The present study aimed to evaluate the activation characteristics of the leaping mullet spermatozoa and diluted with four different media (D1, D2, D3, D4) for 250 h at 4±2°C. The semen was collected from nine wild fish in Homa Lagoon, İzmir, Turkey in July, during reproductive season. In each trial (n = 9), semen samples were collected and mixed to reduce sperm quality variation to obtain the required gametes for the experiment. The semen was activated with natural seawater (salinity of 34, pH 7.9 and 4±2°C) to determine: motility time, motility rate and viability of sperm. Dilution with inactivation media 1:3 increased motility time of diluted semen than control group. At the end of the experiment, no significant difference was found for the duration of survival in the D2 and D4 groups. The highest survival rate was found in D2 group.

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of repeated freeze-thaw cycles and short-term storage of fecal extracts at ambient temperature on the stability of fecal glucocorticoid (fGCM) and estrogen metabolite (fEM) levels from crested macaques.In total 100 aliquots of fecal extracts from fecal samples collected from female crested macaques (Macaca nigra) living at the Tangkoko-Batuangus Nature Reserve, North Sulawesi were used. We performed two different experiments: (1) An experiment to investigate if levels of fGCM and fEM measured from fecal extracts that were exposed to two, four, six and eight repeated freeze-thaw cycles (test groups) differ to control samples (i.e. fecal extracts always stored frozen); (2) An experiment to evaluate whether storing fecal extracts at ambient temperature for two, four, six, and eight days (test groups)affects the levels of fGCM and fEM compared to the control group (i.e. fecal extracts frozen immediately).Results showed that hormone levels were significantly increased (P<0.05) after four freeze-thaw cycles for fGCM and after eight freeze-thaw cycles for fEM. By contrast, there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in levels of fGCM and fEM between the test groups and the control group in fecal extracts stored at ambient temperature. In conclusion, our data show that more than two and six repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided when measuring fGCM and fEM in crested macaque fecal extracts, respectively. We also demonstrate that storing fecal extracts at ambient temperature is possible for at least 8 days without taking a risk of affecting the stability of fGCM and fEM levels.

Background: The choice of suture material for repair of episiotomy or perineal laceration is largely of one’s personal preference. Chromic catgut was widely used in most institutions. It now appears that chromic catgut is associated with more postpartum discomfort and hence chromic catgut has been largely replaced by synthetic absorbable materials like polyglactin and polyglycolic acid.Methods: The study was conducted in Institute of Social Obstetrics and Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital, Chennai. This is a prospective, comparative study involving two groups. The use of a rapidly absorbing form of synthetic absorbable suture material, in the repair of episiotomy or perineal laceration in 100 patients during the study period February 2012 to July 2012, were simultaneously compared with the traditional natural absorbable suture material.Results: With the use of rapidly absorbing polyglactin 910, there was a significant reduction (p=0.000) in the short-term pain, 19 compared to 80 in the control group. With regard to wound dehiscence and the need for resuturing, there was statistically significant difference in the control group (15%) compared to the study group (0%). There was no statistical significance between the two groups in terms of dyspareunia (12.4% vs 10.7%).Conclusions: Fast-absorbing form of Polyglactin seems to be effective in reducing some of the morbidity associated with perineal repair following childbirth. There was significant reduction in the short-term pain and the need for analgesia. The incidence of wound dehiscence was markedly reduced.

Background and Objectives: Music listening has a concomitant effect on structural and functional organization of the brain. It helps in relaxation, mind training and neural strengthening. In relation to it, the present study was aimed to find the effect of Carnatic music listening training (MLT) on speech in noise performance in adults.Subjects and Methods: A total of 28 participants (40-70 years) were recruited in the study. Based on randomized control trial, they were divided into intervention and control group. Intervention group underwent a short-term MLT. Quick Speech-in-Noise in Kannada was used as an outcome measure.Results: Results were analysed using mixed method analysis of variance (ANOVA) and repeated measures ANOVA. There was a significant difference between intervention and control group post MLT. The results of the second continuum revealed no statistically significant difference between post training and follow-up scores in both the groups.Conclusions: In conclusion short-term MLT resulted in betterment of speech in noise performance. MLT can be hence used as a viable tool in formal auditory training for better prognosis.

Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) may differentiate into nerve cells under a certain condition; however, the clinical application for treating nervous system disease remains unclear. The aim is to assess the safety profile, feasibility, and effectiveness of surgery combined with autologous BMSCs transplantation for treating ICH. 206 ICH patients who had received surgical procedure were divided into transplantation (n=110) or control group (n=96). For transplantation group, BMSCs were injected into the perihemorrhage area in the base ganglia through an intracranial drainage tube 5.5 (3.01–6.89) days after surgery, followed by a second injection into the subarachnoid space through lumbar puncture 4 weeks later. Neurologic impairment and daily activities were assessed with National Institute Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Barthel index, and Rankin scale before transplantation and 6 months and 12 months after transplantation. Our results revealed that, compared with control group, NIHSS score and Rankin scale were both significantly decreased but Barthel index was increased in transplantation group after 6 months. Interestingly, no significant difference was observed between 12 months and 6 months. No transplantation-related adverse effects were investigated during follow-up assessments. Our findings suggest that surgery combined with autologous BMSCs transplantation is safe for treatment of ICH, providing short-term therapeutic benefits.

