The antioxidant activity (AA) of various extracts of grape marc (Vitis vinifera L.) was studied. Radical absorption activity (RAA) was calculated in reactions with DPPH+ and ABTS•+ radicals and AA in rat liver homogenate by two markers of oxidative stress (OS): contents of thiobarbiturative products and carbonyl groups of proteins. All the extracts showed antioxidant activity. Water-based extract and 96 % ethanol extract obtained via heat bath method were inhibitors of the formation of free radical oxidation of lipids and proteins. 96% ethanol extract is promising for the development of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.

Buas (Premna serratifolia L.) contains secondary metabolites of flavonoids, saponins, tannins and triterpenoids/steroids, where flavonoids are known to have antioxidant properties and counteract free radicals. Antioxidants are compounds that can fight toxic hazards and reduce cell damage to the body caused by free radical oxidation. The purpose of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts of buas-buas leaves was carried out by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at wavelength 518.40 nm with various concentrations of 10 ppm, 20 ppm, 30 ppm, 40 ppm and 50 ppm. The results showed that Buas Buas leaves (Premna serratifolia L.) had an antioxidant activity with IC50 values ??of 20.66 ug / mL.

AbstractSample particle size is an important parameter in the solid–liquid extraction system of natural products for obtaining their bioactive compounds. This study evaluates the effect of sample particle size on the phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity of brown macroalgae Sargassum cristaefolium. The crude ethanol extract was extracted from dried powders of S.cristeafolium with various particle sizes (> 4000 µm, > 250 µm, > 125 µm, > 45 µm, and < 45 µm). The ethanolic extracts of S.cristaefolium were analysed for Total Phenolic Content (TPC), Total Flavonoid Content (TFC), phenolic compound concentration and antioxidant activities. The extract yield and phytochemical composition were more abundant in smaller particle sizes. Furthermore, the TPC (14.19 ± 2.08 mg GAE/g extract to 43.27 ± 2.56 mg GAE/g extract) and TFC (9.6 ± 1.8 mg QE/g extract to 70.27 ± 3.59 mg QE/g extract) values also significantly increased as particle sizes decreased. In addition, phenolic compounds epicatechin (EC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epigallocatechin (EGC), and Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) concentration were frequently increased in samples of smaller particle sizes based on two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s multiple comparison analysis. These results correlate with the significantly stronger antioxidant activity in samples with smaller particle sizes. The smallest particle size (< 45 µm) demonstrated the strongest antioxidant activity based on DPPH, ABTS, hydroxyl assay and FRAP. In addition, ramp function graph evaluates the desired particle size for maximum phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity is 44 µm. In conclusion, current results show the importance of particle size reduction of macroalgae samples to increase the effectivity of its biological activity.

Plant natural products have a long history of being a rich source of neuroactive drugs.The total phenolic and flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity of ethanol, chloroform and aqueous extracts of AlgerianMedicagoSativaL, leaves were measured to discover new potential sources of Algerian natural antioxidants and neuroactives. All extracts were non-neurotoxic up to 1 mg/ ml for 24 h exposure. The total phenolcontent of M.Sativa extracts ranged between 38 and 69 mg GAE per g extracts. All of the extracts displayed antioxidant capacityassessed by two methods, but at different levels depending on the concentration and the extraction solvent used. The overall antioxidant potency was in the order water > chloroform> ethanol extracts, and the phenolic content exhibited a positive correlation with the antioxidant activity of M. Sativa extracts.Despite a weaker antioxidant activity, the ethanol extract elicited a calcium spike and suppressed the KCl-induced depolarisation response in neurons, indicating effect on ligand-and/or voltage gated calcium channels. In contrast, the chloroform and water extractsdisplayed no apparent direct functional effects. In conclusion, the antioxidant and functional properties related to phenolic content of Algerian Medicago Sativa L. in water and ethanol extracts, respectively.

Background: Binjai (Mangifera caesia) is a herb derived from South Kalimantan possessing antioxidant properties which promote wound healing inhibiting oxidation radicals. The natural antioxidants present in binjai leaves can be extracted by fractionation. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate fraction in 96% ethanol extract of binjai leaf. Methods: The study constituted a pure experimental study incorporating a post-test design with only random sampling technique consisting of two groups, namely; an ethyl acetate fraction as the treatment group and ascorbic acid as the positive control group. The leaves were treated in accordance with the soxhlet method and subsequently fractionated to extract ethyl acetate fraction. This was used to measure antioxidant activity with DPPH radical damping method using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. A linear regression calculation was performed with a standard curve to quantify the IC50 value, before the ethyl acetate fraction underwent a qualitative test of secondary metabolite. Results: An independent t-test indicated significant differences between groups, an average value of IC50 in ascorbic acid of 13.812 ppm with 0.996 linearity and a fraction of ethyl acetate 38.526 ppm with a linearity of 0.999. In contrast, at this linearity value ascorbic acid and ethyl fraction acetate demonstrate a very high linear connection between concentration and inhibition. A secondary metabolite test conducted on the ethyl acetate fraction produced positive results for flavonoid, tannins, and phenol. Conclusion: Based on the IC50 parameters, the fraction of ethyl acetate in 96% ethanol extract of binjai leaf produces very strong antioxidant activity in the content of the compounds in the fraction, namely: flavonoid, tannins and phenol.

