Tensile properties of the FFF-processed thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomer

Abstract Fused filament fabrication (FFF) has become one of the most popular, practical, and low-cost additive manufacturing techniques for fabricating geometrically-complex thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomer. However, there are still some uncertainties concerning the relationship between several operating parameters applied in this technique and the mechanical properties of the processed material. In this research, the influences of extruder temperature and raster orientation on the mechanical properties of the FFF-processed TPU elastomer were studied. A series of uniaxial tensile tests was carried out to determine tensile strength, strain, and elastic modulus of TPU elastomer that had been printed with various extruder temperatures, i.e., 190–230 °C, and raster angles, i.e., 0–90°. Thermal and chemical characterizations were also conducted to support the analysis in this research. The results obviously showed the ductile and elastic characteristics of the FFF-processed TPU, with specific tensile strength and strain that could reach up to 39 MPa and 600%, respectively. The failure mechanisms operating on the FFF-processed TPU and the result of stress analysis by using the developed Mohr’s circle are also discussed in this paper. In conclusion, the extrusion temperature of 200 °C and raster angle of 0° could be preferred to be applied in the FFF process to achieve high strength and ductile TPU elastomer.

The composite materials are replacing the traditional materials because oftheir superior properties such as high tensile strength, low thermal expansion, high strength to weight ratio, low cost, lightweight, high specific modulus, renewability and biodegradability which are the most basic & common attractive features of composites that make them useful for industrial applications. The developments of new materials are on the anvil and are growing day by day. The efforts to produce economically attractive composite components have resulted in several innovative manufacturing techniques currently being used in the composites industry. Generally, composites consist of mainly two phases i.e., matrix and fiber. In this study, woven roving mats (E-glass fiber orientation (-45°/45°,0°/90°, - 45°/45°),UD450GSM)were cut in measured dimensions and a mixture of Epoxy Resin (EPOFINE-556, Density-1.15gm/cm3), Hardener (FINE HARDTM 951, Density- 0.94 gm/cm3) and Acetone [(CH3)2CO, M= 38.08 g/mol] was used to manufacture the glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite by hand lay-up method. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, SEM analysis, hardness test, density tests are evaluated.

Shear-clinching has proven to be a suitable technology for joining of high-strength materials. However, the mechanical properties of the upper joining partner are limited due to the high strains, which occur during the process. Therefore, shear-clinching of the high-strength aluminum alloy AA7075 in the T6 temper is not possible. Yet, the mechanical properties of hardenable alloys of the 7000 series can be influenced by a heat treatment. Thus, within the scope of this work, the joinability of the high-strength alloy AA7075 in shear-clinching processes in dependance of its temper is investigated. The as fabricated state F, the artificially aged T6 temper, a paint baked state and the naturally aged T4 temper are compared to the fully solution annealed W temper as well as to a retrogression heat-treated state. For retrogression heat treatment, a laser is used as heat source, heating up the alloy for a short term in order to only partially dissolve precipitations. The resulting mechanical properties are determined with uniaxial tensile tests. Moreover, the influence of the mechanical properties of AA7075 on the shear-clinching process, the joint formation and the resulting joint strength is analyzed.

The impact of water-induced degradation on the mechanical properties of the chosen two PTFE-coated, glass threads woven fabrics is investigated in this paper. The paper begins with a survey of literature concerning the investigation and determination of coated woven fabric properties. The authors carried out the uniaxial tensile tests with an application of flat and curved grips to establish the proper values of the ultimate tensile strength and the longitudinal stiffness of groups of specimens treated with different moisture conditions. Despite the water resistance of the main materials used for fabrics manufacturing, the change of the mechanical properties caused by the influence of water immersion has been noticed. The reduction in the tensile strength resulting under waterlogged is observed in the range from 5% to 16% depending on the type of investigated coated woven fabric and direction of weft or warp.

