Aceh is one of the provinces with a high poverty rate and is also a region with a high poverty rate in Sumatra, including Langsa City. Therefore, one of the efforts to alleviate poverty in Langsa City is by utilizing zakat funds managed by the Baitul Mal Institute, which will later be distributed to the poor in Langsa City. This study aims to identify the role of the Baitul Mal Institution in alleviating poverty and improving the welfare of the people of Langsa City. From the research results, it is concluded that the distribution of zakat funds to the poor is still ineffective and still not on target so that people still do not feel prosperity.

The oil economy of Nigeria is very important to the country, but the people of Nigeria still suffer from a corrupt government. Despite the revenues being brought in from oil exports, the Nigerian government still holds a large unemployment rate and a high poverty rate. This paper shows the amount of oil being produced per day, as well as, the process by which the oil is brought to the market. This paper also shows the labor to GDP ratio, the major exports, and the major imports of Nigeria. Finally, an understanding of the ethnic struggle within Nigeria is looked at, as well as, the illegal oil racketeering that is costing the Nigerian governments billions of dollars. Until the people of Nigeria can take control of its government and rid themselves of the crushing militias that controls the politics in Nigeria, the people are doomed to suffer.

In recent times, microfinance has emerged as a major innovation in the rural financial marketplace. Microfinance largely addresses the issue of access to financial services. In trying to understand the innovation of microfinance and how it has proved to be effective, the author looks at certain design features of microfinance. He first starts by identifying the need for financial service institutions which is basically to bridge the gap between the need for financial services across time, geographies, and risk profiles. In providing services that bridge this gap, formal institutions have limited access to authentic information both in terms of transaction history and expected behaviour and, therefore, resort to seeking excessive information thereby adding to the transaction costs. The innovation in microfinance has been largely to bridge this gap through a series of trustbased surrogates that take the transaction-related risks to the people who have the information — the community through measures of social collateral. In this paper, the author attempts to examine the trajectory of institutional intermediation in the rural areas, particularly with the poor and how it has evolved over a period of time. It identifies a systematic breach of trust as one of the major problems with the institutional interventions in the area of providing financial services to the poor and argues that microfinance uses trust as an effective mechanism to address one of the issues of imperfect information in financial transactions. The paper also distinguishes between the different models of microfinance and identifies which of these models use trust in a positivist frame and as a coercive mechanism. The specific objectives of the paper are to: Superimpose the role of trust in various types of exchanges and see how it impacts the effectiveness of repeated transactions. While greater access to information fosters trust and thus helps social networks to reduce transaction costs, there could be limits to which exchanges could solely depend on networks and trust. Look at the frontiers where mutual trust cannot work as a surrogate for lower appraisal costs. Use an example in the Canadian context and see how an entity that started on the basis of social networks and trust had to morph into using the techniques used by other formal nonneighbourhood institutions as it grew in size and went beyond a threshold. Using the Canadian example, the author argues that as the transactions get sophisticated, it is possible to achieve what informal networks have achieved through the creative use of information technology. While we find that the role of trust both in the positivist and the coercive frame does provide some interesting insights into how exchanges with the poor could be managed, there still could be breaches in the assumptions. This paper identifies the conditions under which the breaches could possibly happen and also speculates on the effect of such breaches.

Corruption is an extraordinary crime which gives domino effect on government systems. The impacts include low economic growth and high poverty rate. Corruption enriches certain class only so that the budget which is allocated for the development of the country cannot be fully absorbed. Public service facilities for health, education, and administration cannot operate optimally due to the stalled building construction. To increase the economic growth of a country, a structured improvement is needed by involving the role of citizen in monitoring the government system. The development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enhances the transparency of ongoing government systems and public services. Studies conducted by Qiang (2009) and Andersen (2009) showed that the implementation of ICT proved to be able to increase economic growth in developing and developed countries with an increase in GDP. Khan and Majeed (2019) also proved that the implementation of ICT and E-Government also increased GDP for Southeast Asian countries in the period 1980-2015. The ICT developments include e-government, big data analysis, blockchain technology, and whistleblowing systems. The implementation of ICT in government systems, such as licensing systems and procurement systems, provides increased transparency and quality so that economic growth also increases. It takes a lot of money to implement ICT in the government system, but it also becomes an opportunity for state officials to abuse their authority. An example of the use of ICT in Indonesia is the procurement of E-ID Cards. Therefore, the integrated whistleblowing system can be sought to guard the benefits of implementing ICT in increasing economic growth.

Although Ulrich Zwingli started the Swiss Reformation in Zürich, his successor Heinrich Bullinger was the main stabilizer for the reform movement during his forty-plus years as chief minister from 1532 to 1575. Bullinger’s advocacy through his sermons and speeches (Fürträge) before the city council regularly reminded the politicians of their duty to care for the poor. Although the Zurich council circumscribed the role of ministers to spiritual matters, Bullinger believed that ensuring a proper poor relief system was an important part of the pastors’ ministry to the people. Because church funds were in secular control, Bullinger’s involvement in poor relief emerged from his development as a church leader in which he justified his social-political critiques against the lack of effective poor relief based on Scripture, church history, Christian ethics, and socioeconomic needs. His persistence urged the Zürich council to reconsider and revise its poor relief policies to include poverty prevention.

Neglected parasitic diseases are a group of infections currently considered as a worldwide concern. This fact can be attributed to the migration of these diseases to developed and developing countries, associated with therapeutic insufficiency resulted from the low investment in the research and development of new drugs. In order to overcome this situation, bioprospecting supports medicinal chemistry in the identification of new scaffolds with therapeutically appropriate physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties. Among them, we highlight the nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds, as they are secondary metabolites of many natural products with potential biological activity. The objective of this work was to review studies within a 10-year timeframe (2009- 2019), focusing on the pharmacological application of nitrogen bioprospectives (pyrrole, pyridine, indole, quinoline, acridine, and their respective derivatives) against neglected parasitic infections (malaria, leishmania, trypanosomiases, and schistosomiasis), and their application as a template for semi-synthesis or total synthesis of potential antiparasitic agents. In our studies, it was observed that among the selected articles, there was a higher focus on the attempt to identify and obtain novel antimalarial compounds, in a way that an extensive amount of studies involving all heterocyclic nitrogen nuclei were found. On the other hand, the parasites with the lowest number of publications up until the present date have been trypanosomiasis, especially those caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, and schistosomiasis, where some heterocyclics have not even been cited in recent years. Thus, we conclude that despite the great biodiversity on the planet, little attention has been given to certain neglected tropical diseases, especially those that reach countries with a high poverty rate.

The speech of Father Józef Wrzesiński, delivered in 1980 during a sitting of the International Conference on Poverty and Social Exclusion of UNESCO set forward a programme for action. The author drew attention to the unappreciated knowledge that the poor themselves have on poverty on the basis of their own direct experiences and emphasises the role of the knowledge about poverty of the people working amongst those who experience its effects. Without these two types of information on the topic, academic knowledge would be incomplete and inadequate, since it cannot form the basis of a programme of activity. In these three types of knowledge and their roles, Father Wrzesinski refers to the experience of the International Movement ATD Fourth World.
