This observational study analyzed the prevalence of arrhythmias in healthcare students using a retrospective cohort of quantitative approach. The research was carried out with the application of a structured interview and an electrocardiogram. Students from pharmacy, biomedicine,medicine, psychology, and nursing courses participated. A higher prevalence of arrhythmias was demonstrated in medical students with no statistical significance. What groups had in common was the presence of symptoms that may or may not be related to cardiovascular changes, such as dizziness and palpitation, which may be directly related to the high emotional demand from academic activities overload.

Background: Substance abuse is a pandemic among adults. We carried out this study to know the prevalence of tobacco and alcohol use among II prof MBBS students. The objective was to know the prevalence of tobacco and alcohol use among II prof MBBS students.Methods: An observational study aimed find out the prevalence of alcohol and tobacco abuse. During the period of January 2015 to October 2015 and 100 student from 2nd professional of a medical college from Central India were interviewed using semi structured interview schedules for students.Results: Total students in our study that ever tried alcohol smoking was 62%, among which 47% continued and 53% discontinued. Among 100 participants 55 were male and 45 were female. Out of 100 student 62 were tried alcohol/smoking once in their life time. 13 students were exposed to substance abuse at during their school life, 7 were started during preparation of medical entrance and 42 were started it after coming to college. 12 participants were who were regular using alcohol were belong to family where either one or both parents were doctors among them. Most of the participants were influenced by their friends, 27% were started it for their own gratitude and 9.6% were have seen their family members. 21% participant were involved in indisciplinary activities.Conclusions: The substance abuse is highly prevalent among youngster and the prevalence of substance abuse among female were also significant which is highly alarming situation.

Background: Regular voluntary unpaid blood donation assures safe blood supply in association with minimum infection transmission. The purpose of this study was to identify the frequency of regular voluntary blood donation and to evaluate the causes of donating blood as well as factors impeding blood donations among the medical and nonmedical students of Karachi. Methods: A comparative cross sectional study was conducted among medical and nonmedical students of JSMU and NED University respectively from May to October 2018. Sample size was 272 including 137 medical and 135 non-medical students. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 22.0. Chi-square test of independence/ Fischer’s exact test were applied to assess statistical significance. Result: In medical group 5/21(23.8%) voluntary regular donors were recorded. In non-medical group, voluntary regular donors were found to be 8/30 (26.6%) (p>0.00). Medical students most commonly 15/21 (71.4%) donated blood voluntarily in a camp while non-medical participants frequently donated blood as replacement donors 13/30 (43.3%) (p>0.00). Major hindering factor for blood donation in both study groups was non-participation in blood donation derives i.e. 66/116 (56.8%) in medical and 53/105 (50.4%) in non-medical groups respectively. Anemia, 20/116 (17.2%) in medical and 15/105 (14.2%) in nonmedical students was the second major cause of not donating blood. Conclusion: The frequency of regular voluntary blood donations is very low among undergraduates. However, comparatively, the trend is slightly higher among non-medical group. The major hindrance in not donating blood was non-participation in blood donating derives.

Abstract Background Acute foetal distress (AFD) is a life-threatening foetal condition complicating 2% of all pregnancies and accounting for 8.9% of caesarean sections (CS) especially in developing nations. Despite the severity of the problem, no evidence exists as to the safest anaesthetic technique for the mother and foetus couple undergoing CS for AFD. We aimed to compare general anaesthesia (GA) versus regional (spinal and epidural) anaesthesia in terms of their perioperative maternal and foetal outcomes. Methods We carried out a retrospective cohort study by reviewing the medical records of all women who underwent CS indicated for AFD between 2015 to 2018 at the Douala General Hospital, Cameroon. Medical records of neonates were also reviewed. We sought to investigate the association between GA, and regional anaesthesia administered during CS for AFD and foetal and maternal outcomes. The threshold of statistical significance was set at 0.05. Results We enrolled the medical records of 117 pregnant women who underwent CS indicated for AFD. Their mean age and mean gestational age were 30.5 ± 4.8 years and 40 weeks respectively. Eighty-three (70.9%), 29 (24.8%) and 05 (4.3%) pregnant women underwent CS under SA, GA and EA respectively. Neonates delivered by CS under GA were more likely to have a significantly low APGAR score at both the 1st (RR = 1.93, p = 0.014) and third-minute (RR = 2.52, p = 0.012) and to be resuscitated at birth (RR = 2.15, p = 0.015). Past CS, FHR pattern on CTG didn’t affect these results in multivariate analysis. Adverse maternal outcomes are shown to be higher following SA when compared to GA. Conclusion The study infers an association between CS performed for AFD under GA and foetal morbidity. This, however, failed to translate into a difference in perinatal mortality when comparing GA vs RA. This finding does not discount the role of GA, but we emphasize the need for specific precautions like adequate anticipation for neonatal resuscitation to reduce neonatal complications associated with CS performed for AFD under GA.

