Today the term “monograph” requires careful consideration, since the essence of the term itself is being changed over time and it takes into account the changing conditions in scholarly communication. The purpose of article is by means of the terminological analysis to identify the essential attributes of monograph, reflected in its various definitions. The article considers the terminological analysis of the term “monograph” according to a number of attributes: its material structure, intended purpose, presentation of material, coverage, number of authors, target audience, functions of a monograph for an author and a reader. The author used Russian language and English language dictionaries and research results as the main sources. There considered several approaches to understanding the term “monograph” (natural science interpretation of a monograph as a description of individual types and subjects, a monograph as a treatise on a single theme or problem, and a monograph as a separate publication in the form of a book). Main results are: the determination of the the attributes of a monograph reflecting its essence from the point of view of Russian speaking and English speaking practice, as well as the attributes of a scholarly monograph. The distinction among scholarly, industrial-practical and popular science monographs is typical only for Russian speaking practice, while monograph is primarily a treatise (scientific edition) for English sources. A reputational function of a monograph can become the prevailing function for an author, and sometimes it can be the only one purpose to write it. It is concluded that the main attributes of a scholarly monograph can be considered: the intended purpose - a scholarly one; the coverage - one theme or a problem; the number of authors - one or more authors; the target audience - specialists; the function for an author - the reputational one; the function for a reader - the informative one.

Introduction. The present paper aims at revealing and describing the linguistic means of creating the inventor’s image in the English language science popular discourse. The study also describes the use of image creation strategy and solidarity strategy. The relevance of the research is defined, firstly, by unconditional and ever-increasing public interest in scientific knowledge in the era of technological progress. Secondly, regarding the obvious importance of the human factor in the presentation of an invention from the creator’s point of view makes it possible for the mass reader to interpret the science news in various ways and see the modern inventor’s most typical features. Thus, analyzing the specific representation of the invention in popular science media texts the authors offer their own original conception of a modern innovator, which defines the novelty of the study. Special attention is focused on credibility and competitive nature of science popular discourse which are its integrative features.Methodology and sources. The research is based on the English language sciencepopular media texts – Popular Mechanics, Mit News Education, Science Daily, Interesting Engineering, SciTechDaily. For the selection of technically-focused media texts the continuously sampling method was used. The general methodology of studying image creation strategy and solidarity strategy also includes the method of semantic analysis, the method of semantic-stylistic analysis, elements of communicative-pragmatic analysis and the method of contextual analysis.Results and discussion. Image creation strategy and solidarity strategy are implemented in science popular discourse mainly on lexical and syntactic levels and imply the use of stylistic devices. Each of the strategies mentioned above matches a certain type of science popularized texts about inventions and discoveries. The first type is about the selfpresentation of the innovator, and has its own linguistic features. The second type includes the description of an invention from the position of scientific community. The significant result of the study is the conclusion about the diverse nature of the inventor’s media image.Conclusion. The study of the linguistic specific of the inventor’s image allows a deeper understanding of the anthropocentric nature of an invention itself. The last one is inseparable from its creator being the result of scientific activity and professional ambitions, as well as the personal growth condition. The chosen methodology can be applied for further research and to similar studies of the creator and his creation based on texts of different profile.

The article deals with the phenomenon of gaps in legal terminology of the English language from the point of view of its Russian translation. The author analyzes the approaches to understanding lexical gaps. Examples of terminological gaps have been selected from English-English explanatory dictionaries. The selected terminological units have no equivalents in legal terminology of the Russian language. The study reveals the role of the commentary in rendering the meaning of terminological gaps. While considering the factors determining the existence of gaps, the author pays attention to both linguistic and extra-linguistic factors. The research revealed a number of lexical gaps among the terms of international law. English-Russian termninological dictionaries in some cases contain the explanations of notional gaps. The use of transliteration is a signal of notional gap. The conclusion is made about the connection between the perception of gaps and the structures of one’s mother tongue. The social and historical character of the gaps under study has been proved to be well-grounded. The author emphasizes the importance of detailed definitions for adequate rendering of the gaps.

The research article represents the notion and term “information warfare” taking into consideration numerous scientific schools and developed interpretations with their further classification. The authors also give their own definition of the notion. The adjective use relevance (“false”) in the Russian language information context is linguistically justified unlike the English language context reflecting the notions “false” and “fake” as suitable ones for the language and speech usage. The notion “conflict information” is introduced as a communicative unit with a high pragmatic potential in the spheres of information and political communication. The notions “fake” and “deep fake” are compared. The pragmatic communicative potential of fake information is clarified and developed. The notions and terms diversity based on “fake information”, “fake news” is pointed out within the research article. The authors’ classification of information fakes with distinguishing the corresponding categories and their communicative analysis is provided. The notion “alternative fact” is analyzed from the communicative point of view and contrastive approach usage. Different means of fake information identification are distinguished.

The purpose of the present article is to describe the significance of translator's notes from the point of view of localization of English works of fiction for Russian readership, as well as to identify the types of lexical units that become object of adaptation and the degree of their explication. The theoretical and methodological basis of this study is made up of the key provisions of translation studies, the study of linguistic localization and the study of literary discourse. Within the framework of the present research, a comparative analysis of the concepts of adaptation (pragmatic adaptation) and localization has been carried out to substantiate the advisability of using a new term to name culturally determined modifications of the original text. The characteristics of a literary text have been established, which make it possible to classify works of fiction as objects of localization. Content analysis of the English and Russian versions of the novels Cloud Atlas, The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet and The Slade House by the British writer D. Mitchell has been carried out. The original English-language and translated Russian-language versions of the specified literary works are analyzed, in particular, a comparative analysis of the English-language lexical units and phrases, accompanied by translator's notes in the secondary texts, has been conducted. The advantages of notes as a form of localization of literary texts are indicated. They consist in the possibility of a more detailed and quick description of foreign cultural units in comparison with intra-text transformations.

