Difficulties in learning are caused by student study programs in mathematics education to solve problems in solving mathematics. The mistake was made by both male and female students. In the course, algebraic structure is one of the material that requires the right procedure in its completion. This research includes descriptive analysis with qualitative data analysis. Data collection was carried out by test and interview methods conducted twice, namely TPM 1 and TPM 2. Subjects were considered as 2 students from 35 students of class 2016, consisting of one male student and one female student. The student has high mathematical skills. Each research subject was interviewed regarding the results of his work at TPM 1. To find the credibility of the data, the second test was conducted, which means that this study uses time triangulation. Furthermore, the data were analyzed to determine the types of student errors according to Newman's analysis. Based on the results of the study, data obtained that all research subjects did not make mistakes, errors, errors and answer errors. However, all research subjects made a mistake in the process at TPM 1 or at TPM 2. The male student subject made a mistake because he did not know the right way to use the existing formula. Meanwhile, female student subjects made mistakes because they did not understand the concept of exponents and chaos amid mathematical operations.

AbstractI argue that the right choice of subject pool is intimately linked to the research question. At least within economics, students are often the perfect subject pool for answering some fundamental research questions. Student subject pools can provide an invaluable benchmark for investigating generalizability across different social groups or cultures.

The purpose of this study was to: (1) finding out the difficulties experienced by mathematics education students in solving geometric reasoning problems based on van Hiele's theory; (2) identifying the factors causing difficulties experienced by students in solving geometric problems based on van Hiele’s theory; and (3) determining the steps that need to be taken to overcome the students' difficulties in solving geometric reasoning problems based on van Hiele's theory in the Transformation Geometry Course. The students' difficulties in solving geometric reasoning problems based on van Hiele's levels will give an idea of the indicators of geometrical reasoning abilities that are still low, so that the right alternative solutions are obtained. This type of research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach.  The research subjects were 28 students who programed geometry transformation courses. The instrument in this study was a test instrument, namely geometric reasoning abilities of students as many as 5 questions consisting of 5 levels of ability, namely visualization, analysis, abstraction, formal deduction, and rigor. While the data analysis techniques in this study used descriptive analysis. Collecting data in this study used interview techniques and written tests. The results showed that from the five indicators of geometric reasoning ability, for the visualization level, there were 26 people who achieved the optimal score with a percentage of 92.9. Seen at the level of analysis still not reached optimally with a percentage of 21.4 or only 6 people who achieved the optimal score, while the level of abstraction, formal deduction, and rigor has not been achieved. Difficulties experienced by students at the level of analysis, abstraction, formal deduction, and rigor. The causal factors experienced by students based on the results of interviews obtained information that students have difficulty answering questions due to several things including; students have forgotten about the material being taught, when they learn they understand but are less interested in developing, feel unsatisfied so they expect concrete media, need to be trained in many questions, and follow up to students. From this information, an appropriate alternative is needed, for example using van Hiele's theory to familiarize students with reasoning skills.

Quantitative literacy is an important skill needed by individuals in solving problems with quantitative situations in daily life. Thus, this paper aimed to identify quantitative literacy in solving the PISA problem based on gender differences. This study used descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Research subjects in this study were two tenth-grade students in middle school. They were one male student and one female student who have the similar mathematical ability. Data were collected by giving the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) problem, especially mathematical literacy, and using the interview method. The research results showed that the quantitative literacy of male student in solving PISA problems is by using fewless symbols to represent time and incomplete algorithms and procedures. In comparison, the quantitative literacy of female student in solving PISA problems is by using a more detailed description, more mathematical operations, and solving the problem according to algorithms and procedures. Furthermore, both students have quantitative literacy aspects, including interpretation, calculation, representation, assumption, analysis, and communication skills. Therefore, the quantitative literacy ability of students can be used as a reference for teachers to determine the modeling activities conducted by students in solving the PISA problem.