Abstract Objective: To investigate the association between maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and offspring body composition in adulthood. Design: Retrospective cohort. Undergraduates of nutrition or nutritionists were recruited at the baseline of the Nutritionists’ Health Study between 2014 and 2017. Maternal pre-pregnancy BMI and current life aspects were self-reported through online questionnaires. Three body compartments were DXA-determined. The following variables were obtained: body-fat (%), fat mass index (FMI) (kg/m2), android-to-gynoid fat ratio, visceral adipose tissue (VAT) (cm3), appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) (kg/m2), total bone and femur mineral content (g) and density (g/cm2). Linear regression adjusted according to directed acyclic graphs recommendation was performed. Setting: São Paulo, Brazil. Participants: Healthy non-pregnant women (aged 20-45 years) (n=150). Results: Median age and BMI were 22 years (IQR=20; 29) and 22.3 kg/m2 (IQR=20.4; 25.3). Pre-pregnancy BMI≥25 kg/m2 was reported by 14.7% of mothers. In fully adjusted models, maternal pre-pregnancy BMI was associated with their daughters’ body-fat % (β=0.31; 95%CI=0.0004; 0.63), FMI (β=0.17; 95%CI=0.03; 0.30, android-to-gynoid ratio (β=0.01; 95%CI=0.004; 0.02) and VAT (β=0.09; 95%CI=0.02; 0.16), but not with total bone density (β=0.001; 95%CI=-0.003; 0.006) and content (β=7.13; 95%CI=-4.19; 18.46). Direct association with ASMI was also detected, but lost statistical significance when participants whose mothers were underweight were excluded. Conclusions: Maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index was directly associated with offspring general and visceral adiposity but seem not to be associated with bone mass. Results reinforce importance of avoiding excess of maternal adiposity, as an attempt to break the vicious cycle of obesity transmission.

Objective: To examine the clinical relevance of isolated pontine hyperintense lesions(PHLs) on MRI in patients with atherosclerosis.Methods: Seventeen atherosclerotic patients with isolated PHL on MRI were compared with 17 patients without PHL and were matched for age, sex, and initial manifestation of atherosclerosis. Subjects and observer were blinded to the MRI findings. We assessed symptoms, impairment, and disability with a structured interview and neurologic examination as well as disability scales.Results: On all items, patients with PHL scored worse that did their controls. We found the largest differences in frequencies of symptoms of disequilibrium, difficulties with speech or swallowing, the Timed Walking Test, and the body care and movement subscale of the Sickness Impact Profile. Except for disequilibrium (p = 0.04), these differences did not reach statistical significance. Abnormal tandem-walking tests were more frequent in patients than they were in controls. Pyramidal signs were equally distributed.Conclusions: We propose PHL as a cause of symptoms of disequilibrium in patients with atherosclerosis. Symptoms are probably elicited by dysfunction of the corticopontine fibers, the pontocerebellar fibers, or the pontine nuclei.

The study aims to analyze the influence of breast feeding towards the puerperal period in Primary Health Care Trucuk I Klaten in the year of 2015. This research is the type of analytical research that uses the design of retrospective cohort with the quantitative approach. The sample uses purposive sampling. The total sample are 86  mothers who breastfeed fully and 86 mothers who breastfeed partially. The result of the analysis shows that there are 103 (59,9%) cases of short peurperal period. The variable that significantly influence the puerperal period is breastfeeding (OR = 34,550; 95% CI = 12,925-92,353) and parity (OR = 0,404; 95% CI = 0,170-0,963). Meanwhile, the variables that have no significant influence the puerperal period is IMD (95% CI=0,756-11,045), mother age (95% CI = 0,221-1,096), and the status of mother employment (95% CI=0,744-2,731).

Introduction. English for Specific Purposes focuses on teaching and learning subject specific knowledge which includes specific language skills that particular learners need for a specific purpose. Self-efficacy is determined by subjective beliefs about one?s own abilities, which also applies to the academic setting of studying English for Specific Purposes. Academic self-efficacy represents the conviction of students about their own abilities to successfully fulfil academic tasks at designated levels. The goal of this research is to examine the degree of academic self-efficacy of medical students who learn English for Specific purposes at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Novi Sad, with respect to their gender, year of study, grade achieved in the previous course in English, and the length of learning English before enrolling in the Faculty. Material and Methods. The study included 58 medical students. The researchers used the College Academic Self-Efficacy Scale questionnaire developed by Owen and Froman (1988) to assess academic self-efficacy. Results. Three significant factors were identified: general self-competence, communication with the professor, and attendance at lectures, with general self-competence being the most significant factor. Considering the independent variables, only the grade showed statistical significance. Establishing the grade as such a significant predictor can be explained by the fact that good grades and a high grade point average are presented as very desirable outcomes. However, a good grade does not necessarily mean having better knowledge or correct use of language. Conclusion. Further research into this topic is necessary, with expanding the number of participants, study programs and variables.

Abstract Purpose: Students’ approaches to learning are central to the process of learning. There is strong debate about the efficiency of traditional learning program (TLP) and the integrated learning program (ILP) in medical schools. TLP is easy for the students being passive learners and for the tutors playing the role of sage on the stage. ILP is mainly student centered in which the students are active learners with mentoring of their tutors. It is important to know the perspectives of medical school students about both programs as they used to apply TLP in the 1st year and starting ILP from the 2nd year. Methodology: This study adopted quantitative research methodology. We addressed the 2nd and 3rd year medical students. Online survey using the Google forms was applied for data collection. Results: agreement of the integrated program (80.8%) exceeded the traditional (48.5%) especially in improving the communication skills, dealing with new technologies, reinforcement of competencies in the research field, and to less extent for its suitability to be applied in medical schools nowadays, development of desired doctor skills to deal with patients and for provision of good approach for medical practice, and lastly for its suitability to identify and deal with the community needs. There was no statistical significance between both programs regarding support of professionalism values. The disagreement of ILP (19.2%) was much lower than TLP (51.5%). Conclusion: Integrated learning program becomes an innovative tool for learning in medical schools with very good compliance among the medical students.

Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the knowledge of ALS among students in a university in Malaysia. Methods: A cross-sectional and observational study was performed among the students of three different healthcare provider faculties (Medical, Pharmacy and Dental) in a university with the help of pre-validated research questionnaire. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 24.0 was used to analyze and present the data. Results: A total of 268 university students from three faculties participated in the current study. The medical faculty students and final year students had more appropriate knowledge towards the ALS. Conclusion: Overall appropriate knowledge was observed among the studied faculty students. The present study concluded that medical students had adequate knowledge of ALS than the other two faculty students.
