Nepal is also witnessing the expansion of life span and hence an enhancement in the population of the elderly. In Nepal, individuals over 60 years of age are considered elderly. According to the 2011 census of Nepal, there were 2.1 million elderly inhabitants, which constitute 8.1percent of the total population in the country. Pashupati Bridrashram the only one shelter for elderly people run by the government which was established in 1976 as the first residential facility for elders. This study was conducted to assess the health and social needs of elderlyresiding at Birateshwor Briddhashram and Mahila Jagriti Briddhashram Biratnagar. Descriptive cross sectional research design has been used to describe characteristics of apopulation. There are four registered old age home in Biratnagar Metropolitan City, amongthem only two were selected purposively. Non random sampling technique has been used in which Purposive Sampling method has been adopted. Both health and social needs we reassessed using semi-structured interview schedule which consisted of multiple response questionnaire. There were fifty-seven elders, only forty were selected purposively who can give their information, twenty-four females and sixteen males were selected for interview. Most of the elders came to old age home because of lack of own shelter, sixty percent elders have no any children; mostly they were widow or widower. Majority of them had vision (60 %), walking (46%), hearing problems (33 %) and minority (10 %) have inability problems in moving extremities, difficulty in talking. Only a few elders came there because of maltreatment by their family members. The study has suggested for establishment of health post or healthcare center, provision of ambulance to meet their health needs and importance of care taker to make their life easier, provision of television, kitchen garden, temple to meet their social and spiritual needs.

Background. Having a healthy and prosperous life in old age is the hope of every elderly person. In achieving a healthy and prosperous old age, various efforts have been made by the government, one of which is an Elderly Integrated Service Post (Posyandu Lansia) program.Objectives. This study aims to analyze the relationship of motivation of the elderly and elderly visits to the Elderly Integrated Service Post (Posyandu Lansia) in Klampisan Hamlet, Kedunggede Village, Dlanggu Sub-District, Mojokerto District.Methods. The research design used is analytic cross sectional. The population in this study were all elderly residents of Klampisan Hamlet, Kedunggede Village, Dlanggu Subdistrict, Mojokerto District who had attended the Elderly Integrated Service Post (Posyandu Lansia) as many as 52 people. The sampling technique in the study was simple random sampling. The sample size in this study was 46 people. The measuring instrument used was a questionnaire for motivational variables, and a visit book for elderly visiting to the Elderly Integrated Service Post (Posyandu Lansia) variables.Results. The results showed that the average value of motivation was 68.5870, indicating strong motivation. The average visit value is 1.9348, indicating that the visit is not active. Based on the results of the analysis using the Spearman Rho correlation test obtained ρ = 0.00 <α = 0.05, so that it can be interpreted that there is a relationship between the motivation of the elderly and elderly visits to the Elderly Integrated Service Post (Posyandu Lansia) in Klampisan Hamlet, Kedunggede Village, Dlanggu Sub-District, Mojokerto District.Conclusion. Based on the results of the study showed that there was a relationship between the motivation of the elderly and elderly visits to the Elderly Integrated Service Post in Klampisan Hamlet, Kedunggede Village, Dlanggu Sub-District, Mojokerto District, which could mean that the elderly had strong motivation, then the visit to the Elderly Integrated Service Post would be active. On the contrary, the elderly whose motivation is weak then visit the Elderly Integrated Service Post (Posyandu Lansia) is not active. Keywords: motivation of the elderly, elderly visits, the elderly integrated service post, posyandu lansia

AbstractElder abuse is a common social problem in developed and developing countries and it imposes a huge impact in the physical and mental health of the elderly. With the changes in the socioeconomic aspect of Nepalese society, many elderly are relocating from their homes to old age homes. This study was conducted to assess the status of abuse among the elderly before they enter to old aged homes.A cross sectional study was conducted to assess the status of abuse among elderly before they enter to the old age homes. Consecutive sampling technique was used and semi structured interview schedule was used to collect the data from 109 elderly residing in 6 old aged homes in Pokhara. Collected data was analyzed descriptive and inferential (chi square) statistics using SPSS version 16.The findings from the study showed that that 97.2% of the elderly experienced some forms of abuse before they were brought to the old Age home. Majority of them reported that they experienced neglect (83.5%) followed by verbal abuse (34.9) while least of them (5.5%) reported that they suffered physical abuse(2.8%) and financial abuse(2.8%). However, no significant association could be seen between abuse of elderly with age, education, marital status, place of residence, having children and adequacy of income. It is recommended that the nation develop and implement necessary plans to strengthen the social security of the people at their old age.

