The paper argues that the quality of idiom translations depends on the appropriate strategy used while translating them because idiomatic expressions cannot be translated from their words. This study was carried out to describe the meaning of the idiomatic expression and the application of Chesterman's strategies in translating idioms and identify the speech acts of the utterances conveyed by the speaker in the data. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were gathered from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The study also used their Indonesian version to find out the translation of the idiomatic expressions. One hundred five quotes were taken from the novels. As a result, Unit Shift appears more frequently in the novel as a syntactic strategy followed by Scheme Change. Furthermore, in terms of semantic approach, distribution Change is the most common strategy that emerges from the novels, followed by Trope Change. The Assertive Act is the most dominant act delivered by the speaker behind the utterances in speech acts.

<p>This research describes the translation strategy of idiomatic expression used by translator and the quality of translation of idiomatic expression in the short story by Roald Dahl entitled “Man from the South”. This research uses descriptive qualitative method and uses content analysis as the data collection technique. To check the validity of this research, the researcher uses triangulation such as, data triangulation, investigator triangulation, theory triangulation, and methodological triangulation. The results of this research shows that several translation strategies are applied, which include idioms of similar meaning and form, translation by paraphrase, and translation by omission. In this research, paraphrase strategy is in the most applied strategy87.88% of the data (58 idiomatic expressions) use translation by paraphrase. This research also shows that the quality of translation of idiomatic expression translation which consists of accuracy, naturalness, and clarity is categorized as good translation. It can be seen from the results that 75% of the data are accurate, 78, 79% of the data are natural, and78, 79% of the data are clear. </p>

The purpose of this study is to describe the quality of the language available in the novel teenager "D'Angel Princess" by Luna Torashyngu. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. Data in this study Various styles on the novel teenagers "D'Angel Princess" by Luna Torashyngu. Documentation technique is used in the data collection technigue. Data analysis technique in this research is done through steps, that is: (1) reading novelteenlit "Angel Angel" by Luna Torashyngu (2) hiding data, (3) classifying data, (4) analyzing data, and (5) conclude. Test the validity of the data is a credibility test conducted by increasing persistence with the supervisor during the process, and discussion with colleagues. The results found in the novel D'Angel Princess by Luna Torashyngu in slang and not used to separate the characteristics of the teen novel. Then the word denotation and author connotation to express and convince the compiler readers convey narration and description in the story, said Science used as a means to monetize a novel theme with a scientific theme, the words used to sort out teenage characters who look slang. The use of sentences is used to describe the main character in the sentence Usage. The author's written sentence contains descriptions and narrations to make the story more interesting and easy to understand. Comment topic sentence  gives a beautiful impression or a beautiful comment on the characters. Use of minor sentences is used  to give challenge and sincerity to what people say so that readers feel confidence. <p><em>Using descriptive qualitative method, this paper aims to identify the forms of mitigation of criticizing speech acts in two novels entitled To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set A Watchman, to identify translation technique used and to describe the quality of translation of expressions mitigating speech act of criticizing in those novels. Data used were linguistic units (words, phrases, clauses, or sentences) represented mitigation types of criticizing speech act. The findings indicate that there were two mitigation types of speech act criticizing, namely external and internal. Expressions mitigating speech act of criticizing from those novels mainly had an equivalent message in Source Text (ST). Translation techniques applied to translate mitigation forms in criticizing speech act imply the translator’s competence in conveying the message of Source Text. Thus, it will impact on shifting meaning or even level of politeness.</em></p>

Subtitling is an effective way to provide dialogues or narrative for a movie. The benefit is for people to enjoy the film even though its different from their native language. They enjoy movies over the world with different countries and styles by the dialogues translated. This research aims to know the strategy of responding to arguing in the file's subtitle titled Becoming Jane, to find out the translation techniques used by the translator, and to assess the translation quality in terms of the accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The research method is descriptive qualitative method with "Becoming Jane" movie and its subtitles as the data. Data were collected from document analysis and focus group discussions with the score of the accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The results indicate that the character used a strategy of agreeing, persisting, and complying. While six methods of translation were found, namely literal, modulation, established equivalence, borrowing, and adaptation. The quality of the translation of the strategy of responding to speech acts has been categorized as less accurate, less acceptable, and moderate in terms of readability

This study is conducted to analyze the translation strategies used to translate the idiomatic expressions in the novel “A Walk to Remember” into Indonesian, to analyze the degree of equivalence of the Indonesian translation, and to find out the relation between the strategy used and the degree of equivalence. The translation strategies used in this study are proposed by Baker while the degrees of equivalence are analyzed by using Bell’s theory. This research belongs to descriptive research using qualitative method to describe the objectives of this study. The data are analyzed by comparing the idioms in the English version to the Indonesian translation. After the data are identified, they are examined to find out the relation between the strategies used and the degree of equivalence. The findings of the analysis are: (1) four strategies were used to translate idioms in the novel A Walk to Remember into Indonesian, (2) in terms of degree of equivalence, it was found that most of the data were identified into fully equivalent translation, (3) in the relation between translation strategies used and the degree of equivalence, it was revealed that the translation strategies used mostly produce fully equivalent with complete meaning. This paper entitled “The Translation Ideology of English Idiomatic Expressions in Temperatures Rising into Indonesian in Hasrat Membara” which discusses the use of translation technique, translation method and translation ideology of idiomatic expressions. The problems of the study mainly focuses on the types of translation technique, translation method and translation ideology found in the novel. The aims of this research are to find out the types of translation technique, translation method and translation ideology applied in both novels. The data are presented and explained based on theoretical framework. The data were taken from a novel written by Sandra Brown. The data were collected through documentation and observation. This study used descriptive qualitative method and applied the theory proposed by Molina and Albir (2002) to classify the types of translation technique, the theory proposed by Newmark (1988) to describe the types of translation method and the theory proposed by Hatim (2001) to find the ideology applied in the translated novel. Among twelve translation techniques, there are only five types of translation techniques found in the data of the novel namely variation, adaptation, description, deletion, and generalization. Based on the types of translation technique found, all of them are oriented towards the target language. Thus, the method used in the translated novel is communicative method which is oriented towards to the target language. Based on translation technique and method, it is concluded that the translated novel has a tendency to domestication ideology which is target language oriented.

