This article presents the results of a mixed empirical study with a cross-sectional design, of a descriptive type, the purpose of which is to know the conditions, processes and student perceptions regarding distance education with the use of digital media carried out in the situation of confinement due to the pandemic of COVID-19. 208 undergraduate students in several majors in high school teaching participated. A questionnaire with open-ended and multiple-choice questions was used. Based on the findings, it is noted that the digital divide is present in an important way; the learners that are “digital natives” present opportunities for improvement in the use of digital media for study and work purposes. The shift to distance mode had a predominantly adverse effect; however, in several cases, it represented an opportunity for personal and professional development. The distance work experience is mostly valued as “not great” (40.5%) and “good” (33%), and the attention given to particular situations that affected student achievement as “good” (53%) and “not great” (22%). The article’s main proposals for improvement are: a) on the part of teachers more and better communication with the learners, commitment and organization of work, as well as sensitivity to understand situations that exceed student possibilities; b) at the institutional level, training in the use of digital media for teachers and students, and unification of the type of work platform. Student commitments focus on greater enthusiasm and responsibility for work.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship among undergraduate students’ perception of faculty members’ and institutional support, undergraduate students’ appreciation of scientific skills and undergraduate students’ research endeavors.Design/methodology/approachA structural model was calculated to relate the variables. The sample included 1,882 undergraduate students from a State University located in the Southeast of Mexico. Undergraduate students came from different fields, and all of them that had taken at least 60 percent of their curricular credits.FindingsThe structural model suggests that faculty members’ and institutional support are positively related to undergraduate students’ appreciation of scientific skills and undergraduate students’ research endeavors. The findings suggest faculty members’ and institutional support are key factors to develop scientific research in undergraduate students. Therefore, the researchers argue that science programs taught in Mexican colleges and universities must endorse supportive practices among faculty members and institutions.Research limitations/implicationsThe cross-sectional design does not allow to set clear causal relationships among the explored variables. In addition, the sample included only one public university. Thus, further empirical research with research participants from different universities across the country is suggested. These improvements may enhance the strength of the proposed theoretical model.Practical implicationsCurrently, there are a plethora of studies looking at students’ attitudes toward science. Those studies have also discussed the conditions and contexts that influence research practice among undergraduate students. Nonetheless, there are no studies known by the authors that include the set of variables and relationships considered in the present study.Originality/valueDespite the plethora of studies looking at several conditions and contexts influencing undergraduate students’ attitudes toward science, no studies known by the authors have included the set of variables and relationships considered in the present study.

ABSTRACT Objective: determine the prevalence of drug use and to investigate the relationship between knowledge of consequences and drug consumption as well as the relationship between academic performance and drug consumption among university undergraduate students in Jamaica. Method: the study uses a cross sectional design. A total of 250 undergraduate students were selected through a randomized cluster sampling process. A modified survey instrument consisting of over 70 items relating to socio-demographics, knowledge of consequences, drug consumption and academic performance measures was used to test the research question and hypothesis. Results: the findings revealed low levels of drug usage as well as problematic usage, however, there was a weak negative yet statistically significant correlation between the academic performance and alcohol use (r=-.139, p=.028) which suggested that an increase in alcohol usage is associated with reduction in academic performance. The independent T test also revealed a statistically significant difference between those who used alcohol and those who did not use alcohol in the past 12 months based on academic performance. Conclusion: the findings will inform policy decisions regarding drug use and the provision of intervention services. It is recommended that this research should be extended to other universities in Jamaica.

Background: bserving plate waste is categorized as a simple way but yet still needs evaluation. When many foods are wasted, a dietitian should quickly respond and know the best way how to overcome the matters. There are three accurate ways to determine plate waste: plate waste weighing, visual estimation, and 24 hours recall. The application of each method really depends on its purposes. According to previous researches there are significant and positive correlations between the visual estimation of Comstock Scale and plate waste weighing. Visual estimation, moreover, has more advantages as it is easy to apply, cheap, and less time consuming. Considering those advantages, visual estimation needs to be socialized and considered as a new accurate method besides weighing methods. Objective: The objective of this study is to know the medical official accuracy in determining plate waste using visual estimation of 6 point Comstock Scale. Methods: An observational study was conducted using a cross-sectional design. Subjects were nurses and meal servants from hospital wards. Before the meal served to the patient the food is weighed, than the observers officer has to observed portion sized. After the patient having meal, plate waste should be estimated using Comstock Scale by the officer after that the plate waste have to be weight to know the actual weigh. The accuracy difference between two groups in determining plate waste using Comstock Scale were analysed with t-test.Results: There was significant differences of accuracy (p=0.01) between nurse group and meal servant in estimating wasted rice and wasted meat (p=0.02). The difference were not due to the job factor but the significant of various meal (p=0.0001). The work experience is a significant factor in the accuracy of plate waste (p=0.42). There was no correlation between kind of job and kind of meal (p=0.47), and kind of meal with the work experience (p=0.79).Conclusion: Visual estimation of 6 point Comstock scale could be used by both nurses and meal servant in determining plate waste.