Toxic effects of heavy metals on animals and humans is aggravating the presence of surfactants. The aim of our research was to identify the peculiarities of free radical oxidation and antioxidant protection in the use of drinking water with subtoxic doses of potassium and sodium stearates in combination with copper on the body of warmblooded animals, such as the liver of experimental rats. Analysis of indicators allows asserting that in experimental rats liver homogenate observed activation of free radical oxidation, the intensity of which depended on the concentration of stearates in water. More pronounced changes were in animals that consumed water with potassium stearate.The action of potassium stearate observed inhibition of antioxidant systems while under the influence of sodium stearate – its activation. Changes in performance were more pronounced in combination stearates with copper.

Melastoma malabathricum and Chromolaena odorata are classified under broad-leaved weeds that are widely spread in the open land area. Melastoma malabathricum is commonly known as ‘‘senduduk’’, and C. odorata is locally known as “Pokok Kapal Terbang”. Both weeds are categorized as potential weeds as they have high nutritive value and are rich in chemical compounds. This study aimed to determine their chemical constituents and possible potential for antioxidant activity as these weeds have been reported to possess antioxidant properties. Screening of the plants was performed using standard methods and revealed the existence of various secondary metabolites such as saponins, terpenoids, phenols, tannins, and flavonoids of both weed extracts. Antioxidant activity was validated by the DPPH radical scavenging assay of M. malabathricum and C. odorata crude ethanol extract. The IC50 values for the percentage radical scavenging effects for the extracts were determined. The IC50 value of M. malabatrichum extract was 81.116 μg/mL, C. odorata was 312.903 μg/mL, Vitamin C was 31.023 μg/mL and BHA was 71.521 μg/mL respectively. The study showed that the antioxidant activity of M. malabatrichum was more potent and better than C. odorata.

Eight thia fatty acids and other sulfides have been studied as inhibitors of autoxidation of arachidonic acid. The inhibitors extend the lag phase of the oxidation, to varying degrees. A carboxyl group in the vicinity of the sulfur reduces the antioxidant activity, while unsaturated sulfides are more effective than their saturated analogues. The results are consistent with the sulfides acting to reduce fatty acid hydroperoxides, which otherwise accumulate during the early stages of reaction and propagate the free-radical oxidation process.

Teucrium poliumL. (Lamiaceae) (RDC 1117) is a medicinal plant whose species have been used for over 2000 years in traditional medicine due to its diuretic, diaphoretic, tonic, antipyretic, antispasmodic and cholagogic properties. The therapeutic benefit of medicinal plants is often attributed to their antioxidant properties. We previously reported that an aqueous extract of the leaves and stems of this plant could inhibit iron-induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver homogenate at concentrations that were not toxic to cultured hepatic cells. Others have reported that organic extracts of the aerial components of this plant could inhibit oxidative processes. Against this background, we felt further investigation on the antioxidant action of the extract ofT. poliumprepared according to traditional Arab medicine was warranted. Accordingly, we assessed (i) its ability to inhibit (a) oxidation of β-carotene, (b) 2,2′-azobis(2-amidinopropan) dihydrochloride (AAPH)-induced plasma oxidation and (c) iron-induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver homogenates; (ii) to scavenge the superoxide ($${\hbox{ O }}_{2}^{\bullet -}$$) radical and the hydroxyl radical (OH•); (iii) its effects on the enzyme xanthine oxidase activity; (iv) its capacity to bind iron; and (v) its effect on cell glutathione (GSH) homeostasis in cultured Hep G2 cells. We found that the extract (i) inhibited (a) oxidation of β-carotene, (b) AAPH-induced plasma oxidation (c) Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver homogenates (IC50 = 7 ± 2 μg ml−1); (ii) scavenged $${\hbox{ O }}_{2}^{\bullet -}$$(IC50 = 12 ± 3 μg ml−1) and OH• (IC50 = 66 ± 20 μg ml−1); (iii) binds iron (IC50 = 79 ± 17 μg ml−1); and (iv) tended to increase intracellular GSH levels resulting in a decrease in the GSSG/GSH ratio. These results demonstrate that the extract prepared from theT. poliumpossesses antioxidant activityin vitro. Further investigations are needed to verify whether this antioxidant effect occursin vivo.

The aim of this study was to determine the procedure parameters, including drying, extracting and pH on the antioxidant activity and antioxidative compounds in Perilla frutescens leaves. The extraction of antioxidants from Perilla frutescens leaves is studied considering different drying and extracting procedures to investigate the selectivity of the process. The radical-scavenging activity (RSA) of 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the determination of the total phenolic content are applied to evaluate the antioxidant activity and antioxidative compounds of the Perilla frutescens leave extracts. The highest antioxidant activity is observed for the extract obtained by freeze drying, extracting by ultrasound with 80% methanol adjusted at pH 4.The antioxidant compound extraction yield was also the highest at these extraction conditions. The total phenol contents among the Perilla frutescens leave extracts produced by different drying procedures were similar, while the antioxidant activities were different This concluding that the amount of phenolic compounds extracted was similar but the type and probable structure of the phenolic changed during heat-drying procedure providing in this way. Our study showed that proper process technology could ultimately extract compounds potentially effective against diseases related to free radical oxidation.
