This study was a need analysis study as a part of the research and development of instructional materials for English for Business (EFB) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Magelang. This study was aimed at finding the students’ needs on their EFB course in terms of their personal characteristics, English proficiency assumption, learning motivation, and personal interest in their learning English. This study was conducted in a qualitative study that involved the nature of the qualitative study in nature. The findings of the study indicated that (1) the students’ were adolescents that were ready and conscious to get the lesson, (2) the students felt that they did not have good English mastery, (3) the students’ motivation in learning individually was not as high as learning in groups though they realized that they needed to master the target language, and (4) the students’ preferred to have more topics on Islamic values and functions in English and teacher’s roles are planner, information provider, and resource developer.

This research was aimed at analyzing the type of English skills needed by the students of Islamic Banking (Perbankan Syariah) in IAIN Metro and figuring out the materials relevant to their needs. This was a qualitative study involving 25 students and 20 alumni who were working or had ever worked in the banks or BMTs. The data were obtained by employing interviews, questionnaires, documentation, and then analyzed by using Miles and Huberman model. The findings reveal that most of the students have less skill in English. However, the language skill that is needed at most by the students is speaking skill as the communicative skill and vocabulary as the language skill. It is also discovered that there are some problems, such as limited references, lack of supporting facilities, and learning duration that are encountered by both lecturers and the students. Then, referring to their needs, the materials do not yet accommodate the content focus in which the students can learn English related to banking issues. This research recommends that the syllabus should be revised and English should be taught in an integrative approach.

English for specific purposes (ESP) have different needs of English language use. These needs will be the fundamental indicators to develop appropriate ESP syllabus. In order to find those needs, a need analysis research is necessary to conduct. This qualitative study addresses the result of ESP needs analysis for 95 Informatics Engineering of Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo students. Brief reviews of ESP, needs analysis, and current learners’ situation of ESP classroom for Informatics Engineering are described as theoretical frameworks. A needs analysis questionnaire is utilized as an approach to find specific needs and to evaluate the current class situation. The results address 10 areas of English language use for Informatics Engineering major.

This paper explores the relationship between education and labour market positioning in The Hague, a Dutch city with a unique labour market. One of the main minority groups, Turkish-Dutch, is the focus in this qualitative study on higher educated minorities and their labour market success. Interviews reveal that the obstacles the respondents face are linked to discrimination and network limitation. The respondents perceive “personal characteristics” as the most important tool to overcoming the obstacles. Education does not only increase their professional skills, but also widens their networks. The Dutch education system facilitates the chances of minorities in higher education through the “layering” of degrees.

This study is aimed at describing lecturers’ strategies to internalize Islamic values and students’ response toward the strategies. This a descriptive-qualitative study. The participants were 40 students of English education program and 3 English lecturers. All participants were given questionnaire and 3 students and 3 lecturers were interviewed. The data showed that all lecturers did internalize the Islamic values such as aqidah, worship, and moral values in the English learning preparation, process, and evaluation. However, students requested that the lecturers should consistently became the role model, performed positive habit, and gave best learning service so that the impact of internalizing Islamic values would be significantly and positively received.

This study investigated multiple learning motivation aspects of Chinese university students in Macau majoring in Spanish and Portuguese. A mixed methods research was employed by using questionnaires and interviews. 181 learners (96 Portuguese and 85 Spanish majors) were surveyed about ten language-learning motivation dimensions by using a questionnaire. A subset of participants from questionnaires were later given follow-up interviews. Quantitative and qualitative data indicated that the students in these majors had strong intrinsic motivation but limited integrative motivation towards the target language community. Other motivational pull-factors were the heritage connection between the language and the place of study and interest in the pop-culture associated related to the target language. Students reported a decline in motivation during the middle years of study, however, Spanish students’ interest resurged by the end of year three. There was also a gender imbalance, suggesting that career-related aspects of motivations were stronger among males. The results also revealed that language learners had an ideal-self that was multilingual and cosmopolitan but did not aspire to integrate into a specific target-language community.

