di usia muda. Sindrom metabolik terjadi akibat interaksi faktor lingkungan, genetik, dan diet. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui profil diet pada remaja obesitas yang menderita sindrom metabolik.Metode : Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian potong lintang pada remaja obesitas yang berkunjung di Poli Nutrisi dan Penyakit Metabolik Anak di RSUD Dr. Soetomo, Surabaya. Pada subyek dilakukan pemeriksaan antropometri (berat badan, tinggi badan, dan lingkar pinggang), pemeriksaan tekanan darah, dan pemeriksaan darah (kolesterol HDL, trigliserida, dan kadar glukosa darah). Diagnosis sindrom metabolik ditegakkan berdasarkan International Diabetes Federation. Data konsumsi makanan didapatkan melalui wawancara langsung dengan menggunakan lembar pengumpul data. Analisis perbedaan diet pada remaja obesitas yang menderita sindrom metabolik dilakukan dengan chi square menggunakan SPSS.Hasil dan Pembahasan : Sebanyak 59 remaja obesitas yang berusia 13-16 tahun terlibat dalam penelitian ini. Sebanyak 27 subyek (45,8%) menderita sindrom metabolik dan sebanyak 32 subyek (54,2%) tidak menderita sindrom metabolik. Tingkat konsumsi ikan, sayur, dan buah pada remaja obesitas masih rendah. Tidak ada perbedaan yang bermakna pada profil diet antara remaja obesitas yang menderita sindrom metabolik maupun tidak.Kesimpulan : Strategi pencegahan melalui pola konsumsi makanan diperlukan pada remaja obesitas untuk mengontrol proses stres metabolik sehingga dapat mencegah sindrom metabolik di masa datang. Pengetahuan diet pada remaja obesitas perlu diberikan sejak dini untuk mencegah komplikasi lebih lanjut. Memperbanyak makanan yang mengandung anti-oksidan, seperti buah dan sayur merupakan salah satu strategi mencegah sindrom metabolik pada remaja obesitas.

Shorter sleep duration is a risk factor for obesity and metabolic syndrome. Previous studies conducted on diff erent races showed inconsistent results. The purpose of this study was to analyze the diff erences in sleep duration in obese adolescents who suff er from metabolic syndrome compared with obese adolescents who do not suff er from metabolic syndrome. A cross sectional study was carried out on 59 obese adolescents who visited the Pediatric Nutrition and Metabolic Disease Clinic in Dr. Soetomo General Academic Hospital, Surabaya. Subjects were selected using total sampling techniques who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria in August-November 2018. Anthropometry (weight, height and waist circumference), blood pressure, and blood tests (HDL cholesterol levels, triglycerides, and fasting blood glucose levels) were held to determine obesity according to CDC 2000 and metabolic syndrome according to International Diabetes Federation. The diff erence in sleep duration in obese adolescents suff ering from metabolic syndrome and without metabolic syndrome analyzed using Chi square test. A total of 27 subjects (45.8%) suff ered from metabolic syndrome. Most obese adolescents (57,6%) have suffi cient sleep duration (≥ 8 hours/day). There was no sleep duration diff erences in obese adolescents suff ering and not suff ering from metabolic syndrome (p> 0.05).

Background: Although the prevalence of abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome has been widely studied in the adult population, little is known about it in children and adolescents especially in developing countries. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome among children and adolescents in Yazd Greater Area, Iran; over the period of 2016-2017. Methods: This study was part of a larger national study with a cross-sectional design. Using multistage cluster random sampling method, 1035 children, and adolescents of both sexes aged 6-18 yr were randomly selected from rural and urban districts in Yazd Greater Area, Iran. Components of metabolic syndrome, and anthropometry measured in the standard situation. Results: The prevalence of abdominal obesity in children 6-10 yr old was 13.2% in boys versus 24.7% in girls. The overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome according to International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria in adolescents aged 10-18 yr old was 7.6% (9.4% in boys). The most prevalent metabolic syndrome components were low HDL-cholesterol (56.2%) and abdominal obesity (27.8%). Conclusion: Comparatively, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Yazd is high. Low HDL-cholesterol levels and abdominal obesity were the most common component, and family history of heart disease, BMI, and male gender were the main determinants of metabolic syndrome in adolescents.