Abstract: Factor Of Elderly Frequency Visits In Elderly Integrated Service Post Of East Pontianak District. Indonesia’s elderly population has increased but their health condition is still considered low. In this regard, the government has conducted a special program, namely IHC for elderly, in certain areas and run by the local community, so that they can get health care easily. However, the frequency of the elderly health visit still lows with an average visit of 41.76%. This number is still far from the target that has been set by the Health Department (80%). This study aimed to determine factors of elderly frequency visit the in integrated health care centre of East Pontianak district. Using cross-sectional approach, 75 respondents participated as the samples. They were selected by using purposive sampling technique. The data were statistically analyzed by using chi-square test. The study revealed that there was a correlation of elderly knowledge (p=0,035), family support (p= 0,024) with elderly frequency in visiting the integrated service post centre of East Pontianak district. The variables that didn’t correlate with elderly frequency in visiting the integrated service post centre were elderly perception and distance. From the findings, health workers need to encourage the elderly to be more active in visiting the health center.Abstrak: Faktor Frekuensi Kunjungan Lansia Ke Posyandu Lansia Di Kecamatan Pontianak Timur. Jumlah penduduk lansia di Indonesia telah meningkat dan kesehatan lansia masih rendah, pemerintah mengadakan program khusus yaitu Posyandu Lansia di daerah tertentu yang telah disepakati, yang digerakkan oleh masyarakat di mana mereka bisa mendapatkan pelayanan kesehatan. Namun, frekuensi kunjungan lansia ke Posyandu di beberapa posyandu masih rendah dengan rata-rata kunjungan yaitu, 41,76% hal ini masih jauh dari target yang telah di tetapkan oleh dinas kesehatan yaitu 80%. Disarankan kepada petugas kesehatan atau Puskesmas untuk terus meningkatkan sosialisasi dan motivasi untuk para lansia agar lebih aktif berkunjung ke posyandu lansia.

Background: Abuse of the elderly is a hidden problem in Nepalese community. Pokhara city is highly affected by urbanization, modernization and migration that predispose older adults to social isolation and financial difficulties increasing their risk to abuse. This study aims to fill the gap in the knowledge in the area of abuse of elderly in Pokhara city.Objectives: The major objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of caregiver abuse experienced by the older adults and find out the factors associated with the abuse. Method: A cross sectional study was used for the study. Convenience sampling technique was used and data was collected from 192 elderly above the age of 60 years residing a community of Pokhara-28, Kaski at their households using a structured interview schedule. Data was collected in June 2018, for a period of one month. Before data collection, informed written consent was taken from participants. The data was analyzed by using SPSS-16 and chi-square test was used as inferential statistics to determine the association between the elder abuse and selected variables.Result: We found out that 65.6% of the elderly experienced at least one abuse in the last 6 months. The most common forms of abuse were caregiver neglect (55.2%) and psychological abuse (38.5%). The elderly abuse was statistically significant with female sex (p=0.001), unmarried/widow/widower/separated/divorced (p=.021), illiterate (p=0.002), and among those having chronic illness (p=0.003). Conclusion: Almost 7 out of 10 elderly experienced abuse in the past 6 months. The most common form of abuse was caregiver neglect followed by psychological and financial abuse. Older adults who were females, unmarried/widowed/separated/divorced, illiterate and those having chronic disease were at higher risk for abuse.

Abstrak Activity of daily living (ADL) adalah aktivitas pokok bagi perawatan diri. Activity of daily living meliputi antara lain: ke toilet, makan, berpakaian (berdandan), mandi, dan berpindah tempat. Pengkajian ADL penting untuk mengetahui tingkat ketergantungan lansia dalam rangka menetapkan level bantuan bagi lansia tersebut dan untuk menyusun rencana perawatan jangka panjang. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui gambaran tingkat kemandirian lansia dalam pemenuhan ADL yang tinggal di rojinhome Thinsaguno Ie Itoman Okinawa Jepang. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif observasional. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh lansia di rojinhome Thinsaguno Ie Itoman Okinawa Jepang sejumlah 34 responden. Penentuan sampel menggunakan teknik total sampling. Alat ukur yang digunakan adalah lembar checklist Barthel Index. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis data univariat yang ditampilkan dalam distribusi frekuensi. Hasil penelitian menunjukan rata-rata umur yaitu 83,23 tahun dan paling dominan pada rentang umur old (75-90 tahun) yaitu 70,6%. Jenis kelamin sebagian besar perempuan yaitu 64,7%, tingkat kemandirian sedang dalam ADL yaitu 38,2%. Tingkat kemandirian lansia  berdasarkan umur paling dominan pada rentang umur old (75-90 tahun) dengan tingkat kemandirian sedang (29,4%). Tingkat kemandirian lansia berdasarkan jenis kelamin paling dominan pada jenis kelamin perempuan dengan ketergantungan sedang (23,5%). Activity of daily living includes, among others: toileting, eating, dressing, showering, and moving places. ADL assessment is important to determine the level of dependence of the elderly in order to determine the level of assistance for the elderly and to develop a long-term care plan. The purpose of this study was to describe the level of independence of the elderly in fulfilling the ADL at rojinhome of Thinsaguno Ie Itoman Okinawa, Japan. The type of this research is descriptive observational with cross sectional approach. The sample in this research were all 34 elderly people at rojinhome Thinsaguno Ie Itoman Okinawa Japan. Determination of the sample using total sampling technique. The measuring instrument used is the Barthel Index checklist sheet. This study uses univariate data analysis which is displayed in the frequency distribution. The results showed that the average age was 83.23 years and the most dominant in the old age range (75-90 years) was 70.6%. The gender of most of the women was 64.7%, the level of independence was moderate in ADL, namely 38.2%. The level of elderly independence based on age is the most dominant in the old age range (75-90 years) with a moderate level of independence (29.4%). The level of independence of the elderly based on sex was the most dominant in the female sex with moderate dependence (23.5%). Keywords: elderly, activity of daily living, level of independence

