Few studies focus on the co-valorization of river dredging sediments (DS) and residual waste glass (RWG) in alkali-activated binders. This study investigates the use of DS as an aluminosilicate source by substituting a natural resource (metakaolin (MK)), while using RWG as an activator (sodium silicate source). Suitable treatments are selected to increase the potential reactivity of each residue. The DS is thermally treated at 750 °C to promote limestone and aluminosilicate clays’ activation. The RWG (amorphous, rich in silicon, and containing sodium) is used as an alkaline activator after treatment in 10 M NaOH. Structural monitoring using nuclear magnetic resonance (29NMR and 27NMR), X-ray diffraction, and leaching is conducted to achieve processing optimization. In the second stage, mortars were prepared and characterized by determining compressive strength, water absorption, mercury porosimetry and Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Results obtained show the great advantage of combining RWG and DS in an alkali-activation binder. The treated RWG offers advantages when used as sodium silicate activating solution, while the substitution of MK by calcined sediments (DS-750 °C) at 10%, 20%, and 30% leads to improvements in the properties of the matrix such as an increase in compressive strength and a refinement and reduction of the pore size within the matrix.

Waste glass is a bulk solid waste, and its utilization is of great consequence for environmental protection; the application of waste glass to magnesium phosphate cement can also play a prominent role in its recycling. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of glass powder (GP) on the mechanical and working properties of magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC). Moreover, a 40mm × 40mm × 40mm mold was used in this experiment, the workability, setting time, strength, hydration heat release, porosity, and microstructure of the specimens were evaluated. The results indicated that the addition of glass powder prolonged the setting time of MKPC, reduced the workability of the matrix, and effectively lowered the hydration heat of the MKPC. Compared to an M/P ratio (MgO/KH2PO4 mass ratio) of 1:1, the workability of the MKPC with M/P ratios of 2:1 and 3:1 was reduced by 1% and 2.1%, respectively, and the peak hydration temperatures were reduced by 0.5% and 14.6%, respectively. The compressive strength of MKPC increased with an increase in the glass powder content at the M/P ratio of 1:1, and the addition of glass powder reduced the porosity of the matrix, effectively increased the yield of struvite-K, and affected the morphology of the hydration products. With an increase in the M/P ratio, the struvite-K content decreased, many tiny pores were more prevalent on the surface of the matrix, and the bonding integrity between the MKPC was weakened, thereby reducing the compressive strength of the matrix. At less than 40 wt.% glass powder content, the performance of MKPC improved at an M/P ratio of 1:1. In general, the addition of glass powders improved the mechanical properties of MKPC and reduced the heat of hydration.

In recent years, geopolymers have received significant attention because they show environmental benefits, such as a reduction in the consumption of natural resources and a decrease in the net production of CO2. In addition, as green material, soil has low carbon dioxide production emissions compared to other building materials. In this research, soil was combined with activator alkaline to produce hardening materials as geopolymer soils. An alkaline solution with sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate and fly ash was used. The influence of clay content on the geopolymer soils’ compressive strength was investigated. The best strengths were obtained from 5% to 12% clay content. SEM photos were also taken from specimens to investigate the structure of geopolymer soils. When combined with soil and fly ash in geopolymerization, fly ash reacted to the alkali solution quickly. The relationships between many variables such as clay content, fly ash, alkaline solution, curing time, and curing temperature were investigated by using a statistical analysis program with over 100 initial parameters. These results also indicate that the use of soils in geopolymer soil should have been limited. Additionally, increasing the sodium silicate in the alkaline liquid affected the geopolymerization reaction significantly. However, the suitable Si on the alkaline solution and soil should be limited.

Geopolymer materials are characterized by their high durability and low carbon dioxide emissions, when compared with more traditional materials, like concrete made from ordinary Portland cement. These are interesting advantages and might lead to a more sustainable construction industry. The aim of this study is the characterization of the mechanical behavior of the materials obtained by the activation of metakaolin. The activator is a mixture of sodium hydroxide with sodium silicate in different proportions. The influence of the composition of activator is studied. For the analysis of the mechanical properties of the different mixtures two different types of tests were performed, bending tensile strength tests and compressive strength tests. The results show that an activator with not less than 300 g of sodium hydroxide and not exceeding 600 g of sodium silicate per 750 g of metakaolin gives the best results, for both tensile strength and compressive strength.

