Fine motor skills are key in preschool education. These skills refer to those that require the movement of little muscles in hands, such as picking up pieces with tweezers or handwriting. Recent evidence has shown that those children with an appropriate fine motor skills development in the early childhood are expected to obtain a better academic achievement during the first years of primary education than those with delays or impairments in their fine motor skills. Thus, this chapter provides with an overview of the literature on this area, based on the most recent reviews, with a special focus on the graphomotor skills (i.e., handwriting) in the association between fine motor skills and academic achievement. Furthermore, the latest proposals aimed to improve fine motor skills and graphomotor skills are reviewed and assessed according to certain aspects which are considered relevant in the literature. Some guidelines for practitioners may be extracted.

Abstract: The background of this study is the low motor skills of early childhood in group A in the Natural Kindergarten Rizkia. This can be seen from the weakness of fine motor in moving the fingers of the hands, coordinate the eyes and hands, and the accuracy of flexibility of the child's fingers. The purpose of this study is to improve fine motor skills through papercraft play activities. The method used in this research is classroom action research method using Kemmis and Taggart cycle model through four stages namely planning, implementation, observation, and reflection which is done by two cycles. The subjects of the study were 16 students of class A. Data collection is done by observation, documentation, and interview. The results of the study conducted during two cycles observed the development of fine motor skills of group A children experienced an increase in each cycle. Pre-action (pre cycling) was 34%, in cycle I was 60.6% with 26.6% increase and in second cycle was 83.82% with an increase of 23.22%. Thus the percentage improvement of fine motor ability of group A children through papercraft activity has achieved success indicator that is more than 75%. This means that papercraft play activities are very effective and can be used in improving the fine motor skills of children group A.

KNOWLEDGE AMONG MOTHERS OF  PRESCHOOL CHILDREN IN MOTOR DEVELOPMENTBackground: Motorskill development is the development of physical movement control through coordinated central nerve and muscle activities. Motor skilldevelopment is divided into two, gross motor skills and fine motor skills. Gross motor skills involve large parts of the body, such as: walking, jumping, running and so on. Smaller groups of muscle movements are called fine motor skills, such as: writing, drawing, wearing scissors, and so on. One factor that influence children's development is mother's knowledge. Mothers who have good knowledge will tend to pay attention and stimulate their children’s development.Purpose: The purpose of this research is to determine the relations of mothers’ knowledge about children’s growth and development with gross and fine motor skills development of children aged 4-5 years old in Pesawaran Lampung Kindergarten in 2018.Methods: The design used in this research is analytic by using a cross sectional approach. The population in this research were all mothers with children aged 4-5 years old at Pesawaran Lampung Kindergarten, with a sample of 58 people, while sampling techniques were taken using the total population method. The analysis of the research uses univariate and bivariate analysis which use the chi-square test. Results: The results of this research are there is no relationship between mothers’ knowledge about children’s development and growth with gross motor skills development (p-value = 0.622) and fine motor skills development (p-value = 0.614) of children aged 4-5 years old at Pesawaran Lampung Kindergarten in 2018.Conclution: There is no relationship between maternal knowledge about the development of children with gross motoric and fine motor development of children 4-5 years in Pesawaran Lampung kindergarten in 2018. It is expected that parents can find sources information about the children’s growth and development, so parents can provide stimulation of children’s motor skills development.Latar Belakang: Menurut WHO (2014), diperkirakan 5-10% anak mengalami keterlambatan perkembangan. Diaharapkan para orang tua dapat mencari sumber informasi tentang tumbuh kembang anak, sehingga orang tua mampu memberikan stimulasi perkembangan motorik anak.
