Significance In a bid to quell the protests, President Serzh Sargsyan has announced that the government will subsidise the increase until the completion of an independent audit into the operations of Russian-owned Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA). The 'No To Plunder' campaign, which has played a key role in the protests, is dissatisfied with the concession. The numbers of protestors have fallen sharply in recent days, but the government is becoming increasingly unpopular. Impacts Higher electricity costs will lead to a rise in inflationary pressures for a wide range of goods and services. This will depress domestic demand as businesses and households are already struggling with the dram's sharp depreciation against the dollar. The slowdown in economic growth this year is likely to see public support for the authorities fall further.

Purpose Survey research has developed to become the default empirical approach to answering research questions in the field of hospitality (and many other fields of research within the social sciences). This paper aims to reflect on the use of survey research in hospitality and offers recommendations for improvement. Design/methodology/approach First, known dangers to validity associated with survey research are discussed. Next, a sample of studies recently published in leading hospitality journals is assessed in view of these known dangers. Finally, recommendations are offered for editors, reviewers, readers and authors to mitigate the risk of drawing invalid conclusions based on survey research. Findings Survey research is very common in hospitality research and is used to investigate a wide range of research questions and constructs under study. The nature of constructs studied, the answer scales used and the nature of the samples point to a substantial risk to the validity of conclusions drawn. Practical implications A number of risk mitigation measures are proposed that can help authors minimise the risks to validity arising from known dangers associated with survey research. These same risk mitigation measures can be used by editors and reviewers in the assessment of manuscripts and by readers to evaluate the validity of conclusions drawn in already published work. Originality/value The value of this study lies in reflecting from a distance on how the survey research is conducted in the social sciences in general and in hospitality research in specific. The paper reveals that some routine approaches particularly prone to undermining the validity of conclusions may have been adopted and offers a few suggestions how this risk can be mitigated.

This paper presents a case study, which is currently being carried out on a high-pressure sub-sea gas export pipeline. The main objective of the case study is to determine if the risk mitigation measures that are already in place are sufficient considering the level of risk for different sections of the pipeline. The methodology utilizes a Geographical Information System and the COmputer Assisted Shipping Traffic (COAST) database to determine the level of risk caused by vessels traveling over the pipeline. The factors considered are damaged due to anchor drop and drag, vessel foundering and grounding over the pipeline. Live vessel tracks obtained from nearby radar stations are used to determine the annual traffic volume, size, type and speed of vessels as well as vessel headings. This information is then fed into the COAST database and presented graphically. The pipeline is then divided into equal area cells and the probability of anchor dropping and dragging and vessel foundering and grounding are calculated based on the type, size and speed of the vessels identified to have passed over the pipeline. The results of the frequency of occurrences and fatalities are presented and then evaluated against the set As Low As Reasonable Practicable (ALARP) level. The “hot spots” of the pipeline are identified and a base case study is carried out for the risk reduction measures that are in place (if any) for each of the “hot spots” identified. Alternative risk reduction measures are considered and a cost benefit analysis is carried out to determine the most feasible option. The risk levels are then recalculated with the risk reduction measures in place to see if this has reduced the risk to ALARP. The COAST database is thought to be very useful as it can be updated to reflect the current navigational practices of vessels and hence, it would be easy to update analyses as and when required.

The age of the Italian building heritage has prompted the Government to implement regulatory measures aimed at mitigating the seismic risk, encouraging anti-seismic interventions on residential buildings through specific tax benefits. This work intends to analyze the economic convenience associated with these building transformations from an appraisal perspective, proposing an analysis methodology aimed at evaluating the increase in market value of the transformed properties, and at identifying the most convenient among the various feasible interventions. The application to a case study allows highlighting the net economic benefits in the owners’ portfolios able to compensate the logistical inconveniences associated with this type of intervention, soliciting a greater awareness of seismic risk, and favoring private initiative at a widespread level.
