This paper analyzes Mohammad Hatta's idea of modern Islamic education. Mohammad Hatta is not only known as a national figure and the first Indonesian vice president, but also a faithful, active individual in the field of Islamic education. He also expresses his idea regarding Islamic education in papers. Islamic education discourse still emerges as an important discussion topic today. This paper is the result of a qualitative study with literature review. The study aimed to discover Mohammad Hatta’s idea of modern Islamic education, which still emerges as a problem in today's Indonesian Islamic education. In this case, it is necessary to provide a representative, modern Islamic education in order to deliver ideal Muslim scholars. The study found that the construct of Mohammad Hatta’s idea on modern Islamic education was to create coherence between religion and modern science, comprising sociology, history, and philosophy. Such an idea is not merely an abstract, it was applied through the establishment of Sekolah Tinggi Islam (Islamic College) in 1945 as a modern Islamic higher education.

Abstract This essay reconsiders some of Majid Daneshgar’s arguments in his Studying the Qurʾan in the Muslim Academy. The first part of the essay discusses what counts as the Muslim academy and how it is represented in this book. I examine his arguments that the Muslim academy does not do Islamic studies but rather an apologetic, descriptive, and normative study of Islam, and that the Muslim academy’s reception of Western Qurʾanic scholarship is dismissive, hostile, poor, selective, and apologetic. Its second part examines his argument that the Muslim academy does not engage in a “critical study” of the Qurʾan and Islam. Through a juxtaposition with my experience teaching at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and the development of Islamic higher education in Indonesia, I argue that Daneshgar’s thesis is an over-generalization of what he regards as the Muslim academy, obscuring its plural nature worldwide. I also question whether it is appropriate to talk about the Muslim academy in universal terms. I further argue that to analyze academic study of Islam and the Qurʾan in the Muslim world, one needs to consider the latter’s context and history and its dynamic in relation to secular epistemologies developed in the West.

Two efforts have taken place in the Muslim world in recent decades - 1977 to 1996 - to reform education. The first initiative was launched by the OIC. A parallel attempt was launched by the IIIT. The latter was in certain aspects a response to the former. While the two efforts shared a common aim – the reform of Muslim education - they adopted different approaches to realise this objective. The differences between the two approaches are due to different perceptions about the reasons for the decline of Muslim education, and how it may be overcome. The OIC initiative traced the problems in Islamic education to a dualism which separated religious studies from contemporary subjects. This approach was content with integrating “contemporary” subjects in established Islamic studies. The Islamisation movement, by contrast, insisted that contemporary subjects needed to be “Islamised”  before being introduced into the curricula of Islamic institutions of learning. In retrospect, the integration approach has proven enduring and resilient compared to the Islamisation approach. Currently, it is being implemented successfully in the Gulf region and in nations such as Malaysia.

This article analyses al-Nadwi’s views on al-sirah al-nabawiyyah through textual analysis method. As a result, this article discovers that al-Nadwi’s views of al-sirah al-nabawiyyah is based on his stand that Muslims should utilize the source of authoritative knowledge in Islam. In addition, children should be kept away from reading materials that contain elements of superstitions. The content of reading material featuring the prophets as role models should be given priority in the effort to form a good personality for children. Therefore, al-sirah al-nabawiyyah needs to be exposed to children because it is an important requirement to educate them with Islamic education. As a scholar of Islam, Ismail Raji Al-Faruqi has made great contributions especially in the field of philosophy, theology, education, and thought. Provided with a vast knowledge of Islamic tradition and Western, his ideas have impacted the academic world crossing the disciplines. Al-Faruqi also went further by transforming his ideas into a decisive practice especially when he co-founded the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) as a symbol that showcases the relevance of the methodology of Islamic education. Two of his significant writings which are the Islamization of Knowledge: General Principles and Work Plan and Al-Tawhid: Its Implications for Thought and Life have become one of the major references in the field of Islamic studies. By referring these two writings, this study argues that, Al-Faruqi’s view on politics is inevitable and he presented his political thought by establishing a substantial connection between Islam and politics. Besides that, Al-Faruqi also acknowledges the discipline of political science by arguing that such discipline is critical in assessing the problematic situation that the Muslim world is currently facing. Just like other Muslim political thinkers, Al-Faruqi also did not dismiss the important facts that the concept of khilafah is profoundly central to Islam and politics.

Sufism has contributed substantially in the development of Islam across the globe. It is also the case of Indonesia. Sufi preachers have been noticed as among the early Muslims who conveyed and disseminate Islam in the Archipelago. This trend seems to be repeated in this current Indonesian Islam. However, what is commonly unknown, Turkish organization also takes part in this current mode. Particularly, it is with the Islamic transnational organization from Turkey operating in Indonesia as the actors. This article aims at discussing the Sufi elements within three Turkish based transnational communities in Indonesian Islam and their contribution to Islamic education as part of Islamic development in the current Indonesia. This is a qualitative research to the topics within the three Turkish origin transnational Islamic organizations, namely the Jamaat Nur, the Fethullah Gülen Affiliated Movement, and the Suleymaniyah.
