Abstrak Deletion in movie subtitling is a common practice due to limited space and time for subtitles to appear at the bottom of the screen. The limits are in terms of time for the subtitles to appear and be read by viewers and the number of characters to be shown on screen. Therefore, deletion is a strategy used especially for summarizing meaning or information from long dialogues. This is interesting because deletion should be implemented without deleting meanings or important information contained within the dialogues. Deletion is also considered to be used because viewers don't want to read long texts, as they are more focused on the scenes. This research is conducted to study types of deletion applied in movie subtitling and the impacts on delivering meanings to viewers. This research focuses on two movies, i.e. an adult action movie titled 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016) and a children animated movie titled Ice Age 5: Collision Course, in which English is the source language and Indonesian is the target language. These two movies are selected to compare deletion applied on action movies for adults and movies for children. This research applies deletion theory by Karamitroglou (1997) that summarizes deletion types in movie subtitling, such as functional expressions that don't contain semantic aspects, cumulative adjectives, and responsive expressions. Those three types of deletion don't interfere with delivery of meaning to viewers because they are supported by other aspects, such as dialogues, images, and music. The results of this research show that some taboo expressions are found in the adult action movie, whereas exclamations are found more in the animated movie. This is in line with the types of the movies, so selection of utterances for the subtitles is made according to the viewers' age. Some of the expressions are translated, while some other are not. This is due to technical aspects related to the number of characters that can be shown for each line of the subtitles. The translated expressions are responsive ones, like oh, fuck that, whoa, watch out, come on, all right, and yeah as well as cumulative adjectives, like a fucking massive heavy force. The types of expressions that are not translated are responsive utterances like Ew in the animated movie Ice Age 5, expressions that indicate additional information like (MEN ARGUING), (GUNSHOT), (LAUGHS) in the action movie 13 Hours, and expressions for additional information like (SCREAMING) and (GRUNTING) in Ice Age 5. The translated and untranslated expressions are functional expressions that don't contain semantic meaning, like well in both movies. Keywords: translation, deletion, expressions, strategy.

The article is devoted to the study of the features of reproducing English humor in the Ukrainian language. The relevance of the work is due to the urgent need for a comprehensive study of English-language humor as a text-discursive education and the features of its translation. The aim of the study is to analyze the specifics of reproducing English-language humor. As a result of the study, the author comes to the conclusion that the reproduction of English humorous discourse should take into account the national characteristics of the people, culture and traditions. Translation of humorous discourse requires the use of various transformations: lexical, grammatical (including syntactic and morphological), semantic, and stylistic. Often these types of transformations appear in a mixed form. The most effective transformations are: lexical, grammatical, and complex lexical and grammatical ones. The subject of research of this work is humor — the most common modern type of comic. The concept of humor is defined as a comprehensive phenomenon, a way of seeing, a way of life. The nature of humor depends on the linguistic and cultural characteristics of the country to which it belongs, which means that this phenomenon reproduces the national picture of the world. According to this, the translator should take into account the peculiarities of ethnic worldview in order to reproduce the content of discursive humorous education adequately. It is also necessary to be able to know at least something about the cultures involved in the translation in order to understand the original and be able to reproduce it. During the analysis, we determined that it is necessary to take into account the national nature of humor, because in different societies the same thing can cause different reactions, which leads to inadequate units of reproduction of the source language to the target language. Based on the fact that it is not always possible to fully reproduce the content and expressive-emotional coloring, compensation is considered the best lexical and semantic means of transmitting humor in the source language in the translation language. A necessary condition for translation is the selection of appropriate phonetic, lexical and phraseological means for transmitting not only the semantics of the humorous formation of the original language, but also their expressive and functional features

We propose a multilingual model to recognize Big Five Personality traits from text data in four different languages: English, Spanish, Dutch and Italian. Our analysis shows that words having a similar semantic meaning in different languages do not necessarily correspond to the same personality traits. Therefore, we propose a personality alignment method, GlobalTrait, which has a mapping for each trait from the source language to the target language (English), such that words that correlate positively to each trait are close together in the multilingual vector space. Using these aligned embeddings for training, we can transfer personality related training features from high-resource languages such as English to other low-resource languages, and get better multilingual results, when compared to using simple monolingual and unaligned multilingual embeddings. We achieve an average F-score increase (across all three languages except English) from 65 to 73.4 (+8.4), when comparing our monolingual model to multilingual using CNN with personality aligned embeddings. We also show relatively good performance in the regression tasks, and better classification results when evaluating our model on a separate Chinese dataset.

Culture is one of the main important challenges found in translating English into Indonesian language. This research aims to know the impact of cultural index on translation of Eclipse Novel by Stephenie Meyer. This research uses qualitative method and semiotic approach in translation. There are 30 data taken from Eclipse novel and its translation in Indonesian language. The results of this study show that (1) cultural index which used by translator as a way to defend the source culture and source language (henceforth SL) itself has a great impact on target language (henceforth TL). There are some translations which cannot be accepted in target language because the meaning is not available in Indonesian language, the other cultural index are accepted in TL as there are equivalence meaning that correspondence the SL; (2) as a way to solve the problem in translating culture, the translator uses transference and naturalization procedure. There are about 87% used transference procedure and 13% used naturalization. The general conclusion of this study shows that some of these strategies are not accurate in the target language so translators need to consider the selection of the right procedure so that the resulting translation can be accepted in the target language.

