This article reviews the strategies used in three Ukrainian translations of George Bernard Shaw’s play «Pygmalion» focusing upon different approaches to representing the sociolect Cockney. Two of the translations (done by M. Pavlov and O.Mokrovolskiy) resort to surzhyk — a mixed Ukrainian-Russian vernacular, thus employing the strategy of domestication, while the third, and the latest, one (done by T. Nekriach and N. Ferens in collaboration, with the general editing of T. Nekriach) rejects surzhyk in principle, proceeding from the idea that cockney is not a contamination of two languages but a socially and culturally marked set of deviations from the norm within one language. The latter translation unites foreignization in indicating the time and place of action and domestication in consistent using the Ukrainian supradialectal popular parlance, which is termed ad hoc the «harmonizing strategy» in the article. Cockney as a specific ethnosociolect has been researched in the translation perspective in the works of I. Akopyan, V. Komissarov, O. Rebriy, T. Nekriach, A. Hughes, P. Trudgill etc., which form the theoretical foundation of the present article. The aim of the article is to study and systematize the optimal strategies and tactics of reproducing Cockney in the available Ukrainian translations of «Pygmalion». The principal method of research is the comparative translation analysis, which allows to evaluate the gains and losses in employing a particular strategy in order to achieve a faithful translation. The topicality of the research is accounted for by the growing interest on the part of both practical translators and translation scholars in the appropriate handling of translation strategies and tactics within one text in order to reveal the author’s intent to the full with the retaining of the distinguishing features of the form. Special attention is paid to the specific «double» nature of drama works which requires taking into account the “pronounceability” of cues in translation. It is argued that M. Pavlov and T. Nekriach/N. Ferens take this parameter into account, translating «for stage», whereas O.Mokrovolskiy translates «for page» only, which results in his alternatives for Cockney representation being understood visually, not audially. The research prospects are seen in applying the proposed methodology to the study of recent Ukrainian translations of fiction in comparison with the previous ones in order to survey the dynamics and effectiveness of applying various translation strategies and tactics in reproducing a particular language or cultural phenomenon used in the original text.

Idioms in Childhood Memories: (Dis)continuities in Portuguese Translations. My study aims to present a comparative translation analysis of the phraseological units in Romanian and European Portuguese and is based on the two Portuguese translations of Amintiri din copilărie (Recordações de infância) by Ion Creangă. Relying on the concept of equivalence – a key element in translation studies and comparative phraseology, debated and contested to the same extent – I propose an analysis of phraseological units both from an interlinguistic and an intralinguistic perspective, as well as a classification of translation solutions according to the types of equivalence proposed by Corpas Pastor (2001). At the same time, the identification of a certain type of equivalence leads us to an analysis of the translation strategies used. In this way, I note a strong connection between translation strategies and the types of equivalence between the two languages. The similarities and the differences between the translation solutions analyzed in the two Portuguese texts highlight the characteristics of the original text, as well as the translators’ choices. This essay discusses problems pertaining to the disappearance of the language of the original text in the case of literary translation. After a reminder of recent criticism directed against ethnocentric translation strategies, the question is raised of the theoretical promises of alternative strategies. The text examines the different ways in which the relations between language and culture are theorized, taking two lines of inquiry that have strongly infl uenced contemporary translation theory: that of German Romanticism and that of Walter Benjamin.

The article considers the problem of reflecting the picture of the world of English social dystopia and its moral and ethical component in the author’s idiosyncrasy, as well as ways of its reproduction in modern translation into Ukrainian. The urgency of this issue is dictated by the dynamism and variability of society, the processes of globalization and integration of states and nations, the need to find a common language in intercultural communication, solving common problems, finding compromises through faithful cross-cultural communication, interaction and cooperation. Within the framework of the research a comprehensive translation analysis was made, which allowed to outline the concepts related to the conceptual picture of the world and moral and ethical discourse of the dystopian novel, to find out and compare the features of authorial and translational transferring of the conceptual picture of the world in moral and ethical discourse in Ukrainian translation, as well as to characterize its tactical and strategic basis and translation operations. To reproduce the culturologically complicated, but conceptually important components of the picture of the world in the dystopian novel, it is necessary to adhere to the principles of “flexibility” and “combinatoriality” in the selection of translation operations for faithful rendering of these components. It is established that the correctness and faithfulness of rendering of the conceptual picture of the world in the dystopian novel is possible due to the holistic-situational perception and translation of the original text, wide subject and rich background knowledge of the translator, his/her creative intuition, pragmatic adaptation of the source text using logical and semantic, cross-cultural and occasional ways of solving the problem and adherence to an objective tactical and strategic approach in translation.

Abstract In translator training, the process of planning and implementing the teaching process and the design of teaching materials should be dynamic and flexible. With the future purpose to design teaching materials for idiom translation, this study proposes to explore those characteristics of idioms which might cause difficulties when translating them and some of the various classifications of idioms. Some of the relevant factors which might determine the appropriateness and acceptability of idiom translation and some of the translation strategies recommended in the specialized literature will also be presented. We proposed to analyse the idiom-translating solutions and strategies which the literary translator of the novel “A Game of Thrones” chose while translating it into Hungarian. Our aim is to decide whether the novel can be an appropriate source for authentic teaching material. We chose this novel mainly because it has recently become very popular among students, it is rich in idioms, and we believe that different aspects of idiom typology and different strategies used in idiom translation can be exemplified, demonstrated, and practised with the help of different tasks based on the original text and its Hungarian translation.

