This study aimed at the investigation of physicochemical characteristics of oils and the morphometric characteristics of fruits and seeds (almonds) of babassu (Orbignya phalerata Martius), by ecological region of the state of Maranhão. For this, samples of babassu were obtained from the following regions: Litoral, Cocais, Baixada, Cerrado and Pre-Amazonia of the state of Maranhão, and analyzed the following physicochemical parameters: acidity index, saponification index, refraction index and humidity using Analytical Standards of the Adolfo Lutz Institute. Fruits were collected from the same regions to analyze the morphometric characteristics by measuring the fruits and almonds of the studied species. The results indicate that the acidity indexes are within the maximum limit established by the ANVISA National Standard and the saponification indexes indicate the presence of medium to high molecular weight lipids. The refractometric results are in line with current standards and the moisture content was less than 1%. The lots of Orbignya phalerata Martius babassu presented a significant variability in size and weight for fruits and almonds by region.

Various samples of groundwater were collected from different areas of Kandarvakottai and Karambakudi of Pudukkottai District, Tamilnadu and analyzed for their physicochemical characteristics. The results of this analysis were compared with the water quality standards of ISI, WHO and CPHEEO. In this analysis the various physicochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, total dissolved solids, Cl-, F-, SO42-, PO43-, NO3-, NO2-, CN-, Nas+, K+, NH3, Mn, Fe, Ca & Mg hardnessetc., were determined using standard procedures. The quality of groundwater samples were discussed with respect to these parameters and thus an attempt were made to ascertain the quality of groundwater used for drinking and cooking purposes in and around Kandarvakottai and Karambakudi areas.

This paper examines how the physicochemical characteristics of the solids are related to foam formation and describes how the foaming potential of full-scale plants can be assessed. The relations among activated sludge and biological foam hydrophobicity, scum index, aeration tank cover and filamentous population are evaluated. Individual parameter comparison reveals the scumming intensity can be estimated only on the assumption that foams is already established. None of the above mentioned characteristics can be reliably used to predict the foaming episodes at wastewater treatment plants.

Water quality assessment was carried out within the 202 km2 Okomu National Park located within the 1,082km2Okomu Forest Reserve between January 2017 and December 2018. Water sampling was carried in ten compartments of approximately 1.6km2 each, covering Ponds, Stream and River, based on easy accessibility. No such study has been carried out for the Okomu Wetlands in the past three decades. Sampling protocols, laboratory analysis and quality control/quality assurance measures followed standard procedures. All physicochemical parameters showed significant (P < 0.001) spatial variations. The maximum and minimum values obtained for physicochemical parameters of the Okomu Wetland are 23.6 and 38.0°C air temperature; 21.0 – 38°C water temperature; 0.15 – 1.02m water level; 16.7 – 150.7mg/l total dissolved Solids (TDS); 0.5 – 18.8mg/l total suspended Solids (TSS); 0.2 – 14.8mg/l turbidity; 40. 0 – 307.4µS/cm electrical conductivity (EC); 4.4 – 6.7 pH; 0.02 – 0.14mg/l salinity; 0.7 – 5.5mg/l dissolve oxygen (DO); 0.5 – 3.8mg/l biochemical oxygen demand (BOD); 1.5 – 120.2mg/l chemical oxygen demand (COD); 23.8 – 593.6mg/l bicarbonates (HCO3); 69.9 – 245.3mg/l Chlorine (Cl); 0.02 – 0.59mg/l nitrite (NO2); 0.11 – 2.34mg/l nitrate (NO3); 0.04 – 2.11mg/l ammonium-nitrogen (NH4N); 0.05 – 2.96mg/l sulphate (SO4); 0.09 – 9.2mg/l phosphorus (P); 0.20 – 2.72mg/l sodium (Na), 0.03 – 1.32mg/l potassium (K); 0.88 – 5.88mg/l calcium (Ca); 0.13 – 3.1mg/l magnesium (Mg); 5.8 – 18.9mg/l iron (Fe); 0.04 – 1.1mg/l manganese (Mn); 0.02 – 0.09mg/l copper (Cu); 0.93 – 6.0mg/l zinc (Zn); 0.01 – 2.9mg/l lead (Pb); 0.01 – 0.18mg/l cadmium (Cd); 0.06 – 4.0mg/l chromium (Cr); 0.01 – 0.15mg/l nickel (Ni); 0.01 – 11mg/l vanadium (V). Air and water temperatures were mostly influenced by forest canopy cover. pH levels indicate that the water bodies within the forested wetland are slightly acidic. Higher DO values were recorded in the Arhakhuan Stream and Okomu River (Agekpukpu and Iron bridge) than in the temporary ponds. BOD levels of greater than 1mg/l were observed which is indicative of slight levels of organic pollution. Higher concentrations of TDS, TSS, turbidity, EC, Colour, HCO3, NH4N, NO2, NO3, P, Na, K, Ca Mg and heavy metals were recorded in the temporary ponds than in the Stream and River. Research on water bodies within wetlands should be carried out routinely in order to monitor changes in the water conditions that could occur overtime whether natural or anthropogenic. This becomes even more pertinent in the light of glaring impacts of climate change and increasing environmental modifications.

