The war disrupted the life of the city, destroyed the social, economic and environmental spheres in Homs. A sociological study – a questionnaire survey of city residents is conducted to understand in which direction to carry out the planning process and what activities should be taken into account when planning the territory of the city of Homs. As a result of the survey and data analysis, tables are developed that include internal and external factors and affect the spatial development of the city of Homs. Matrices for assessing internal factors (IFE) and external factors (EFE) are compiled by SWOT analysis. The planning possibilities and limitations that provide reasonable planning of the city of Homs are identified and analyzed. The results obtained indicate that the resource potential of the territory is quite rich and can eliminate weaknesses, overcome external threats and strengthen the planning system to ensure the sustainable development of Homs. An optimal strategy for the spatial development of the city is proposed. It is described by groups of internal and external factors. It takes into account socio-cultural and economic aspects, environmental aspects and the management of spatial and territorial development of territories.

The aim of the article is to evaluate the time availability of food stores for the population permanently residing in the city of Nitra (Slovakia). Parts of the city where poor accessibility has been identified can be described as “food deserts”. In the last two decades, there have been dramatic changes in the retail network in Nitra, as well as extensive housing construction and an aging change in the demographic structure. Therefore, we evaluated the years 2008 and 2019 separately. This made it possible to evaluate the changes in time availability and the number of inhabitants located in individual zones. During the years 2008–2019, the residential zones of the city of Nitra increased by 43.86%, the area of food desert increased by up to 68.78%, and the number of inhabitants endangered by the food desert increased by 1100 residents, i.e., 23.9%. In 2008, 5.51% of Nitra’s residents lived in the food deserts, in approximately twelve years this percentage increased to 7.45% of the population (2019). The proximity to the nearest grocery was in Nitra in 2008 median 504 m, while in 2019 median 623 m. Evaluating the time availability of grocery stores and identifying so-called “food deserts” can be interesting for both the city’s residents and the business community, especially for potential developers. It can also be used effectively in the spatial planning process and in the rational management of complex territorial development, as well as in local politics. Given the character of the city of Nitra, it can be assumed that the acquired knowledge can be extrapolated to other post-socialist cities of a similar size and hierarchical level.

Chapter seven synthesizes these two cases, making comparisons across the three thematic areas explored in the book—politics, discourse, and materiality. It begins by returning to the central question of why urban forestry was so appealing that it merited its own signature mayoral initiative in PlaNYC, whereas urban agriculture was overlooked. It analyzes the networks, public-private partnerships, elite ties, and bureaucratic structures that were involved in PlaNYC, revealing whose voice was heard and whose voice was ignored in the sustainability planning process. Then, bearing in mind that the politics of urban nature is both framed by storylines and influenced by non-human actants, the chapter widens this analysis from a focus on politics and social networks to a focus on actor-networks and key narratives. Finally, the chapter observes how the cases shift over time in response to both internal and external factors, even within a four year window.

A recent rapid political and economic changes in many eastern European countries demand corresponding changes in the town planning system, and especially in the development control and urban management process. For instance, at a present many historic city and town cores still remain relatively intact in their original form, but have become the target for development pressure. How should this pressure be channeled to achieve enhancement of the urban qualities of those areas (especially barracks and old factory sites), without jeopardising their competitiveness for attracting business and employment. This paper discusses the outcomes of research carried out at the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia from 1995 to 1998, on the development of appropriate methods for the appraisal and promotion of design quality in relation to economic viability in city development projects especially for an urban renewal. The elements for the assessment of urban design quality derive from the basic principles of good urban design such as identity, permeability, legibility visual appropriateness, robustness, visual and symbolic richness, amongst others. The simplified computerised model for assessing financial viability is based on building costs and market value of the investment, and shows the profitability of the development. It can be a useful tool in both assessing design viability, and for determining extra profit or ?planning gain? in the planning process negotiations such ?surplus? can be used for satisfying local needs (e.g. additional programs, design of public spaces). This method for appraisal and promotion of design quality in relation to economic viability has been examined through an assessment of the competition projects for the renewal of the Rog factory area in the city centre of Ljubljana. This case study has revealed the need for a clear strategy for future city development, with marketing guidance and policies for positive planning to achieve better vitality and viability for the city as a whole. Subsequently, the research examined successful initiatives for the promotion of urban design on a national and local level of the planning process identifying the most important issues affecting city design in the market economy, such as partnership arrangements, joint ventures and city-entrepreneurs. The paper briefly discusses: salient features of the current planning system in Slovenia and the on-going changes relating to the new approaches to town planning; the proposed method for appraisal and promotion of design quality and economic viability of urban environment; the results of the examination of this method applied to a case study - the renewal of an industrial site in the city centre of Ljubljana.

Kata Kunci : preferensi, perumahan, fasade AbstractThe southern suburbs of Surakarta City are favorites to settle based on their proximity to the center of Surakarta. With the increasingly densely populated southern suburbs of Surakarta City, developers began to glance at the neighboring areas of Sukoharjo Regency. In 2000 many built housing in Grogol and Baki Sub-district, Sukoharjo Regency and being the appeal of people who choose residential alternatives in the southern suburbs of Surakarta City.During this time the pattern of community demand for housing is only guess by the developers and the city government. Each has its own perception without a clear preference. Developers are more profit-oriented / profitable, create their own patterns, which less meet the desires of the community. Society as a consumer almost never be directly involved, even though they are prospective residents of such housing. In general, community preferences for housing can be obtained if internal and external factors underlying election considerations are known. These factors are an indicator of people's preference for housing.Through the survey that has been done, obtained the result that the majority of ordinary people will prefer the fasade with minimalist style in its preference. This is influenced by the current housing trend that always choose the minimalist style in the design of the house, also from home marketing through advertisements in mass media featuring minimalist style with the consideration of more sold. Commuting is a process that occurs frequently, usually in bigger cities and agglomerations. People living in the periphery tend to travel to work that is located in the center of agglomeration. The choice to commute can vary among the population, and that is explained by internal and external factors such as the economic and financial situation of people, labor market, etc. Even though a routine activity is a central concept of commuting, it takes place in different forms and ways and is impacted by various sociodemographic, economic, and spatial aspects. Hence, it is these social and economic changes in commuting tendencies, characters, and behaviors that this study aims to classify, analyze, and comprehend. Studying commuting is important for the city’s development. The purpose of this article is to identify the characteristics of pendulum migration based on the analysis of the results of a pilot survey conducted in the Almaty region. The methods of descriptive statistics are used for the analysis of the survey results.