In this global era, due to the growth of science, information, technology, and other people needs, translation becomes necessary in rendering information between languages. However, the process of translating is not as simple as switching the meaning of word for word based on the literal context.Idioms are one of the most problematical components of language. Idioms cannot be easily translated because of their unpredictable meaning and grammar. The purpose of this study is to find out; (1) the idiomatic expressions which are found in Indonesian Legends, (2) the meaning of the idiomatic expressions found in Indonesian Legends, and (3) the various strategies which are used in translating idioms in Indonesia into English found in Indonesian Legends.The descriptive qualitative research design, in the form of document analysis, was employed in this study. The instruments to collect the data were documents and expert opinion. Moreover, the documents consisted of the Bahasa Indonesia (Source Text) and English (Target Text) translation versions of five Indonesian Legends, namely; Batu Kuwung, Batu Menangis, Gunung Merapi, Tangkuban Perahu and Candi Prambanan. This study revealed that idiomatic expression translation strategy by paraphrasingwas the most dominant strategy used by the translator in translating the idiomatic expressions found in five Indonesian Legends (eleven out of eighteen cases). Meanwhile, the second most common strategy was translating by omission (six out of eighteen cases).  The last was the strategy of using an idiom of similar meaning and form which only one out of eighteen cases. Thus, it can be concluded that the translator only applied three strategies out of the main five strategies of translating idiomatic expression suggested by Baker.

The aims of this article are to observe sentences which accommodate types of respond towards criticizing and apologizing expressive speech act in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children novel, and the translation techniques used. This article employed descriptive qualitative method with content analysis and FGD (Focus Group Discussion). Content analysis was used to collect the data in terms of respond types. In addition, FGD used to determine the translation techniques. The researcher applied purposive sampling to determine the source of data. Furthermore, the data were validated using source triangulation and methodological triangulation. The researcher limited the data into four main characters in the novel. The research finding shows that there are 18 types of response. They are assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive. In addition, there are 14 translation techniques used. The translation techniques used are established equivalent, variation, explicitation, modulation, pure borrowing, implicitation, reduction, linguistic amplification, transposition, generalization, addition, literal, discursive creation, and paraphrase.Keywords: expressive speech act, responses, translation techniquesTEKNIK PENERJEMAHAN PADA KALIMAT YANG MENGAKOMODASI RESPON TERHADAP TINDAK TUTUR EKSPRESIF MENGKRITIK DAN MEMINTA MAAFAbstrakTujuan dari artikel ini adalah untuk meneliti kalimat yang mengakomodasi jenis – jenis respon terhadap tindak tutur mengkritik dan meminta maaf pada novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, dan teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan. Penelitian ini termasuk dalam penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan teknik simak dan catat dan diskusi kelompok terpusat (FGD). Teknik simak dan catat digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data yang berupa kalimat yang mengakomodasi jenis – jenis respon. Selanjutnya, diskusi kelompok terpusat digunakan untuk menentukan teknik penerjemahan apa saja yang digunakan. Peneliti menentukan sumber data penelitian menggunakan teknik cuplik. Kemudian, data penelitian divalidasi menggunakan triangulasi sumber dan triangulasi metode. Peneliti membatasi data penelitian yang berasal dari empat tokoh utama dalam novel. Temuan penelitian ini antara lain, terdapat 18 jenis respon yaitu: asertif, direktif, komisif, dan ekspresif. Sedangkan, dalam hal teknik penerjemahan terdapat 14 teknik. Teknik penerjemahan tersebut antara lain: padanan lazim, variasi, eksplisitasi, modulasi, peminjaman murni, implisitasi, reduksi, amplifikasi linguistik, transposisi, generalisasi, adisi, literal, kreasi diskursif, dan parafrasa.Kata kunci: tindak tutur ekspresif, respon, teknik penerjemahan

Shift is one of the phenomena in translation to suit with the acceptability of translation product. This article aims at finding out the shifts of form in translating passive clauses found in the novel Harry Potter translated by Listiana Srisanti. This research used a qualitative method where the research analysis relied on linguistic description and employed meaning-based to reveal and describe how is the existence of shifts of form and meaning in the translation. The data of this research were passive clauses taken from the novel “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” as the source language (SL), and the passive clauses translation in the target language (TL) obtained from the translated Novel “Harry Potter dan Relikui Kematian.” Based on the data analysis, it shows that the translation shift of form comprised structure shifts 67 data (60%), class shifts 37 data (33 %), and unit shifts 8 data (7%). Even though the shifts found in the translation, there was an acceptable translation of passive clauses. Thus, it indicated that there are shifts in translation, but it was acceptable.
