Blended Learning in First Year Engineering Labs

In 2000, Queen’s Engineering adopted a new model for laboratory instruction to its common first year program. This involved moving from the traditional weekly physics and chemistry labs to a 12 week course on "Experimentation" - in which students learned how to design their own simple physics and chemistry experiments. Offered in a 12 week term, this course, called APSC100 Module 2, began with two shorter "tutorial labs" to introduce the key elements of experimental design then moved through a 6-week lab rotation where students practiced doing well-designed experiments, and finally culminated in a two week "Experimental Design Project". The authors dedicated the summer of 2017 to restructuring this course. Much of the core content was retained, however significant changes were made to pace, method of content delivery, and deliverables. Changes include:  An improvement in student preparation for the lab, through the introduction of on-line pre-lab content and quizzes, to be completed by students the night before their lab.  The elimination of post-lab homework.  A slower pace of introduction of early content – the original "2 tutorial lab" format was expanded to 4 tutorial labs  The introduction of "electronic lab templates". Templates include the lab instructions as well as blank boxes in which to include diagrams, Excel tables and figures, regression analysis, explanatory text and answers to questions.  A new Arduino-based altimeter lab introduces students to large variable data sets. This paper will review the changes to the course, and report on the outcome of these changes following two years of offering the course in the new format.

Objective: to examine the publications in education on-line in nursing through references in major databases from 2005 to 2009. Methods: literature review study conducted in the databases from Virtual Health Library from 2009/19/02 to 2009/24/04. For analysis of the information was held to organize the content found on the year, type of publication and methodological approach, the core content/production of knowledge and recommendations of the authors. Results: in 20 selected references were reviewed and 12 in the database Scielo, 06 in the BDENF and 14 in the Lilacs. It is tonic in the discussions of the authors studied: the development of training courses for nurses and midwives as well as courses in graduate programs via education on-line. Furthermore, it is necessary that the educational institutions and implement health education on-line investments in technological capabilities and infrastructure for teachers and learners. Conclusion: we note an evolution of education on-line in nursing in Brazil in which the possibilities of teaching in virtual environment for learning is everlasting and take into account some constraints relevant to interactivity as the availability of training courses and disciplines in undergraduate courses. From a statistical data bank containing only anonymous records, the records sometimes may be identified and then retrieved, as personal records, by on line dialogue. The risk mainly applies to statistical data sets representing populations, or samples with a high ratio n/N. On the other hand, access controls are unsatisfactory as a general means of protection for statistical data banks, which should be open to large user communities. A threat monitoring scheme is proposed, which will largely block the techniques for retrieval of complete records. If combined with additional measures (e.g., slight modifications of output), it may be expected to render, from a cost-benefit point of view, intrusion attempts by dialogue valueless, if not absolutely impossible. The bona fide user has to pay by some loss of information, but considerable flexibility in evaluation is retained. The proposal of controlled classification included in the scheme may also be useful for off line dialogue systems.

This study was aimed at finding out the effect of using Noting, Interacting, Summarizing, and Prioritizing Strategy on Students’ Achievement in Reading Comprehension. This study was designed with the experimental design. The population of this study was the first year students at academic 2013/2012 of SMA swasta YP St. Paulus Martubung, Medan. There were fourty students taken as the sample of the research. The sample was divided into two groups: the first group (20 students) as the experimental group and the second group (20 students) as the control group. The experimental group was taught by Using Noting, Interacting, Summarizing, and Prioritizing Strategy, while the control group was taught by using conventional method. The instrument for collecting the data was multiple choices which consisted of 40 items. To obtain the reliability of the test, the researcher used Kuder -Richardson (KR-21) formula. The calculation showed that the reliability of the test was 0.75. The data were calculated by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis shows that t-observed (4.98) was higher than t-table (2.025) at the level of significance (α) 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) 38. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It meant that teaching reading comprehension by using Noting, Interacting, Summarizing, and Prioritizing Strategy significantly affects reading comprehension.

