An adequate understanding of the complex connections between changes in the social relations of production and changes in the bases of group formation demands an historical approach in which consciousness and its ideological products are viewed dynamically, not as the mechanically determined superstructural reflections of material relations but as an active and constituent components of everyday social life. The concepts required for such an analysis are developed here, drawing on the seminal work of both Marx and Weber, as well as on more recent scholarship, and are applied to recent changes in agrarian relations and ideological practice in Anuradhapura District, Sri Lanka.

The revival of world history towards the end of the twentieth century was intimately connected with the rise of a new master concept in the social sciences: globalization. Historians and social scientists responded to the same generational experience that the interconnectedness of social life on the planet had arrived at a new level of intensity. The conclusions drawn from this insight in the various academic disciplines diverged considerably. The early theorists of globalization in sociology, political science, and economics disdained a historical perspective. The new concept seemed ideally suited to grasp the characteristic features of contemporary society. It helped to pinpoint the very essence of present-day modernity. Globalization opened up a way towards the social science mainstream, provided elements of a fresh terminology to a field that had suffered for a long time from an excess of descriptive simplicity.

The reality of Indonesian society is a multicultural society. Therefore, religious understanding and toleration to differences and diversity is necessary to be developed in order to create peace and harmony in the social life. This paper aims to explore the concept of Islamic Jurisprudence in the context of social diversity. This concept is important because the old fiqh concept resting on normative-theological reasonings needs to be reconstructed and replaced with contextual-progressive ones. The changes in the fiqh epistemology from normative-theological to contextual-progressive reasonings are carried out through adaptation to principles of Maqâshid al-Sharîah (basic aims of religious provisions) which are contextualized according to the social growth. The new model of fiqh constructed through combination of religious teachings and social development is expected to make a valuable contribution to the establishment of peace and harmony among all elements of Indonesia society.

The development of religion in the West at the end of the 20th century in Andrew Greeley’s view has increased in some former communist countries, especially Russia. While in other countries has decreased as in England, Netherlands, and France. In some countries it is relatively unchanged, especially the traditional Catholic countries, and in some societies the social democracy has declined and there has been an increase. Whereas in the case of individuals, Greeley finds that religion becomes more important for people as they age. Greeley observed that the survey results showed a lack of interest in religion among young people and tended to ignore it. This is due to the correlation related to lifecycle issues and not a sign of social change. In connection with the disappearance of the real world of superstition in the 17th century scientists tried to eliminate the mystical and superstitious patterns of thought and provide a more scientific and experimental pattern of thought, so that in the west in the 17th century it became history and witness that the era of superstition has begun to disappear. The superstition in western tradition is not easy to destroy because it takes a long time span of about 1563-1762 years.