The effect of thermal soaking on the mechanical properties of a candidate material for advanced heat engine applications namely, hot isostatically pressed (HIPed) silicon nitride (GTEPY6) are reported here. Pure uniaxial tensile tests conducted at room and at elevated temperatures indicated that the tensile strength of this material dropped significantly after 1000°C. The residual tensile strength of PY6 material after thermal soaking at 1200° and 1300°C was also investigated. Test results showed that thermal soaking at 1200° and 1300°C increased the residual tensile strength. The thermal soaking time had a greater effect on the residual tensile strength at 1300°C. Tensile creep tests performed at 1200° and 1300°C showed that the steady state creep rate was influenced by both the temperature and the applied stress. The higher stress exponent in HIPed as compared to a sintered silicon nitride shows higher creep resistance in the case of HIPed materials.

Among the several additive manufacturing techniques, fused filament fabrication (FFF) is a 3D printing technique that is fast, handy, and low cost, used to produce complex-shaped parts easily and quickly. FFF adds material layer by layer, saving energy, costs, raw material costs, and waste. Nevertheless, the mechanical properties of the thermoplastic materials involved are low compared to traditional engineering materials. This paper deals with the manufacturing of composite material laminates obtained by the Markforged continuous filament fabrication (CFF) technique, using an innovative matrix infilled by carbon nanofibre (Onyx), a high-strength thermoplastic material with an excellent surface finish and high resistance to chemical agents. Three macro-categories of samples were manufactured using Onyx and continuous carbon fibre to evaluate the effect of the fibre on mechanical features of the novel composites and their influence on surface finishes. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) analysis and acquisition of roughness profile by a confocal lens were conducted. Tensile and compression tests, thermogravimetric analysis and calorimetric analysis using a DSC (differential scanning calorimeter) were carried out on all specimen types to evaluate the influence of the process parameters and layup configurations on the quality and mechanical behaviour of the 3D-printed samples.

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable polymer material used for the fabrication of objects by fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printing. FFF 3D printing technology has been quickly spreading over the past few years. An FFF-3D-printed object is formed from melted polymer extruded from a nozzle layer-by-layer. The mechanical properties of the object, and the changes in those properties as the object degrades, differ from the properties and changes observed in bulk objects. In this study we evaluated FFF-3D-printed objects by uniaxial tensile tests and four-point flexural tests to characterize the changes of three mechanical properties, namely, the maximum stress, elastic modulus, and breaking energy. Eight types of test pieces printed directly by an FFF 3D printer using two scan patterns and two interior fill percentages (IFPs) were tested by the aforesaid methods. The test pieces were immersed in saline and kept in an incubator at 37 °C for 30, 60, or 90 days before the mechanical testing. The changes in the mechanical properties differed largely between the test piece types. In some of the test pieces, transient increases in strength were observed before the immersion degraded the strength. Several of the test piece types were found to have superior specific strength in the tests. The results obtained in this research will be helpful for the design of PLA structures fabricated by FFF 3D printing.

