The aim of this study was to determine the serum oxidative status, antioxidant capacity, and oxidative stress index, as well as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and creatinine profiles, of dairy cows fed rumen-protected choline during the transition period. A total of thirty dairy cows allotted to one control and two experimental groups (10 animals per group) were fattened from 3 weeks prior to the expected calving date until 3 weeks postpartum. The control group was fed a basal diet, and treatment groups 1 and 2, were fed a basal diet containing 60 g/head/day and 120 g/head/day or rumen-protected choline, respectively. Serum total antioxidant status (TAS) levels for the control group and treatment groups 1 and 2 at the time of parturition were 0.56±0.029ab, 0.45±0.028b, and 0.59±0.036a, respectively. The differences between the groups were statistically significant (P<0.05). Rumen-protected choline supplementation did not have a significant effect on TAS levels in the third week before parturition and in the first and third weeks of lactation. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) between the groups in terms of total oxidative status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) or creatinine levels. Serum ALT levels were significantly different (P<0.05) between the groups at parturition and in the first week of lactation, but not significant (P>0.05) for the other periods. In addition, the serum AST level was significantly different (P<0.05) between the groups in the first and third weeks of lactation, but not significantly different (P>0.05) for the other periods. After removing the effect of groups, time-dependent changes were significant (P<0.001) for all parameters. The highest values for TAS, TOS and OSI were obtained in the third week before parturition. The values for these parameters decreased during parturition and after the postnatal period. The lowest values for serum ALT and creatinine occurred at parturition. Rumen-protected choline supplementation did not have a significant effect on serum TAS and TOS levels during the transition period. There is a need for further studies of animals with known metabolic profiles, malnourished animals, and those with high milk yields or metabolic disorders.

This study was conducted to observe the effect of different administration method of garlic and neem on growth performances, feed efficiency and serum biochemical parameters for safe broiler production. The experiment was done for a period of 32 days with 384 one-day-old straight run broiler chicks. The broiler chicks were divided into six groups each of 64 birds and replicated to four subgroups each of 16 birds. The dietary groups were; control (basal diet; no additives), antibiotic (basal diet + antibiotic), garlic in feed (basal diet + 0.25% garlic powder), garlic in water (basal diet + garlic extracts), neem in feed (basal diet + 0.25% neem powder) and neem in water (basal diet + neem extracts). Results showed that the body weight and body weight gain increased significantly (P<0.05) in both the garlic and neem groups compared to the control group. Feed intake was not different (P>0.05) among the treatment groups. Garlic in feed and water and neem in feed groups showed better FCR (P<0.05) compared to the other treatment groups. There were no significant (P>0.05) difference in meat yield, bone development and dressing parameters except head and gizzard in different dietary groups. Supplementation of garlic with feed and water significantly (P<0.05) decrease cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL compared to the other groups. However, both the garlic and neem groups showed numerically higher HDL compare to the control group. There were no 0significant (P>0.05) differences in serum glucose and GPT among different treatment groups. GOT was significantly (P<0.05) lower in neem groups than that of garlic and antibiotic groups. Additive groups showed higher profitability than control group. Based on the results of the study, it may be suggested that the garlic and neem could be used both in feed and water as potential feed additives for safe broiler production. Bang. J. Anim. Aim: This study evaluated the effects of metformin in combination with a herbal capsule (glucoblock) on insulin resistance and oxidative stress index in type 2 diabetic rats. Methodology: A total of 35 male Wistar albino rats weighing between 120-220 g were used for this study. The rats were placed on high fat diet, and diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of freshly prepared streptozotocin (STZ) (45 mg/kg body wt). Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) was determined using the glucose oxidase method. Fasting plasma insulin (FPI), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels were quantitatively determined by a rat-specific sandwich-enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Insulin resistance (IR) was determined using the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) method. Oxidative stress index (OSI) was determined by the ratio of TOS to TAS. Phytochemical analysis on the herbal capsule was done using classical methods. Results: The results revealed the presence of alkaloids (100.31μg/mg), flavonoids (131.45μg/mg), cardiac glycosides (55.93μg/mg) and saponins (61.47μg/mg) in the herbal drug glucoblock. The results showed significantly lower FPG levels in the treatment groups when compared to the diabetic control. Group 3 administered metformin had significantly higher FPG levels compared to the negative control. Group 4 administered the herbal drug glucoblock and group 5 administered a combination of metformin and glucoblock, showed no significant differences in FPG levels when compared to the negative control. The diabetic control had significantly higher FPI levels compared to the negative control and treatment groups. The treatment groups showed no significant differences in FPI levels when compared to the negative control. HOMA-IR was significantly higher in the diabetic control compared to the negative control and treatment groups. Also, HOMA-IR values in the treatment groups showed no significant difference compared to the negative control except for group 3 (metformin), that was significantly higher than the negative control. SOD was significantly lower in the diabetic control, compared to the negative control and treatment groups. There were no significant differences in SOD levels in the treatment groups compared to the negative control. TOS levels in the negative control group and treatment groups were significantly lower, compared to the diabetic control. TAS was significantly lower in the diabetic control and treatment groups compared to the negative control. OSI in the diabetic control was significantly higher, compared to the negative control and treatment groups. Also, the treatment groups had significantly higher OSI compared to the negative control. Conclusion: High fat diet and streptozotocin induction produced significant insulin resistance and oxidative stress in the diabetic rats. Glucoblock was more effective in reducing insulin resistance compared to metformin. The combination showed synergistic drug-herb reaction as glucoblock potentiated the actions of metformin. Both showed antioxidant potential but were not effective in lowering oxidative stress to normal levels. There is need to incorporate antioxidant therapy in the treatment protocol for diabetes mellitus.

