BackgroundIt has been suggested that screening interventions may be effective for suicide prevention. Few studies, however, have reported their effects on outcome measures, including death by suicide among middle-aged adults.MethodWe used a quasi-experimental parallel cluster design with matched community-based intervention and control municipalities (total eligible population: 90 000) in Japan. At-risk residents within the intervention area were invited for universal depression screening and subsequent care/support. We compared changes in suicide incidence of adults aged 40–64 years for the 4-year pre- and post-implementation periods in the intervention group with the control group and the whole country. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) of the outcomes were adjusted for age group, gender and interaction terms, using mixed-effects negative binomial regression models. Suicide rates among intervention and control subgroups were compared.ResultsThe screening procedure was offered to 52% of the intervention group, and 61% of those contacted responded over the implementation period. Suicide rates decreased more in the intervention group [IRR 0.57, 95% (CI) 0.41–0.78; F1,36 = 12.52, p = 0.001] than the control group (IRR proportion 1.63, 95% CI 1.06–2.48; F1,82 = 5.20, p = 0.025) or the whole country (IRR proportion 1.64, 95% CI 1.16–2.34; F1,42 = 8.21, p = 0.006). Sensitivity analyses confirmed the results from the primary analysis. There were lower suicide rates among both respondents and non-respondents to the screening than in the control group during the implementation period.ConclusionsPrevention efforts involved in the depression screening intervention were probably successful in reducing suicide rates.

Anaemia is currently still a global health problem. About 26.8% of Indonesian adolescents suffer from anaemia. Most of them do not realize that they suffer from anaemia, neither do they understand the effects of it; this, therefore, warrants a need for health education by utilizing online technology. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of health education through online learning on the knowledge level of adolescents about anaemia. This study is quasi-experiment research with a pretest–posttest using a control-group design. The sampling technique used was stratified random sampling, with a total of 36 respondents who were divided into control and intervention groups. The respondents were screened using the Haemoglobin Test Strip Monitoring System and data were collected using a questionnaire. Data analysis in this study used the Wilcoxon and Mann–Whitney tests. The results showed that there was an increase in the mean knowledge value of anaemic adolescents (p < 0.05) based on the Wilcoxon test results, while based on the Mann–Whitney test, there was no difference between the intervention and control groups (p > 0.05). Health education through online learning media can be given to adolescents because through these media, adolescents can quickly get information related to anaemia anywhere and anytime, and there is a need for active interaction during activities. Keywords: online learning, health education, anaemia, adolescents

The aim of the study was to determine the effects of a multi-component community-based health promotion intervention on body mass index (BMI) z-scores and waist circumference (WC) in three- to eight-year-old children. A quasi-experimental design was adopted to evaluate the effects of the SoL intervention involving three intervention and three control communities. The 19-month intervention was based on the supersetting approach and was designed to promote healthier eating and physical activity among children and their families. BMI z-scores and WC were measured at baseline and follow-up. At baseline, 238 (54%) and 214 (51%) of all eligible children were measured from intervention and control, respectively. The change over time in the BMI z-scores of children from the intervention group was significantly different from that of the control group (p = 0.001). BMI z-scores increased over time in the intervention group in contrast to the control group, whose BMI z-scores decreased (difference in change between groups 0.19 z-scores 95% CI 0.08, 0.30). No significant differences were observed for WC. The results showed no favourable effects of the intervention of Project SoL on BMI z-scores and WC in children. Further studies based on a larger sample size and a longer intervention duration are needed.
