The lecturing instruction method stands out as the most used education method in university classrooms. Students and researchers have developed study techniques to reduce the disadvantages of this method to increase success at the undergraduate level. The most important, common, and traditional of them is taking note. The verbatim notetaking, which is widely used outside of the lesson, is seen as well as it is also seen that the note takers take it by generating them in their own way. With the development of technology in the notetaking process, it is seen that digital tools have become widespread in addition to the pen. In this study, the effects of generative and verbatim taking notes on success and its persistence were examined. The study group of the study consists of 116 education faculty students studying in Turkish and Social Sciences education programs. Within the scope of the research, demographic information will be presented to the participants in a way that does not violate personal privacy; In the analysis of the opinions, utmost attention was paid to the rules of scientific and research ethics, assuring that the participants will be coded in a way that does not evoke identity information. A pre-experimental study was conducted with four groups of 29 students. The groups made the verbatim and generative note taking with pen and keyboard. The first and second post-tests were applied to measure the success of taking notes during the lesson and its persistence. According to the results of the study, it was determined that taking notes with a pen by the generative method has more positive effects than using the keyboard or taking verbatim notes on both success and persistence.

Prediction of human physical traits and demographic information from genomic data challenges privacy and data deidentification in personalized medicine. To explore the current capabilities of phenotype-based genomic identification, we applied whole-genome sequencing, detailed phenotyping, and statistical modeling to predict biometric traits in a cohort of 1,061 participants of diverse ancestry. Individually, for a large fraction of the traits, their predictive accuracy beyond ancestry and demographic information is limited. However, we have developed a maximum entropy algorithm that integrates multiple predictions to determine which genomic samples and phenotype measurements originate from the same person. Using this algorithm, we have reidentified an average of >8 of 10 held-out individuals in an ethnically mixed cohort and an average of 5 of either 10 African Americans or 10 Europeans. This work challenges current conceptions of personal privacy and may have far-reaching ethical and legal implications.

In this study, we enhanced a problem-based learning (PBL) environment with affordable, everyday technologies that can be found in most university classrooms (e.g., projectors, tablets, students’ own smartphones, traditional paper–pencil, and Facebook). The study was conducted over a 3-year period, with 60 postgraduate learners in a human–computer interaction course, following a PBL approach to teaching and learning. First, this article contributes a detailed description of how PBL can be enacted in a multimodal, technology-rich classroom. Second, the study presents evaluation data on learners’ technology adoption experience while engaging in PBL. Overall, the participants positively endorsed the learning environment, rating their experience highly on scales of communication and interaction, reflection, perceived learning, and satisfaction. In addition, quantitative content analysis of Facebook use documented how the physical and digital tools in the environment, coupled with the capability of Facebook as a recordkeeping and communication tool, were integral part of the PBL process.

Recommendations made by policy makers, increasing competitive pressure and growing popularity of digital media among participants of teaching processes contribute to their increasingly extensive use at Polish universities. The fact that the teaching processes has entered the new, digital dimension reveals the need for information concerning the relevance of use of electronic media, especially from the perspective of achieving learning outcomes. Given the above, the purpose of this paper is to present results of research on opinions of both students and academics on the need and significanceof the application of digital media in the learning processes.For the purposes of the article, a quantitative research was conducted among 86 students and 66 teachers from University of Economics in Katowice. The data was collected in April 2015 using an online surveying technique and analyzed using statistical description.In the light of our results, the application of electronic media seems to not only be imposed by macro- and micro-environmental conditions, but also to be expected by the main participants of educational processes taking place at university level. The results show that both groups of respondents consider the use of digital media at least as advisable for the achievement of learning outcomes (71.8% of responses covered labels: advisable, recommended or required). However, the level of necessity is slightly higher when digital tools are used by students (80.7%) than by teachers (70.3%). In general, multimedia presentations have been identifiedas the most required form of digital media application in teaching at the university.

The present study investigated how stretching exercises (Static, Dynamic and Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF)) along with Caflam (diclofenac potassium) affect the flexibility of female athletes at Punjab University Level. It is a controlled experiment with (n=40) female athletes, aged 18-24 years, divided into two groups intervention (N=30) and control group (N=10) randomly. Stretching exercises were conducted through 6 weeks divided into two sessions that consisted of both static and dynamic exercises in each session. Flexibility was measured with sit and reach test in pre and post evaluation sessions. The study purpose was to identify the effect of stretching exercises on flexibility of female athletes (N=40) by using different stretching exercises techniques (static and dynamic stretching exercises) on female athletes. Paired sample t-test used and found that it showed highly significant results using “Statistical Package for Social Sciences” (SPSS) V.22 utilized. The effect size was also calculated through Cohans’D which was 1.41. The subjects were followed for 4 months to check the recurrence rate of the control & intervention groups and found that 19% having injuries of lower extremity (control group) and 11% having after post-exercise evaluation (intervention group).

