The current population of elderly Indonesians who have reached 9.6% of the total population is the concern of all stakeholders including the government and academics in tertiary institutions. UKI domiciled in East Jakarta is one of five tertiary institutions appointed directly by the provincial government of DKI Jakarta through the Office of the Empowerment of Child Protection and Population Control (Dinas PPAPP) of DKI Jakarta Province to carry out Thematic Community Service Program activities, which is conducted by UKI in the form of community service activities with the type of mentoring management and fostering the Elderly Family Development (BKL) group. The purpose of this community service activity is to revive BKL groups that have already been formed, but there is no suspended activity. In collaboration with East Jakarta PPAPP Sub-dept., The UKI Team was directed to provide assistance and guidance to the BKL group in RW 05, Cililitan Village. Based on the data obtained, there are about one hundred elderly people who become permanent BKL members in RW 05, Cililitan Sub-District, which at the beginning were formed having a legal management structure and various programs. However, recently with the change of management, activities have been reduced, even the management structure has not yet received approval from the Kelurahan. This is caused by several factors, including the unavailability of enough time for the latest management to coordinate. Through the mentoring and coaching activities carried out by the UKI team in collaboration with the PPAPP service, several results were obtained, including the increasing knowledge of cadres about humanity obtained from sharing and discussion activities, the formation of the management of the BKL group which was endorsed by the Kelurahan of Cililitan and the planned group program BKL  Keywords: Elderly Family Development, Community Service, Continuation

This paper explores the contribution of anthropological perspectives for clarifying the mechanisms through which socioeconomic circumstances influence the strategies developed by elderly for addressing their health problems in a small Brazilian city. Interviews with 20 key-informants explored the community's broad perception of the health situation of the elderly. Life histories collected from 30 elderly women examined their own perception of their health status and their health strategies. Narratives converge in emphasising the important role played by financial factors in accessing health services and medication. Life histories also describe some damaging strategies resorted to by the elderly to deal with their lack of resources. Elderly women emphasize the crucial support they receive from their family and/or neighbours to overcome health problems. Thus, the issue of poverty is not only a matter of socioeconomic circumstances, but also the poverty of broader social networks.

The elderly population has a rapid development. The elderly is often labeled as unproductive, even as a burden on the family. Simple but effective skills activities can be an alternative solution. One of them is by making fermented single onion-based functional food products. This community service aims to extend the productive activities of the elderly population. Fermented garlic products can be consumed alone to improve health. In addition, products can be sold so that they can become additional income for the family. There were three methods, namely counseling, training and mentoring. Counseling related to the health of the elderly, training in making fermented single garlic directly to the target and assisting in implementing the flow of fermented garlic making until the product is successful. The community service program was carried out in the Elderly Group of Mulyosari Village, Surabaya with 50 participants. Counseling and training were carried out with visual power point materials, demonstrations on how to process fermented garlic, and direct practice with mentoring for 10 days until the product was finished. Conclusion: Community service in the form of counseling has an impact on increasing the knowledge of the elderly in Mulyosari Village. Training and assistance in making fermented garlic can also be practiced independently by the elderly as proven by the success of the finished product. This activity can increase the productivity of the elderly, benefit health by consuming it, and become a business opportunity. abstrakPenduduk lanjut usia memiliki jumlah perkembangan yang cukup pesat. Background: COVID-19 not only threatened the public's physical health but also brought unbearable psychological pressure, especially for those vulnerable groups like the elderly. However, studies on the psychological status of older adults during this public health emergency remained scant. This study aims to investigate the mental health status among the elderly Chinese population during COVID-19 pandemic and determine the influencing factors of psychological symptoms. Methods: From February 19 to March 19, 2020, an online survey was administered to Chinese older adults using a convenience sampling method. Information on demographic data, health status and other epidemic related factors were collected. Specifically, the study defined the psychological status as five primary disorder–depression, neurasthenia, fear, anxiety, and hypochondria–which were assessed by the Psychological Questionnaire for Emergent Event of Public Health (PQEEPH). Standard descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to analyze the data. Results: Of 1,501 participants recruited from 31 provinces in China, 1,278 were valid for further analysis. Participants' scores on each sub-scale were described in median and interquartile [M(Q)]: depression [0.00 (0.33)], neurasthenia [0.00 (0.40)], fear [1.00 (0.83)], anxiety [0.00 (0.17)], hypochondria [0.00 (0.50)]. Chronic diseases (depression p = 0.001; neurasthenia p < 0.001; fear p = 0.023; anxiety p < 0.001; hypochondria p = 0.001) and the BMI index (depression p = 0.015; neurasthenia p = 0.046; fear p = 0.016; anxiety p = 0.015; hypochondria p = 0.013) had significant impacts on all of the five sub-scales. Specifically, the rural dwellers had a higher level of neurasthenia, fear, and hypochondria. Besides, education level (p = 0.035) and outbreak risk level (p = 0.004) had significant impacts on the depression. Higher household monthly income per capita (p = 0.031), and the community-level entry/exit control (p = 0.011) are factors against anxiety. Conclusions: Most elderly residents reported mild negative emotions during COVID-19 and more attention should be paid to the recognition and alleviation of fear. Our findings also identified factors associated with the mental health status of the elderly, which is of practical significance in the design and implementation of psychological interventions for this vulnerable population during COVID-19 and future emerging diseases.

BACKGROUND: Oral health care management among the elderly differs from the rest of the population, due to some specific physiological changes and general health status related to age. We know very little about the oral health in elderly in the Republic of Macedonia, because there are only a few articles published about dental health status and edentulism of this population.AIM: The study aimed to evaluate the prosthodontic status of older adults over 65 years in the Republic of Macedonia, about their socio-economic status and individual factors.MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 8 regions, in rural and urban areas of Macedonia and a representative sample of 432 people (age > 65 years) was examined. Statistical analyses of the data were made by chi-square tests and the corresponding C-coefficient.RESULTS: Only 6% of all participants had not any prosthetic appliance, 9.5% had more than one bridge, 28.7% of examinees had partial dentures, both bridge(s) and partial denture(s) had 10.7% participants, and 45.1% of examinees were toothless. There was a significant difference between patients who visited the dentist more than once a year and those who did not (c2 = 14.2; df = 4, p < 0.01). From all of the participants, 40.3% used public dental care organisations.CONCLUSIONS: We found a high prevalence of edentulousness among older adults over 65 years in Macedonia. The study confirmed the necessity for establishing healthcare educational programs for the dental treatment of elderly in Macedonia.
