Neolepenism is a new type of energy efficient architecture that could respond to the challenges of sustainable development, primarily as a passive means of protection in the fight against the effects of global warming and climate change. The author improved and optimized the positive experiences of the architecture of Lepenski Vir (Serbia) and made a model of a small family house of neolepenism with a flat roof, which he presented at the 50th International Congress and Exhibition on HVAC in Belgrade in 2019. During the presentation of the model, in the discussion at the exhibition, the question was asked: "Can this architecture be applied in climatic conditions with frequent occurrence of morning fog?" Using the meteorological databases of the Meteonorm program and the typical meteorological years for Ljubljana (Slovenia), as well as the previously developed program in Excel that was used in calculations for this architecture of neolepenism, the author presents the results for Ljubljana, a city located in the valley and where morning fogs are common. In meteorological data, the appearance of frequent morning fog is manifested through a reduced intensity of direct solar radiation in the morning. The paper presents conclusions concerning the optimal orientation of neolepenism buildings for this type of climate depending on the energy class of the building. The obtained results at the level of the whole year indicate that for the needs of heating, the eastern orientation is slightly better than the southern one for the buildings of energy class B, while for the less isolated buildings, the southern orientation has a slight advantage. For the area of Ljubljana, the orientation of the neolepenism building does not play a significant role for heating needs, but still the author believes that the originally assumed eastern orientation should be kept as optimal, due to the need for cooling during the summer season. However, in addition to good thermal insulation, the compactness of the form of neolepenism architecture also plays a crucial role in saving energy and achieving thermal comfort.

This study provides the analysis of drought conditions of vegetation period in 1982-2014 year in two Lithuanian regions: Kaunas and Telšiai. To identify drought conditions the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was applied. SPI was calculated using the long-term precipitation record of 1982–2014 with in-situ meteorological data. Calculation step of SPI was taken 1 month considering only vegetation period (May, June, July, August, September). The purpose of investigation was to evaluate the humidity/aridity of vegetation period and find out the probability of droughts occurrence under Lithuanian climatic conditions. It was found out that according SPI results droughts occurred in 14.5 % of all months in Kaunas region and in 15.8 % in Telšiai region. Wet periods in Kaunas region occurred in 15.8 %, and in Telšiai region occurrence of wet periods was – 18.8 % from all evaluated months. According SPI evaluation near normal were 69.7 % of total months during period of investigation in Kaunas and respectively – 65.5 % in Telšiai. The probability for extremely dry period under Lithuania climatic conditions are pretty low – 3.0 % in middle Lithuania and 2.4 % in western part of Lithuania.

ABSTRACTCollaborative work between Brookhaven and Los Alamos National Laboratories is developing a new type of linear accelerator that uses a high-power, picosecond pulse CO2 laser to irradiate a specialized form of grating with a pitch of 10.6 microns. The electromagnetic field that results can be used to accelerate electrons at field gradients of several GeV/m with potential efficiencies much better than current accelerators. The grating must be conductive to minimize resistive losses, be able to withstand high fields without damage, and requires dimensional tolerances in the sub-micron range. These requirements focus attention on grating material selection, microfabrication methods, and metrological methods used for quality control. At present, several types of gratings have been manufactured by reactive ion etching of fused silica in CHF 3/Ar or etching silicon with KOH/H 2O or ethylenediamine-pyrocatechol solutions. Metrological analysis of the gratings has begun with a Tracor Northern 5700 digital image analyzer.

ABSTRACT We identified a new type of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) from two community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. The novel element, designated type IV SCCmec, had a unique combination of the class B mec gene complex and the type 2 ccr gene complex and was much smaller in size (21 to 24 kb) than previously identified SCCmec elements of hospital-acquired MRSA. Consistent with the strains' susceptibilities to various non-β-lactam antibiotics, the type IV SCCmec was devoid of any antibiotic resistance genes other than the mecA gene.

Abstract The influences of climate on the retention capability of green roof have been widely discussed in existing literature. However, knowledge on how the retention capability of green roof is affected by the tropical climate is limited. This paper highlights the retention performance of the green roof situated in Kuching under hot-humid tropical climatic conditions. Using the green roof water balance modelling approach, this study simulated the hourly runoff generated from a virtual green roof from November 2012 to October 2013 based on past meteorological data. The result showed that the overall retention performance was satisfactory with a mean retention rate of 72.5% from 380 analysed rainfall events but reduced to 12.0% only for the events that potentially trigger the occurrence of flash flood. By performing the Spearman rank's correlation analysis, it was found that the rainfall depth and mean rainfall intensity, individually, had a strong negative correlation with event retention rate, suggesting that the retention rate increases with decreased rainfall depth. The expected direct relationship between retention rate and antecedent dry weather period was found to be event size dependent.

