The theory of the comparative method has been discussed in a previous article. I pass on to the results obtained—the actual history of prose-rhythm in the practice of particular authors. I give below the figures of normal frequency on which my statements are based. For Greek prose, as I have already said, Thucydides may be considered a practically unmetrical author, since nearly all his clausulae occur with about the same frequency as might be expected from the natural proportion of long and short syllables in the Greek language, and since there is little difference between his sentence-metre and his clausula-metre. (A slight difference between the two is natural, because there are some words, such as the article, which can scarcely be used to close a sentence.) Thus the theoretical frequency of — ∪ — is 14·19 per cent.; its frequency in Thucydides' clausula-metre is 14·2, in his sentence-metre 14·4. But there are two cases where the difference in these proportions seems too great to be due altogether to chance. Compared with the theoretical calculation and with the sentence-metre, —∪∪—— occurs in the clausula considerably more frequently (6·1 per cent, as against 2·6 per cent.) and —∪—∪ considerably less (3·7 per cent, as against 5·1 per cent.). The first form seems to be sought by Thucydides; the second seems to be avoided (doubtless as suggesting an iambic trimeter ending). For these two forms, therefore, I have considered as normal the average percentages of 2,000 cases in the sentence-metre of Thucydides and Xenophon (1,000 each), for the rest the percentages of 2,000 cases in the clausula-metre of Thucydides. For normal frequency in Latin metrical prose I have used de Groot's figures, based on 2,000 cases from nineteenth-century Latin translations of Gregory and Athanasius.

The subject of the study is a phenomenon of an “entropy” of property, its interpretation, socio-economic conditionality, genesis of its development in European and Russian doctrine, reflection of a construct of “separated” property in the legislation. “Entropy” of property is a situation when both entities are owners, but in different areas of relations: the first person is the owner in relation to third parties, and the second-in relation to the first The goal of this scientific research is to find out reasons of the existence of phenomenon of “entropy of property” in European and Russian legal doctrines, to identify common and specific features of this phenomenon. Methodology. The authors use the general scientific method, including dialectics, comparative analysis, formal logic, historical method. A number of specific methods pertaining to the legal science were used as well: the formal dogmatic method was applied for analysis of ownership within the institute of property rights; the logical legal method was applied to study general tendencies of development of the institute of property rights; the legal comparative method was used to study European and Russian legislation on ownership and other property rights. The main scientific results. The Western legal doctrine of “entropy of property” has quite a long history of development, unlike the Russian. Specific features of the Russian doctrine are result of its historical, political and cultural characteristics. The phenomenon of “entropy of property” has both positive and negative consequences, which requires pluralistic approach to its assessment. “Reunification” of ownership rights on the land plot and other objects located on it, is a result of socio-economic and legal factors and deserves positive assessment. Property rights as elements of titular possession are not based only on law, but may be created by contract as well. Conclusions. The European and Russian legal doctrines on the “entropy of property” have both common and specific features. The common features are: existence of “absolute” ownership, limited property rights, trends of reunification of “separated” property etc. The specific features are: absence of “trust” in the Russian legal system; excessive fragmentation of right of ownership as a large “bundle” of rights; absence of situations when one person may simultaneously hold statuses of owner and holder of a limited property right in the Russian legislation.

The relevance of the research shows solutions journalism as a necessary tool for providing information to the audience that emphasizes problem solving rather than the problems themselves, enhancing the relevance of the text, clarifying its purpose, and encouraging readers to take action. The main objective of the article is to investigate the peculiarities of solutions journalism as a modern phenomenon in journalism and to analyze the importance to implement social responsibility in media structures in order to provide solutions to existing problems, not just describe them. The methodology of the article includes: approaches to the definition of the concepts of «solutions journalism» have been explored through analysis and synthesis; using the systematic method, the criteria for defining «solutions journalism» and its difference from similar terms are formed; the comparative method to analyse the audience involvement in solving social problems before and after the emergence of «solutions journalism» was carried out; content analysis made it possible to examine the use of the terms «problem» and «solution» by society in the Internet; SWOT analysis explores peculiarities of solutions journalism; the cognitive mapping method identifies cause-and-effect relations to the importance of creating social projects by media structures. Research findings show that experts in solutions journalism explain that this approach complements the traditional role of the press, giving a fuller perspective on issues for society. Moreover, under the initiative of Sparknews, an international network of positive-impact solutions journalism, a day dedicated to solutions journalism – Impact Journalism Day – was launched. Moreover, media not only transform their texts into solutions journalism, but also create projects that help solving current problems, including the BBC's «100 Women» Project, CNN's #MyFreedomDay Project, the NY Times's «1619 Project», as well as the social project «People of Ideas +. #ForgetAboutAge» by the 1+1 Media Group. As a conclusion, we can say that in the modern world a rethinking of the role of the media is needed. Journalism cannot continue to cover only problems, and to suppress the readers by illuminating the challenges facing humanity. It is important to promote «value-added journalism», which we call as «solutions journalism» in the article.

