scholarly journals John Osborne’s Luther: An Islamic Interpretation for Boosting Human Fraternity

The fictional world John Osborne builds up in Luther (1961) dramatizes Martin Luther’s spiritual journey from rooted Catholicism to emerging Protestantism. Throughout the journey, Martin’s religious tendency varies according to the belief he adheres to. This paper examines if the aspects of the Christian doctrine Martin is fed with at first and the initiatives he undertakes later on can be reinterpreted through the lens of Islam. The study tries to prove that drama can be used as a platform that enhances religious and multicultural proximity rather than distance between the western world and the Muslim community. It analyzes the Christian tenets in Luther to demonstrate how the religious values embedded in Osborne’s representation can be brought close to the principles of the Islamic doctrine. Hence, another endeavour for boosting human fraternity is presented based on picking up a modern English drama that was written sixty years ago and analyzing some of its aspects from an Islamic perspective.

In today’s world where the former colonized are reshaping their relation with the colonizer, the concept of decolonizing or indigenizing education is widely discussed in postcolonial studies. Decolonizing/indigenizing education counters the western systems of knowledge’s hegemony over those of non-western systems of thought and requires the development of a new approach to education that keeps in view the indigenous societies’ socio-cultural and religious values and traditions. The Islamization of Knowledge undertaking maintains a similar approach, but additionally requires an Islamic perspective on knowledge. Among all western disciplines, English literature is arguably the most culturally charged and carries western value-laden ideas. This reality points to the need to look at it from Islamic perspectives. Based on this theoretical concept, this study seeks to establish the urgency and feasibility of Islamizing English (British) literary studies.

This article discusses the family as a priority object in da'wah. This is because every human being, must absorb the thoughts, teachings, and religious values that live in his/her family; the family is a miniature of the Islamic community and society. The family is also a logical continuation of the two family functions above, so the family institution itself is one of the determining factors for the strengths and weaknesses of the Muslim community as a whole. The existence of globalization has had a significant impact on society, including propaganda. Such as: loosening of family ties, weakening of moral ties as a result of all-round understanding, permissivenism (al-ibahiyyah) and understanding of hedonism that accompany modernism, and the shock of the soul that disturbs the peace and peace of family and household. So preaching in the family demands the actualization of Islamic systems and values in family life. In addition, in this article the author tries to put forward the main things that need to be considered in fostering Islamic families as the main pillars of da'wah. First, a matter of forming a family through marriage. Second, the education and the inculcation of religious values in the family. Third, the matter of upholding justice and gender equality. Because these three things affect the strength and resilience of Islamic families.

While there are vast disparities in size and population between Canada and Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), there are important commonalities between the two including, ethnic and religious diversity, and adherence to strong democratic principals. T&T’s Muslim community represents approximately 5% of the population and has been a strong fiber in the social fabric since 1845. The actions of a small number of citizens has however led to T&T being labelled as having the highest foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs) per capita in the western world. Trinidadians have also been the victims of international terrorism including 9/11 and the Westgate Shopping Mall attack in Kenya. These issues together with the evolving tactics of terror organizations such as ISIL, coupled with T&T being a target rich environment, places terrorism high on the national security agenda.

As a biological universal, it is easy to overlook the degree to which culture and religion shape how people sleep, and how quality sleep is conceptualized. In the Western world, sleep hygiene tips are important for an individual to get “a good night’s sleep”. Meanwhile, sleep is also important from an Islamic perspective, which, the Quran and Hadith discuss on its types, importance and quality practices. In modern sciences, sleep deprivation is regarded as a significant health issue, however from an Islamic point of view, long sleep hours alone do not determine the efficiency of sleep, but rather it depends on various other factors and follows the sleeping etiquettes of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This narrative review was conducted to highlight sleep from Islamic perspectives in relation to modern sciences. Selected articles discussing sleep from Islamic perspectives and modern sciences were reviewed and summarized. These articles were retrieved from searches of computerized databases and search engines using keywords “Sleep from Islamic perspective”, “Sleep in modern science”, “Sleep hygiene”, “Western world and sleep”, “Sleep deprivation” and “Quality sleep”. A number of six studies were selected (n=6). Analyses found that a productive Muslim sleep routine is divided into three parts; one-third, respectively, for Allah, ourselves and sleep. Sleep hygiene was emphasized and discussed from the Islamic perspectives and the relation with modern sciences: performing ablution and supplicate before sleep, could prepare the body for a deep sleep; dusting the bed before sleep, would get rid of insects that lead to scabies; turning-off lights before sleep to maintain dark environment, could prevent disruption to normal circadian rhythms; early bedtime and early wake-up time, would ensure adequate sleep thus lower the risk of getting chronic diseases; washing the hands after waking -up would get rid of germs accumulated during sleep; and, lying down on the right side is to prevent snoring and to avoid the heart under pressure of the right lung (if lying on the left side). People should not abandon sleep as an important requirement. What has been described in the Quran and Hadith are corresponded with sleep hygiene as identified by modern sleep scientists. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also stressed the importance of sleep for good health, and in the Quran, sleep is described as a blessing from Allah and stressed the importance of the alteration of night and day.
