One of the ecological problems on the Serang Coast is the degradation of mangrove ecosystems. Coastal communities suffer various losses due to damage to mangrove ecosystems. Mangrove degradation is triggered by the people's ignorance in utilizing mangrove ecosystems in a sustainable manner. for this reason, preventive solutions through environmental education are needed to increase the understanding of coastal communities about importance of the mangrove ecosystems through eco-literacy. Eco-literacy is environmental education approach to increase the ecological awareness of the community and create an environmental balance. This study aims to create and develop mangrove eco-literacy storytelling as learning media of environmental education for coastal children at SDN Lontar 2 – Serang. The research method used Research and Development by Borg and Gall (2008). The result of this study was learning media for the mangrove eco-literacy storytelling which has been through feasibility testing and field trials. The feasibility testing resulted 83.34 % with a very good category. Field trials showed that there was a significant effect with the pretest and post-test based on the t-test 0.02 < p = 0.05 which means that users of mangrove eco-literacy storytelling influences to increase of mangrove eco-literacy students. The conclusions show that eco-literacy of mangrove storytelling media is very feasible to use for the learning process and mangrove eco-literacy storytelling is proven to be able to improve the ability of eco-literacy mangroves of students in environmental theme learning at SDN Lontar 2 - Serang.

The period of environmentalism heightened environmental concern and subsequently the emergence of Environmental Education that is anchored on awareness. It is thought that increase in environmental awareness will reverse the misuse of the environment and its resources. Four decades after the international call for Environmental Education, Earth’s degradation is far from abating as it’s pristinity is consistently and irreversibly being eroded by no less than from anthropocentric activities. Humans have seen themselves as the dominant species that is apart and not part of the organisms that constitute the environment. The philosophical value free nature concepts and the theological assumption that human are the ultimate species together with the rise of capitalism and its surrogates consumerism together conspire to diminuate environmental health. To protect the environment therefore, we must refocus EE to change human’s view of the environment and attitude towards the utilization of its resources. Environmental education can become more effective in creating respect for the environment. This paper examined the failure of efforts at addressing environmental issues via environmental education. The paper posits that environmental problems are on the increase due to lack of deliberate responsibility and stewardship, lack of a unique EE curricula and ineffective pedagogy. We suggest therefore that EE can target human perception and attitude and direct then towards biocentric stewardship for the environment. This can be achieved through a deliberate pedagogy of environmental values that promotes sustainable attitude and respect for the environment. Humans must bear the burden of responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of the environment. We must replace the philosophical value free nature concepts that nature is a common commodity and the theological assumption that humans are the ultimate species. We must also rethink our consumerism nature and the endless faith in the efficacy of technology to solve reoccurrence human induced ecological problems. These issues must be embedded in the school curriculum. Pedagogical approach to EE should essentially be the experiential model. The school curriculum must be the carrier and doer of these values that are crucial to the sustainability of the environment. Environmental ethics, environmental code of conduct, environmental nationalism, nature as manifestation of God, ascetic consumerism are recommended as key component of environmental curricula and pedagogy.

A review of the literature reveals that interpreters’ emphasis on individual connection to the resource offers environmental educators key strategies to promote engagement and addresses critiques of environmental education practice as too generalized, behaviorist, manipulative, or negative. Interpreters serve as the nation's front-line environmental educators, with the foremost opportunity to inspire adults to engage in the free-choice learning that may, at best, motivate deeper ecological awareness and personal environmental activism. Pairing interpreters with teachers can extend the same opportunities to students.

Ecotourism, critical environmental education and ecological subject’s formation: convergences and challenges The “environmental issue” has taken the public scene and stimulated several debates regarding the human forms of relating with the so called natural world. The discommodity contemporary view relative to the troubled urban life has driven people to nurture a desire to “return to nature” and, for this reason, the travels to less altered natural environments has been sought and debated. Therefore, ecotourism has been gaining attention due to its proposal of allying visits to nature and education in order to go beyond a mere contemplative appreciation of the environment. Thus, ecotourism has aims at promoting ecological awareness supported by environmental education. However, it is necessary to associate the activity to topics such as consumption and trade of nature that result in the loss and transformation of the experience, turning the experience into mere merchandise and entertainment. Furthermore, environmental education is composed by different grounds of substantiation and, because of that, ecotourism practice can be based on a broad range of educational proposals. The critical environmental education presents itself as a political-pedagogical project that aims at the formation of an aware subject capable to “reads and interprets” the world around him, that is, the environment and the relations and conflicts contained in it. Therefore, as an educational action, it is dedicated to the human formation of an ecological subject, a critical being, that comprehends the world and his responsibilities as well as acts in respect to the planet. So, once established the relations between environmental education and ecotourism, we will assess whether ecotourism, as a conscious practice in “nature”, can contribute with the formation of an ecological being based on a critical environmental education. By this way, it was possible to consider the formation of this ecological subject through ecotourism only as a "possibility". In this paper, we emphasize that the way for this formation must be based on the valorization of non-formal education as a legitimate part of the individual’s formation, seeking to overcome an idealized and superficial vision of nature, both in ecotourism and in environmental education. KEYWORDS: Ecotourism; Critical Environmental Education; Ecological Subject.
