Abstract One of the problems encountered in fish farming is the disease attack. The attack of disease that was caused by bacteria is a problem that often occur in aquaculture. Traditional medicine is more readily accepted by communities because is cheap and easily available, have been quite familiar with the community. There were various kind of traditional medicine and has been widely studied chemically content and usefulness. Therefore there were still many plants unknown levels of toxicity, therefore need further study. Bacteria E. tarda spread in some countries such as Europe, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, United States, Singapore, and Malaysia. While in Indonesia E. tarda were found in Java, Sumatra, and Borneo. The aim of the research is to know the capabilities of the inhibition zone of fruit bitter melon power against the bacteria E. tarda in vitro and knowing whether fruit bitter melon effective in inhibiting the growth of the bacteria E. tarda with gold standard comparator antibiotics Tetracycline. The research was conducted on February 2011 in Bacteriology and Microbiology, laboratory in Fish Quarantine Juanda Sidoarjo district of East Java. The method used in this research is descriptive method that was done in vitro by using sensitivity test of diffusion method with the determination of inhibition zone by comparing with antibiotic inhibition zones. The results showed that bitter melon juice has a bacterial growth inhibition against E. tarda, although when was compared with gold standard antibiotic tetracycline shared considered less sensitive. Observations showed clear zone of bitter melon fruit juice shared with a diameter of 13.3mm, was compared with standard antibiotic tetracycline can inhibit with a minimum diameter of 15mm. Sensitivity test of bitter melon fruit juice will be classified as not susceptible to the bacteria therefore is able to inhibit E. tarda..

A total of 100 different E. coli isolates collected from 10 different biological and environmental sources (10 isolates from each source) such as human faces, human urine, cattle, sheep, goat, chicken, duck, pigeon, drain sewage and soil were used for in-vitro drug sensitivity test in the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from January to May 2007. Ten different drugs such as Gentamicin (GM), Azithromycin (AZM), Erythromycin (E), Levofloxacin (LVX), Ciprofloxacin (CIP), Tetracycline (TE), Amoxicillin (A), Ampicillin (AP), Nalidixic acid (NA) and Metronidazole (MET) were used in this study. Sensitivity test was carried out by the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method as per recommendation of National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards and efficacy of a drug was determined by measuring the diameter of the zone of inhibition that results from diffusion of the agent in to the medium surrounding the disc. A high of 80% and 78% E. coli isolates collectively from all the selected sources were sensitive to LVX and CIP respectively, followed by GM (46%), AZM (45%), TE (30%), AP (29%), E (19%), NA (18%) and A (15%). No isolate was sensitive to MET (0%). Incase of resistance, 96% isolates were resistant to MET, followed by A (72%), E (69%), NA (67%), TE (60%), AP (59%), AZM (33%) and GM (32%), CIP (8%) and LVX (5%). A number of isolates showed intermediate reaction to GM (22%), AZM (22%), LVX (15%), NA (15%), CIP (14%), A(13%), AP (12%), E (12%), TE (10%) and MET (4%). This may be an intermediate phase for the conversion of E. coli isolates from sensitive to resistant form. From the research it may be concluded that E. coli infection of different animals and birds and also of human being may be treated effectively with LVX and CIP followed by GM and AZM.   Objective: The inhibitory properties of successive extracts from Dioscorea bulbifera (Dioscoreaceae) tubers have been evaluated for the presence of phytochemical constituents and antimicrobial efficacy against multidrug-resistant (MDR) clinical isolates was evaluated.Methods: The tuber of D. bulbifera was oven dried and extracted successively with n-hexane, chloroform, methanol, ethanol, and water. The antimicrobial potential of successive extracts against MDR isolates was studied by agar well-diffusion method. Qualitative phytochemical analysis was performed.Results: Qualitative phytochemical analysis demonstrated the presence of steroids, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, saponins, and reducing sugars in almost all the extracts tested. Anthraquinones, phlobatanins, and tannins were not reported in any extracts tested. The in vitro antimicrobial activity of various solvents and water extracts of D. bulbifera was further investigated against ten MDR bacteria and three fungi, respectively. Aqueous and chloroform extracts were found to be more potent being capable of exerting significant inhibitory activities against the majority of the isolates such as Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter sp., Salmonella paratyphi, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Candida albicans. The highest inhibitory activity was observed for K. pneumoniae with wide inhibition zone diameters (17 ± 0.15 mm), followed by E. coli 1(13 ± 0.11) mm, and Acinetobacter sp. (11 ± 0.12).Conclusion: Based on the present study, the extracts of D. bulbifera tubers have shown excellent activity against MDR microbial cultures tested. Further study is recommended for clinical evaluation, of the efficacy of crude extract in herbal medicine that can serve as a base for the development of novel potent drugs and phytomedicines.

