Plant mucilage is a renewable and cost-effective source of plant-based compounds that are biologically active, biodegradable, biocompatible, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly. Until recently, plant mucilage has been of interest mostly for technological purposes. This review examined both its traditional uses and potential modern applications in a new generation of health-promoting foods, as well as in cosmetics and biomaterials. We explored the nutritional, phytochemical, and pharmacological richness of plant mucilage, with a particular focus on its biological activity. We also highlighted areas where more research is needed in order to understand the full commercial potential of plant mucilage.

The complex program of health promotion for university students with disorders of adaptation processes was developed. The program includes application of dynamic, isometric and breathing exercises at working table during micro-pauses for amelioration of cerebral blood circulation. Increasing of resistance of organism to shortage of oxygen and normalization of vegetative functions. The application of massage of biologically active points applied during scheduled breaks is addressed to optimizing functional conditions of students. The implementation of complex of common developing exercises, application of health promoting running and rainy shower in the end of training exercise is oriented on increasing physical readiness and stimulating students' own adaptive possibilities.The approbation of originally developed program demonstrated its good efficiency in adjustment of deadaptation disorders occurring in the process of education. The results of study demonstrated that in boys and girls after three-months health promoting training neuro-psychic tension decreased, resistance to stress impact increased and anxiety lessened. Simultaneously, increasing of number of students with high level of adaptation to actual social conditions was observed. The amelioration of vegetative resistance of organisms of students was noted. The testing of physical readiness demonstrated that in students, after correcting exercises, muscular strength of wrists increased, velocity force capacities and indices of force endurance in control exercise "jump-rope" ameliorated and suppleness and static resistance of organism. The application of proposed means of health promotion promoted mobilization of workability of nervous cells and nervous system that is substantiated by the results of tapping-test.The application of health promotion program resulted in increasing of academic progress in studies of boys and girls up to 0.4-0.7 points. The obtained data was used to recommend for implementing in educational institutions the developed program of health promoting student youth and minimizing deadaptation disorders occurring in student social environment.

Abstract Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are linear semicrystalline polyesters produced naturally by a wide range of microorganisms for carbon and energy storage. PHAs can be used as replacements for petroleum-based polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) in many industrial applications due to their biodegradability, excellent barrier, mechanical, and thermal properties. The overall industrial applications of PHAs are still very limited due to the high production cost and high stiffness and brittleness. Therefore, new novel cost-effective production method must be considered for the new generation of PHAs. One approach is based on using different type feedstocks and biowastes including food byproducts and industrial and manufacturing wastes, can lead to more competitive and cost-effective PHAs products. Modification of PHAs with different function groups such as carboxylic, hydroxyl, amine, epoxy, etc. is also a relatively new approach to create new functional materials with different industrial applications. In addition, blending PHA with biodegradable materials such as polylactide (PLA), poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), starch, and distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) is another approach to address the drawbacks of PHAs and will be summarized in this chapter. A series of compatibilizers with different architectures were successfully synthesized and used to improve the compatibility and interfacial adhesion between PHAs and PCL. Finer morphology and significantly improvement in the mechanical properties of PHA/PCL blends were observed with a certain type of block compatibilizer. In addition, the improvement in the blend morphology and mechanical properties were found to be strongly influenced by the compatibilizer architecture.

AbstractGraphene-based coating is an emerging field that focuses on developing advanced coatings by exploiting new generation materials with superior properties. Researchers are striving to develop coatings that are cost-effective, easy to prepare and highly effective by integrating graphene with a wide range of suitable materials for surface protection applications. In this critical review, different types of high performing graphene-based polymer composite coatings have been described for anticorrosion application. An in-depth survey on methods of preparation, coating application techniques and their influence on the corrosion behavior of coatings is presented briefly. Newly developed strategies to enhance the protection efficiency of graphene-polymer matrix coatings are also covered concisely. The authors hope that this review will assist prospective academicians and researchers in developing novel highly efficient graphene-based anticorrosion composite coatings for industrial applications.

Flavonoids constitute a large group of polyphenolic compounds that are known to have antioxidant properties, through their free radical scavenging abilities. They possess a chromone (γ- benzopyrone) moiety, responsible for eliciting many pharmacological activities. Even though, natural flavonoids are highly potent, owing to their poor solubility, they are less used. Therefore, attempts have been made to improve their stability, solubility, efficacy and kinetics by introducing various substituents on the flavone ring. For nearly the last two decades, flavones were synthesized in our laboratory by simple, convenient and cost-effective methods, with the knowledge of both synthetic and semi-synthetic chemistry. In this direction, it was considered worthwhile to present an overview on the synthesized flavonoids. This review creates a platform for highlighting various modifications done on the flavone system along with their biological activity.

Natural compounds extracted from organisms and microorganisms are an important resource for the development of drugs and bioactive molecules. Many such compounds have made valuable contributions in diverse fields such as human health, pharmaceutics and industrial applications. Presently, however, research on investigating natural compounds from marine organisms is scarce. This is somewhat surprising considering that the marine environment makes a major contribution to Earth's ecosystems and consequently possesses a vast storehouse of diverse marine species. Interestingly, of the marine bioactive natural compounds identified to date, many are venoms, coming from Cnidarians (jellyfish, sea anemones, corals). Cnidarians are therefore particularly interesting marine species, producing important biological compounds that warrant further investigation for their development as possible therapeutic agents. From an experimental aspect, this review aims to emphasize and update the current scientific knowledge reported on selected biological activity (antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antitumoral, anticoagulant, along with several less studied effects) of Cnidarian venoms/extracts, highlighting potential aspects for ongoing research towards their utilization in human therapeutic approaches.

This study was the first institution-wide health promotion program in Taiwan to apply the five priority areas for taking action in public health highlighted in the Ottawa Charter for diabetes patients. We aimed to improve the quality of home care received by diabetic patients by training health care professionals in health promotion. This program consisted of developing personal skills, reorienting health services, strengthening community actions, creating supportive environments, and building healthy public policy. It was applied in the Yunlin Christian Hospital located in central Taiwan from August 2011 to November 2011. A health-promoting education course consisting of weight control, diabetes care, and quality management for diabetes was developed and applied to all 323 hospital staff. Then, hospital staff volunteers and diabetes patients were recruited to participate in the program. A total of 61 staff volunteers and 90 diabetes patients were involved in this study. Staff volunteers were trained to participate in communities to provide care and guidance to patients with diabetes. The World Health Organization Quality of Life(WHOQOL)-BREF-Taiwan Version questionnaires were investigated before and after implementation of this program for the patients. A health-promoting lifestyle profile questionnaire was filled by the staff. The investigation data were then analyzed by statistical methods. The diabetes patients experienced a significant increase in their satisfaction with health and health-related quality of life as well as significant improvements in health-promotion and self-management behaviors (p < 0.05). In addition, staff volunteers significantly consumes food from the five major groups than the other staff (p < 0.05). Various improvements in health-promoting behaviors were observed amongst the hospital staff and the diabetic patients. Our project could be a reference for other medical organizations to implement an institution-wide health-promotion program for diabetic patients.