A method is presented for determining influent readily biodegradable substrate concentration (SS). The method is based on three different respiration rates, which can be measured with a continuous respiration meter which is operated in a cyclic way. Within the respiration meter nitrification is inhibited through the addition of ATU. Simulations were used to develop the respirometry set-up and decide upon the experimental design. The method was tested as part of a large measurement programme executed at a full-scale plant. The proposed respirometry set-up has been shown to be suitable for a semi-on-line determination of an influent SS which is fully based on the IAWQ #1 vision of the activated sludge process. The YH and the KS play a major role in the principle, and should be measured directly from the process.

A comparative study of several recently proposed one-dimensional sedimentation models has been made. This has been achieved by fitting these models to steady-state and dynamic concentration profiles obtained in a down-scaled secondary decanter. The models were evaluated with several a posteriori model selection criteria. Since the purpose of the modelling task is to do on-line simulations, the calculation time was used as one of the selection criteria. Finally, the practical identifiability of the models for the available data sets was also investigated. It could be concluded that the model of Takács et al. (1991) gave the most reliable results.

This chapter focuses on the role of the dominant player in conservative media, Fox News, during the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency. It looks at three case studies to illustrate how Fox News used its position at the core of the right-wing media ecosystem repeatedly to mount propaganda attacks in support of Trump: the Michael Flynn firing in March 2017, when Fox adopted the “deep state” framing of the entire controversy; the James Comey firing and Robert Mueller appointment in May 2017; when Fox propagated the Seth Rich murder conspiracy; and in October and November, when the arrests of Paul Manafort and guilty plea of Flynn seemed to mark a new level of threat to the president, Fox reframed the Uranium One story as an attack on the integrity of the FBI and Justice Department officials in charge of the investigation.

Abstract Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an active student-centered learning methodology. Several schools (of varying degrees of education) have implemented, in different ways, PBL, having as common strands that the student learns in teams, and being challenged in the context of a case-scenario. In Portugal, a PBL methodology has been implemented, in the first year of an Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) program, for more than 15 years. This represents a total number above 700 students of IEM enrolled in PBL during the reported timeframe. A continuous improvement process of the PBL activities was relentlessly pursued during such period. Grounded on end-of-term on-line PBL process satisfaction questionnaires, as well as on results of each PBL edition final workshops, this paper studies and reports on a number of such achievements and shortcomings. Thus, this paper presents the analysis of the results of ten academic years of PBL evaluation process, grounded on the compiled results obtained from 2009/10 to 2019/20. Also, a synthesis of the effective findings (either positive or negative), systematically pointed out by the students, will be presented. Altogether, the PBL implementation in the IEM program has been very positive for students and teachers and worth for others to follow.

Resumen:El artículo 53 de la Constitución española recoge tres cuestiones básicas: en primer lugar, determina que los derechos y libertades vinculan a todo el poder público; en segundo lugar, determina la protección constitucional y judicial de los derechos y libertades y de los derechos fundamentales; en tercer lugar, reconoce los principios rectores de la política social y económica. En este artículo se analizan estos preceptos y conceptos constitucionales, pero también se estudia su desarrollo legislativo desde 1978 y la realidad práctica hasta el día de hoy. En el artículo también se hace análisis de algunas incoherencias de la jurisprudencia del Tribunal Constitucional en materias fundamentales del artículo 53 de la Constitución española de 1978. Small business furniture manufacturers in the age of digital media are changing the concepts of marketing and sales based on the strategy they recognize the user experiences. This creates a difference between industrial furniture manufacturers and traditional carpentry companies that produce tailor-made furniture. For our research, we examine the core question: “How successfully do small kitchen furniture manufacturers face strong competition in the market through a product personalization approach, considering user experiences and by practicing design management strategy?” With the support of the on-line marketing research, we will research 120 experienced customers, study their marketing need and user experiences of kitchen furniture in the concept of design management strategy.