Ideology in the translation process is important in deciding towards what kind of direction the translation will go. If the primary purpose of the translation is to promote the culture, it is considered adequate to choose the foreignization over the domestication as the ideology of the translation when it comes to the translation of culture-specific items. However, deciding what ideology should be used in the translation process is complicated. There are many factors that can affect the ideology of a translation. Both ideologies can lead to totally different results of the accuracy of the meaning of the translations. This research was content analysis of Historical Book Discover Bengkulu The Land of Rafflesia. This research show that there are two ideologies that appeared in this translation such as foregnization ideology where oriented to source language and domestication ideology where oriented to target language.

Corpus based natural language processing has emerged with great success in recent years. It is not only used for languages like English, French, Spanish, and Hindi but also is widely used for languages like Tamil, Telugu etc. This paper focuses to increase the accuracy of machine translation from Hindi to Tamil by considering the word's sense as well as its part-of-speech. This system works on word by word translation from Hindi to Tamil language which makes use of additional information such as the preceding words, the current word's part of speech and the word's sense itself. For such a translation system, the frequency of words occurring in the corpus, the tagging of the input words and the probability of the preceding word of the tagged words are required. Wordnet is used to identify various synonym for the words specified in the source language. Among these words, the one which is more relevant to the word specified in source language is considered for the translation to target language. The introduction of the additional information such as part-of-speech tag, preceding word information and semantic analysis has greatly improved the accuracy of the system.

There frequently un-correspondences of word level, word unit, structure, and intra system in translation activities between those of the source language and those of the target language. This so-called shift of translation may also occur on the level of meaning, be it to the more specific meaning, to the more general meaning, or simply as the result of different nature between two languages. This phenomenon was also found by the researchers in the novel entitled “Para MujahidCinta” whichis the translated version from the Arabic of one of the most Egyptians best novelist Najīb Kīlānī, entitled Layālī Turkistān. The results of the research show that the translator, Shocheh Muhammad, employed such shift in his translation particularly in regards with the tarkīb iḍāfī, composite words with a solid meaning, to become reduced-adjective clause, reduced-adverb clause, or etcetera. Such changes in translation affirm that shifts may occur, not only by the need to deliver the meaning or message, but also –in a wider context- by the fact of different characteristics of languages. This is, to some extent, nothing to do with correspondence between two languages which is the basis of translation theories.

AbstractThis research aims to describe  the translation procedures, methods, and ideology  applied to translate novel Negeri 5 Menara, and assess the impact of the ideology on equivalence. This research is using qualitative approach and content analysis. The source of data for this research consists of documents that  refer to novel  Negeri 5 Menara and its translation in English. The units of analysis of this  research data comprise of words, phrases, sentences, and dialogue taken from Negeri 5 Menara Ahmad Fuadi’s Work and its translation (The Land of 5 Towers) by Angie Kilbane. Findings of this research show followings. First, translation procedures were used 90 times  to render Negeri 5 Menara into English.  On the basis of the frequent use of each translation procedures, functional equivalent (20) appears to be first rank, followed by cultural equivalent (19), reduction and couplets (10), transference and naturalization (7), descriptive equivalent (6), notes (4), transposition (3), and  modulation and compensation (2). Second, theoretically, transference and naturalisation are oriented to source language while cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalen, transposition, modulation, compensation, reduction, couplets, and notes are oriented to target language. This means that the translator tended to choose adaptation, free, idiomatic, and communicative methods. Third, the use of translation procedures and the selection the translation methods tend to be based on the adoption of the ideology of domestication. Fourth, in terms of the equivalence of the translations, it was found that 80 data were accurately translated and 10 data were inaccurately translated. Therefore, the domestication ideology has a good impact to the quality of translations. Keywords: ideology of translations, translation method, translation procedure, culture.

Lexicon plays a fundamental role in translation. A good and acceptable translation should successfully render the message of source language into target language by selecting appropriate lexicon. The incorrectly lexical choice will distort the message of the source language. This paper investigates the lexical errors found in the translation of Indonesian text into English text made by the fifth-semester students. The data collection was conducted by administering a translation test to the respondents of 30 students. The data were analyzed using error analysis method following 5 steps: elicitation, registering, identifying, categorizing, and evaluating. The analysis and interpretation found that the lexical distortions can be categorized into: omission, overinclusion, misselection, disordering, and blending. Misselection is found to be the most dominant error followed respectively by omission, misordering, overinclusion, and blending. The findings show that the main problem of the translation is the wrong selection of lexicon and can contribute to the evaluation teaching-learning process either theoretically or practically. As a result, the improvement of students’ translation quality requires students to practice more and more. In addition, the teaching of translation should be focused primarily on the selection of lexicon.