The present experiment was carried out on thirty two pregnant Karan Fries (KF) cows. In control group, cows were fed basal diet. In T1 each cow was fed rumen protected choline (RPC) (55g/day), in T2 - green tea extract (GTE) (3g/d) and in T3-RPC + GTE (55+3)g/day along with basal diet. The duration of experiment was 30 days before calving to 60 days after parturition. Animals were evaluated on their reproductive performances. Diameter of cervix, uterine horn and service period reduced significantly (p£ 0.01) in the treatment groups compared to control group. Conception rate was highest for T3 (75 %) followed by T2 (62.5%), T1 (62.5%) and C (50%). There were lesser incidences of reproductive disorders in treatment groups. In conclusion, feeding of RPC and GTE in combination improved reproductive performance during transition period in Karan Fries cows.

, , , , and Antibiotics as growth promoters in poultry diets are currently restricted, so other feed additives, such as prebiotics and probiotics, have been suggested as an antibiotics alternative to improve the performance and gut health of poultry. The current experiment was conducted to study the effects of adding Mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) as a potential replacement for an antibiotic on productive performance, nutrient digestibility, some blood parameters, and caecal microbiota of broiler chickens. For conducting the current research experiment, a total of 180 one–day old Ross broiler chicks were randomly divided into one control group fed a basal diet and four dietary treatments with six replicates for each treatment. The treatment groups were fed a basal diet supplemented with different levels of MOS 0.5, 1, and 2 g/Kg diet and Lincomycin 4.4 mg/Kg diet during 35 days of the feeding trial. With exception of the growing period, the group fed a basal diet supplemented with 2 g MOS/Kg feed had considerably higher body weight and weight gain, while having the lowest feed consumption and best feed conversion ratio compared to the other treatment groups, during all experimental periods. Moreover, dietary supplementation of MOS resulted in a significant decrease in the counts of caecal E. coli and Enterococcus, while Lactobacillus and Yeast bacteria counts were significantly higher, compared to non-supplemented groups. Broiler chicks having a 2 g MOS/kg diet recorded lower values of cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), urea, and liver enzymes, including Aspartate transaminase (AST) and Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), while they recorded significantly higher high-density lipoprotein (HDL), compared to the other experimental groups. Group treated with MOS 2 g/Kg feed improved digestibility of crude protein, ether extract, crude fiber, nitrogen-free extract, and organic matter, compared to the control group, Additionally, MOS supplementation also increased the intestinal villi length, width, and crypt depth and decreased intestinal inflammation, compared to the control group. In conclusion, supplementation of MOS at 2 g/kg diet improved growth performance, digestibility, and blood parameters without having adverse effects on the intestine of broiler chickens, comparable to the Lincomycin.

