PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to show how early planned PR efforts at the British Family Planning Association [FPA] resulted in an epoch-making television appearance in November 1955, tessellating with current methodological debates in the history of PR.Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses a qualitative, micro-history approach and original archival document research conducted at Wellcome Collection, London and the BBC Written Archives Centre, Caversham, to reconstruct early PR activity at the FPA. It intercedes in debates on historiography, the diversification of the history of PR and the concepts of mediatization and advocacy in historical contexts.FindingsAttaining broadcast coverage for birth control issues was historically difficult and was made more so by Marie Stopes. The subject was commonly packaged into the less problematic issues of population and infertility. The FPA achieved explicit television coverage in 1955 after establishing a focussed PR plan to stage and exploit a silver jubilee event. This vindicated the FPA's mission, validated service users and created broadcast opportunities.Research limitations/implicationsResearch is limited by temporal scope (1870s–1950s), and reliance on document sources, footage of television programmes being unavailable. This paper has implications for the history of PR, contributing to the diversification of the field by suggesting an original approach to the intersection of public relations and social change.Originality/valueThis paper surfaces overlooked primary sources and is the first account of how birth control appeared as a topic on early British broadcast media.

Was the United Kingdom's policy of pushing for the return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar following ethnic cleansing in 2017 realistic? This article explores the United Kingdom’s response to the Rohingya Crisis which began in August 2017, resulting in the ethnic cleansing of 600,000 Rohingya Muslims in the first nine weeks of violence, with a minimum of 6,700 people being killed in the process. The United Kingdom reacted with condemnation, and began immediately calling for the safe return of refugees who had fled the violence, to their homes in Rakhine state, Myanmar. Using the testimony from Mark Field MP, Minister for Asia, in a Foreign Affairs Committee meeting, this essay assesses this policy of pushing for the return of the Rohingya to their homes. Using primary sources available to Britain at the time its policy was formed, this essay argues that Britain’s approach was not only unrealistic with regards to providing an environment in which Rohingya refugees would be provided safety, but also in relation to Burmese authorities’ desires to take back Rohingya refugees. Myanmar’s campaign of ethnic cleansing intentionally created the environment in which either the Rohingya would never return, or they would return to state-controlled concentration camps. Secondary material expires the history of violent state policies against the Rohingya in Myanmar, and Britain’s policy is shown to not only be unworkable due to such policies, but would actively endanger those refugees who chose to return. Azji Marka Fielda, członka parlamentu, Komitet ds.

“Never offer to the rich /and may the poor never lack” These verses by Martín Fierro -a masterpiece of Argentine gaucho narrative- represent the Monte de Piedad in Buenos Aires and its development. In a way, they essentialize the social function of this institution that provides credit to the underprivileged sectors of society. Besides, this affirmation allows to identify its author, José Hernández, as a member of the entity’s Board of Directors and a tenacious defender of its continuity. This article is based on the antecedents of the pledge credit and the role played by the native montepíos in the mid-19th century. Its focused in the study of the origin and trajectory of Monte de Piedad in Buenos Aires, as an institution which alleviated the hardships of the vulnerable sectors, both natives and immigrants, and prevented them from being victims of usury. Both macro and micro perspectives converge in this analysis. Firstly, the argentine economic and financial situation is taken into account to get to Buenos Aires’ province evaluation. Secondly, the history of this entity’s social function is examined since it was founded in 1877 (under the Bank of the Province of Buenos Aires), to its incorporation a decade later into the municipal patrimony and its conversion into the Municipal Bank of Loans, in 1904.The article starts with a bibliographic review of this particular subject. The proposed objective is achieved by analyzing diverse primary sources (Minutes Books, Memories and balances, Organic Letters, Institution Regulations, Journal of Sessions of the Buenos Aires Legislature and the Deliberative Council of the city of Buenos Aires) as well as the main periodical publications of the time.

The poor survival rate of primary sources for the history of Irish women in the early modern period is mitigated by the sophistication with which extant sources are now being analysed. When re-examined without reference to the demands of the traditional historical grand narrative, when each text itself is permitted to guide its own interrogation, previously undervalued texts are revealed to be insightful of individual existential experience. The memoir of eighteenth-century Dorothea Herbert, hitherto much ignored due to the authors mental illness, is becoming increasingly respected not just for its historic evidential value but for the revelations it contains of a distressed individuals use of literature to manage her circumstances. The interpretive tools deployed on such a text by different research specialisms necessarily lead to divergent conclusions; this in turn may lead to creative re-imagining of history although they cannot all equally reflect what was likely to have been the lived reality of the original author.