Background: Hypercholesterolemia is a condition in which levels of cholesterol in the blood above normal levels (≥ 240 mg/dl). Physical exercises done regularly useful in the regulation of cholesterol, is total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood decreased, while HDL cholesterol increased. Food has an important role in association with the incident hypercholesterolemia.Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of aerobic exercise on blood total cholesterol level of adult women in the city of Semarang.Method: This research was explanatory research with cross sectional study. Subject was women aged 20-49 years gymnastic participants, as a comparison group was a housewife who was not doing gymnastics. Twenty three samples for group2 by matching on nutritional status and age and with the sampling purposive sampling. Adequacy levels of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and also vitamins A and C were obtained through 2x24-hour recall was not a sequence, and processed using NutriSurvey. Results of independent t-test used to determine the effect of cholesterol levels between groups, and chi square test was used to determine association with nutrient adequacy levels of total cholesterol.Results: The results showed no significant difference in mean total cholesterol level between groups of gymnastic participants (201.2 g/dl) with housewife group (208.3 g/dl). Housewife group was belonging to hypercholesterolemia by 52.2%, while in group of exercise participants at 43.5%. Sufficiency level of protein showed a role in the total cholesterol level of adult women.Conclusion: The aerobic gymnastics did not affect total cholesterol. Moderate level of protein adequacy contributes to the total cholesterol level of adult women.

Aim. To study the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components in a 25—45-year-old Novosibirsk population. Subjects and methods. The Novosibirsk Research Institute of Internal and Preventive Medicine conducted a cross-sectional population-based survey in one of the typical districts of Novosibirsk in 2013—2015. The survey covered 346 men and 408 women. The criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (NCEP-ATP III, 2001), the International Diabetes Federation (IDF, 2005), the Joint Interim Statement (JIS, 2009), and the All-Russian Research Society of Cardiologists (ARRSC, 2009) were used to detect MS. According to the ARRSC criteria, MS was recorded if a waist circumference (WC) was >80 cm for women and >94 cm for men in conjunction with 2 of the following criteria: a blood pressure ≥130/85 mm Hg, triglycerides (TG) ≥1.7 mmol/l, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol

Abstract Background Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) and cystatin C are regarded as novel metabolic risk markers. Therefore, we aimed to examine which one of these biomarkers better correlates with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a cohort of postmenopausal women. Methods A total of 129 postmenopausal women (among which 62 women had MetS) were recruited in this cross-sectional study. MetS was diagnosed according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria. Results Cystatin C and RBP4 levels were significantly higher in women with MetS, compared to those without MetS (p=0.011 vs. p<0.001, respectively). A significant difference in the proportion of women with and without MetS across cystatin C and RBP4 quartiles was observed (χ2=5.1, p=0.025, and χ2=11.1, p=0.001, respectively). Logistic regression analysis revealed a borderline significant relationship between cystatin C and MetS (p=0.066), but this significance disappeared after adjustment for age, inflammation level and duration of menopause (p=0.221). On the contrary, a significant relationship between RBP4 and MetS was observed not only without adjustment (p=0.009), but also even after adjustment for age, inflammation level and duration of menopause (p=0.006). Conclusions RBP4 better correlates with MetS than cystatin C in postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Obesity may cause the increase of triglyceride and decrease of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. Triglyceride/HDL ratio is associated with metabolic disorders. Physical activity is one of the important aspects in preventing obesity. Gender is known to have a relationship with these factors, but it has been inconsistent. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between sex and triglycerides, levels of HDL, triglycerides/HDL ratio, and physical activity of obese adolescents in Makassar. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional design involving 93 samples of obese adolescents from three high schools. Measurement of triglyceride and HDL levels was performed by the Prodia laboratory, while physical activity was measured using the International Physical Activity Questioner. Data analysis was performed with Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests. RESULTS: The results showed that there is a relationship between gender and triglyceride levels (p = 0.006) and HDL (p = 0.034), but no relationship between the ratio of TG/HDL (p = 0.109) and physical activity was found (p = 0.339). CONCLUSION: Efforts should be made to reduce the level of risk adolescent obesity on the risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease, including increase physical activity. Physical activity is important to maintain the physical and mental of obese adolescents.