The mechanical properties of alkali-activated binders based on blends of tungsten mining waste mud (TMWM) and electric arc furnace slag (EAF-S) were investigated. The synthesis of alkali-activated binders was conducted at 60°C for 24 h with different TMWM/EAF-Slag ratios (90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, and 50:50 vt.%). Using sodium hydroxide (SH) and sodium silicate (SS) solutions as alkaline activators with ratio solid/liquid 4 by unit of volume, and the sodium silicate to NaOH (SS:SH) ratio of 2:1. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) were determined. The different percentages of the precursors and the alkaline activators were optimised to produce paste samples. The compressive strength of samples with 10 vt.% EAF-Slag was close to 20.7 MPa after 90 curing days. The mechanical properties were further increased up to 30 MPa by increasing the percentage of EAF-Slag to 50 vt.%. This demonstrates a new potential for re-using waste material for various constructional applications.

Spent FCC catalyst is a waste from the petrochemical industry which has excellent pozzolanic properties, containing more than 90% silica and alumina. Its similarity to metakaolin creates interesting prospects for its use in the production of alkali-activated binders. In this study, the alkali activation of this residue, spent FCC catalyst, through mixtures with alkali hydroxide and silicate solutions (both sodium and potassium) has been carried out. The alkali cation had an important role in the nature of AA-FCC pastes: some differences in the mass loss in the thermogravimetric tests and in the X-ray mineral characterization were found. No significant differences in compressive strength were observed for mortars cured for 3 days in several conditions: room temperature and 65oC. Prepared AA-FCC mortars had a compressive strength of about 65-70 MPa. Microstructural studies showed that an amorphous, dense and compact microstructure was obtained, independent of the activating solution and curing condition.

Abstract In order to develop the Fe-Cr-Ni-Mo-Mn-N corrosion resistant alloys, analyze the influence of nitrogen on the corrosion resistance of Fe-Cr-Ni-Mo-Mn alloy, adjust the N content in the alloy system, and Flux cored wires with different N content were prepared. They were surfaced on low carbon steel by MIG welding. The phase composition, microstructure and corrosion resistance of the cladding metal were analyzed to studied the effect of N content on the structure and performance of the surfacing metal. The results show that the addition of nitrogen does not change the matrix structure (which is Fe-Ni-Cr austenite), but with the increase of nitrogen content, the precipitation of nitrides ( Cr2(C,N) and BN ) is

The fully processed low-carbon electrical steels are generally fabricated through vacuum degassing to reduce the carbon level and to avoid the need for any further decarburization annealing treatment. This investigation was conducted on eighteen heats of such steels with aluminum content ranging from 0.001% to 0.011% which was believed to come from the addition of ferroalloys.The sizes of all the observed grains are less than 24 μm, and gradually decrease as the content of aluminum is increased from 0.001% to 0.007%. For steels with residual aluminum greater than 0. 007%, the average grain size becomes constant and is about 8.8 μm as shown in Fig. 1. When the aluminum is increased, the observed grains are changed from the uniformly coarse and equiaxial shape to the fine size in the region near surfaces and the elongated shape in the central region. SEM and EDAX analysis of large spherical inclusions in the matrix indicate that silicate is the majority compound when the aluminum propotion is less than 0.003%, then the content of aluminum in compound inclusion increases with that in steel.

The production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) consumes considerable amount of natural resources, energy and at the same time contribute in high emission of CO2 to the atmosphere. A new material replacing cement as binder called geopolymer is alkali-activated concrete which are made from fly ash, sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The alkaline solution mixed with fly ash producing alternative binder to OPC binder in concrete named geopolymer paste. In the process, NaOH was fully dissolved in water and cooled to room temperature. This study aims to eliminate this process by using NaOH in solid form together with fly ash before sodium silicate liquid and water poured into the mixture. The amount of NaOH solids were based on 10M concentration. The workability test is in accordance to ASTM C230. Fifty cubic mm of the geopolymer paste were prepared which consists of fly ash to alkaline solution ratio of 1: 0.5 and the curing regime of 80℃ for 24 hours with 100% humidity were implemented. From laboratory test, the workability of dry method geopolymer paste were decreased. The compressive strength of the dry mix of NaOH showed 55% and the workability has dropped to 58.4%, it showed strength reduction compared to the wet mix method.

AbstractThe improper handling of smelting slag will seriously pollute the environment, and the unfilled roof of the goaf of the mine will threaten the safety of the mine. Expansion materials have attracted more and more attention because of their excellent properties. In this paper, copper-nickel smelting slag that has some active ingredients of gelling is used instead of traditional aggregate and some part of cement in order to reduce its pollution to the environment and its costs. For safety reasons, hydrogen peroxide was chosen as the foaming agent. Sodium silicate and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) are used as additives. Our results showed that after 28 days of curing, the material has better mechanical properties and the early compressive strength of the material was enhanced by sodium silicate. The efficiency of foaming was improved by CTAB. It also proves that copper–nickel smelting slag can be used in expansion material. At the same time, the utilization rate of the copper–nickel smelting slag of this formula can reach 70%, reduce its pollution to the environment.