The relevance of the study is due to the fact that the subject of the article is the question of who was the real prototype of the Chekist Sutulov in Prishvin’s novel “Tsar’s road”, which has not yet been considered in the history of foreign affairs. It is shown that in Russian literature it is difficult to find master of the pen, whose work would be to the same extent conditioned by the influence of the ideological and political context. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time an attempt was made to show how, through the artistic image of the Chekist Sutulov, one of the main characters of the novel “Tsar’s Road”, Prishvin seeks to reflect the ideo-logical and political attitudes, characteristic features of behavior, style of thinking and speech of Stalin. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the 18-volume “Diary” of the writer, which was not previously published due to censorship restrictions, which became available to the reader only in the post-Soviet period. It is shown that, through the artistic image of Sutulov, Prishvin gives his personal assessment of Stalin’s role in the development of the state, striving to artistically faithfully and truthfully reflect the characteristic features of that atmosphere of economic, political and spiritual super-tension in which Soviet society lived in the 1930s on the eve of the Great Patriotic War.

Based on historiography and primary sources, this is a reconstruction of the history behind the intentions of Meilė Lukšienė (1913–2009), a literary scholar and a Lithuanian pedagogy researcher, to publish the works by Franciszek Ksawery Michał Bohusz SJ (1746–1820). The methods of publication chosen by Meilė Lukšienė are briefly discussed. Bohusz wrote in Polish, yet Lukšienė maintained that the translation of his texts had to be published as a source important to the development of Lithuanian culture. It was not found that Lukšienė had deliberated the possibility of publishing the texts in their original language. The research suggests that in Lithuanian historiography, the genesis of the publication of Bohusz’s texts can be associated with the translation into Lithuanian of the general Lithuanian school visitation reports from 1803 that Lukšienė had prepared for publication in 1966 but which were never released. She planned to publish a translation of Bohusz’s study O początkach narodu i języka litewskiego (1808; On the Beginning of the Lithuanian Nation and Language). It is a work that has not lost its importance to the studies on nineteenth-century Lithuanian history and cultural development. Lukšienė compiled a publishing proposal featuring a collection of Bohusz’s relevant texts. There were intentions to publish his texts, already prepared to be released, as a separate book in the series ‘Library of Lithuanian Studies’ (Lith. Lituanistinė biblioteka). The Vaga Publishing House had been publishing this series of works related to Lithuanian studies since 1966. Lukšienė presented her proposals to publish the collection of Bohusz’s texts to the Vaga Publishing House three times (in around 1973, 1978, and 1987). None of these attempts drew the publisher’s attention. It is presumed that Lukšienė’s ideological attitudes, deemed unacceptable to the Soviet regime, influenced directly the position held by the Vaga Publishing House. It cannot be dismissed that Bohusz as the author of the proposed texts could have also affected the publisher’s position, as a negative attitude towards him, both as a personality and his works, was formed in the Soviet years. The unsuccessful attempts of Lukšienė to incorporate Bohusz’s relevant texts into Lithuanian historiography should be viewed as an outcome of the ideologisation of cultural life by the Soviet regime. The history of Lukšienė’s unrealised idea is an informative source of data for research into the situation of the humanities in the Soviet period.