A total of 108 Holstein cows were used to evaluate the effect of drenching propylene glycol (PG) either individually or in combination with glycerol (G) on body condition score (BCS), production, reproductive performance, protection against subclinical ketosis and economic benefit of dairy cows during the transition period. The six groups (n = 18/group) were; Control group, cows received no treatment; PG300, cows were drenched 300 mL PG for 7 days pre-expected day of calving and 21 days post-calving; PG400, cows were drenched 400 mL PG for 7 days pre-and 7 days post-calving; PG500, cows were drenched 500 mL PG for 10 days pre-and 10 days post-calving; GPG150, cows were drenched a mixture of 150 mL G and 150 mL PG for 21 days pre-and 21 days post-calving; GPG250, cows were drenched a mixture of 250 mL G and 250 mL PG for 21 days pre-and 21 days post-calving. BCS at 30 days in milk (DIM) was significantly higher in all treated groups in comparison to the control one and the best values were observed in GPG250, GPG150 and PG500 groups. Lactation length (LL) was significantly (p < 0.001) shorter in GPG250, GPG150 and PG500 groups than control group. There was a significant increment in 305 milk yield (p < 0.001) and average daily milk yield (p < 0.001) in GPG250 and PG500 groups than other groups except for PG300 with the lowest values for control and PG400. Cows in all treatment groups were observed in heat and conceived earlier as well as had shorter open days and calving interval durations (p < 0.001) and low number of services per conception (p = 0.004) compared to control group with better results for PG500 and GPG250 groups. BHB level and percentage of cows suffered from subclinical ketosis at 7 DIM was significantly lower in GPG250, GPG150 and PG500 groups than control group. Cows in treatment groups had a significantly higher glucose level (p = 0.006) compared to control group. Regarding to economics, the control group showed the highest feed costs, insemination costs and total costs per animal. Additionally, control and PG400 groups had the highest cost per kilogram of milk from total and feed costs compared to other cows. PG300, PG500 and GPG250 groups recorded a greater net return and income over feed cost (IOFC). In conclusion, the continuous drenching of propylene glycol either individually or in combination with glycerol regimens for long duration (PG300, PG500, GPG150, GPG250) during the transition period of dairy cows may reduce the incidence of subclinical ketosis and consequently improve milk production, reproduction and economics compared to drenching for short duration (PG400).

Background and Objectives. The aim of this study was to investigate inflammatory indicators and oxidative status in patients with asbestos exposure with and without mesothelioma and to compare results with data from healthy subjects.Methods. Eighty people with exposure to environmental asbestos and without any disease, 46 mesothelioma patients, and a control group of 50 people without exposure to environmental asbestos were enrolled in this prospective study. Serum total oxidant level (TOL), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and oxidative stress index (OSI), CRP, transferrin, ceruloplasmin,α-1 antitrypsin, ferritin, and copper levels were measured.Results. Mesothelioma group exhibited higher TOL, OSI,α1-antitrypsin, ferritin and copper levels as compared to the other groups (P<0.001,P=0.007,P<0.0001,P<0.001, andP<0.001, resp.). Transferrin was lower in the mesothelioma group than in the other two groups (P<0.001). The asbestos group had higher TOL, TAC,α1-antitrypsin, and transferrin levels (P<0.001,P<0.001,P<0.001, andP<0.001, resp.), as well as lower OSI and ferritin levels as compared to the control group (P<0.001andP<0.001).Conclusions. We believe that elevated acute phase reactants and oxidative stress markers (TOL and OSI) in the mesothelioma group can be used as predictive markers for the development of asbestos-related malignancy.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of adding L-carnitine and Protexin(R) probiotic on performance and some blood parameters of ostrich chickens. In this study, a total of 48 one-day old ostrich chicks randomly divided into four treatment groups. Each treatment comprised of 4 replicates and 3 animals in each replicate and reared for 8 week. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design. The dietary treatments were: Treatment 1 (Control): Basal diet without supplementation; Treatment 2: Protexin(R) probiotic with level of 1 kg/t; Treatment 3: L-carnitine 500 mg/kg diet; Treatment 4: Protexin(R) probiotic with level of 500 kg/t + L-carnitine 250 mg/kg diet. The results of this study indicated that diet supplementation with L-carnitine and Protexin(R) probiotic increased ostrich chickens weight and feed intake at 8 weeks of age in comparison to other treatment groups. The other results showed no significant differences in feed conversion ratio (FCR) among different treatments at 8 week of ages and Broilers receiving L-carnitine + Protexin(R) probiotic had lowest FCR compared to the other tratment groups. Furthermore, diet supplementation with L-carnitine and Protexin(R) probiotic increased blood glucose concentration of ostrich chickens at 8 weeks of age in comparison to other treatment groups. Futher result showed that birds received L-carnitine + Protexin(R) probiotic had lowest total cholesterol in compersion to other treatment groups and birds receiving L-carnitine and Protexin(R) probiotic had lower HDL, LDL, and VLDL concentrations in compersion control group. There were no significant effect in calcium and phosphorus concentrations between control and other treatment groups.

