This article focuses on comparison between Manual/Traditional and Building Information Modelling (BIM) software based approaches for cost comparison. Centre line method for manual and Revit software for BIM based approaches are used in this research. The principal objectives of this research are to calculate quantities by Manual Centre line method, then to make the cost estimation fast, accurate, efficient, and errorless by using BIM software Rivet, and finally the comparison study of manual based and BIM / Software based estimation. For manual approach, quantities are calculated by multiplying the measurements of length, breadth, and height. Then to get the total quantities the deduction is subtracted from the quantities and final BOQ is prepared for which estimated cost of building is calculated. For BIM based approach, 3D model from 2D floor plan of building is prepared in Revit software, then to estimate the cost of building structure elements, sheets of quantities are generated in the schedule option of the view tab in the software. The Percentage difference between Manual and BIM / Revit Software estimation in brick work, RCC Slab, Plaster Work, PCC for Flooring, Floor Tile Work, Skirting, Paint Work, False Ceiling, Doors and Aluminum Work is 4.57, 2.61, 7.58, 3.27, 1.87, 6.73, 8.03, 1.87, and 0.00% respectively. The total cost difference between manual and BIM based estimation approach comes out to be 4.8%. It is thus concluded that the BIM-assisted estimates have better performance over traditional/manual estimating methods.

<p>Development of The Syamsudin Noor Airport Project in Banjarmasin is one of the largest projects in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. This project applied BIM-based cost estimation on a steel roof structure. However, the cost estimation for this steel roof structure is applied conventionally. The BIM-based cost estimation could have been applied in collaborating a building information becomes unity in one model. This research will raise the issue of applying BIM-based cost estimation at The Syamsudin Noor Airport Project to find out the effectiveness calculation of cost estimation conventionally and BIM-based cost estimation. The report result by 3D modeling of Tekla is quantity take-offs using as a data for processing the cost analysis conventionally. Whereas the 3D model made by Tekla will be exported to Revit through the interoperability of IFC or application of extention of Tekla warehouse that is “Export to Revit Geometry” for the processing the BIM-based cost estimation analysis. The unit price for the cost calculation is acquired by list price (AHSP or subcontractor value). The result of these both cost calculation, there are large enough difference in cost of these both calculations. Difference of conventional calculations and BIM-based cost estimation using Revit worth Rp 3,690,741,474 - Rp 5,047,206,780 with a percentage of 14% - 20%. Cause of these large enough differences in cost due to the model exported is only 90% succeeded. It happened due to difference thing in the mapping of object profile and difference in shape BREP geometry conditions.</p>

The completion of the design drawing has not been credited in the construction market in Korea, and the modeling information of the design phase cannot be effectively used in an estimation process. Therefore, the objective of this study is to assess the cost estimating accuracy of a BIM tool in the design process to verify its applicability. Modeling was done for a building in an actual project to evaluate the applicability, from which the causes of errors of quantity take-off were derived.

The cost estimation of public sector projects in Brazil must observe the prevailing legislative framework to reduce the likelihood of under-and-over pricing of construction works and potential corruption. Therefore, initial estimates for projects must be prepared using the National System of Costs and Civil Construction Indices (SINAPI). This is a labor-intensive process, and the result estimates produced may be inaccurate. Therefore, it becomes difficult to determine if the under-or-over pricing of works has arisen during the tendering process. The problem is approached with new guidelines for improving the accuracy of estimates that utilizes SINAPI methodology with Building Information Modelling cost estimation. The research method used was Design Science Research (DSR) developing: problem diagnosis, solution proposition, implementation, and evaluation of contributions. The proposed guidelines were tested in two projects: a multi-family residential building and a Reference Center for Social Assistance (CRAS) using a BIM authoring platform. It has been demonstrated that text parameters can be used to identify material specifications, the geometry of elements, and specify substrates, improving the process to generate an estimate following ‘SINAPI factors’ tree’ elemental costs. The guidelines comply with prevailing Brazilian legislation and can improve the process and accuracy of the pre-tender estimate.