A study was carried out to screen for phytochemical constituents and assess the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Senna alata and Senna tora leaf extracts. The leaves were first dried at room temperature and 50°C in an oven prior to solvent extraction using ethanol and methanol. The in-vitro qualitative assays showed that both S. alata and S. tora leaf extracts contained bioactive and secondary metabolites components such as tannins, steroids, saponin, terpenoids, glycosides, flavonoids and phenols. The antioxidant activity and capacity test were carried out by conducting free radical of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and Ferric reduction antioxidant plasma (FRAP) assays. Both assays showed S. tora leaf extract has higher antioxidant capacity than S. alata leaf extract. The efficacy of these leaf extracts were tested against skin pathogens through agar well diffusion method. S. alata extract showed an inhibition zone (1.15 – 1.59 mm) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa while S. tora extracts exhibited a strong antimicrobial activity against S. epidermidis (inhibition zone of 12 – 16.94 mm) followed by P. aeruginosa (inhibition zone of 1 – 1.59 mm). Nonetheless, no inhibition zone was observed for S. aureus by both leaf extracts. The phytochemicals and antioxidant constituents as well as inhibitory potential on skin pathogens possessed by S. alata and S. tora leave highlighted their potential utilization in the development of natural drugs or cosmetics to treat skin related diseases or infections.

The use of antimicrobials from plant extracts has not been used optimally to control pathogenic agents in dragon fruit plants. The purpose of this research was to determine the antimicrobial activity of zodia (Evodia suaveolens) leaf extracts on pathogenic agents of dragon fruit plants in vitro. The research method is laboratory research with Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The antimicrobial concentrations of zodia (E. suaveolens) leaf extract used six types including 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100% with four replications. The research sample was the leaf of zodia (E. suaveolens), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Fusarium oxysporum strain Malang. Test the antimicrobial activity of zodia (E. suaveolens) leaf extracts on the growth of P. aeruginosa and F. oxysporum using the disc-diffusion method and wells method. The research instrument was used the observation sheet of the diameter of inhibition zone indicated by the clear zone. The diameter of inhibition zone data were analyzed using the One Way ANOVA test. The results showed that the antimicrobial activity of zodia (E. suaveolens) leaf extract significantly inhibited the growth of P. aeruginosa and F. oxysporum (P <0.05). These results recommend zodia (E. suaveolens) leaf extract as an antimicrobial agent for dragon fruit plant pathogens.

Honey is a highly nutritious food product and consumed by almost all the population in the world. It has a function as an antimicrobial. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a common Gram-positive bacteria in food and Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a Gram-negative bacteria that often appears in environmental sanitation issues that both can cause infectious diseases.  Some infectious diseases can be treated with antimicrobials such as honey. The purpose of this study was to test the antimicrobial effects on honey products distributed in Pasar Minggu area. The antimicrobial effect test was performed in vitro using agar diffusion method by measuring the inhibition zone formed where the bacteria growth was inhibited by the presence of sample. The concentration of samples were 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% (not diluted) and as aquades control. The results showed that honey tested with various dilution concentrations resulted inhibition zone and. The higher concentration of the inhibited zone zone showed antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and E. coli.

The study aims to explore the antibacterial activity of Stichopus vastus against pathogenic MDR bacteria. Analysis of samples of sea cucumbers included extraction, fractionation, and analysis of bacterial sensitivity test Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), the extraction process is carried out by solid-liquid extraction method. Fractionation was done with Open-Column Chromatography (OCC). Sensitivity test of bacteria was done using an agar diffusion method according to the Kirby-Bauer (Ref). The study revealed that from 5 species MDR bacteria, which are Coagulant negative stapylococi (CNS), E. coli, Enterobacter 5, Klebsiella sp. dan Pseudomonas sp. There are two MDR bacteria had the most sensitive responses by the extract of sea cucumber, which were Enterobacter-5 and Klebsiella sp. The two bacteria were tested against five bioactive fractions obtained from OCC. Fraction criteria-2 had the highest antibacterial activity against Enterobacter-5 and Klebsiella sp, with serial concentration of 20 µg ∙ disc–1, 40 µg. disc–1 and 80 µg. disc–1.  Largest inhibition zone were obtained from 80 µg. disc–1 againts the two bacteria were (14.73 ± 0.48) mm and (11.22 ± 0.85) mm respectively.  GC-MS Analysis revealed that fraction criteria-2 had (or consisted of) cyclohexhane, ethanol, butanoic and pentanoic acids. Keywords: antibacterial activity, multi drug resistance (MDR), sea cucumber, Stichopus vastus