Increased life expectancy is in line with the increase in the number of elderly people from year to year. Elderly has many changes in the body. Changes in the body's system cause a lot of decrease in physical ability. The most dangerous and high risk space for the elderly is the bathroom. The bathroom is dangerous due to a decrease in physical ability which causes the safety of the elderly during activities such as defecation using a squat Water closet (WC). The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the characteristics of respondents and the satisfaction of the elderly using squat toilets. This research method uses descriptive correlation with cross sectional approach. The total population is 73 elderly in the Tanjung Pinang nursing home. The sample of this study was 43 elderly using simple random sampling technique. The analysis used is frequency, percentage and chisquare. This study also showed that sex and height were not related to satisfaction with the use of squatting lavatories, but age and weight had a relationship with the satisfaction of the elderly using squat toilets. The results of this study recommend the use of a sitting Water Closet that is comfortable and safe for the elderly. AbstractObjectiveThe study intended to understand the effect of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on western Indian elderly care homes. The study aimed to know the actions taken by administration of homes and challenges faced during the lockdown period.MethodTotal 44 care homes across three states of western India were contacted for data collection during the period of September-November 2020. Structured interview of the manager or owner of the elderly care homes were taken to gather required information to achieve the study objectives.ResultsOut of 44 care homes, seven care homes reported 146 case of corona virus infection and four deaths. Hence, the reported covid cases rate found to be 928 per 10,000 residents.DiscussionResults of the study indicated that significant steps were taken by these old age care homes to stave off the infection spread among the inmates. It was observed that average 26% of the occupants were sent back to their home/relative’s home before the lockdown to decongest the care homes. Administrators adopted the new policies at care home and adhered the government guidelines. Care homes in western India seemed to have very low infection rate and very low number of deaths as compared to western world.

Background: Dry eye is the common complaint of patients presenting to ophthalmologist. Warm compresses at 105 0F have been shown to thicken the tear film lipid layer, decrease tear film evaporation, improve tear film break-up time, decrease ocular surface staining and improve dry eye symptoms among elderly clients. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of warm compress on level of dry eye among elderly clients at selected old age home in Chennai. Methods: This study based on quantitative evaluative approach with quasi experimental pre and posttest control group design. The total of 60 elderly clients were selected through non-probability convenience sampling technique among 30 were experimental group from Brindavanam Old age Home and 30 were control group from Vetri Old age Home. The tool was structured interview schedule and Schirmer’s test. The warm compress was applied for 10 minutes intermittently in morning and evening for 7 days on both eyes for experimental group. Results: The elderly clients in experimental group 43.3% were in >76 years of age where as in control group 12(40%) were in >76 years. In experimental and control group of right eye, posttest mean and SD score was 10.063.17 and 7.701.03‘t’ test score was 3.76. In experimental and control group of left eye, posttest mean and SD score was 113.49 and 7.90.94‘t’ value was 4.15, which was significant at P0.05 level. Conclusions: This study concluded that warm compress was effective in reducing the level of dry eye among elderly clients.

Background: Old age or elderly is the final stage of the normal life span. The elderly population is facing many health problems such as physical, mental, psychological and social etc. Factors like loneliness, low self-esteem, social isolation, quality of life and several others negatively affect elderly population and increase the risk of various health problems in elderly people.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted, in which 200 elderly from Sirmour participated and the subjects were selected using total enumeration sampling technique. For the data collection the Semi-structured interview schedule, WHO brief-26 QoL assessment scale and Rosenberg self-esteem scale (10-items) were used and data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS version-23.Results: Present study shows that religion, education, occupation, monthly income have a very strong significant association at 0.05 level of significance with WHO bref-26 scale. Rosenberg self-esteem scale shows 165 (81.7%) of elderly have high self-esteem whereas 35 (17.3%) of them have low self-esteem. And no significant association was found between the self-esteem and demographic variable.Conclusions: Indicates that levels of QoL between elderly are moderate and many demographic, social and health factors are correlated with QoL. Also, no significant association was found between Rosenberg self-esteem scale with demographic variable.