Abstract STUDY QUESTION Do children conceived after ICSI have similar school performance as children born after IVF? SUMMARY ANSWER Children born after ICSI have similar school performance compared to children born after IVF. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Studies concerning the cognitive skills of children born after ICSI have shown diverging results. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION This nationwide, register-based cohort study included all singleton children born after ICSI (n = 6953), IVF (n = 11 713) or spontaneous conception (SC) (n = 2 022 995), in Sweden between 1985 and 2006. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Singleton children born after ICSI were identified in national IVF registers, cross-linked with the Medical Birth Register (MBR), the National Patient Register (NPR) and the Swedish Cause of Death Register (CDR) for characteristics and medical outcomes. Data on school performance, parental education and other parental characteristics were obtained through cross-linking to the National School Registry and to Statistics Sweden. The main control group, which consisted of children born after IVF, was identified in the national IVF registries while the second control group, consisting of children born after SC, was identified from the MBR. Simple and multivariable linear regression was used for analysis of continuous variables, and logistic regression was used for the analysis of binary outcomes. Adjustments were made for sex, year of birth, maternal smoking during pregnancy, parental age, parity, parental region of birth, parental level of education and frozen embryo transfer. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE In the adjusted analyses, there was no significant difference between ICSI and IVF children for total score (adjusted odds ratios (AORs) 1.03; 95% CI −0.22 to 2.28; P = 0.11), specific subjects, qualifying for secondary school (AOR 1.02; 95% CI 0.82–1.26; P = 0.87) or poor school performance (AOR 0.92; 95% CI 0.75−1.14; P = 0.47). In the third grade, children born after ICSI had a significantly lower chance of passing all of the subtests in Mathematics (AOR 0.89; 0.83–0.96; P = 0.002) and Swedish (AOR 0.92; 0.85–0.99; P = 0.02) compared to children born after SC. When cross-linking children with missing data on school performances (2.1% for ICSI, 2.0% for IVF and 2.3% for SC) with the Cerebral Palsy Follow-up Register (CPUP) for cerebral palsy, 2.7% of ICSI children, 5.7% of IVF children and 1.7% of SC children without registered education were found. When cross-linking children with missing data on school performances with the NPR for mental retardation, 29.9% of ICSI children, 32.6% of IVF children and 35.0% of SC children with missing data were registered under such a diagnosis. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION The main limitation was that test scores were missing in a small percentage in both ICSI and IVF children. Although we were able to cross-link this subpopulation with the CPUP and the NPR, these diagnoses only partly explained the missing scores. Other limitations were unmeasured and unknown possible confounders, such as information about infertility diagnoses and indication for ICSI, were not available. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS These findings are important to most countries where IVF and ICSI are used since there may be differences in choice of procedure. In recent years, there has been an increasing trend towards using ICSI not only for treatment of male infertility but also when the sperm quality is normal. Our results indicate that the school performance of children born after ICSI is reassuring. AbstractAlthough ghrelin acts as a modulator of feeding behavior and energy metabolism in the central nervous system, recent studies have implicated the peripheral actions of ghrelin in reproductive tissues. Here, we investigated the effects of chronic administration of ghrelin on the motility, plasma membrane integrity and concentration of rat spermatozoa. 45-d male Wistar rats were scheduled for the study and were divided into control and treatment groups. In the treatment group, 1 nmol of ghrelin was administered as sc injection for 10 consecutive days or vehicle (physiological saline) to the control rats. Sperm collection was achieved by killing of the rats on days 15, 25 and 50 after first injection. Total sperm motility and forward progressive movement did not exhibit significant difference during the experiment, although, there was a tendency for greater motion rate on d 15 and 25 in the treated rats compared to the control group. Plasma membrane integrity (HOS-reacted spermatozoa) was significantly higher in the treated animals, especially on day 15 as well as day 25, because of possible antioxidant properties of ghrelin. This value was statistically higher on day 15 than that of day 25 (P <0.05). Likewise, there was a significant correlation between the FPM (P <0.0001, r = 0.79) and TSM (P <0.01, r = 0.52) with the HOS test percentage in the treatment group. It was not observed statistically difference in the sperm concentration between groups during all of the experimental days. In conclusion, chronic administration of ghrelin (similar to induced by energy deficiency such as fasting) increased the integrity of sperm membrane, however, the sperm motility and concentration did not display any alterations.