The article is dedicated to Heorhiy H. Shevel, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Soviet Ukraine from August of 1970 to November of 1980.The authors presented sincere recollections about this well known person, under whose leadership they began their diplomatic service that lasted for several decades. The decision to share those memories with readers of Diplomatic Ukraine was prompted by the fact that on May 9 this year was Mr. Shevel`s 100 anniversary. Unfortunately, neither the researchers of the history of Ukrainian diplomacy, nor those in charge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Diplomatic Academy paid the necessary tribute to this event. The authors of the article focus on the fact that with no previous experience in foreign policy matters Mr. Shevel managed in the conditions of a totalitarian Soviet system to realize important ideas in the interests of the Ukrainian diplomatic service and its development. From the very start of his duties as Minister of Foreign Affairs he undertook many practical steps to promote and improve the professional skills of his subordinates, to ensure their perfect command of foreign languages and to provide the Ministry`s staff and Ukraine`s permanent missions at the United Nations in New York, UNESCO in Paris and at other international organizations with a skilled personnel. Moreover, despite essential dependence on the policy of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Shevel also succeeded in ensuring more visible results of participation of the Ukrainian SSR in the activities of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and in the International Labour Organization. During his term as Minister for Foreign Affairs, representatives of the Ukrainian SSR were elected 37 times to the governing bodies of various international organizations, their sessions and conferences. As an evidence of substantial resurgence of Ukrainian diplomacy of the said period is the fact that the Ukrainian SSR also signed and ratified 64 multilateral international documents. Minister Shevel also paid particular attention to establishing Ukraine`s image abroad as one of the original members of the United Nations, by promoting its achievements in scientific, cultural and humanitarian fields, as well as to strengthening ties with Ukrainian communities in various foreign countries. This very important component of its work the Ministry of Foreign Affairs accomplished in close cooperation with two public organizations – the Society for ties with Ukrainians abroad (Society Ukraina) and the Ukrainian Society for friendship and cultural relations with foreign countries. Minister H. Shevel was also the initiator of the construction in Kyiv of several buildings to locate Consulates–General of Eastern-European states. Nowadays, these buildings are used by diplomatic missions of respective foreign states accredited in independent Ukraine. The authors of the reviewed article are confident that despite various fabricated and often unfounded conclusions about the Ukrainian diplomacy of the Soviet period the irrefutable fact is that during Minister Shevel`s years it acquired and strengthened the necessary practical experience and professional diplomatic skills. Therefore, they support as indisputable the conclusion made several years ago by one of the researchers of the history of National diplomacy that “it would be incorrect to consider the 1970s of the past century as such that passed off in vain for the Ukrainian foreign-policy office”.30 years have passed since the untimely death of Heorhiy H. Shevel on July 17, 1989. Being a man of his times and performing highly responsible duties of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in actually limited framework, he was at the same time a peculiar and extraordinary personality. And as such a figure he will always remain in the memory of all who knew him well and had the opportunity to work under his management. Because memory, emphasize the authors of the noted article, means first and foremost the ability not to forget the past. And this, they remark, is what the present generation of Ukrainian diplomats must keep in view and never forget. Keywords: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ukrainian diplomacy, foreign policy, international organizations, diplomatic service, memory.

In the Russian historical science, there is practically no research on the unified scientific and land issues. We can find the issue under consideration in works related to agricultural, economic, and other issues. However, as you know, most of them were prepared during the Soviet period. Therefore, in most cases, there is one-sidedness in the analysis, analysis and evaluation of historical works. Due to the disappearance of the traditional management system, the proclamation of the Kazakh land at the expense of state property, in this regard, the influx of external tributaries, the cutting off of millions of acres of land, its basis became water, steering, deer, and deer, and the Kazakhs themselves were displaced to the saline, tast regions, and these conditions of life are tied to the Land. This article describes the current issues of the history of the Earth in the socio-political views of Alash figures.

Isaac Newton’s Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended, published in 1728, one year after the great man’s death, unleashed a storm of controversy. And for good reason. The book presents a drastically revised timeline for ancient civilizations, contracting Greek history by five hundred years and Egypt’s by a millennium. This book tells the story of how one of the most celebrated figures in the history of mathematics, optics, and mechanics came to apply his unique ways of thinking to problems of history, theology, and mythology, and of how his radical ideas produced an uproar that reverberated in Europe’s learned circles throughout the eighteenth century and beyond. The book reveals the manner in which Newton strove for nearly half a century to rectify universal history by reading ancient texts through the lens of astronomy, and to create a tight theoretical system for interpreting the evolution of civilization on the basis of population dynamics. It was during Newton’s earliest years at Cambridge that he developed the core of his singular method for generating and working with trustworthy knowledge, which he applied to his study of the past with the same rigor he brought to his work in physics and mathematics. Drawing extensively on Newton’s unpublished papers and a host of other primary sources, the book reconciles Isaac Newton the rational scientist with Newton the natural philosopher, alchemist, theologian, and chronologist of ancient history.
