Cigarette residue toxins can accumulate in the body, including the pancreas, which potentially reduces pancreas function. In addition, the active compounds in cigarettes are reporting to interfere with an elevation of reactive oxygen species, leading to disruption of pancreatic microstructures. Furthermore, pancreatic cell dysfunction is responsible for developing diabetes mellitus disease. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of thirdhand smoke exposure on mice pancreatic microstructure image. It was an in vivo laboratory experimental study with a completely randomized design at the Medical Biology Laboratory of the Universitas Islam Bandung from November 2020–June 2021. The subjects were 20 adult male mice aged 8–10 weeks, weighing 25–30 grams, in good health condition, and randomly divided into two groups (control group and treatment group exposed to thirdhand cigarette smoke for four weeks). After the completion of the exposure period, pancreatic cells isolation was performing. The parameters observed in this study were the number and diameter islet of Langerhans. Data analysis used the independent t test parametric (α=5%). The results showed that the number and diameter islet of Langerhans in the treated group were significantly lower than the control group (p<0.05). The average number in the control group was 9.40±3.20, while in the treatment group was 4.90±2.74 (28% smaller). The average diameter of control was 225.96±50.15 mm, while treatment was 162±49.68 mm (50% lower). In conclusion, thirdhand smoke exposure alters the pancreas microstructure. The toxic compounds on thirdhand cigarette smoke are involving in generating an elevation of free radical levels, depletion of antioxidants, and alteration of signal transduction resulted in acceleration of apoptosis rate of the islet of Langerhans, especially pancreatic β-cells.

ABSTRACT Toilet training is an effort to train children to be able to control and urinate (BAK) and defecate (BAB). Toilet training is one of the main tasks of children at toddler age. Toilet training is one of the main tasks of children in toddler age which is very important to be done to create independence in children in controlling BAK and BAB and children know the parts of the body and their functions. Data in 2012 shows that ± 60% of parents do not teach toilet training to children from an early age. The aim of the study was to find out the effectiveness of toilet training education on maternal behavior and toilet skills in toddler age training (18-36 months). The study was conducted in July-August 2018. This type of quantitative research used the design of the Quasy pretest and posttest experiment with non-equivalent control group design. Samples were 36 mothers and 36 children with purposive sampling technique. Data analysis used Paired t test, Wilcoxon test, Man-Whitney test an Independent t test. The results showed that toilet training education through lecture methods, modules and maze games was more effective than toilet training education through lecture and leaflet methods on children's knowledge and abilities. Conversely, for the role of mothers in supervision there is no significant difference in effectiveness. Health education is recommended in health promotion programs to increase maternal knowledge, the role of mothers and the ability of toilet training children independently. This study was initiated on 24 prepubertal Holstein x Kankrej crossbred heifers of nearly identical age (7-9 months) and body weight (130-140 kg) at University farm to evaluate the effect of high plane of nutrition on blood biochemical and minerals profile and the age at puberty. Twelve heifers were managed under routine farm feeding (control) and the rest 12 under ideal optimum feeding regime (treatment) that included extra 1 kg concentrate, 30 g min mix and ad-lib dry fodder. The body weight and ovarian ultrasonography together with blood sampling was carried out at monthly interval from 10 to 18 months of age to study the ovarian dynamics and blood biochemical changes. High plane of nutrition to growing heifers was beneficial in reducing the age of onset of puberty (by 2-3 months) compared to routine farm fed group. The mean plasma total protein and cholesterol concentrations showed a rising trend with significant variations from 10 to 16 months of age, where it got mostly stabilized indicating adult profile. The activity of enzymes GOT and GPT also rose gradually and significantly from 10 months till 14-15 months of age, and thereafter it remained more or less static till 18 months of age. The levels of both these enzymes were higher, with lower protein and cholesterol, in control than the treatment group from 15-16 months of age onwards. The mean plasma levels of both calcium and phosphorus increased gradually and significantly with advancing age till 16-17 months of age, with little higher values in supplemented than a control group. The plasma levels of zinc, iron, copper, and cobalt also showed rising trend with significant differences between 10th and 12th-14th months of age, and from 15th to 18th months of age the levels were statistically the same in all the groups with slightly higher values in the treatment group.

<b><i>Objective:</i></b> Cigarette smoking is a life-threatening habit that has rapidly spread in every socioeconomic part of the public worldwide. There exist mechanisms of nicotine delivery available to use in the hope of halting cigarette smoking, and the electronic cigarette (EC) is one of the common methods used for tobacco smoking replacement. This study aimed to investigate experimentally the oxidative effects of tobacco smoke and EC smoke which contain nicotine. <b><i>Method:</i></b> We constructed smoke circuit rooms for exposing the rats to EC or tobacco smoke. Three groups were created, the control group (<i>N</i> = 8); the electronic cigarette group (<i>N</i> = 8), exposure to electronic cigarette smoke for 2 h per day; and the tobacco group (<i>N</i> = 8), exposure to traditional cigarette smoke for 2 h per day. After the first and second week of exposure, blood samples were obtained, and serum oxidative stress index (OSI), paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity, and prolidase levels were evaluated. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Higher values of OSI and prolidase levels were detected in the first week of EC or tobacco smoke exposure in both study groups (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001) when compared with the control group, and partial decrements were observed in the second week. By contrast, elevated PON1 levels were observed in the second week after EC or tobacco smoke exposure. The highest OSI levels were observed in the tobacco smoke group (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001). The lowest values of PON1 levels were detected in the first week of the electronic cigarette smoke group, and this decremental value was statistically different than normal, the second week of the electronic cigarette smoke group, the first week of the traditional cigarette smoke exposure group, and the second week of the traditional cigarette smoke exposure group values (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.000). <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> Our results indicate that EC smoke induced oxidative stress. Therefore, ECs are potentially risky for human health and can lead to important health problems.