Why did E. A. Freeman’s The Methods of Historical Study (1886) meet with mostly negative responses from late 19th-century American and Continental European historians? This essay argues that while Freeman adopted the language of ‘historical methods’ that was becoming customary in the 1880s, he did not understand the term to refer to techniques of source criticism, as many of his contemporaries did, but to a comparative method firmly rooted in Thomas Arnold’s unity of history doctrine. Confusingly, then, Freeman’s method promoted a philosophy of history of the kind that, by the 1880s, was increasingly rejected in the name of historical method. It is not without irony, therefore, that The Methods of Historical Study was sometimes mistaken for a methodology manual like Ernst Bernheim’s Lehrbuch der historischen Methode (1889) and as such found wanting by historians interested in the newest techniques of source criticism.

ABSTRACTWe examined the effect of general statements against sexist usage in the style manual for The Washington Post. We selected a minor usage pattern that was not the subject of an explicit rule, namely, the difference in the use of a middle initial in references to men and to women. This usage was taken as an index of the possible effect of a general policy statement on newswriting practice. We found significantly less difference by sex in this usage subsequent to the publication of the style manual. We take the difference as support for the effectiveness of language planning in this instance, although the significance of our results as evidence of real equality of treatment remains somewhat problematic. There are different points of view in sociolinguistics about the relative value of quantitative versus more directly interpretive methods. We present in some detail the reasoning behind the use of quantitative methods to support an investigation such as ours. (Language planning, language treatment, language and sex, language and the media, style and usage, forms of reference, statistical methods)

Media archeology offers a new and necessary tool in dealing with the plurality of phenomena we so indiscriminately - anachronistically or in other ways - recognize as art and classify as artworks. The paper tries to stress the difference in comparison with related viewpoints: the theories of cultural transmission, of the materiality of culture, of the logic of aesthetic regimes etc. One might call it "media before media" (and follow Kittler) or delve with Zielinski into the "Deep Time of the Media" with a good connection to the "history of the senses approach" or go straight with Jussi Parikka and Erkki Huhtamo and use "media archeology": it is always an acknowledgment of the protean nature of art and architecture.

The article shows the specific nature of the formation of the media image of Tomasz Padura, a Polish-Ukrainian poet and composer, a representative of the Polish romantic Ukrainophile movement of the early 19th century. This paper also studies transformation of this image into a symbol of the Polish-Ukrainian unity. Being an apologist of the idea of rapprochement of the Polish and Ukrainian nations, Tomasz Padura blends harmoniously with the modern political and cultural contexts. His Ukrainophile image is сultivated in different social institutions and acquires new meanings which created the necessity for this research paper. The empirical basis for the analysis comprises 24 publications in the Ukrainian Internet editions during the period from 2016 to 2019. The main method of interpreting Padura’s image was the content analysis of publications directly or circumstantially related to the poet. This allowed ascertaining content focuses and tonality of the provided information. The comparative method contributed to the explication of the main tendencies of the conversion of the image to the symbol. As a result, the headlines and the content of the materials have been proven to show a consistent strategy of stressing the positive aspect of the history of the Polish-Ukrainian relations, in particular the Ukrainophile tendencies among the Polish nobility, achievements of the Ukrainian school in the Polish literature, and Tomasz Padura’s relations with this school. The focus of the Ukrainian Internet editions is on the most substantial and striking facts of life and creative work of the poet. Those facts belong to the following informational aspects: narrow biographical, selfless ideological, creative, memorial, and futuristic. Each of those aspects has its content aimed at the melioration of Tomasz Padura’s image as a Polish Ukrainophile. The process of symbolization of this image performs several social functions: the historical-typological one allowing to trace the main stages of the image transformation; the methodological one which stresses its significance for the contemporaries; the communicative one which ensures the continuous attention to the poet, and the marketing function promoting Tomasz Padura’s name as a brand from the point of view of the commercial success.

Key words: Tomasz Padura, Polish-Ukrainian poet, media image, symbol, Ukrainophilia, mass media.