The passion fruit or grenadilla is usually consumed in the form of juice and its pleasant intensive aroma and flavor make it an attractive element for the food industry. The objective of the present work is to determine the effects of membrane technologies such as tangential microfiltration and reverse osmosis on the physicochemical characteristics of passion fruit extracts. The characteristics of the various extracts were determined according to conventional methods. In addition, statistical methods were applied to the data collected in order to determine the effects of membrane technologies. The results showed a yield of 89.33% for the extraction of the microfiltered juice and a volume reduction factor of 16.75 for the concentrate. In addition, the microfiltration-concentration process significantly (p <0.05) influenced the physicochemical parameters of the extracts produced. Thus, tangential microfiltration made it possible to clarify the crude extract by changing from a turbidity of 89.23 ± 1.71 to 0.72 ± 0.02 NTU. It has also resulted in a significant decrease in pH and flavonoids contents. Principal component analysis confirmed the existence of differences between the extracts produced despite the various correlations between their characteristics. It revealed that the JB and CMFT extracts are characterized by their high pH and low density. On the other hand, the COI extract is characterized by its brix degree, viscosity, conductivity and high vitamin C content. In addition, reverse osmosis has the advantage of concentrating the compounds of interest of clarified juice with a concentration factor ranging from 2.15 to 9.39.

Groundwater is the most reliable resource for consumptive uses worldwide, but it is vulnerable to anthropogenic pollution in this post-industrialization era. Pollution of the resource may result from anthropogenic activities; hence, analysing the effects of leachate on groundwater is imperative. This study assessed the spatial distribution of physicochemical parameters of groundwater in Roundhill landfill vicinity of South Africa and conducted their hydrogeochemical analysis. Water samples were collected from 3 boreholes in the landfill surroundings and analysed for selected physicochemical characteristics. Spatial distribution of these parameters showed dominant pollution by Mn2+, Fe2+, and [Formula: see text], which surpassed prescribed allowable limits of the country in most of the study area. Possibilities of simple dissolution and ion mixing were deduced from the Durov diagram. Magnesium carbonate, sodium chloride, and mixed faces of groundwater were dominant in boreholes 1 to 3, respectively. The dominance of Ca2+, Cl−, Mg2+, and [Formula: see text] ions in some boreholes suggested anthropogenic pollution. Landfill leachate was associated with groundwater pollution in the study area.

Water samples from twenty water sources (fifteen boreholes and five streams) in Uzuakoli, Nigeria were collected for the period of 6 months covering the dry and rainy seasons to assess the level of contamination. The Microbiological characteristics including heterotrophic counts, coliform counts and physicochemical parameters includes pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, calcium, potassium, nitrate, magnesium and phosphate were evaluated using standard methods. The total Heterotrophic counts for the borehole during the dry and rainy season were 8.3 x 103 cfu/ ml and 10.8 x 104 cfu/ ml. The Heterotrophic counts for the stream were 12.7 x 104 cfu/ ml and 17.8x 106 cfu/ ml. The frequency of occurrence of the isolates are Staphylococcus aureus 63% in borehole and 85% in streams, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 49% in boreholes and 95% in streams, Proteus sp 52% in boreholes and 97% in streams, Streptococcus sp 46% in boreholes and 53% in streams, Enterobacter aerogenes 33% in boreholes and 63% in streams, Escherichia coli 16% in boreholes and 53% in streams and Salmonella sp no percentage in boreholes and 40% in streams. The result shows a significant difference at (P≤0.05) for the bacterial isolates. The physicochemical parameters of the borehole and stream water samples during the dry and rainy seasons were determined. The temperature ranged from 25oC 32oC; pH ranged from 5.3 8.1; turbidity ranged 0.03 3.23; dissolved oxygen ranged from 3.45–7.40mg/l; biochemical oxygen demand ranged from 1.20–4.32mg/l; chemical oxygen demand ranged from 2.50–5.21mg/l; Calcium ranged from 0.81–5.64mg/l; potassium ranged from 1.01–4.22mg/l; Nitrate ranged from 1.49–4.02mg/l; magnesium ranged from 0.13–2.20mg/l; phosphate ranged from 0.51–2.01mg/l. The water samples were all within the WHO limits apart from sample from Iyi Agbozu that had temperature of 32oC.