Graphene-aluminum (Gr/Al) composite laminated by aluminum (Al) and graphene sheets alternately has excellent mechanical properties thanks to the high strength, high Young’s modulus and the two-dimensional atomic structure of graphene. In this study, the uniaxial tensile properties of Gr/Al nano-laminated composite are studied by molecular dynamics (MD) method. It is found that the thickness of Al layer has a significant effect on the tensile strength and Yang’s modulus of the Gr/Al composite. Composite with a smaller thickness of Al layer shows better properties. Graphene not only block propagation of dislocations, but bear most of the loads, resulting in higher Young's modulus, tensile strength and failure strain of the composites than those of pure Al. The simulation of temperature-effect shows that the Gr/Al composite is difficult to arise plastic deformation at low temperature, which lead to a higher strength and modulus of the composite. In addition, the effect of graphene stacking on the properties of composites is investigated. Through tensile tests at the vertical and parallel interfaces, it is found that graphene stacking may lead to a reduced performance of the composite.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of extruder temperatures and raster orientations on the mechanical properties of polylactic-acid (PLA) material processed by using fused filament fabrication (FFF). Design/methodology/approach In this research, the PLA specimens were first printed with nozzle or extruder temperatures of 205°C, 215°C and 225°C and then evaluated in terms of their physical, chemical and mechanical properties. An appropriate extruder temperature was then selected based on this experiment and used for the printing of the other PLA specimens having various raster orientations. A series of tensile tests were carried out again to investigate the influence of raster orientations on the tensile strength, tensile strain and elastic modulus of those FFF-processed PLA materials. In the end, the one-way ANOVA was applied for the statistical analysis and the Mohr’s circle was established to aid in the analysis of the data obtained in this experiment. Findings The result of this study shows that the chemistry, porosity, degree of crystallinity and mechanical properties (tensile strength, strain and elastic modulus) of the PLA material printed with a raster angle of 0° were all insensitive to the increasing extruder temperature from 205°C to 225°C. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties of such printed PLA material were obviously influenced by its raster orientation. In this case, a PLA material with a raster orientation parallel to its loading axis, i.e. those with a raster angle of θ = 0°, was found as the strongest material. Meanwhile, the raster configuration-oriented perpendicular to its loading axis or θ = 90° yielded the weakest PLA material. The results of the tensile tests for the PLA material printed with bidirectional raster orientations, i.e. θ = 0°/90° and 45°/−45° demonstrated their strengths with values falling between those of the materials having unidirectional raster θ = 0° and 90°. Furthermore, the result of the analysis by using a well-known Mohr’s circle confirmed the experimental tensile strengths and the failure mechanisms of the PLA material that had been printed with various raster orientations. Originality/value This study presented consistent results on the chemistry, physical, degree of crystallinity and mechanical properties of the FFF-processed PLA in responding to the increasing extruder temperature from 205°C to 225°C applied during the printing process. Unlike the results of the previous studies, all these properties were also found to be insensitive to the increase of extruder temperature. Also, the result of this research demonstrates the usability of Mohr’s circle in the analysis of stresses working on an FFF-processed PLA material in responding to the changes in raster orientation printed in this material.

Fabrication of aluminum alloy components by traditional high-pressure die casting (HPDC) requires cost- and time-consuming tooling of steel dies, which makes HPDC uneconomic for producing low-volume components or prototypes. In comparison, powder bed-based additive manufacturing, e.g. selective laser melting (SLM), enables rapid prototyping and production of even complex-shaped components directly from computer-aided design models without needing expensive tools. However, SLM prototype components must have almost identical mechanical properties to HPDC serial components in order to emulate their functionality under different load conditions. In this work uniaxial tensile properties of cast alloy AlSi10MnMg (EN AC-43500) in condition T7, i.e. with 120-170 MPa yield stress, 200-240 MPa tensile strength and 9-12 % strain at fracture, shall be attained using selective laser melting of powder alloy AlSi10Mg (EN AC-43000). These properties were achieved by tailored heat treatment. Furthermore, the effect of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) was investigated. The results of the tensile tests confirmed the basic feasibility of substituting HPDC components with SLM components for prototyping. In particular, similar tensile strength and uniform strain were achieved for SLM samples in condition O, i.e. for SLM samples which were only annealed.

Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is one of the most appropriate additive manufacturing techniques for producing large-scale metal components with a high deposition rate and low cost. Recently, the manufacture of nickel-based alloy (IN718) using WAAM technology has received increased attention due to its wide application in industry. However, insufficient information is available on the mechanical properties of WAAM IN718 alloy, for example in high-temperature testing. In this paper, the mechanical properties of IN718 specimens manufactured by the WAAM technique have been investigated by tensile tests and hardness measurements. The specific comparison is also made with the wrought IN718 alloy, while the microstructure was assessed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Fractographic studies were carried out on the specimens to understand the fracture behavior. It was shown that the yield strength and hardness of WAAM IN718 alloy is higher than that of the wrought alloy IN718, while the ultimate tensile strength of the WAAM alloys is difficult to assess at lower temperatures. The microstructure analysis shows the presence of precipitates (laves phase) in WAAM IN718 alloy. Finally, the effect of precipitation on the mechanical properties of the WAAM IN718 alloy was discussed in detail.
