Although the building sector builds and renovates objects, the construction industry is currently due for a digital renovation. In this paper, we provide insight into the status of BIM adoption in North Macedonia as a step towards the digital transformation of the construction industry. The presented review on the current stage of development, benefits, and barriers is followed with showcasing the possibilities for using BIM for the assessment of the energy performance of buildings through case studies. Furthermore, the results of the conducted survey on BIM awareness and the proposed national roadmap for BIM adoption are elaborated on.

The benefits of e-business have been widely promoted but the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector has lagged behind other sectors in the adoption of e-procurement. The prospective benefits for the AEC sector are suggested by the proven advantages of general e-procurement where adoption has been faster and deeper. However, several studies indicated that barely 20% of documentation is tendered electronically, suggesting there are barriers to e-procurement. In order to promote adoption of e-procurement in the AEC sector, it is important to establish the status of the industry and identify the drivers as well as barriers to e-procurement. This chapter provides a detailed discussion of the state of the industry and its drivers and barriers while ranking these according to its importance. It acts as a reference guide to allow those implementing e-procurement in construction to make informed decisions as to where to focus their efforts to achieve successful realisation incorporating the benefits and avoiding the pitfalls in the process. The chapter also provides some insight into the current state, trends, and future directions of e-procurement in the construction industry.

There is currently no common or standardized procedure for certification of the energy performance of buildings, as each EU Member State takes into account the specificities of its own construction sector when implementing the provisions of Directive 2010/31/EU. This usually depends on two features: the purpose of the building and the climate. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate the influence of the hydropower primary energy factor on assessing the energy performance of buildings. For this purpose, non-renewable primary energy factor values were analyzed regarding actual energy production and consumption data from 19 Lithuanian hydroelectric plants. The results of the studies show that the average value of the non-renewable primary energy factor of hydropower plants is 0.059.

The construction industry is an integral part of the economy, and there will be always demand for construction activities. All the time are being built all supermarkets, shopping malls, entertainment centers, and people periodically want to change their homes. Also technological developments would not make sense if there were no such sectors as construction. The study gives a general description of construction sector in Latvia and also gives an insight into the construction sector role in economics of Latvia in last five years.

Digital transformation is now impacting businesses in both the developed and developing worlds, and this chapter examines this phenomenon in the small business sector in Nigeria. Adopting an interpretivist philosophy, the methodology combines a survey of small business enterprises (SBEs) with in-depth case studies of three Nigerian companies. Ten critical influencing factors are identified, and a model (Engage-Deploy-Exploit-Transform – EDET) is developed and applied to the case studies to assess the status of digital transformation. The influencing factors provide a checklist for SBEs embarking on digital transformation projects, and the model can be used to assess progress and identify new opportunities for digital transformation at the business process level. The authors believe this to be a useful contribution to the growing literature in this field that can be used by both researchers and practitioners in similar developing-world contexts.

The rehabilitation and sustainable transformation of residential heritage of the Old City of Aleppo (Syria) is one of the most pressing issues to regain the livability of this city. This research paper aims to gain insight into the residents’ conditions and needs by studying/mapping/analyzing the status of the residential heritage and the interventions on it during the aftermath of the city’s devastation. It also intends to provide a better understanding of the residents’ attitude towards living in the Old City, their expectation for its reconstruction and transformation, and the difficulties they encountered in the process. In fact, in order to start a collective reconstruction and transformation process, it is important to understand the readiness of the inhabitants and their financial capabilities to engage in this process. A combination of research methods was used to explore the above-mentioned issues and their relation to the socio-cultural sustainability. These methods included: gathering data in the field (specifically, Al-Jalloum, Al-Farafra and Al-Aqaba, three neighborhoods in the Old City of Aleppo, were used as case studies), and setting up a questionnaire (Winter 2020) and conducting interviews (Summer 2021) with 39 returnees and their families. AutoCAD and Excel programs were used for data visualization. This research has highlighted the main problems and factors that have affected the interventions on courtyard houses in the Old City of Aleppo since 2012—the outbreak of the Syrian War in Aleppo City. Lack of funds and craftmanship, high costs and long bureaucratic procedures related to the enforcement of the regulations have been identified as the main causes that discouraged the residents to carry out repairs in a proper way.