Present study was undertaken at the marine cage farm of Polem Village, Goa. Water and sediment samples were analysed for evaluation of the physicochemical characteristics and total cultivable heterotrophic bacteria. No significant variation was observed in the physicochemical parameters of water except for inorganic phosphate (p<0.05). Total cultivable bacterial count ranged from 2.06 to 19.27 x 104cfu g-1 and from 1.14 to 8.41 x 104 cfu g-1, while total presumptive vibrio count ranged from 0.15 to 1.57 x 104 g-1 and 0.09 to 0.78 x 10-4 g-1. Results of the present investigation revealed that all the parameters studied were within the optimum range and cage farming with limited number of cages does not have major impacts on the water and sediment quality.

Abstract The coastal areas of Port Blair in Andaman are threatened by severe water pollution due to the human settlements in these regions. The objective of this study was to determine the level of pollution in ten different anthropogenically dynamic coastal regions by assessing the seasonal variations of various physicochemical characteristics. The regions selected for this study were Burmanallah (BA), Carbyn's Cove (CC), Chattam (CH), Flat Bay (FB), HADDO Harbour (HH), Junglighat Bay (JB), Minne Bay (MB), Phoenix Bay (PB), Sisostris Bay (SB) and Wandur (WA) in South Andaman. The study was carried out from January 2018 to December 2018 to investigate seasonal variations in the physicochemical parameters such as pH, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, silicate, phosphate, and chlorophyll-α using multivariate statistical analysis. Statistical analyses suggest that the regions of JB and MB were highly polluted while, BA, CC, FB, and WA were the least polluted. Landuse and land cover analysis of the study area further facilitated and supported the multivariate statistical results.

Abstract Background: Water is essential for life and it been used for various activities such as drinking, bathing, and recreational purposes and also one of the modes of the transmission of the disease.Objective: The objective of this study to assess the presence of bacteriological and physicochemical quality of swimming pools’ water in Lembah Klang, Malaysia.Methodology: Seven water samples collected from outdoor and indoor swimming pools (hotel, apartment, and public swimming pool) in Lembah Klang, Malaysia. Water samples were collected in sterile bottles (30 ml). Physicochemical parameters were determined using water quality testing kit pH & chlorine apparatuses. The water sample was cultured and incubated. The presence of bacteria was counted by the total bacterial count method.Result: The ranges of mean values of the various chlorine level parameters of the selected water samples investigated for the apartment, hotel, and municipal were, 0.56±1.01, 0.77±0.95, and 1.19±0.91. All the physicochemical parameters except conductivity values were within the permissible limits of the World Health Organization (WHO) standards 2006 and American National Standard for Water Quality in Public Pools and Spas (ANSI/APSP) 2015. The mean, standard plate count of water samples from the selected apartment, hotel, and municipal’s swimming pools were, 28407.14±28469.05, 8192.86±10556.36, and 3257.14±6250.17which above the WHO Guideline limit, thus signifying contamination.Conclusion: The study recommends improvement in the personal hygiene of swimmers, adequate cleansing of the pools, and enforcement of standards by the government.

SummaryA total of seventeen olive ecotypes were identified in the oasis region of Degache (Tozeur, Tunisia). The following physicochemical parameters of their oils were studied: acidity, refraction index, polyphenol, chlorophyll and carotene contents, oleic, palmitic and linoleic acid levels and the UV absorbance (K232 and K270). The acidity, K232 and K270 parameter values were used to classify most of the olive oils considered as ‘extra virgin’. The highest carotene, chlorophyll and polyphenol contents of the olive oils examined were found to be 13.60 ppm, 9.10 ppm and 796 ppm, respectively. The oleic acid level of the olive oils considered ranged between 47% and 73%, whereas the palimtic acid level ranged between 11.8% and 23%, and the linoleic acid level ranged between 8.8% and 22.5%. Therefore, the fatty acid composition of the most olive oils considered was in keeping with the IOC norms. The Pearson correlation coefficients obtained were found to be negatively significant for the oleic, palmitic and linoleic acid levels recorded. The cluster and principal component analyses performed revealed the importance of fatty acids and polyphenol contents in the clustering of olive ecotypes. The selection of olive ecotypes according to oil quality is possible, requiring further studies focusing especially on their agronomic characters.
