Music is a phenomenon enjoyed by almost all people. Although music fans may believe that music is an important part of their lives, not every music appreciator decides to venture further by making music themselves. The purpose of this research was to investigate potential variables that may be associated with whether one plays a musical instrument. Specifically, I investigated the role of four individual difference variables that have previously been correlated with a number of factors related to music: openness to experience, self–music overlap (SMO), curiosity, and need for cognition (NFC). Results from two cross-sectional investigations ( ns = 369 and 295) revealed that all four variables were positively related to whether one plays a musical instrument. SMO mediated the relation between openness and whether one plays a musical instrument in all studies. Unlike hypothesized, curiosity and NFC did not serve as mediators to the openness–music link. Collectively, this research sheds light on the underexplored question of who plays musical instruments.

The Old Testament prophet David was known in sacred history as the King of Jews, as a prophet, the compiler of the Psalter, but also as a musician. Therefore, he is usually depicted with certain musical instruments in his hands in Eastern Christian art that illustrates sacred history or the biblical narrative. Although the representations of musical instruments in the art of the lands under the Byzantine cultural and spiritual influence have been minutely analysed, the existing art still provides opportunities for further research. Until present day most attention was given to the organographic analysis of the musical instruments (M. Velimirovic, D. Devic, R. Pejovic), while their meaning and the role in the scenes have remained insufficiently addressed. The scene analysed in this paper allows for both types of analysis. What is interesting from the iconographic and organographic point of view is the fact that the musical instruments with which Emperor David is portrayed in the scenes of the Death of the Righteous man are different. On this occasion, we will look at scenes of the Death of the Righteous man in the time span from the thirteenth to the seventeenth centuries in Byzantine art, as well as Serbian, Russian and Romanian ecclesiastical art after 1453 from the aspect of iconography. Special attention will be paid to the justification of the reasons for the appearance of certain instruments in the hands of King David, as well as their meanings.

This study’s data were collected through observation, interviews, and strengthened by a literature review, which was then analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques. The results showed that the creativity of the people of Citengah Village in maintaining and developing the songah traditional art can be seen in the aspects of natural resource management in the area. The community changed songong, which is a means of blowing fire in a furnace (Sundanese: Hawu), into an art tool called songah (songsong Citengah/songong kabungah). As a musical instrument having no tone, people who are members of the community collaborate songsong with other musical instruments to produce a unique musical composition. The development of the s art cannot be separated from the innovation of the community that collaborates songah with other musical instruments. This has a positive impact on the songah art so that it can be side by side and not less competitive with other traditional arts, including arts originating from abroad. Based on the results of existing research, the development of community’s creativity and innovation in maintaining the existence of art needs to be done continuously to anticipate being alienated and the loss of traditional arts.