AbstractPurslane is a widespread wild vegetable with both medicinal and edible properties. It is highly appreciated for its high nutritional value and is also considered as a high-quality feed resource for livestock and poultry. In this study, Sanhuang broilers were used to investigate the effect of feeding purslane diets on the growth performance in broilers and their gut microbiota. A total of 48 birds with good growth and uniform weight were selected and randomly allocated to four treatment groups A (control), B, C and D. Dietary treatments were fed with basal diet without purslane and diets containing 1%, 2% and 3% purslane. The 16S rDNA was amplified by PCR and sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq platform to analyze the composition and diversity of gut microbiota in the four sets of samples. The results showed that dietary inclusion of 2% and 3% purslane could significantly improve the growth performance and reduce the feed conversion ratio. Microbial diversity analysis indicated that the composition of gut microbiota of Sanhuang broilers mainly included Gallibacterium, Bacteroides and Escherichia-Shigella, etc. As the content of purslane was increased, the abundance of Lactobacillus increased significantly, and Escherichia-Shigella decreased. LEfSe analysis revealed that Bacteroides_caecigallinarum, Lachnospiraceae, Lactobacillales and Firmicutes had significant differences compared with the control group. PICRUSt analysis revealed bacteria mainly enriched in carbohydrate metabolism pathway due to the additon of purslane in the diet. These results suggest that the addition of purslane to feed could increase the abundance of Lactobacillus in intestine, modulate the environment of gut microbiota and promote the metabolism of carbohydrates to improve its growth performance. This study indicates that the effect of purslane on the growth-promoting performance of broilers might depend on its modulation on gut microbiota, so as to provide a certain scientific basis for the application of purslane in the feed industry.

Abstract Purpose: This study aimed to determine the potential clinical use of dynamic thiol disulfide balance in cases with preinvasive lesions of the cervix.Methods: One hundred and sixteen patients with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, one hundred patients with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion and one hundred and ten healthy controls were enrolled in the study. A fully automated colorimetric system was used to determine the levels of thiol-disulfide parameters. The ischemia-modified albumin, total oxidant-antioxidant capacity, oxidative stress index of the retrieved cases were further analysed.Results: Native thiol and total thiol levels are significantly lower in the high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion group according to control group (p:0.004 and p:0.015, respectively). Disulfide level is significantly increased in the high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion group compared to control group (p:0.004). Oxidative stress index levels in high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion group were observed as significantly higher according to the control group (p:0.014). Ischemia-modified albumin levels in the high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion group were observed as significantly higher compared to the control group (p:0.020). Disulfide levels are positively correlated with risk type of Human papillomavirus (r:0.420, p<0.001).Conclusion: The analysis of dynamic thiol disulfide balance revealed considerable oxidative damage in patients with Human papillomavirus -related cervical precursor lesions compared to women with ordinary cytology specimens. Therefore, investigation of thiol disulfide balance with presented method represents a new promising test for early diagnosis and management of women at high risk for cervical cancer.

SummaryTwo experiments were conducted with milking cows on continuously stocked perennial ryegrass pastures. In each a control group, T0, received 1 kg/day of a concentrate supplement and treatment groups T1 and T2 received 4 kg (Expt 1) or 5 kg/day (Expt 2) of a low quality T1 or a high quality T2 concentrate. In Expt 1 treatments were applied continuously for 14 weeks to a total of 30 cows. In Expt 2 a Latin square design for 9 weeks was conducted with 18 cows. The stocking rate of the pasture declined from 9·6 to 5·1 cows per ha (mean 6·7 cows/ha) from May to August (Expt 1) and was maintained at 3 cows/ha in August-October (Expt 2).Supplements increased total intakes by 0·92 and 0·77 kg organic matter (OM)/kg OM supplied in the concentrates respectively for Expts 1 and 2. Milk yields increased by 0·6 and 0·5 kg/kg concentrate supplied and supplemented cows showed small increases in live weight. Differences in lactation milk yield just approached significance. Grazing times were only slightly reduced by supplements and bite sizes were lower than normal. There was no important difference in animal performance between the two concentrates. The total output from the pasture was 19·6t milk and 115 GJ of utilized metabolizable energy per hectare.Reasons for the high supplementary effect of the concentrates and its implications for stocking rates are discussed.
