Social Networking Sites (SNSs) play an increasingly important role in the marketing of products and services. This study aims to explore the relationship between intrinsic motivations and the level of commitment of followers of the brand communities of the media that cover showbusiness. To address this issue, a cross-sectional methodological strategy was adopted in which a questionnaire with a Likert-type scale was administered to 313 users of Facebook fan pages. The main findings show that there are four groups of motivations: community spirit, enthusiasm for the brand, search for entertainment and prize chase. Each of these motivational categories features two variations in the level of commitment, with fans divided into enthusiasts and pragmatists. The findings may allow the establishment of ways to use commitment and motivation more efficiently with regard to marketing actions, something which will also contribute to SNS managers' strategic decisions.

BACKGROUND The use of social media or social networking sites (SNS) is increasing across all age groups, and one of the primary motives of using SNS is to seek health-related information. Although previous research examining the effect of SNS use on depression exist, studies regarding the effect of SNS use for health purpose on depression is limited. OBJECTIVE Our study aims to explore the relationship between SNS use for health purpose and depression across the four age groups (18-34 years old, 35-49 years old, 50-64 years old, and above 65 years old). METHODS A sample of 6,789 adults aged 18 and older was extracted from a 2017 and 2018 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). Univariate and bivariate analyses to examine the association between each variable and four age groups were conducted. Multiple linear regression analyses to predict depression level among participants with use of SNS for health purpose were conducted. RESULTS SNS use for health purpose and depression were positively associated for three age groups but not for those 65 years or older (=0.13, P<0.05; =0.08, P<0.05; =0.09, P<0.05). Income and self-reported health status indicated an inverse relationship for all age groups. The relationship with marital status differed based on age group with 18 and 34 years old showing an inverse relationship (=-0.13, P<0.01) while 65 years or older showing a positive relationship (=0.06, P<0.05). Gender was positively associated among those in the 35-49 years old (=0.09, P<0.05) and 65 years or older (=0.07, P<0.05). Being Non-Hispanic White was positively associated with depression among 50-64 years old (=0.07, P<0.001) and 65 years or older (=0.08, P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Age-tailored education on determining accurate and reliable information shared via SNS is needed to reduce depressive symptoms.

The confinement of the population into their homes as a result of COVID-19 has entailed a notable increase in the consumption of diverse media. This exploratory study aimed to examine how the increase in media consumption was related to subjective happiness and psychological well-being. For this purpose, a questionnaire was administered to a sample of Spanish adults (n = 249; 53.8% women; aged between 18 and 75, Mage = 42.06, SD = 12.37) to assess their consumption of different media before and during confinement. Moreover, participants were evaluated for hedonic, eudaimonic, social, and experienced happiness by using the Pemberton Happiness Index (PHI). The results underlined the great increase in the consumption of TV for entertainment and social networking sites (SNS) during confinement. Furthermore, it was found that higher consumption was negatively correlated with the level of happiness, so that, people who reported greater well-being, both subjective and psychological, spent less time watching TV and using SNS. In contrast, no association was found between the level of happiness and the consumption of news (regardless of the media) and radio. Therefore, it seems that far from cultivating greater happiness, those who engaged in heavy consumption of TV entertainment and SNS during confinement were less happy than those who did so more moderately and spent more time using other media or performing other activities.

How are social media used to manage personal and intimate relations, in particular, friendships? Can these interactions be better understood through the dynamics of personal life? This article aims to answer these questions through the lens of personal life, together with concepts such as relationality, memory, biography and imaginary. Drawing on qualitative data from 30 in-depth interviews, in which Portuguese men and women were invited to describe their personal communities, it explores how relationships with friends are managed with the help of Facebook. Findings show, on a first level, many commonalities with what has been reported in the literature about social media uses, namely, the importance of social and interactional contexts in understanding the relationship between people and the media. However, a deeper level of analysis reveals that these Facebook interactions are also rooted in important features of contemporary personal life, such as an imperative of a relational continuum, [i.e.], a norm that pushes individuals to be in permanent relationships with others, with social media and social networking sites (SNS) providing up-to-date technological affordances to make that possible.

The present study investigates the role of attentional style as a moderator variable between temporal perspective and social network addiction, since little is known about users’ cognitive variables involved in this kind of addictive behavior. To achieve this goal, a sample of 186 volunteers and anonymous social networking sites users (M = 34%; F = 66%; Mage = 22.54 years; SD = 3.94; range: 18 ÷ 45 years) participated in a cross-sectional study. All participants filled out self-report instruments measuring temporal perspective, internal vs. external attentional style, and social network addiction. The results align with the previous literature and show that present fatalistic and past negative time orientations are associated with social network addiction, whereas the future is a negative precursor. Moreover, a four-step hierarchical regression analysis showed that internal attentional style is a significant moderator of the relationship between high levels of temporal perspective and a high level of social network addiction. This result suggests that social network-addicted users are oriented toward internal stimuli such as their intrusive thoughts or feelings and that social network addiction is similar to obsessive compulsive disorders, depression, or anxiety. Despite its limitations, the present study could contribute to the efforts of clinicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, teachers, and all those who seek to combat social network addiction in developing treatment programs to reduce its harmful effects.