Locally load-optimized fiber-based composites, the so-called tailored textiles (TT), offer the potential to reduce weight and cost compared to conventional fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP). However, the design of TT has a higher complexity compared to FRP. Current approaches, focusing on solving this complexity for multiple objectives (cost, weight, stiffness), require great effort and calculation time, which makes them unsuitable for serial applications. Therefore, in this paper, an approach for the efficient creation of simplified TT concept designs is presented. By combining simplified models for structural design and cost estimation, the most promising concepts, regarding the cost, weight, and stiffness of TT parts, can be identified. By performing a parameter study, the cost, weight, and stiffness optima of a sample part compared to a conventional FRP component can be determined. The cost and weight were reduced by 30% for the same stiffness. Applying this approach at an early stage of product development reduces the initial complexity of the subsequent detailed engineering design, e.g., by applying methods from the state of the art.

Blockchain is a novel distributed ledger technology. Through its features and smart contract capabilities, a wide range of application areas opened up for blockchain-based innovation [5]. In order to analyse how concrete blockchain systems as well as blockchain applications are used, data must be extracted from these systems. Due to various complexities inherent in blockchain, the question how to interpret such data is non-trivial. Such interpretation should often be shared among parties, e.g., if they collaborate via a blockchain. To this end, we devised an approach codify the interpretation of blockchain data, to extract data from blockchains accordingly, and to output it in suitable formats [1, 2]. This work will be the main topic of the keynote. In addition, application developers and users of blockchain applications may want to estimate the cost of using or operating a blockchain application. In the keynote, I will also discuss our cost estimation method [3, 4]. This method was designed for the Ethereum blockchain platform, where cost also relates to transaction complexity, and therefore also to system throughput.

Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) sizing and cost estimation has become a challenging task at the early stages of offshore field development. During the early stages of field development designer needs to size and estimate cost in order to decide feasibility of the project. This paper describes a step by step method used to size and estimate the cost of a new built (or) converted FPSO based on basic engineering, existing FPSO data and corresponding metocean criteria for a particular location. This step by step approach covers FPSO sizing, hull structural design, mooring sizing, topsides support design and steel renewal using offshore classification rules and regulations. FPSO cost is estimated based on the design particulars (i.e. hull weights, FPSO particulars, mooring sizes etc.) and current market unit rates. This approach is an effective means to size and estimate cost of an FPSO at early stages of field development which saves overall time and cost for a client.

Cost estimation of software projects is risky task in project management field. It is a process of predicting the cost and effort required to develop a software applications. Several cost estimation models have been proposed over the last thirty to forty years. Many software companies track and analyse the current project by measuring the planed cost and estimate the accuracy. If the estimation is not proper then it leads to the failure of the project. One of the challenging tasks in project management is how to evaluate the different cost estimation and selecting the proper model for the current project. This paper summarizes the different cost estimation model and its techniques. It also provides the proper model selection for the different types of the projects.

Bridge Information Modeling (BrIM) is considered an innovation in bridge engineering and construction industry. This paper presents a methodology for using BrIM as an assisting tool in performing detailed cost estimates. The methodology depends on integrating visualization feature of BrIM with specific attributes of the BrIM model intelligent components. A program developed using C# language is used to extract the visualization conclusions and other components’ attributes to MS Excel spreadsheet. This sheet assists in performing detailed cost estimate, and reviewing the estimate. The paper also presents a methodology for generating cash flow and required payments. This methodology depends on integrating the developed program with 4D feature of BrIM.

This paper presents a review of research in the area of life cycle costing and offers a critique of current commercial cost estimation systems. The focus of the review is on relevant academic research on life cycle cost from 2000 onwards. In addition to this a comparison of the current cost estimation systems is presented. Using the review findings and industrial investigations as a base, a set of mathematical representations for design and manufacturing costs and the introduction of the critical factors is proposed. These are considered in terms of the operational, maintenance and disposal costs to create a method for ascertaining the life cycle cost estimate for complex products. This is presented using as an exemplar, research currently being undertaken in the area of low volume and long life electronic products in the UK defence sector. The benefit of the method proposed is that it aims to avoid the inflexibility of traditional approaches which usually require historical and legacy data to support the cost estimation processes.
