Nowadays, English is one of the most important languages in Vietnam, so students at all levels in Vietnam have been studying English as a compulsory subject with special attention to speaking skills to communicate and work in the integration world. However, speaking skill is still strongly not successful with students, especially technical students at universities. Therefore, this small-scale research aims to investigate the difficulties which technical students at IUH usually faced when practicing the skill, and the efficiency of experiential activities in improving learners' speaking skills. This research used quasi-experimental method. The sample of the research is 120 technical students in 4 English classes in the second semester of the school year. After distributing a questionnaire to 120 technical students at IUH, the findings indicated that speaking skill is essentially evaluated by most of the students, although they still have some difficulties when practicing. It was also evident that students were interested in experiential activities which were applied to improve students' skills, such as watching films and telling opinions, role play, communicate in group work, and so on. These activities not only enhance students' positive motivation in studying English and speaking skills but also improve their communicative skills.

This paper reports on an attempt to increase students’ exposure to communicative English in a senior high school environment. Despite common awareness of the importance of exposure “to develop students’ communication abilities” (MEXT, 2011, p.1), research shows that activity-based all-English classes are not always conducted. Other research has also revealed that even with classes taught entirely in English, the total hours are not enough for the acquisition of basic skills of English. Therefore, in order to increase exposure to communicative English, I conducted morning and afternoon homeroom periods in English for two years [EHR]. In addition, one student per lesson gave a one-minute speech in English during the morning HR every day. Most of the students reported that EHR was instrumental in developing their comprehension and speaking skills, and at the end of each school year, they chose to continue EHR in the following school year.

Pakistan is one of the developing countries where English is taught from primary to graduation level as a compulsory subject, but it is observed and quoted by a number of researchers in their research that the EFL learners are found weak in one of the basic language learning skill i.e., speaking. Keeping in view this issue of learners this research study was conducted to investigate the types of difficulties the male and female learners of EFL face in acquisition of speaking skills competence and to get their suggestions, which they expect from teachers or authorities to do in their endeavors of improving speaking skill competence in overcoming the difficulties faced by them. The sample consisting of 120 undergraduate students from 10 universities was selected. A questionnaire having 10 close-ended and 05 open-ended items was distributed among the participants. The analysis of quantitative data suggests that comparatively males give more importance to skill for success in career than female, moreover they are more hesitant than females because of lack of confidence, afraid of mistakes and of being criticized, etc. while analysis of qualitative data reveals that only 27% participants are satisfied by their speaking skills competence, 51% were unable to reason what is important for mastering speaking skills, 20% said, they are unable to speak because of lack of confidence, 38% feel speaking skill is the most difficult skill, while 35% favored classroom activities for improving speaking skill competence. On the basis of findings from the suggestions of the participants, it is concluded that if teachers arrange classroom activities, then there will be a positive impact on students’ confidence as activities will improve the speaking skill competence of the learners.

Learning outcome data are obtained through pretest and posttest activities. The samples are 80 students randomly taken by adjusting to the condition and aim of the research. The results show a significant difference between the posttest of the experimental group and that of the control group. FO value is 5.225 and Sig. is 0.025 < 0.05. Thus, it shows that the null hypothesis is rejected, and the research hypothesis is accepted. The use of short story as an essential component of second and foreign language teaching has recently been resurrected. Current studies also indicated that short story can facilitate effective learning of speaking. This study aimed at investigating whether short stories use was effective to develop students’ speaking in English as a foreign language (EFL) context. To achieve the aim, a pretest-posttest experiment design using two groups of experimental (n=30) and control (n=30) was conducted at SMPN 160 Jakarta. The control group was taught speaking using short stories, while the control group was taught speaking in the routine procedure of the English classes. The experiment occurred in six weeks, two forty-five-minutes-sessions per week. Data was collected using tests administering the interview technique. The results of the hypothesis test employing SPSS22.00demonstrated that short story use had a significant effect on the participants' speaking skills improvement. For English language learners, speaking is an essential skill that should be achieved. By practicing continuously, they can become trained and skilled. To support their proficiencies and competencies, they also should master the language subskills: pronunciation, structure, and vocabulary. The teachers, therefore, should facilitate their students by applying appropriate techniques of language learning in the classroom so that their students can speak English quickly. Through this study, the researchers managed an effective teaching technique for speaking class by implementing a modified British Parliamentary Debate to train the students' speaking skills. This study, therefore, projected to find out whether or not the use of the Modified British Parliamentary Debate technique in teaching speaking can increase their speaking skill. This study also aims to determine whether or not the students are interested in learning to speak through the modified British parliamentary debate. The study applied the quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The subjects of the study were students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Enrekang, Indonesia. The population of the research was 64 students. The researchers grouped the students into two groups. There were 32 students in group one and 32 students in group two. The researchers assigned both groups to the same activities in pretest and posttests but different treatments of teaching techniques. The researchers gave a modified British parliamentary debate model for the experimental group and a small group discussion for the control one. The instruments of the research were an oral speaking test and a questionnaire. The results of data analysis exhibited a significant improvement in the students' speaking skills after the treatments. The result of hypothesis testing showed that the t-test value (2.087) was higher than the t-table value (2.000) at the level of significance 0.05 and the degree of freedom 62. Moreover, based on the questionnaire, this study found that the students were interested in learning the speaking skill through modified British Parliamentary debate. In short, implementing the modified British parliamentary debate in teaching speaking can develop the students' speaking skills and encourage the students to learn speaking ability.
