The present study was carried out to determine, for the first time, the chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oils derived from the aerial parts of three aromatic plants Thymus algeriensis Boiss & Reut, Rosmarinus officinalis L., and Salvia officinalis L. growing under semiarid conditions. The essential oils were chemically analyzed and identified by gas chromatography (GC) and GC/ mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and their antimicrobial activity was individually evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa using both agar disk diffusion and agar dilution methods. The major constituents of Thymus algeriensis essential oil were identified as camphor (13.62%), 1,8-cineol (6.00%), borneol (5.74%), viridiflorol (4.00%), and linalool (3.93%). For Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil, 48 compounds were characterized, of which the main constituents were camphor (17.09%), Z-β-ocimene (10.88%), isoborneol (9.68%), α-bisabolol (7.89%), and borneol (5.11%). While, Salvia officinalis essential oil was characterized by β-thujone (16.44%), followed by viridiflorol (10.93%), camphor (8.99%), 1,8-cineol (8.11%), trans-caryophyllene (5.85%), and α-humulene (4.69%) as the major components. Notably, results from antibacterial screening indicated that Thymus algeriensis and Salvia officinalis essential oils exhibited a strong inhibitory effect against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus compared to Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil. Further, less activity was recorded against Pseudomonas aeruginosa for the three tested essential oils.

Background: [1, 3, 4]oxadiazolenone core containing chalcones and nucleosides were synthesized by Claisen-Schmidt condensation of a variety of benzaldehyde derivatives, obtained from oxidation of substituted 5-(3/6 substituted-4-Methylphenyl)-1, 3, 4-oxadiazole-2(3H)-one and various substituted acetophenone. The resultant chalcones were coupled with penta-O-acetylglucopyranose followed by deacetylation to get [1, 3, 4] oxadiazolenone core containing chalcones and nucleosides. Various analytical techniques viz IR, NMR, LC-MS and elemental analysis were used to confirm the structure of the synthesised compounds.The compounds were targeted against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli for antibacterial activity and Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger and Fusarium oxysporum for antifungal activity. Methods: A mixture of Acid hydrazides (3.0 mmol) and N, Nʹ- carbonyl diimidazole (3.3 mmol) in 15 mL of dioxane was refluxed to afford substituted [1, 3, 4]-oxadiazole-2(3H)-one. The resulted [1, 3, 4]- oxadiazole-2(3H)-one (1.42 mmol) was oxidized with Chromyl chloride (1.5 mL) in 20 mL of carbon tetra chloride and condensed with acetophenones (1.42 mmol) to get chalcones 4. The equimolar ratio of obtained chalcones 4 and β -D-1,2,3,4,6- penta-O-acetylglucopyranose in presence of iodine was refluxed to get nucleosides 5. The [1, 3, 4] oxadiazolenone core containing chalcones 4 and nucleosides 5 were tested to determined minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value with the experimental procedure of Benson using disc-diffusion method. All compounds were tested at concentration of 5 mg/mL, 2.5 mg/mL, 1.25 mg/mL, 0.62 mg/mL, 0.31 mg/mL and 0.15 mg/mL for antifungal activity against three strains of pathogenic fungi Aspergillus flavus (A. flavus), Aspergillus niger (A. niger) and Fusarium oxysporum (F. oxysporum) and for antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacterium: Escherichia coli (E. coli), and two Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Bacillus subtilis(B. subtilis). Result: The chalcones 4 and nucleosides 5 were screened for antibacterial activity against E. coli, S. aureus and B. subtilis whereas antifungal activity against A. flavus, A. niger and F. oxysporum. Compounds 4a-t showed good antibacterial activity whereas compounds 5a-t containing glucose moiety showed better activity against fungi. The glucose moiety of compounds 5 helps to enter into the cell wall of fungi and control the cell growth. Conclusion: Chalcones 4 and nucleosides 5 incorporating [1, 3, 4] oxadiazolenone core were synthesized and characterized by various spectral techniques and elemental analysis. These compounds were evaluated for their antifungal activity against three fungi; viz. A. flavus, A. niger and F. oxysporum. In addition to this, synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against gram negative bacteria E. Coli and gram positive bacteria S. aureus, B. subtilis. Compounds 4a-t showed good antibacterial activity whereas 5a-t showed better activity against fungi.