Pneumonia is a lung parenchymal infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.It is Gram negative bacteria that have developed antibiotic resistance. Actinomycetes are Gram-positive bacteria that produce secondary metabolites which have the ability as antimicrobial. Objectives: To identified the ability of Actinomycetes isolates to inhibit the growth of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. The samples in this experiment were from Kebun Raya Bogor that had been rejuvenated on Starch Casein Agar (SCA). Methods: Six dilution series 10-1; 10-2; 10-3; 10-4; 10-5; 10-6 Actinomycetes isolates were used to observe the inhibition zone of P.aeruginosa growth on Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) media by diffusion method. Results: The effective incubation time occurred at 24 hours, and then it resulted in the average clear zone diameter of 14.70 mm, 10.57 mm, 8.53 mm, 8.47 mm, 6.97 mm, and 5.30 mm. The results of the One – Way Anova test with p-value = 0.000 (p < 0.005) showed some differences at each concentration to inhibit the growth of P.aeruginosa ATCC 27853 at 24 hours incubation period. Conclusion: The most effective concentration of Actinomycetes isolates that can potentially be antibacterial was the concentration of 10-1 with potential solid inhibitory power.Keywords: Actinomycetes, antibacterial, Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Enterococcus faecalis is a bacteria that commonly found in secondary root canal infections. Enterococcus faecalis is a gram-positive, facultative anaerobic bacteria. Langsat (Lansium parasiticum) is a natural ingredient that contains secondary metabolites and has antibacterial ativity. The aim of this study was to examine the inhibition effect of langsat fruit peel extract (Lansium parasiticum) to the growth of Enterococcus faecalis. This was a laboratory experimental study with post-only control group design. Langsat fruit peel extract with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% concentration was using disc diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton Agar (MHA) and the inhibition zone was measured with a sliding caliper. The data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whithney test. The result of this study was langsat fruit peel extract with 25%, 50%, 75% concentration showed a inhibition zone, while at 100% showed no inhibition zone. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed that there are significant differences (p <0.05) between all groups. The conclusion was langsat fruit peel extract (Lansium parasiticum) have weak inhibition effect of the growth of Enterococcus faecalis bacteria. The inhibition zone of concentrations 25% : 2,20 mm;  50%: 0,94 mm; 75%: 0,36 mm and 100% : 0,00 mm.

The main chemical composition, i.e. the total content of bioactive compounds (phenolics 2209.86 ? 70.32 mg GAE/100g FDR, flavonoids 831.87 ? 12.61 mg R/100g FDR and anthocyanins 144.55 ? 0.39 mg CGE/100g FDR), in freeze-dried raspberry (FDR) was evaluated spectrophotometrically. Vitamin C content was determined by HPLC analysis (88.81 ? 4.38 mg vit C/100g FDR). Antioxidant activities of FDR extract were evaluated spectrophotometrically on stable 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals and by electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) method on hydroxyl radicals (?OH). EC50 values were evaluated. EC50 DPPH? was 0.127 ? 0.013 mg/ml, while EC50 ?OH was 1.366 ? 0.026 mg/ml. Antiproliferative activity of the FDR extract was evaluated in vitro in three human cell lines by colorimetric sulphorhodamine B (SRB) assay. The most pronounced effects were obtained in the breast adenocarcinoma cell line (MCF7). EC50 value was 395.07 ? 96.38 ?g/ml. Antimicrobial activity was determined by disk diffusion method. The FDR extract produced a clear inhibition zone (without visible colonies) only toward Staphylococcus aureus. The minimal inhibitory (MIC) and minimal bactericidal (MBC) concentrations of FDR extract were evaluated. The values MIC were in the range of 4.7 - 100 mg/ml, and of MBC in the range of 6.3 - > 100 mg/ml.

In the dental office, disinfection and sterilization are a matter of utmost importance for both the physician, the medical staff and the patient. Twelve N-(2-bromo-phenyl)-2-hydroxy-benzamide and N-(4-bromo-phenyl)-2-hydroxy-benzamide derivatives were synthesized and tested for antimicrobial activity against 6 bacterial and 2 fungal strains using the Disk diffusion method for susceptibility testing. The obtained results indicated that the N-(2-bromo-phenyl)-2-hydroxy-benzamide derivatives were more active against the tested microbes, inhibition zones of 6-12 mm being obtained, although the most effective compound against S. pyogenes proved to be N-(4-bromo-phenyl)-2-hydroxy-benzamide (14 mm inhibition zone). The tested compounds presented no effect against S. aureus, S. flexneri, S. typhimurium and C. parapsilopsis at the tested concentration.