AbstractObjectiveTo examine the relationship between dietary patterns and metabolic syndrome.DesignPopulation-based cross-sectional study. The K-means clustering method was used to identify dietary patterns and logistic regression models were used to compare the adjusted prevalence rates of metabolic syndrome factors, stratifying by obesity status.SettingThe 1992–3 Italian Bollate Eye Study, a population-based survey carried out in the town of Bollate (Milan), Italy.SubjectsA total of 1052 non-diabetic Italian subjects, 527 men and 525 women, aged 42–74 years.ResultsFive dietary clusters were identified: common, animal products, starch, vegetal/fat and vitamin/fibre. After adjusting for potential confounders, the starch group showed the highest prevalence of metabolic syndrome (36 %) followed by the animal products group (30 %); the vitamin/fibre (20 %) and vegetal/fat groups (19 %) showed the lowest prevalence. The starch group had more dyslipidaemia (higher TAG and lower HDL cholesterol levels) and the animal products group had a higher prevalence of impaired fasting glucose. The vitamin/fibre group had the lowest prevalence of abdominal obesity. The beneficial effect of the vegetal/fat and vitamin/fibre dietary patterns seemed stronger among the obese.ConclusionsOur results confirm the deleterious effect of a very-low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet and also of high intakes of animal products. The consumption of a diet high in vegetal fats or rich in fruits and vegetables is associated with a healthier metabolic profile. Reducing obesity is essential to prevent metabolic syndrome, but even among the obese dietary habits are important for preserving healthy lipid and glycaemic profiles.

IntroductionMetabolic syndrome is a significant problem in the schizophrenia patients. Previous research demonstrated that single nucleotide polymorphisms in the serotonin 2C receptor (5HTR2C) genes are associated with metabolic syndrome related to schizophrenia patients taking atypical anti-psychotic drugs. This study aimed to investigate whether the effect of 3 SNPs in 5HTR2C gene on the presence of the metabolic syndrome in Thai schizophrenia patients.MethodWe conducted a cross-sectional study and 154 patients were recruited. The schizophrenia patients were identified from a diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 4th edition, (DSM-IV) and criterion and determined the metabolic syndrome according to the 2005 international diabetes federation (IDF) Asia criteria. Patients were genotyped for the 5HTR2C rs51,8147, rs126,881,02, rs128,367,71 polymorphisms.ResultsThe preliminary analysis from 154 patients showed the metabolic syndrome prevalence was 38.73%, with 46.50% in male and 53.48% in female patients. The results showed that the patients who have heterozygous and homozygous variant on 5HTR2C gene (rs518,147 and rs126,881,02) showed a significant difference in the presence of metabolic syndrome when compare with patients who carry homozygous wild type (P = 0.007), especially in male patients (P = 0.002). The association between 5HTR2C polymorphisms and metabolic syndrome was found in male patients but not found in female patients.ConclusionThese findings suggest that 5HTR2C genotypes are associated with the metabolic syndrome in patients taking atypical anti-psychotics. However, the metabolic syndrome results from the multigenetic effects. BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is composed of a collection of risk factors for heart diseases and diabetes. In recent decades, metabolic syndrome has been identified as one of the important risk factors leading to the development of work-related diseases. OBJECTIVE: Since few studies have been conducted on evaluating the prevalence of MetS among Iranian workers, this cross-sectional study aimed at assessing the prevalence of MetS and the factors affecting it among Iranian steel workers. METHODS: This study was carried out on 510 employees working in a large steel producing company. The data pertaining to blood pressure, triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose, and demographic information were collected and the Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III) criteria were implemented to diagnose MetS. RESULTS: The prevalence of Mets was obtained equal to 13% and a significant positive relationship was observed between age and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. From among MetS elements, low HDL cholesterol and increased waist circumference were recognized as the most and the least frequently involved elements with 39.3% and 6.5% prevalence, respectively. Chi-square test was run and the results showed that the prevalence of MetS and some of its components rose at higher BMI values. It was also indicated that MetS and its components had no significant relationship with shift work. CONCLUSION: The current findings revealed that the prevalence of MetS increased with aging. Low HDL and high triglycerides levels were among the main risk factors for MetS. Therefore, considering these risk factors, it should be attempted to develop relevant strategies at workplace to encourage workers to go for a healthier lifestyle so that they can prevent the incidence of MetS.

The aim of our study was to evaluate whether any association exists between metabolic syndrome (MS) and ACE I/D and AGT M235T gene polymorphisms in Hungarians as an example of European Caucasian population. Study subjects of our cross-sectional study were recruited from the Hungarian General Practitioners’ Morbidity Sentinel Stations Program. The study population ( n = 1762) approximates very well the age and sex distribution of the general Hungarian population. MS was defined according to the latest diagnostic criteria proposed by the International Diabetes Federation. The frequency of DD genotype (31.36% vs. 25.42%, p = 0.006) and the frequency of D allele (0.56 vs. 0.51, p = 0.006) were significantly higher in the metabolic group than in the non-metabolic group. The distribution of the AGT M235T polymorphism was similar in each group investigated. Association was shown in the case of patients in whom central obesity was combined with elevated TG and low HDL cholesterol level ( p = 0.024 and p = 0.022). It suggests that ACE I/D polymorphism is likely to be involved in lipid metabolism.