In the absence of an explicit and specific theory, the management of production processes in construction is essentially based on a Taylorist view, based on the economic theory of production. Thus, given the particularities of construction, the plans developed are often unreal, with recurring delays and unforeseen circumstances during production. Thus, because of the importance and the latent need to develop a specific theory, this article uses a systematic literature review (SLR) to comprehend what has been developed and discuss the topic. The main objective is to answer the following research questions: 1) What is being proposed to develop a production theory applied to construction? 2) What is the approach used in the publications? 3) What can be proposed for the body of knowledge in question to fill gaps? Based on the results of the SLR, it was verified that the development of such a theory appears to be very incipient and not formalized in the publications, with inconclusive results and weak multidisciplinary cooperation. Furthermore, there are indications that authors associated with Lean Thinking may be leading research on production theory in construction since most of the publications have results that were conceptually based on Lean Construction principles. It is understood that the content of this article is relevant because it outlines the current stage of development of the theory and indicates possible paths to achievements.

The subject of this research is the political lexicon in the English language. The article examines the criteria fir determination of political lexicon, provides definitions of this term to various scholars, frames the definition of political lexicon, and highlights its peculiarities in the English language. The author also explores the question on the relationship between political lexicon and political (sociopolitical) terminology; defines the concept of “political term”; describes the main means and methods of enriching political lexicon in the English language. The following methods were applies in the course of study: general scientific method for collection of the existing literature on the topic; systematization and generalization for formulation of fundamental concepts of research; random sampling for selecting the examples; contextual analysis for determining the peculiarities of functionality of phrases within the system of English political lexicon and mass media; as well as translational analysis. The scientific novelty consists in the fact that this article allows establishing the status of political theme within the lexical system of English language, since for the current stage of development of linguistic a promising trend is the determination of morphogenetic linguistic phenomena. The author also describes the main means of enriching the lexicon on the example of research material, which allows reflecting the development trends of political lexicon in the modern English language.

Purpose This paper aims to present factors affecting the Indian construction organisations in adopting off-site construction (OSC) methods. Design/methodology/approach An existing readiness maturity model has been used to assess three large organisations in different parts of India. A case study methodology has been adopted in this paper to highlight critical issues in OSC adoption in India. Findings This paper presents three case studies and concludes the Indian construction sectors readiness to adopt the OSC methods. Through the case studies, different issues related to the adoption of OSC have been identified and highlighted for the Indian construction sector. Although the three companies are large, there are several small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME) operating in India's construction sector, and future research shall be needed to review these SMEs. Research limitations/implications This research study is broadly focused on developing and assessing an OSC readiness framework for Indian construction organisations. The research scope and the population for data collection are limited to large construction organisations in India only. Practical implications The proposed OSC readiness maturity model guides construction practitioners in India through a structured process to assess their OSC readiness in the market. This assessment enables them to evaluate and benchmark their processes through the strategic and operational phases. This research will add to the existing knowledge of OSC in India by mapping issues relevant to India's construction industry. The research has provided background on the status of OSC, the drivers and barriers affecting the implementation of OSC techniques in the Indian construction industry. Originality/value Through the three case studies, several factors related to the implementation of OSC methods have been identified and highlighted within the Indian construction sector. Although the model has been applied to the Indian construction sector, it can easily be modified to fit into other areas and similar dynamics and business conditions.

Abstract Introduction. The unwanted slowdown of the housing construction process, triggered by the coronavirus crisis, does not cancel the tasks set by the national project “Housing and the Urban Environment”. The practical analysis of the housing sector has confirmed that the economic recovery of the housing construction industry cannot be regarded as an outcome of inconsistent measures. The novelty of the approach lies in the identification of the most problematic development hurdles and their comprehensive overcoming in the context of digital transformation of residential development projects, which contributes to effective demand, optimizes the distribution of risk between construction work participants and expands the use of preventive mechanisms for the out-of-court settlement of commercial disputes arising in the construction sector. Materials and methods. A quick analysis of the current situation in the housing sector, including the one in the regions, has identified the most important factors hindering the growth of business activities in this industry. Methods of systems analysis, adjusted in terms of time and space, made it possible to apply situational analysis tools to the housing construction sector. Results. A repeated discussion of the reasons for the contraction of housing construction which is underway on discussion platforms of the Ministry of Construction of the Russian Federation, NOSTROY, RANEPA, MGSU, etc. has revealed that the comprehensive implementation of aggregated effects that accompany the transition to project funding is impossible without the implementation of the principle of “risk symmetry”, effective demand support, prevention of conflicts of interests between construction participants and the practical implementation of the potential of digital transformation of investment and construction processes in the project format at all stages of the life cycle of a construction project. Conclusions. The nurture of a qualitatively new digital environment in the housing sector will change not only its planning, controlling and expert functions, but also the evaluation and communication mechanisms, as it contributes to reduction of transaction and operational costs, boosts the efficiency and objectivity of construction control, increases trust and partnership solidarity, narrows the scope of litigation and reduces the number of bankruptcies, etc., thus, setting the stage for an accelerated recovery and growth of the housing construction.