Statement of the problem. At present when expansion of linguistic and cultural contacts between countries and peoples is growing, the problem of studying the phenomenon of transculturalism acquires particular relevance. Cultural interaction, fusion of cultural traditions and overcoming cultural isolation is reflected on the stage of linguistic interaction and translational creativity of emigrant writers who, being cut off from the linguistic processes of the metropolis in a new linguistic environment, use the language of the host country, combining elements of two linguistic systems and cultures. The purpose of this article is to study and single out the features of the Russian cultural substrate in the works by the modern emigrant writer M.D. Schrayer. Review of scientific literature on the problem. Along with a large number of works devoted to the language of translingual writers, works on the analysis of the Russian-language substrate in the texts by modern authors who create their texts in English are quite few and do not completely solve the problem of the functional significance of this phenomenon. The methodology (materials and methods). The article is based on the analysis and generalization of articles devoted to the problem of cultural substrate and translingual literature done by Russian and foreign linguists from the point of view of linguocultural analysis of the text, component analysis of the semantic structure of lexical units and synchronous comparison of linguistic units belonging to different systems. Research results. Based on the analysis of the texts by M. Schrayer functioning of the Russian-language substrate in the English texts was analysed. The methods of semantization of Russian cultural elements and their use in order to fulfill certain aesthetic functions were studied. It was revealed that the Russian cultural substrate is organically included in the description of Russian reality, creates the image of Russia, expands the idea of ​​the people inhabiting this country and their culture. Conclusion. The English-language literary texts by M. Schrayer are a vivid example of intercultural communication. The use of the Russian cultural substrate in English-language texts serves as a kind of information transfer channel at the intercultural level. Russian cultural elements demonstrate how an emigrant writer includes his experience in a literary work, they convey the author’s attitude, reveal the connection of his biography to an eventful series of his works, which ultimately forms and interprets the image of Russia in a foreign language communicative sphere.

Defining of popular science children’s periodic target audience on the Ukrainian and Polish press markets The importance of reading popular science magazines is based on the specific of modern world, where science and technology have found their usage in everyday life, continue their very fast devel­opment and where nature needs protection from the human influence. According to the pedagogues and psychologists the best time to learn all the things connected with nature, science and technology is childhood. In popularization of science it is very important to know the target audience. That is why we analyzed Ukrainian and Polish press markets in the popular science magazines for children area to consider how publishers differ their audience while making material for children. It appears they prefer not to choose one group of recipients, but try to engage everyone. Such kind of strategy has its financial reasons, but from the pedagogical point of view this strategy is harmful for young reader. So we decided to inform about this problem and about the results of markets analysis.

Exemplary for other than English-language psychology journals, the impact of recent Anglicization of five former German-language psychology journals on (1) authorship (nationality, i.e., native language, and number of authors, i.e., single or multiple authorships), (2) formal characteristics of the journal (number of articles per volume and length of articles), and (3) number of citations of the articles in other journal articles, the language of the citing publications, and the impact factors (IF) is analyzed. Scientometric data on these variables are gathered for all articles published in the four years before anglicizing and in the four years after anglicizing the same journal. Results reveal rather quick changes: Citations per year since original articles’ publication increase significantly, and the IF of the journals go up markedly. Frequencies of citing in German-language journals decrease, citing in English-language journals increase significantly after the Anglicization of former German-language psychology journals, and there is a general trend of increasing citations in other languages as well. Side effects of anglicizing former German-language psychology journals include the publication of shorter papers, their availability to a more international authorship, and a slight, but significant increase in multiple authorships.

<p><em>In this study, I have collected and summarized the functional aspects of a literary prize, contest, and rating, which indicate their affiliation with the marketing complex of the publishing house for the first time. For this purpose, I have analyzed and summarized the common concepts of the functioning of literary prizes and contests as advertising tools for publishing activity. Because the previous studies are only focused on the fact of the impact of the prize on the promotion of editions but do not explain it, these aspects have been considered and introduced by me from the book production’s point of view. I investigated that the prizes and the contests in the literary field are effective marketing tools, which meet many publisher’s needs at the same time and can be considered a non-profit form of capital. I have reviewed the works of other authors, who accept that the economic success of the book is rising if the author is a winner of the literary prize or contest. I have found out that the book prize activates the demand for the book, and the literary contest is a tool to track the reader’s reaction to a future publication. In this way, literary prizes and contests can be considered as a way of conducting a marketing dialogue with the target audience. I have focused on the information support of literary national and international prizes and contests by the media, which attracts attention to the book and forms the reader’s interest. The literary prizes and contests are also considered as a way of exploring trends and their changes, familiarization the popular genres among the target audience and fixation the current choice of modern readers. Literary prizes and contests motivate the authors to improve their literary excellence, are the source of new authors and works, and assist in increasing sales of books. The article looks at book production and circulation from the point of view of translators, who, as purchasers and readers of foreign-language books, are an important mediating force in the selection of literature for translation. Taking the German publisher Tauchnitz's series ‘Collection of British Authors’ and its circulation in Finland in the nineteenth and early twentieth century as a case in point, the article argues that the increased availability of English-language books facilitated the acquiring and honing of translators' language skills and gradually diminished the need for indirect translating. Book history and translation studies meet here in an examination of the role of the Collection in Finnish translators' work.