This paper investigates the purpose of using certain translation strategies in the Romanian version of the novel Die Entdekkung von Amerika (1781) by Joachim Heinrich Campe, translated from German by the merchant and teacher Nicola Nicolau from Brașov and published at the Printing House of the University of Buda in 1816 with the title Descoperirea Americii. Starting from the skopus theory developed by Hans Vermeer, the purposes of producing the Romanian version are analysed, in comparison with those of writing the original text and of the translations in other languages. At the textual level, through the comparative analysis, strategies are highlighted, especially omissions and interpolations, which help to achieve the goals of the translator or the text. Thus, through the transfer between the source and the target culture, one can observe the maintenance of the pedagogical Enlightenment goals, of instructing the masses regarding moral virtues and historical and geographical knowledge, and the addition of the one of cultivating the Romanian language.

The article presents the results of the peculiarities and difficulties of the author's realia translation analysis, which create the nominative space of the unreal world of fantasy novels. The essence of the «quasi-realia» concept and their functional field within the literature of the fantasy genre is revealed. As is known, in the field of translation of fiction it is especially difficult to convey the specific units of the original text, which denote atypical, nationally and culturally marked concepts – realia that are obscure or completely unknown within the linguistic culture of the target audience. However, if some additional information and reference sources can be used for the translation of ordinary realia, in the case of author’s realia, on the basis of which a completely new fantasy world is created and depicted, the translator faces a task of a double complexity – to reproduce not only the plot, style and author’s intentions, but also completely build the whole onomasticon of unreal space by means of the language of translation so that it appears in the imagination of the target readership as detailed, alive and connotatively rich as it appears in the English one. In view of this, the main focus in this work is made on the definition and analysis of translation inaccuracies made in the transmission of a number of fantasy quasi-realia. The study presented in the article is based on the classification and substantiation of inaccuracies in the transfer of quasi-real lexical units in the Ukrainian translation of the world-famous series of fantasy novels «А Song of Ice and Fire» by George R.R. Martin, made by Natalia Tysovs’ka and published by the publishing house «KM-Books». The identified inaccuracies are correlated with inappropriately used translation transformations, in particular lexical and lexical-semantic changes of the original quasi-realia, the use of which led, for example, to the loss of the connotative component of original units, complicating or distorting their plan of content, superimposing real-world names on objects and phenomena of unreal space, as well as violations of the general logic and systematic transmission of quasi-realia, typical in the analyzed world.

The article covers the stylistics of the work “Exercices de style” by the French writer Raymond Queneau and the translation of this work into Lithuanian. Through the analysis of translations into Italian and English as well, the article investigates the distinctive feature of Queneau’s texts – how they play with various language tools. The article distinguishes and discusses the play of literary devices (these are figures of style and rhetoric), the play of linguistic devices (grammatical tenses, barbarisms, neologisms), the play of language registers (colloquial language, jargon), the play of genres and discourses, and the play of narrative techniques. While playing with the language, the author seeks to entertain the reader – the exercises are rich in various elements of comedy, parody and irony. It is not possible to systematically apply one translation strategy to translate this work, therefore the translator Akvilė Melkūnaitė focused on conveying the logic of Queneau’s rules, making the translation strategies related to semantic and stylistic translation of the text diverse and successful, while the complicated conveying of cultural realia (e.g. jargon) is offset by other means of translation.

Verbs of perception include sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch, of which zhijian belongs to sight is very common in literary works, and its semantic meaning also begins to change with the development of time. Based on the original text and two translated versions of the Water Margin, this paper makes a comparative analysis of the translation strategies of zhijian on the basis that Chinese emphasizes subjective consciousness and the mixed consciousness of subjectivity and objectivity, while English stresses objective consciousness with a clear boundary between subjectivity and objectivity. According to previous studies, this paper regroups the appearance of zhijian and divides it into two categories, namely zhijian at the beginning of a sentence and at the beginning of a minor sentence. On the basis of the context and the changing function of zhijian, that is, the function of being a verb and being a discourse marker, it can be concluded that as the meaning of a verb, the real action, the meaning of zhijian is expressed by “seeing”, so translators usually adopt literal translation; while as a discourse marker, it is no longer the main component of sentence structure, but to highlight the following information, translators will adopt deletion, conversion and retaining. It can be seen that translators often need to convert Chinese characterized by subjective consciousness into English dominated by objective consciousness, thus conforming to various meaning of zhijian.

The article aims at presenting a complex model of the nature documentary AVT (audiovisual translation) analysis. Lambert – van Gorp’s scheme and V. Komissarov’s complex model are widely used and applied to analyzing translation. Those two models make up the basis of AVT analysis. In accordance with Lambert – van Gorp’s scheme, the preliminary data, macro-level, micro-level and systemic context of the nature documentary AVT are studied. V. Komissarov’s five-level equivalence model is also implemented in a complex model of the nature documentary AVT analysis, that model analyzes the equivalence of translation of an audiovisual work at every level and suggests translation strategies to achieve it. The article focuses on the fact that when analyzing the linguistic component of the AVT of a documentary film, it is impossible to negate the audiovisual component. In that regard, audiovisual components and how to translate them into the language of the host country are considered. The audiovisual component implies four codes: music, sound, iconographic and mobility, which are meticulously studied in the article. Following the research the author undertakes the complex model of the wild nature documentary AVT analysis.