The potential and realization of zakat reported by BAZNAS as a government agency are still far from expectations. One indication that appears significantly as a cause of digital sociology is the increasing number of actors using platforms to collect zakat. This then needs to be explored further about its attention, considering the digitization will not be stopped as well. This review is analyzed using a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis through relevant literature study techniques in order to form conceptual/ new findings. The results of the review suggest that it’s easy to find support in the digital age for activism through the use of digital tools. Thus, it’s able to encourage other actors to be involved in seeking and collecting zakat. Like the two sides of the coin, the ease for muzaki in distributing zakat certainly occurs thanks to digitization. On the other hand, the supervision of related stakeholders down to the individual level as zakat/ alms collectors must be considered, especially from BAZNAS. If this is not the case, the distribution of zakat can be misused due to its own interests. In the future, because they can’t cut off the development of digital devices and actors, juggernaut symptoms will occur.

A dominant discourse in the social sciences theorizes that religious diversity puts individuals’ health at risk via interreligious hostility. However, this discourse overlooks the different subtypes of religious diversity and the moderation of political institutions. To better understand the issue of diversity and health, in this study, we distinguish between two subtypes of religious diversity—polarization and fractionalization—and argue that their impacts on health are heterogeneous. Using a sample of 67,399 individuals from 51 societies drawn from the 2010–2014 wave of the World Values Survey, our multilevel analyses show that religious polarization is negatively associated with individual health, whereas the health effects of religious fractionalization are positive. Moreover, the associations between religious polarization/fractionalization and individual health are found to depend on the democratic level of the state. In more democratic countries, the negative effects of polarization on health are mitigated, and the positive effects of fractionalization are stronger.

AbstractThe current study compares the effects of two types of pronunciation instruction (segmental- and suprasegmental-based) on the development of second-year Chinese undergraduate students’ English pronunciation as against a group with no specific pronunciation (NSP) instruction. The participants were 90 university-level students in the Chinese mainland, from three intact classes. One class was taught with a segmental focus (N = 30) and the second with a suprasegmental focus (N = 31), while the third received NSP instruction (N = 29). The results showed that after an 18-week period of instruction, both the segmental and suprasegmental groups made statistically significant progress in pronunciation, as measured by comprehensibility on a sentence-reading task; however, only the suprasegmental group made statistically significant progress in comprehensibility at the spontaneous level, and it was also the only group that maintained these spontaneous gains on the delayed posttest. The positive effects of explicit pronunciation instruction in general and of suprasegmental instruction in particular account for the findings.

Scientific research is seen as a tool to discover new knowledge and create advanced products for the betterment of society. However, the contribution of research outputs is only valuable unless it is done with the required values and by specific standards. By using questionnaire to conduct a survey on 169 permanent faculty members at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, HCMC, the author found out that the respondents had adequate perception to research ethics, however, they inadequately perceived the values of research methods, and relationship among stakeholders and research sponsors. From these findings, some recommendations are proposed to improve the research effectiveness at the university level.

Purpose: The AMO framework has been widely accepted in HRM literature for explaining the linkage between human resources practices and performance. However, it remains unclear whether this model has been fully demonstrated or not. Hence, we propose a systematic review that aims at identifying those investigations that have thoroughly tested the model, as well as the approaches used by them.Design/methodology/approach: Systematic literature review, filtering scientific papers published in journals indexed in Scopus, Web of Science or Google Scholar, from the year 1993 to 2016, in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities with research that indirectly apply the AMO model in their analysis.Findings: AMO model is an excellent and structured framework that provides a better understanding of the relationship between HRM and performance. Moreover, the effectiveness of the model's proposal appears to be beyond doubt. In fact, a well trained and skilled employee will perform better, and a motivated worker will be ready to "go the extra mile". Likewise, if the work environment does not provide adequate opportunities, both abilities and motivation might become meaningless. However, we consider that many other factors could influence the positive effects of HPWS. As a matter of fact, not only contextual factors, but also individual beliefs, personal affinities, or personal circumstances (among others) might affect the implementation of these practices and the subsequent outcomes. For this reason, we consider that developing an HRM model that perfectly fit any situation is a very complicated, if not impossible, task.Research limitations/implications: The results show a significant variability in both research approaches and variables taken into consideration. In addition, it seems that little research has been conducted to verify the AMO model directly. Therefore, we consider that there is a great need to study the model from a more systematic perspective. A thorough understanding of the model could lead to a better understanding of the problems that organizations face when implementing human resource practices.Originality/value: Our study shed light on some aspects of the AMO framework within the HRM context. Specifically, we aimed to identify whether or not it is possible to confirm the model as it was originally proposed. We also find out which HR practices and measures of performance were considered across investigations, to define a standard approach.
