This paper aims to explore the understanding of the Muslim community of West Sumatra about the determination of the beginning of the month of Ramadan and its implications for implementing the first day of fasting. The people of West Sumatra are always talked about when determining the first day of Ramadan because they are divided into several groups. As a result, they differ in the implementation of the first day of fasting, the implementation of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. This type of research is field research. Data obtained through in-depth interviews with people who can provide important information about the determination of the beginning of this month, including the leader of Naqsabandiyah, Satariyah, person in charge of hisab Muhammadiyah, ru'yah NU, astronomy experts, as well as several congregations from each group. The results showed that determining the start of the month is a very old problem but always becomes new every time Ramadan comes. The problem of determining the initial crescent moon in Indonesia in general and West Sumatra in particular is basically the same but the practice depends on the different ways of understanding the context of the initial crescent of the month. In fact, these differences are very difficult to reconcile because each element remains steadfast in maintaining its sectoral ego.

Da’wa communication skills are needed in preaching to the converts community because the conditions of converts are different from those of Muslims in general. The success of this da’wa can be achieved if converts as the target of preaching carry out the da’wa message conveyed by the preacher. The research objective was to map the preachers' da’wa communication skills to the converts in Karomba, Pinrang district. This study used a qualitative approach and case study methods, so the primary data were in-depth interviews and observations. In addition, this study uses inductive data analysis. The study results indicate that the preachers apply three da’wa communication skills to the converted Muslim community to support da’wa's success. First, the skills to produce messages, especially messages of faith and morals. Second, the skills to receive and convey messages, mainly using local languages. Third, the skills to interact with the converts community through sharia consultation activities. This research is necessary because the findings of this study can serve as a guide for preachers to increase preaching success, especially preaching to converts.

The Islamic world and the significance of careers to Muslim expatriate academics have a correlation with the individual’s living beliefs to contribute to society and the religion itself. As a country that recognises Islam as the official religion, Malaysia has its own uniqueness when it places emphasis by offering study programmes based on the concept of Islam according to Quran and Sunnah. The element of reviving the concept of Islamic learning succeeded in attracting a community of Muslim expatriate academics to come and work in Malaysia. Therefore, this study is designed to identify the motives considered by Muslim expatriate groups when choosing a career destination in Malaysian Public Universities. A qualitative approach that utilises in-depth interviews was conducted on 30 Muslim expatriates working in four selected public universities in the country. By applying thematic analysis, the results of the study found that the three main motives that catalyses the arrival of Muslim expatriate academics to Malaysian Public Universities are 1) The principle of life based on Islam as a religion of faith; 2) The tendency of the family is in the life of the majority of the Muslim community and 3) Career in the context of the privilege of offering the concept of Islamic studies programmes in Malaysian Public Universities. The findings of this study are useful for formulating an internationalisation policy with a religious background as a principle of career development. The direction of this study can be extended to focus on university governance and policy based on Islamic higher education. The interconnectedness of the majority Malaysians who are Muslim justifies the country’s public universities to plan strategically and be competitive in ensuring Islamic studies as one of the components enshrined in the national higher education agenda.

Every living thing dies. The death of a person leaves an obligation for the living to perform some rituals for the deceased. The rituals have been regulated in such a way according to Islamic Sharia (law). Nevertheless, the practices could not be separated from the local traditions and customs. Their influences can be seen through various symbols used in the rituals for the deceased, as found in Sumpur Kudus, West Sumatra. The community has been using many symbols in carrying out the various rituals for the dead, such as kain unduang-unduang (a kind of white cloth stretched above the grave), parian (a bamboo tree that is used as a water container), payuang panji (an umbrella protecting the dead body along the way to the grave) and daun sicerek (a plant used for fragrance). The people stated that, in general, these symbols contain a deep affection of the living towards the deceased. The type of the study was field research with a qualitative approach. The data was gathered by observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation study. The analysis was done descriptively by data reduction, display, and verification (drawing conclusion). The result showed that the Sumpur Kudus community is a Muslim community that does not ignore Islamic law in the organization of their deceased. These symbols serve as tools to show affection of the living towards the deceased. The symbols do not only serve as symbols of affection, but they are also laden with the belief that contain transcendental values.