Carbon microspheres (CMSs) were used as the carrier to prepare the Ag-loading CMSs (Ag/CMSs) antibacterial agent through the method of chemical adsorption. The morphologies and structures of modified CMSs were characterized by using the field emission Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results showed that silver was absorbed on the surface of CMSs. The bacterial inhibition ring experiment showed that Ag/CMSs had good antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, meanwhile the diameters of the bacterial inhibition rings were 19 mm against Staphylococcus aureus and 21 mm against Escherichia coli, respectively.

Nudibranchs are marine invetebrates belongs to the class of Gastropoda that are able to camouflage and develop a self-defense systems. Marine bacteria contain chemicals compunds that have potentials on marine drugs discovery through the secondary metabolism. The purpose of this study was to isolate the symbiotic bacteria from nudibranches Phylidiella pustulosa and Thuridilla lineolate and to screen the antibacterial activity of these bacterial isolates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Isolation and culture of the symbiotic bacteria was made on B1 (solid) media. The results of the antibacterial assay showed that the symbiotic bacterial isolates from Phylidiella pustulosa and Thuridilla lineolate were able to inhibit the growth of the Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli test. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengisolasi bakteri yang bersimbion dengan nudibranch Phylidiella pustulosa dan Thuridilla lineolate, kemudian mengamati aktivitas antibakteri dari isolat bakteri tersebut terhadap Escherichia coli danStaphylococcus aureus. Isolasi dan kultur bakteri yang bersimbion dibuat pada media B1 (padat). Skrining aktivitas antibakteri menunjukkan isolat bakteri yang bersimbion dengan nudibranch Phylidiella pustulosa dan Thuridilla lineolate mampu menghambat pertumbuhan organisme uji Staphylococcus aureus dan Escherichia coli. Objective: To isolate and characterize novel actinomycetes and to evaluate their antibacterial activity against drug-resistant pathogenic bacteriaMethods: In the present study, 19 soil samples were collected from different localities of Ad-Dawadmi, Saudi Arabia. Actinomycetes were isolated from these samples using serial dilution and plating method on Actinomycetes isolation agar supplemented with nalidixic acid and actidione to inhibit bacteria and fungi. Crude extracts of potential actinomycetes were produced by submerged fermentation. The antimicrobial activity of crude extracts of actinomycetes was tested against different bacteria using the agar well diffusion method. Characterization of the isolates was done by morphological, physiological and biochemical methods.Results: A total of 9 (47%) isolates of actinomycetes were isolated from 19 different soil samples tested. Among them, 4 (44%) isolates confirmed as Streptomyces sp. showed potential antimicrobial activity against one or more test organisms. Crude extracts were made from these 4 actinomycetes isolates(DOM1, DOM3, DP3, DP4)and tested for their antibacterial activities against 4 different clinical bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus). Crude extract from DP3 isolate showed highest antibacterial activity against all the four test organisms (28 mm, 21 mm, 20 mm and 18 mm) respectively and DP4 showed lowest antibacterial activity against all the four test organisms (14 mm, 12 mm, 0 mm, 6 mm) respectively. The highest zone of inhibition was shown by DP3 against Staphylococcus aureus (28 mm) and Escherichia coli was resistant for DP4. Most of the Inhibition zones produced by crude extracts showed significant differences when compared with control, tested against test organisms (P<0.05). Inhibition zones produced by DP3 and DOM1 against Staphylococcus aureus were 28 mm and 23 mm, respectively which were strong active when compared with control Ciprofloxacin (18 mm).Conclusion: Further studies for purification of bioactive metabolites and molecular characterization analysis of isolated Streptomyces sp. are in progress which would be helpful in discovering novel compounds of commercial value.

Two new bis-Schiff bases containing a piperazine ring, N,N‘-bis(4-chlorobenzylidene)- and N,N‘-bis(4-cyanobenzylidene)-1,4-bis(3-aminopropyl)piperazine, were prepared by the reaction of N,N‘-bis(3-aminopropyl)piperazine with 4-chloro- and 4-cyanobenzaldehyde, respectively. The dichloro compound was fully identified by X-ray crystallography and it exhibited good antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis.

