Lathe is a tool that rotates the work-piece about an axis of rotation to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation, facing, turning, with tools that are applied to the work-piece to create an object with symmetry about that axis.  There are several considerations that affect the lathe to work well, especially geometrical deviations that affect the quality degradation of the product in terms of shape and dimensions. One of the wear on the slide-way of the lathe can affect geometric aberrations. This paper discusses the design and manufacture of grinding tools to fix the lathes bed that can erode three slide-way planes in a single process to achieve flatness and square alignment with one another. The research method used is the experimental method by collecting the data needed to design the tool through literature study and direct observation to the lathe, then the data is processed to obtain the specification of the tool that will be designed by design method based on Verien Deutche Ingenieuer (VDI) 222 , the design result is then continued with the machining and fabrication process; before assembling, parts of the auxiliary equipment are tested in accordance with the design function indicator; the last stage is testing the tool as a whole to know the achievement of the tool against a predetermined goal. Based on the results of the grinding experiment on the three slideway planes with a feed depth of 0.03mm, the average flatness and alignment values are 0.02mm / 300mm and 0.07mm / 300mm, respectively. Based on the ISO 1708 standard on the tolerance of geometrical deviations, the grinding results have not allowed the tolerance. Still need more research about the influence of wear of grinding wheels to the grinding results.

The design processes and strategies applied to each architect in carrying out their design tasks are different. The stages in producing architectural work can be based on the theory of certain design methods, intuition or design experience from each architect. As an architect, it is mandatory to know the design process in accordance with existing methods. There are several variables in the design method according to Jones and Schmitt. And this study aims to find the variables most widely used by 8 architects in designing. Including the average of the variables it uses. The method used in this research is quantitative method with one way ANOVA (analysis of variant) as its statistical analysis, by examining the mean difference between the research objects. The literature study was used to obtain an analysis of the design process and the methods used by 4 well-known architects as their secondary empirical data source, while field observations in the form of direct interviews were carried out to obtain the reality of the design process for 4 local architects with various backgrounds and characteristics as well as different architectural works. The end result shows that the average level of architects in the use of research variables is not much different and the design process variables that are most often used by architects in carrying out architectural designs, are the clarity of the need for the design function, the use of the drawing system and the design results that are meaningful and logical.

China is now building the world’s largest single dish radio telescope in Guizhou province, which is called Five-hundred meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The main purpose of this paper is to present an effective dimensional design method on the six-cable driven parallel manipulator of FAST. Sensitivity design method is adopted for the six-cable driven parallel manipulator of FAST. Cable has the capability to bear tension but not compression, so that cable driven parallel manipulator may not be controlled as expected if tension of one cable is small or zero. Therefore, for dimensional design of the six-cable driven parallel manipulator, three functions to evaluate tension performance were proposed. The tension performance functions can reflect the uniformity of cable tension and controllability of the six-cable driven parallel manipulator. According to the sensitivity design method and tension performance evaluating functions, a set of optimized dimensional parameters is calculated for constructing the six-cable driven parallel manipulator of FAST. In order to verify the optimization design result, a similarity model of the six-cable driven parallel manipulator was set up in Beijing. A serial of experiments shows that tension performance of the six-cable driven parallel manipulator satisfies the system’s requirement. More importantly, it provides a theoretical reference for further study on dimensional design of a cable driven parallel manipulator with large span.

The evolution of cold recycling using bitumen stabilisation technology has been supported by progressive research initiatives and best practice guidelines. The first generic guidelines for bitumen stabilised materials (BSMs) were published only in 2002. These guidelines provided a generic approach for the analysis of foamed bitumen and bitumen emulsion technologies. From that point, bitumen stabilisation became the common term for the inclusion of either of the two bituminous binders. The TG2 2nd edition guideline of 2009 took a bold step recognising the shear properties of the bitumen stabilised material (BSM) as the key performance indicators. In addition, advancements in structural design and application of BSMs provided practitioners with robust guidelines. The subsequent decade has provided an opportunity to interrogate data from more than 300 BSM mix designs and 69 LTPP sections. The data have led to research developments including significant new performance properties of BSMs, refined mix design methods, and updated new pavement design methods. This includes an entire design process that has been updated with a streamlined mix design procedure and a new frontier curve for the pavement number design method, as well as a new mechanistic design function. It is anticipated that the research findings and implementation of the newly developed technology will lead to improved application in BSM technology.

Thin film patterning by a lift-off method is effective from the viewpoint of cost performance and environmental issues. As a solution to the problems of conventional lift-off methods, the inversely-tapered resist profile with interstice was proposed and its fundamental feasibility was experimenatally proved. The resist profile still needed to be designed properly to solve the problems completely, and therefore a design method was also suggested. The method presupposes that conditions of deposition process have been already determined. However, actually, the conditions relate closely to the design of resist profile and wrong conditions may result in undesirable or infeasible design result. This paper proposes an integrated design method of the thin film patterning process considering design of both resist profile and deposition conditions.

The fast moving consumer goods included a wide range of items. The basic characteristics of the fast moving consumer goods result in that the consumers’ buying habit is: simple, rapid, impulsive, emotional. In the trend of market segmentation, enterprises have to make the products respond quickly to design and manufacture under the premise of meeting functions. In the design process, designers find out design point by axiomatic design method, and then through a modular design, rapidly assemble the various elements thereby to design series of products with distinctive features in batch, so as to help enterprises to extend the product life cycle.

This paper adapted and extended the preliminary two-step wave rotor design method with another step of experimental validation so that it became a self-validating wave rotor design method with three steps. First, the analytic design based on unsteady pressure wave models was elucidated and adapted to a design function. It was quick and convenient for a first prediction of the wave rotor. Second, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was adapted so that it helped to adjust the first prediction. It provided detailed information of the wave rotor inner flow. Thirdly, an experimental method was proposed to complement the validation of the wave rotor design. This experimental method realized tracing the pressure waves and the flows in the wave rotor with measurement on pressure and temperature distributions. The critical point of the experiment is that the essential flow characteristics in the rotor were reflected by the measurements in the static ports. In all, the three steps compensated for each other in a global design procedure, and formed an applicable design method for generic cases.

at present, the product quality that tire building machine presses tire is not ideal. The phenomenon that the tread isn’t pressed solidly often appears. Through analysis, the main reasons of this problem are those the actual rolling curve doesn’t accord with ideal curve enough, and roller pressure is unstable, pressure fluctuations are large. Therefore, ensuring the basic structure of institution is unchanged, this paper adopts optimization technique to calculate the size of planar linkage institutions and determine the best design result. It makes the moving point from the planar linkage institutions accord with tire section curve best. The article cites example of the engineering design, demonstrating the superiority of the new design method fully.