The course of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is supposed to prepare students for the professional sector, yet the course at IAIN Palopo in Indonesi is designed in general English without any professional input or assessment of the learner's needs. This research is motivated by the Communication and Islamic Broadcasting program students’ complaints of unsatisfaction with the course since it does not meet their needs. This research aims to examine the English needs of students studying in the communication and Islamic broadcasting program. The researchers used a mixed-methods strategy that incorporates both quantitative and qualitative research. The participants in this study were 60 undergraduates and 30 graduate students. Data was gathered through questionnaires and interviews. The data was then analyzed using the comprehensive concept of need analysis proposed by Dudley-Evans & St. John (1998). The results revealed that the majority of students learn English to help them advance in their careers. Their top priority in ESP is to improve their speaking skills, followed by listening, reading, and writing. Due to the repetitive learning method, inappropriate textbook, and short duration, according to the interview results, the students were also unsatisfied with the present ESP course.

This essay pretends to deep on how the process of making decisions in designing an ESP (English for Specific Purposes) course registered by three TESOL graduate students, structured by the author along with participants, a requirement of the Master of English Teaching for Speakers of Other Languages at University of Costa Rica (UCR).During the course the designers should help a group of UCR workers to communicate in English effectively with international students who want to study at UCR or those who were already participating in international programs. This study introduces data about the apprentices who benefit from this academic activity, tasks designed and taught, aswell as the evaluation and assessment used. Finally, it suggests some recommendations for those who may consider the option of designing an ESP course as an effective strategy to promote the use of the target language in a work context.

ABSTRACTThe current study revealed the communication needs of medical students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). Three approaches of Need Analysis (NA) were combined in this study; Target Situation Analysis (TSA), Presentation Situation Analysis (PSA), and Pedagogical Need Analysis (PNA). The questionnaires were circulated to medical students. The findings discovered that communication skill was considered important in EMP course. The medical students realized the importance of doctors’ communication in order to enhance better performance in their professional settings. ESP teachers are supposed to give a model of communication; Students also expected that the materials should be authentic. The materials design should have clear and coherent objectives to help the students achieving the communication goals. Moreover, students want ESP teaching put them as close as possible to the workplace situation.  ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kebutuhan materi pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris  komunikasi pada mahasiswa kedokteran di Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang.  Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah gabungan antara Target Situation Analysis (TSA), Presentation Situation Analysis (PSA), dan Pedagogical Need Analysis (PNA). Dari data yang diperoleh dalam penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa mahasiwa kedokteran merasa mata kuliah EMP (English for Medical Purposes) itu penting untuk menunjang karir dan profesi mereka. Maka dari itu para pengajar mata kuliah ESP (English for Specific Purposes) diharapkan bisa memberikan model-model materi pengajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk komunikasi yang otentik; yaitu materi yang tepat untuk mengasah ketrampilan mereka dalam komunikasi. This paper reports the results of need analysis of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for local tour guides in two villages in Buleleng regency. This research is a descriptive qualitative study involving 56 tour guides, in which 30 were based in Ambengan village and 26 others were posted in Sambangan village. There were three instruments applied to obtain the research data such as observation sheet, questionnaire, and interview guide. Findings from the observation showed that the two villages had waterfalls and terraced rice fields as the main potencies. Additionally, the questionnaire specifying the target need showed that both groups had low speaking skill (56.05%) even the rest of them (43.95%) understood English, but was not able to speak English at all. Furthermore, they all required oral English, speaking (69%) and listening (24.5%). Seen from learning need, they demanded conversation (90.5%) as the most important learning experience. The results from interview proved that 92.5% local guides had no academic background in English. From those findings, it can be summed up that they need contextual-based English learning to accomplish their jobs in a more professional way through non formal education.