Abstract The phenolic compounds from various extracts of jabuticaba skin powder (JSP) were characterized in this study, and the antibacterial activity assessed. The phenolic compounds were extracted from the JSP using four methods: a) acetone extraction - 1 g JSP: 10 mL 70% acetone, resting for 2 hours; b) aqueous extract - 1 g JSP: 15 mL water, under agitation; c) ethanolic extract - 1 g JSP: 15 mL acidified ethanol, under agitation; and d) methanolic extract - 1 g JSP: 50 mL 50% methanol, under reflux. The antibacterial activity was evaluated by the agar diffusion assay, using Escherichia coli ATCC 11229, Salmonella choleraesuis ATCC 6539, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19117. The ethanolic and methanolic extracts showed the highest levels of phenolic compounds, especially of cyanidin chloride, catechin and epicatechin. The extracts did not inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and Salmonella choleraesuis, but inhibited 30% of the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa with an extract concentration of 250 µg mL-1. Against Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes the highest inhibitory effect observed was 41.8% for the ethanolic extract, followed by 36% inhibition by the methanolic extract, thus revealing the potential of these extracts as possible alternatives for use in the food and/or pharmaceutical industries.

Hornstedtia scyphifera var. fusiformis Holttum is endemic plant of Zingiberaceae family that distributed in Sumatera. Hornstedtia scyphifera var. fusiformis Holttum contained some secondary metabolite such as phenolic, saponin, triterpenoid and alkaloid. The biological activity of methanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane extracts from Hornstedtia scyphifera var. fusiformis Holttum suspended roots was tested for antibacterial and antioxydant activity. Antioxidant activity was analized by DPPH method. The antibacterial activity  was tested by used disk difussion method againts Staphylococcus aureus bacteria (gram-positive bacteria) and Escherichia coli (gram-negative bacteria). Almost all of Hornstedtia scyphifera var. fusiformis Holttum suspended roots extract were given antibacterial activity, nonetheless the biggest inhibition zone of Escherichia coli that was inhibited by n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts which have inhibition zone 10 mm at  concentration 500 mg/L and also againts Staphylococcus aureus, the biggest inhibition by ethyl acetate and n-hexane extracts which have inhibition zone 10.30 mm at concentration 500 mg/L. Among all extracts tested, methanol extract of the possessed moderate free radical scavenging activity with IC50 = 51.89 mg/L.

<p>Penelitian ini merupakan lanjutan dari penelitian sebelumnya tentang produksi asam galat dari limbah kulit buah lokal di Lombok. Limbah kulit buah lokal yang digunakan yaitu kulit buah kepundung (<em>Baccaurea racemosa</em> Muell.Arg), kulit buah juwet (<em>Syzygium cumini</em>), dan kulit buah manggis (<em>Garcinia mangostana</em>). Pada penelitian ini dilakukan pengujian asam galat yang dihasilkan, untuk mengetahui aktivitas antioksidan dan antibakteri. Pengujian sifat antioksidan dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode DPPH, sedangkan aktivitas antibakteri diuji dengan menggunakan metode difusi agar pada bakteri <em>Escherichia coli</em> dan <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em>. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa asam galat dari ketiga kulit buah memiliki aktivitas antioksidan. Asam galat dari kulit buah kepundung, kulit buah juwet dan kulit buah manggis memiliki IC<sub>50</sub> masing-masing sebesar 5.95; 5,96; dan 5,92 ppm. Berbeda dengan kemampuan sebagai antioksidan, asam galat resistan terhadap bakteri <em>Escherichia coli</em> dan <em>Staphylococcus aureus </em>yang menunjukkan bahwa asam galat tidak memiliki aktivitas sebagai antibakteri.</p><p><strong>Antibacterial and antioxidant activity of gallic acid from peel local fruit which produced by tannase. </strong>This research is a continuation of the previous research about the gallic acid production from peel fruit local in Lombok. The local fruit waste<em> </em>used<em> </em>are<em> kepundung rind (Baccaurea racemosa</em> Muell.Arg)<em>, juwet rind </em>(<em>Syzygium cumini</em>) <em>and mangosteen rind </em>(<em>Garcinia mangostana</em>)<em>. </em>In this research, the produced Gallic acid was tested to determine its antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The antioxidant test conducted by DPPH method, meanwhile, the antibacterial activity was performed by agar diffusion method to bacteria <em>Escherichia coli</em> and <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em>. The results show that the produce gallic acid from those three rind provide antioxidant activity. Gallic acid from kepundung rind, juwet rind, and mangosteen rind have IC<sub>50</sub> values of 5,95; 5,96; and 5,92,  respectively. Gallic acid not showed inhibitory actions against the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This result show that gallic acid from local fruit waste did not provide an antibacterial activity.</p>