Heterogeneous network is supposed to be the dominant network architecture of the fifth generation (5G) cellular network, which means small cells are overlaid on the macrocell. The beamforming (BF) and cell expansion are two important approaches to serve users in small cells. Furthermore, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a new type of multiple access multiplexing which improves system performance without taking up extra spectrum resources. Therefore, it becomes one promising technique in 5G. In this paper, NOMA is applied in a 5G heterogeneous network with biased small cells. The BF strategy and the multiuser scheduling method are proposed. The main user in NOMA is scheduled inside the original coverage of the small cell while the side user is chosen from the biased expansion area. The BF strategy that is executed depends on the channel of main user. The multiuser scheduling method is to maximize the rate performance. The proposed method can provide performance benefits. Simulation results show that the proposed methods can be well applied in heterogeneous networks. The achieved performance gain is approximately twice better than traditional OMA and has 10% improvement to the stochastic schedule method. In addition, the average rate of cell edge users is improved.

Kernel extended dictionary learning model (KED) is a new type of Sparse Representation for Classification (SRC), which represents the input face image as a linear combination of dictionary set and extended dictionary set to determine the input face image class label. Extended dictionary is created based on the differences between the occluded images and non-occluded training images. There are four defaults to make about KED: (1) Similar weights are assigned to the principle components of occlusion variations in KED model, while the principle components of the occlusion variations have different weights, which are proportional to the principle components Eigen-values. (2) Reconstruction of an occluded image is not possible by combining only non-occluded images and the principle components (or the directions) of occlusion variations, but it requires the mean of occlusion variations. (3) The importance and capability of main dictionary and extended dictionary in reconstructing the input face image is not the same, necessarily. (4) KED Runtime is high. To address these problems or challenges, a novel mathematical model is proposed in this paper. In the proposed model, different weights are assigned to the principle components of occlusion variations; different weights are assigned to the main dictionary and extended dictionary; an occluded image is reconstructed by non-occluded images and the principle components of occlusion variations, and also the mean of occlusion variations; and collaborative representation is used instead of sparse representation to enhance the runtime. Experimental results on CAS-PEAL subsets showed that the runtime and accuracy of the proposed model is about 1% better than that of KED.

Abstract The swamp buffalo population in West Sumatra Province decline continuously due to the low female reproductive performance. This research was conducted to identify female buffalo reproductive performance, which could be used as baseline data to enhance its population growth. A survey research method was conducted in two subdistricts, namely Lubuk Basung and Matur, located at different altitudes. Data were collected by interviewing farmers and observing their farms. The parameters observed were age at first mating, age at first calving, calving interval, service per conception, and buffalo farming practices. Significant differences in reproductive performances of female buffalo were observed. Age at first mating 39.04 ± 9.91 and 33.67 ± 5.3 mo., age at first calving 51.61 ± 9.95 and 45.71 ± 5.58 mo., calving interval 27.26 ± 8.84 and 24.17 ± 7.06 mo., and services per conception 1.82 ± 0.82 and 1.55 ± 0.78 were represented buffalo in Lubuk Basung and Matur, respectively. The buffalo reproductive performances in both locations were not optimal; however, Matur’s buffalo reproductive performances were better than those in Lubuk Basung due to its better farming practices and more comfort climatic conditions. Therefore, improving farming practice is essential to enhance buffalo’s reproductive performance and population growth.

In this paper, a new type of Ti3SiC2/Cu composites with the volume fractions of 30% Ti3SiC2 particle was prepared by hot pressing and vacuum sintering respectively. The effects of sintering temperature and holding time on the density, resistance and Vickers hardness of Cu-30vol%Ti3SiC2 composite were investigated. The results show that the mechanical properties of the composites prepared by hot pressing are better than that prepared by vacuum sintering. The relative densities of Cu-30vol% Ti3SiC2 composites are rather high in suitable sintering conditions. It achieved 100% for the composites prepared by hot pressing at 930°C for 2h, and 98.4% for the composites prepared by vacuum sintering at 1250°C for 1h. At the same time, the maximum Vickers hardness reached 1735MPa at 900°C by hot pressing. The resistance and Vickers hardness of the composites decreased with an increase in sintering temperature, whereas the density increased. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to observe the microstructure of the composites. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties was discussed.