Abstract This study investigated weight changes of seven different light-cured composite restorative materials, one polyacid glass ionomer compomer, and one light-cured glass-ionomer cement following short-term and long-term storage in water. Two packable composites, three universal (hybrid) composites, one microglass composite, one polyacid glass ionomer resin composite (compomer), one microhybrid low-viscosity (flowable) composite, and one light cured glass ionomer composite cement were evaluated in this study. The weight changes of these specimens were measured daily (short-term storage), and they were measured after six weeks (long-term storage) using an electronic analytical balance. A significant difference was found in Ionoliner, Dyract AP, Opticor flow, Charisma, and Solitare 2, but no significant difference was found in the others (Filtek Z 250, Filtek P60, TPH Spectrum, and Valux Plus). Weight change showed a tendency to increase with the time of water storage. The greatest weight change occurred in light-cured glass ionomer composite cement (Ionoliner), which is followed in order by the weight changes in Dyract AP, Opticor Flow, Charisma, Solitare 2, Filtek Z250, Filtek P60, TPH Spectrum; Valux Plus had the least amount of change. Investigation of sub-acute levels of zinc oxide nanoparticles on the filtration rate of Mytilaster lineatus and Dressina polymorpha in the short term. Nusantara Bioscience 10: 53-57. The filtration rate is one of the physiological indices in the bivalves which indicate the degree of efficacy of the filtration function in the exposure to contaminants. In this study, changes in the filtration rate of freshwater bivalves (D. polymorpha and M. lineatus) were investigated after exposure periods of 5 and 10 days with nanoparticles. Bivalves were transferred from the natural environment to the laboratory. The distribution of nanoparticles was measured by differential light scattering (DLS). Bivalves were exposed to 2.5, 25 and 50 ppm nanoparticles for ten days in water reservoirs. The filtration rates were significantly different in the treatments compared to the control samples, with the highest filtration rate was observed in the control group. On the fifth day, the highest filtration rate was obtained in the first treatment of M. lineatus and the lowest filtration rate was obtained in the third treatment of D. polymorphia. The highest filtration rates were observed in the first and second treatments and the lowest filtration rate was observed in the third treatment. Also, there was no significant difference in the filtration rate of M. lineatus in the 1st treatment with control (P> 0.05) on the 5th day, but filtration rate was significantly (P <0.05) less than other concentrations and control group in the third treatment. On the other hand, the filtration rates on the 10th day showed similar differences compared to the 5th day. It could be concluded that the changes infiltration rate are an appropriate indicator for the measurement of contamination in nanoparticles.

Abstract Background:Oxidative stress during chilled storage is a major problem withcanine sperm. To improve the quality of chilled canine sperm during storage, many synthetic antioxidants have been examined, but different outcomes were investigated depending on antioxidant properties. The bioactive compounds of essential oils fromOcimum gratissimumleaves are known as a natural antioxidant source. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant effects of essential oils from Ocimum gratissimumleavesas a supplement in extender on chilled canine sperm during 12 days of storage. Results:The results showed thatlow concentrations of Ocimum gratissimum essential oils (25, 50, and 100µg/mL) have beneficial effectson sperm quality, whereasOcimum gratissimumessential oils athigh levels (above 200µg/mL) have harmful effects. Specifically, the addition of 100µg/mL ofOcimum gratissimum essential oilsto the extender had the greatestbeneficial effect in improving the quality of chilled canine sperm, and had a significant difference in all sperm quality parameters except motility when compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusions:Ocimum gratissimum essential oilshave an impact on chilled canine sperm quality in a dose-dependent manner, and the best results areachieved with a maximum dose ofOcimum gratissimum essential oils of 100µg/mL.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of intensity modulated radiation therapy and endocrinotherapy for middle and advanced prostate cancer. Methods: Total 104 elderly patients with middle and advanced prostate cancer who were admitted to our hospital from November 2014 to August 2015 were selected using random number table method. They were divided into intensity-modulated radiotherapy combined with endocrinotherapy group (observation group) and conventional radiotherapy combined with endocrinotherapy group (control group), 52 each. The serum levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA) and free prostate antigen (f PSA) were measured three months after treatment. The short-term efficacy and toxic and side effects of the patients were observed, and the survival rate was recorded through three-year follow up. Results: The clinical effective rate of the observation group was 92.68%, and that of the control group was 70.73%; there was a significant difference between the two groups (P<0.05). The serum PSA and f PSA levels of the two groups were similar before treatment, but there was no significant difference (P>0.05). The serum PSA and f PSA levels after treatment were significantly lower than before treatment. The incidence of adverse reactions in the observation group was lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). The one-year and three-year survival rates of the two groups were significantly different (90.0 vs. 80.0%, 60.0 vs. 43.3%, P>0.05). Conclusion: Intensity modulated radiotherapy combined with endocrinotherapy was safe and well tolerated in the treatment of middle and advanced prostate cancer. It can improve the short-term efficacy and effectively reduce the serum oncological index concentration of patients.