The development of technology and culinary tourism has led to the high enthusiasm of social media users to bring up various Instagram culinary accounts that promote food. Food recommendations provided by food bloggers can be information, references in choosing food. The average duration of social media usage in Indonesia in 2018 is 3 hours 23 minutes a day. Exposure to food information on Social media instagram raises problems in choosing foods for students who are not concerned with the nutritional content of food that causes changes in eating behavior. This study aims to analyze the relationship of the duration of social media Instagram usage and student's eating behavior in University of Sumatera Utara. This study was an observational study using a cross-sectional design. The population in this study were undergraduate students at University of Sumatera Utara, with sample of 344 students. The data collection tool uses a questionnaire. Bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square statistical test. The results showed that the duration of social media Instagram usage among respondents was categorized high (≥3 hours / day) as much as 55.8 percent. Bivariate analysis shows that there is a significant relationship of the duration of social media Instagram and eating behavior (p <0.05). Students are expected to be able to limit themselves in using social media Instagram and are advised to consume balanced food. We recommend that the media such as Instagram culinary accounts can insert health messages as a food reference.

Background: There is paucity of data about arterial wall characteristics of the smallest and largest caliber cerebral vessels. Determining the relationship between the lumen and the wall might shed new insights into cerebral artery remodeling. Objective: To test the hypotheses that arteries with larger luminal diameters have a thinner wall and that arteries with the smallest lumina have thicker walls. Methods: Cross-sectional segments from large arteries (N=1392) were obtained from the circle of Willis in 196 autopsied brains (mean age 55 ± 17 yrs, 39% with hypertension, 15% with diabetes and 20% with dyslipidemia). Lumen diameter, stenosis percentage, and thicknesses of intima, media, and adventitia were calculated in digital microphotography after staining. Atheromas and internal elastic lamina (IEL) disruption were rated visually. Arteries were categorized into the top 5% (“dilated”) and bottom 5% (“narrowed”) of the luminal diameters, as well as an intermediate category (90% of sample as reference). We used logistic regression to obtain the odds of association (OR, 95% CI) after adjusting for demographic and vascular variables. Results: Narrowed arteries were more frequently found in men (OR 2.7, 95%CI 1.3-5.9) and with dyslipidemia (4.2, 1.6-11.1) while dilated arteries were more frequently found in women (5.6, 2.2-14.0), in smokers (2.6, 1.0-6.5) and those with prior MI (7.7, 1.2-48.7). Narrowed arteries were more likely to have atheromas (20.8, 4.8-90.3), greater luminal stenosis (per %, 1.1, 1.1-1.2), thicker vessel walls (1.3, 1.2-1.4), but thinner medias (0.9, 0.8-1.0). Conversely, larger arteries exhibited less IEL disruption (0.3, 0.1-0.9), atheromas (0.34, 0.1-0.9) and stenosis (0.8, 0.8-0.9), their walls were thinner (0.8, 0.8-0.9) but the media was thicker (1.1, 1.1-1.2). Conclusions: Narrowed cerebral arteries were more likely to have atheromas while dilated arteries had thinner walls and were more frequent in subjects with prior MI. These findings suggest that both extremes of the arterial spectrum might be differentially related with vascular disease, underscoring the need to revisit whether standard preventive measures for vascular disease are equally effective in patients harboring such disparate arterial phenotypes.

Background: Deliberate self-harm (DSH) occurs with high frequency among clinical and nonclinical youth populations. Although depression has been consistently linked with the behavior, not all depressed individuals engage in DSH. Aims: The current study examined maladaptive coping strategies (i.e., self-blame, distancing, and self-isolation) as mediators between depression and DSH among undergraduate students. Methods: 202 students from undergraduate psychology courses at a private university in Southern California (77.7% women) completed anonymous self-report measures. Results: A hierarchical regression model found no differences in DSH history across demographic variables. Among coping variables, self-isolation alone was significantly related to DSH. A full meditational model was supported: Depressive symptoms were significantly related to DSH, but adding self-isolation to the model rendered the relationship nonsignificant. Limitations: The cross-sectional study design prevents determination of whether a casual relation exists between self-isolation and DSH, and obscures the direction of that relationship. Conclusions: Results suggest targeting self-isolation as a means of DSH prevention and intervention among nonclinical, youth populations.

Abstract. Previous research suggests that parenting style influences the development of the needs for achievement, power, and affiliation. The present study investigated the relationship between parenting style and another important motive disposition – the need for autonomy – in a sample of Singapore university students ( N = 97, 69% female), using a cross-sectional and retrospective design. It was predicted that an authoritative perceived parenting style would relate positively to the implicit need for autonomy ( nAut), the explicit need for autonomy ( sanAut), and the congruence between these two motive dispositions. Authoritative maternal parenting was found to positively associate with sanAut, while maternal parenting was not found to associate with nAut, or with nAut/ sanAut congruence. Paternal parenting was not associated with any of the dependent variables.
