Murabahah is one of the most dominant financing agreement applied in Islamic banking including Indonesia. Bank Muamalat Indonesia (BMI) and Bank Aceh Shariah (BAS) are two of many Islamic banks that have murabahah as a dominant product. Bank Muamalat Indonesia has 60%-70% murabahah financing out of its financing total, while Bank Aceh Sharia offers up to 97% of its financing fund for murabahah. This domination is related to its high compensations for customers that influence the increasing demand of this product. This article aims to determine the mechanism profit determination of murabahah financing at BMI and BAS in Banda Aceh. It is also aimed to examine the influence of Bank Indoensia’s rate to the determination of profit margin for murabahah at those banks. This study employs a comparative study analysis with qualitative approach. The findings show that the mechanism for profit determination was decided based on recommendation and suggestions from the Islamic banks ALCO Team Meeting. However, both Bank Muamalat Indonesia and Bank Aceh Shariah differ from determining the level of annual lending rate. It turns out that the determination of high or low margin was affected by internal and external factors. While the BI rate played as a benchmark (reference) for the banks to set a price in order to be competitive and also to calculate the possibility of inflation.

Purpose This study aims to explore the potential determinants of customers’ satisfaction with the Islamic banking system and highlights the fact that both internal and external factors play key roles in customer satisfaction (CS) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach Primary data from six Islamic banks (Al Baraka Bank Ltd, BankIslami Pakistan Ltd, Burj Bank Ltd, Dubai Islamic Bank Ltd, Meezan Bank Ltd and MCB-Islamic Bank Ltd) were analysed using a binary logit method. Findings The results showed that internal factors such as hand sanitisation facilities, strict compliance with wearing a mask before entering the bank, the distance between customers and dealing officers, an organised network of branches (in terms of health safety protocols), the behaviour of dealing officers and extended banking hours contributed significantly to enhancing the satisfaction of Islamic banking customers during the pandemic in Pakistan. The results showed that high service charges on loans have a significant adverse impact on CS. Concerning external factors, the results showed that mass media platforms that can update customers about new services and customer transactions’ processing timing, the number of operational branches in the pandemic period, available parking space in front of a bank and recommendations from family and friends to open an account with a particular bank increase CS levels. Practical implications The study’s results will be helpful for the policymakers and practitioners to design such policies that can promote the Islamic banking system in developing countries such as Pakistan. Originality/value Under the pandemic situation, the present study highlights the internal and external determinants of Islamic banking customers’ satisfaction in Pakistan. The study provides a foundation for Islamic Banks to revise their policy frameworks and marketing strategies to attract customer interest and improve their satisfaction levels.

Islamic banking is based on profit and loss mechanism where the use of interest is prohibited. Unlike conventional banks, these banks do not charge a specific rate of interest, rather provides financing in exchange for profit sharing. However, there are studies claiming that, in practice, Islamic banking is same as conventional banking with regard to the use of interest. It is also claimed that, Islamic deposits are not interest-free, but are closely attached to conventional deposits. On this background, the objective of this study is to examine the relationship between pricing in Islamic banks vis-à-vis conventional banks by taking the case of Bangladesh. We have used monthly data during the period of 2009-2013. The findings of the study showed that, there is no statistically significant difference between the monthly average lending rates of Islamic banks and conventional banks. However, there is significant difference between deposit rates. The existence of causal relationship was inconclusive, and requires further analysis.

The problem of Islamic economics is also increasingly complex with the large number of banks. To meet the needs of transactions, banks have products that are offered to the public. In accordance with the function of the bank, namely collecting and distributing funds to the public. The purpose of channeling funds by Islamic banks is to support the implementation of development, improve justice, togetherness and equal distribution of people's welfare. This paper will answer what is the meaning of al-mashaqqah tajlib al-taysir and how do the Implications of al-mashaqqah tajlib al-taysir in the development of Islamic economy? The result of research shows that the meaning of the rule of al-mashaqqah tajlib al-taysir is the difficulty of bringing convenience. The point is that if implementing a provision of shara' mukallaf faces obstacles in the form of difficulties and limitations that exceed the limits of reasonable capabilities, then the difficulty automatically creates relief provisions. In other words, if we find difficulty in carrying out something that is to be sharia, then the difficulty becomes a justifiable cause to facilitate in carrying out something that is to be provision of sharia, so that we can continue to run the sharia of Allah easily. The implications raised by the rules of al-mashaqqah tajlib al-taysir are the determination of the law of Islamic financial institutions. This impact is seen when Islamic law allows transactions in Islamic banking financial institutions, so that the community will easily meet the needs by transacting with Islamic banking through contracts that have been agreed upon. Keywords: al-Mashaqqah Tajlib al-Taysir, Islamic Economic Development

This article review Islamic law quoted from jurists’ opinion and legal experts on the use of auction trading theory in the collateral sale. Every financial transaction in Islamic banking required a guarantee. It is intended to save bank funds if the customer defaults. Based on constitutional act Number 4 of 1996 of mortgage rights, Islamic banks have the right to confiscate the asset (guarantees) of a customer who has reached the due date without intention to pay. However, the bank cannot carry out unilateral execution to make direct sales. The formal procedures which banks must follow to disburse funds from customer guarantees are usually long and often meet various obstacles. This article analyzes normatively and empirically the bail auction guarantees implementation on Islamic banking in Aceh based on the Islamic law concept from the al Quran, Hadith, and the scholars’ Ijma’. Although conventional law is still used in the auction rules, the implementation of guarantees as applied to Islamic banking has adopted many Islamic laws. However, in the practice, there are still many problems that arise from the Islamic law scope which uphold the philosophy of maslahah and the concept of justice. The paper, therefore, employs qualitative approach and secondary date to investigate Shariah perspective against execution of collateral auctions on Islamic banking institutions in Aceh, Indonesia.

The profit-sharing system is the main characteristic of Islamic banking that distinguishes them from conventional (ribawi) banking. However, in reality, the profit-sharing contract is rarely implemented in Islamic banking. As a result, Islamic banking is still identified as ribawi banking. Many Islamic economists have examined the reasons behind fixed income contracts, especially murabahah contract that applied predominantly, structurally, systematically and massively compared to the profit-sharing contract. Therefore, with a critical analytical approach, this study aims to dismantle and look for solution towards exploitation of fixed income-based financing in Indonesian sharia banking. The results of this study are fixed income-based financing should be applied limited to covering the operational costs of Islamic banks but the remainder must be channelled based on profit-sharing systems. Meanwhile, funding for profit-sharing systems is intended to gain profits and cover the operational cost variables. Thus, predatory exploitation of Islamic banks in Indonesia can be minimized by maintaining the composition of the maximum financing about forty per cent which is a fixed-yield based and leave the rest to a profit-sharing system. Then, the more equitable Islamic bank system and Islamic economic goals will be created and offer benefits such as the achieving of the objectives of Islamic sharia (maqashid shariah) and minimizing the image of Islamic banks as ribawi bank.
